Jamie Hansen Watercolor & Gold Leaf

Jamie Hansen began working in watercolors as an exchange student in Germany in 2002. Watercolor was a fast and portable medium that she used to record her experiences and travels.

When she returned, she exhibited over fifty of her watercolor sketches at her first solo show.

She graduated the following year with a Bachelor of fine arts and began working in graphic design, e-commerce, and product development in the home decor and gift industry. Her husband, a musician, educator, and conductor, inspires many of her music-themed works. She runs several websites to sell her artwork.

Jamie Hansen has sold commissioned art to buyers across the US and around the world. She lives in Anderson, SC with her husband and son.

President’s Message For 116 years, the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce has been working collectively to bring resources and talent together to achieve for our organization, our members, and community what never could have been achieved individually. It truly is a team effort.

Your Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce continues to take a leadership role in helping improve the quality of life in our community. By collaborating with public and private sectors, city and county government and Upstate coalitions, the Chamber has had a hand in bringing a hospital, a library, a regionally known fair and many other amenities to the area. Walking along our streets, shopping our businesses, or attending our churches or civic organizations, you will find a spirit of caring, friendship, and cooperation that permeates every aspect of life in Anderson.

The sincere and caring partnering attitudes of citizens, city and county officials, branches of law enforcement, the education system, the business community, and our non-profit heroes, make Anderson the ideal community environment to live, work and raise a family. Further, an atmosphere of continuous communication, building consensus and creating positive change for the benefit of all is a priceless value that works for us. Your Chamber is the largest business organization in Anderson County and we serve as the voice of Anderson’s business community. We work with our members annually to develop a legislative agenda so that we can take a strong stance on the issues that are important to our local business community, and regionally, so that we can take that message to the Capitol to speak collectively on your behalf. Together, we can be much more effective in sustaining our economic vitality for all of Anderson County and advocating for business. Your Anderson Chamber focus is to unite interests and actions toward growth and development in such a way that changes are in support of a better and more prosperous place in which to live, work and conduct business.

The Chamber gives our smaller businesses the opportunity to network with larger organizations that they might never have known otherwise. Nearly 85 percent of the Chamber’s membership base is made up of small businesses.

H. 3516 — Road Funding Legislation After many years of advocacy on this bill, the first gas tax increase since 1987 became law in 2017. The bill will raise $633 million in revenue by increasing the gas tax by two cents per year over the next six years (for a total of 12 cents). The legislation also increases the sales tax cap on vehicles, places new fees on electric and hybrid vehicles, and boosts fees on driver’s licenses. This legislation includes substantial DOT reform and tax cuts, including a reduction of the manufacturing property tax rate from 10.5% to 9%, an increase in the tuition tax credit to $1,500 for both two- and four-year schools, and a bump in the two wage-earner credit.

H. 3209 — Workforce Expansion (Expungement) H. 3209 is a bipartisan bill that will help one-time offenders who have kept a clean record to fully participate in our economy.

The bill: • Adds first offense simple possession and possession with intent to distribute drug convictions to the list of expungable criminal records.

• Allows for expungement of a crime no longer on the books if the person otherwise qualifies for expungement.

• Allows a set of minor convictions committed at the same time to be expunged jointly.

• Does not expand expungements for violent offenses, sex crimes, criminal domestic violence or DUI. • Allows individuals that were convicted prior to June 2, 2010, and were a youthful offender as the term is defined but may not have been sentenced under the Youthful Offender Act (YOA), to be eligible for the above provisions.

• Protects employers that hire workers with expungements from frivolous lawsuits related to the expungement.

S. 1043/S. 404 — Economic Development Tax Credits These two pieces of legislation were combined in the Senate and were both Upstate Chamber Coalition priorities. S. 404 will help economic developers use the lucrative job development tax credits to entice headquarters and “back office” jobs to the state.

Currently, our incentive packages are geared toward manufacturing, but we need to change the requirements so longterm lease agreements and not just major capital investments can qualify for tax credits. S. 1043 is the extension of a successful tax credit used to redevelop abandoned buildings.

H. 5341 — Tax Conformity This legislation brings state tax code in line with the Federal tax reform that passed in late 2017. For businesses, there were several major items that are better termed “non-conformity”: preserving our more generous pass-through income tax deductions, deductions for interest expenses and foreign taxes paid, among other provisions.

H. 3653 — Nuisance Lawsuits As the Upstate economy transitioned from textiles to advanced manufacturing, many industrial facilities were built miles from cities and towns. Our expanding economy means many industrial facilities now have homes as neighbors. This bill restricts frivolous litigation, minimizes legal expenses, and creates more certainty for both homeowners and businesses.

S. 105 — Automatic Stay Under current law there is no time-line for when the Administrative Law Court must hold a hearing in a suit to stop development projects. This bill limits automatic stays, thus providing a time-line for these cases to be heard by the court.

• Sets up an account at each solicitor’s office to collect private donations to cover up to half of the $250 fee required to process an expungement.

Pamela L. Christopher, IOM, CCE, CCEC is the President & CEO of the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce.

Pam oversees the day-to-day operations of an 800+ business member organization which is dedicated to strengthening the business community of Anderson County through promotion, advocacy, connection and education. Pam works with business partners and executives in the community to foster positive growth, facilitate positive movement, and strengthen the economic vitality of Anderson County and our region.

Vice President Kevin Cappell is charged with producing strong ROI (Return on Investment) that ties to the organizational goals outlined by the President & CEO through our strategic planning efforts. He is charged with developing positive working relationships with the media, community leaders, non-profit organizations, citizens’ groups, local businesses and other key stakeholders necessary for the success of the organization.

He leads and organizes all efforts related to Leadership Anderson and Junior Leadership Anderson (JLA) programs, including serving as staff contact to Leadership Anderson Board of Regents and JLA Advisory Board. Leads efforts in soliciting sponsorships for Chamber events and works with the President & CEO to provide an effective marketing program for our Chamber partners.

Director of Programs & Events Natalie Jones works with our President & CEO to maintain our member database functions for our members and for invoice tracking and processing to our database for our organization. She additionally plans and executes our Chamber events and special programs such as our Chamber Ambassadors, Anderson Rising (Young Professional Program), Chamber Annual Meeting, Small Business Luncheon, Golf Outing and State of the Economy program. Natalie has direct oversight of the Business Advancement Committee and works with them to plan out our regular events like Toast ‘n Topics speaker programs, netWorks leads programs, Electric City Women’s Brunch Series, and our Seminar/Education programming throughout the year.

Marketing & Communications Manager Britton Rodgers leads and manages our communications and marketing, as well as public relations functions through internal and external relations. She specifically leads and manages the Chamber website and all mass communication services, generates publication materials and promotions for all departments of the Chamber, develops and manages event promotion and sponsorship recognition on the Chamber website and maintains a strong collaborative relationship with the press/media to increase coverage for the Chamber. She issues press release/packets when applicable, designs advertising materials and determines placement of advertising, develops our weekly e-newsletter, and develops an annual marketing plan for specific programs of the Chamber. She leads our social media presence and all video and photography.

Britton works to ensure that our Chamber publications and programs have our unique brand.

Research & Information Coordinator Shelia Owens is key to our organization as she leads our first impression of YOUR Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce. She provides professional administrative support for the President’s boards and committees. She maintains our membership referral system, to include entering the referrals into our database and generates notifications to our members. Prepares our prospect and new member packages and coordinates and maintains the member referral system in conjunction with our events and marketing departments. Quarterly Shelia gathers and submits necessary information for the ACCRA Cost of Living Index reporting. She is a wealth of information for resources or contacts you need in Anderson County.

She also prepares Certificates of Origin and Affidavits and coordinates notary services. Shelia coordinates all of our ribbon cuttings and truly manages the front door to our community.

All Things leadership The Anderson County community works together as one to serve and improve Anderson for future generations. The Anderson Chamber offers many programs for all ages that promote leadership such as Junior Leadership Anderson and Leadership Anderson.

Junior Leadership Anderson (JLA), a program organized by the Chamber, is a program designed to encourage, equip, and empower young people for leadership roles in the future.

The participants are highly qualified students from all nine Anderson County high schools, all from different ethnic and economic backgrounds. These participants learn about our community by touring businesses and agencies, meeting with community leaders, and working on group projects. They also develop lifelong friendships with students from other high schools, and have fun designing a class t-shirt and planning a major community service event. In addition

to developing leadership skills, the program aims to teach the values of the Anderson and South Carolina communities.

While JLA prepares the younger generation to become strong leaders in Anderson County, Leadership Anderson works to strengthen existing Anderson County Leaders.

Leadership Anderson is a 10-month program which begins with a mandatory two-day opening retreat. During the retreat, each participant’s leadership style is identified along with an evaluation of leadership strengths and weaknesses. In addition, class members take part in team building activities and community role-playing simulation. Ten full-day sessions are held each subsequent month after the opening retreat. The agendas for the follow-up sessions are developed and facilitated by the Board of Regents, a committee of Leadership Anderson graduate volunteers.

All Things Anderson County Long an important part of the economic and cultural heartbeat of South Carolina, Anderson County remains a hidden gem at the Foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

From its start as part of the Pendleton District in 1790, to its growth as a settlement of its own in 1826, Anderson has been part of the Upstate’s economic engine, still a driver of the state’s economic success.

In its beginnings, Anderson County was a key stop in the transportation of goods from the coast to the rest of the country, and from the rest of the country to the coast; as well as a producer of goods and services. During the turn of the century, Anderson County was a thriving part of the textile industry, as well as a farming community providing produce to surrounding cities. Now, the area is part of the latest industrial revolution in the South centering around the aerospace and automotive industries.

In 1790, the state recognized the Pendleton District.

The district covered what is now Pickens and Anderson counties, and the town of Pendleton was its heart. From there, the community in the area grew. In 1815, the district formed the Pendleton

Farmers’ Society, an organization to benefit the area’s many farms and farmers.

By 1826, however, legislators decided to split the district in two into Anderson County and Pickens County. The county seat moved to the city of Anderson, named after the Revolutionary War hero Gen. Robert Anderson, who explored the area in the late 1700s. Legend has it that town founders walked as far as they could away from Pendleton, and when they got tired, decided where they stood would be the location of the Anderson Courthouse, and the town was named for Anderson.

Anderson County is home to Pendleton Mill, located in the town of Pendleton and now owned by La France Industries. The Mill was built in 1838 and is known as the oldest cotton mill still in operation in the state of South Carolina. The county also is home to manufacturing facilities for more than 15 international companies, including Bosch, First Quality, Michelin and Timken.

Anderson County was the first county to have hydro-electrical power, thanks to William Whitner and his plans to electrify the city of Anderson.

Using information he learned from Nicholai Tesla, in 1894 Whitner was able to power the city with electricity generated at a plant near Portman Shoals on the Rocky River. Because of that, Anderson County was also home to the first fully electric cotton gin in the United States.

In the 1900s, the area was a key component of the textile mill industry, until their demise in the 1980s.

Soon after, Anderson entered a new phase of development, attracting auto parts/manufacturers and, later, aviation manufacturers.

But it’s not all business in Anderson County. The area boasts more than 900 miles of shoreline along the banks of Lake Hartwell for recreational activities and luxury home sites. The county is also home to an extensive award winning library system, a history museum, the state’s only agricultural museum, 60-plus parks, a world-class boat ramp and an entertainment center featuring a civic center and outdoor amphitheater.

For the third time in 10 years, Anderson County has been the home to the BassMaster Classic, the Super Bowl of fishing, at Green Pond Landing, the county’s premier boat ramp. The event draws in visitors from all over the country. Located on the banks of Lake Hartwell, the landing has stateof-the-art boat ramps to fit most every size boat, plenty of area for hanging out and having a good time, and is one of the crown jewels of the county’s recreational facilities.

For nearly 200 years, Anderson County has provided area residents, and tourists from all across the globe, with a quiet yet bustling community filled with all the elements that make it a great place to work, live and play. 

County Anderson County operates under a council administrator form of government. Seven council members oversee the county’s policies, while the county administrator oversees the county operations.

In recent years, County Council has focused on economic development – providing the right climate in Anderson County for businesses to thrive in. From tax incentives to industrial parks, council has worked to ensure that Anderson County is a great place to live, work and play.

County Council also oversees road repairs, parks and recreation and services for special populations. Each year, the county spends nearly $1,500,000 on road and bridge repairs on county owned roads. From sewer work to sidewalks to roadways, county council ensures roads and bridges in the county are safe and capable of handling the traffic necessitated by industry in the county.

Recently, council approved more than $5 million to create Green Pond Landing, one of the premier boat ramps in the state, and the home to the BassMaster Classic fishing tournament three times in the past ten years, as well as many other professional fishing tournaments.

Council also approved the renovation of a children’s park, KidVenture, to bring the park up to date and accessible for all.

And council continues to make space in its budget for services for special populations – from senior citizens to Special Olympics. The council realizes that maintaining a high quality of life for the most needy of residents raises the quality of life for all residents.

An educator for more than 30 years, Floyd was elected to fill her husband’s seat following his death in 1999 and has served as a councilwoman ever since, the longest sitting member of the current council.

Council District Three – Ray Graham A lifelong resident of Anderson County, Graham attended Belton-Honea Path High School before going on to graduate from the SC Police and Fire Academy and Tri County Technical College. A long-serving law enforcement officer and fire fighter in Anderson County, Graham is the owner/ operator of Cam’s Café in Iva. Graham was elected to County Council in 2016.

Allanderson Things Anderson, South Carolina is located in the foothills region of the east coast in the southern United States on Interstate 85 between Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina. With a population of nearly 30,000, the City is the county seat of Anderson County, South Carolina and serves a regional population of more than 350,000.

The mild climate, world-class healthcare, prominent higher education and variety of cultural opportunities make Anderson an ideal choice for industry, retirees and families. Thanks to its proximity to Lake Hartwell, one of South Carolina’s largest lakes, and one of the most popular lakes in the South, Anderson is also home to plenty of outdoor and recreational activities. And the City counts its own municipal Recreation Center as a crown jewel, offering everything from indoor personal training and fitness opportunities to team sports on a variety of beautiful fields.

Known as “The Electric City,” Anderson was the first city in the United States to have a continuous supply of electric power and the first in the world to create a cotton gin operated by electricity. Anderson native William Church Whitner was the man who first conceived the idea of generating alternating current electricity using turbulent river water to send power to the City in 1896.

This history of innovation informs the business environment in Anderson today as it boasts one of the finest entrepreneurial facilities in the area, “e-Merge @ the Garage.” Housed under the City’s Economic

Development umbrella, programming at the facility includes: “Lunch & Learn” sessions in partnership with the South Carolina Small Business Development Center of Clemson University, “1 Million Cups” which is designed to connect entrepreneurs, and special events around industry specific business development opportunities. The City’s Economic Development Division also supports business development through a number of grants and planning resources for new and existing businesses.

City leaders ensure that goals for enhanced livability and quality of life top their list of priorities to position Anderson for success now and in the future. From the addition of well-landscaped spots along Main Street to the construction of two new downtown parks, the City has a fresh face to present to residents and visitors. As the greenspaces develop, the City is now more walkable, more livable and more attractive to businesses, residents and visitors. The City continues to build on its success with plans for a new downtown development initiative named “Shock this Block.” This initiative, which incorporates broad community input as guided by a design firm, will result in a creative vision for commercial and residential expansion in the City’s core.

For anyone in the area, the City continues to provide an ever expanding calendar of special events. Carolina Wren Park, located in the heart of downtown, is host to entertainment events throughout the year including the Block Party, Sounds in the Park, Shakespeare in the

Park and Movie Night. FreshTaste, a festival highlighting farm-to-fork delicacies, brings the region to Anderson each fall to sample new food, art and music produced right here in Anderson.

Honored with the South Carolina’s highest award for art, the Elizabeth O’Neil Verner Award, the City features a wide variety of permanent and rotating public art.

From the delightful collection of life-sized Carolina Wrens which grace historic spots on Main Street to the formidable bronze sculpture of William Whitner, art features prominently in the landscape. SculpTour, a rotating sculpture exhibit that brings the best in area sculpture to the city, debuts each spring as part of the Art on the Town event. Additionally, epigrams, whimsical bits of wisdom, are etched in the sidewalks for inspiration on a downtown stroll. And Church Street Heritage Plaza, downtown’s newest destination attraction, features a multifaceted art installation which tells the story of African-American entrepreneurs in

The primary mission of the Economic Development Division is to encourage, develop and enhance citywide economic development and redevelopment efforts fostering a climate to attract and retain business investment and create jobs, while maintaining a vibrant and diversified downtown core.

To serve that mission, the Economic Development staff operates a business incubator that houses weekly programs designed to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of the community. Charged to make downtown Anderson a vibrant destination, the division also coordinates and sponsors more than 175 annual events that take place in Carolina Wren Park and other surrounding venues. three wonderful notions that fit the communities around Anderson, South Carolina just right! Nestled between the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the welcoming shores of Lake Hartwell, Anderson has a rich history and a wide, welcoming personality. First of all, Anderson has such a wide variety of places to visit. Within this county of about 200,000, you’ll find working farms, museums, gorgeous golf courses, marinas, and plenty of cultural sites. For instance, you might be surprised at how many wonderful wedding settings this area has to offer. There’s a wide variety, and they all have appeal, so here’s a look at just a few. The Ashtabula Historic Home in Pendleton is a plantation house passed through several very influential South Carolina families since the 1820s. Through the years, the plantation raised herds of cattle, and grew corn and cotton crops. Ashtabula is a charming two-story clapboard home on ten open acres. It has a wide wraparound piazza on two sides that’s ideal for wedding parties up to 100 guests, with a lovely patio in back and an herb garden for a reception area. Tours are available for the public on Sundays.

For weddings of all sizes, The Oaks evokes the Old World grandeur of a European country estate. The sweeping landscape greets you with a stone and wrought iron entrance, followed by a winding drive surrounded by beds of seasonal flowers and daylilies. This idyllic spot offers several outdoor nuptial venues including Oak Terrace, The Veranda, Oak Pier and White Oak Grove.

Or, you can choose the luxury and grandeur of the 5,000-square-foot Grand Oak Hall, featuring a Portico entrance with 10-foot double doors carved of French Oak from the 18th century. There’s a private lake within the 200+ acre property, and natural beauty at every turn.

Fans of the equestrian life should consider a visit to Oxford Farm. Horse enthusiasts will love 180 acres of rolling pasture and wooded trails, just a few miles from the T. Ed Garrison Arena and Clemson University.

Those who travel here can enjoy a stay at the quaint, 4-person Guest Cottage, and The Lodge can accommodate up to eight equestrian visitors. The complex features a modern indoor barn, a duck pond, open pole barn and two riding arenas.

Learn how this family business got its start in the early 1900s, when renowned musician Dock Boggs supplemented his coal mining job by running a bootleg moonshine business on the side. Let’s just say his liquor running quickly became far more profitable, and Dock became a law-dodging entrepreneur. He wanted another generation to step into the business, and two younger Boggs brothers now run the completely modern distillery, with touches that give a nod to the past. The family tradition continues today with great tasting, high quality southern whiskey and moonshine for the masses—all completely legal now, of course. The Palmetto Distillery proudly serves up a splash of rich South Carolina heritage in every jar.

As long as you’re visiting, you might as well stay a while. There are many lodging options throughout the Anderson area, from cottages to large chain hotels. If you visit or stay, you’ve got to play! And the largest playground in all of Anderson County is beautiful Lake Hartwell. This 56,000 acre lake borders Georgia, where the Tugaloo and Seneca Rivers converge to form the Savannah River. Interstate 85 crosses the center of the lake, and public access is plentiful. Fishing is the sport of choice there, with ample stock of catfish, walleye, small-mouth and largemouth bass and striped bass.

How good is the fishing? Lake Hartwell plays host to numerous fishing organizations throughout the year to include B.A.S.S., FLW, American Bass Anglers and Fishers of Men. Green Pond Landing and Lake Hartwell have hosted the BassMaster Classic twice since 2015, and Lake Hartwell has been named a Top 100 Bass Lake in America four consecutive years. There are nine campgrounds along the shores of Hartwell, providing more than 500 campsites for waterfront enjoyment.

You’ll see all types of recreation boats, and there are five marinas on the shores for public and private use. You won’t have to look far to find a boat ramp for easy lake access. There are biking and hiking trails, and visitors may choose to explore historic artifacts on Andersonville Island or Ghost Island. Lake Hartwell is the jewel of the county, and it’s the ultimate place to play, enjoyed by thousands all year round.

The 7,700 square foot Ballroom portion of the building provides a conference center atmosphere suitable for business meetings, conferences, conventions, receptions, and banquets for groups varying in size from 100 to 1,000. It’s the largest facility of its kind in Anderson County. Meanwhile, the 28,000 square foot Arena is home to Anderson County’s largest trade shows and entertainment events – seating up to 3,200 spectators for concerts and performances and accommodating up to 200 trade show booths. Allbelton Things The Standpipe City, Belton is located just a short drive northeast of downtown Anderson, SC and less than 30 minutes southeast of Greenville, SC. Belton was built around the railroads, a feature that stands out in the town today. A junction point between the Columbia and Greenville Railroad, the Piedmont and Northern Railroad, and the Blue Ridge (Southern Railway) Railroad, Belton was incorporated in 1855, not long after the C & G railroad line was built. The city is still served by two railroads – the Greenville and Western Railway and the Pickens Railway.

The second largest town in Anderson County, Belton has retained its small-town charm and friendliness.

With a population of just over 4,400, it has a unique and thriving downtown business district centered around the historic Town Square. The square is not only the location for many of the town’s events, but is also currently undergoing a $1 million revitalization, funded through local donations, as well as state and county money. Around the square, you’ll find the Belton Center for the Arts, the Ruth Drake Museum, and across the street, you’ll find the Belton Depot.

Located on the SC National Heritage Corridor, Belton has many historic residential areas within walking distance of the square. Near downtown you’ll find

the Belton Standpipe. Located on Brown Avenue, the 155’ tall concrete reinforced water tank was built in 1909 and has a 165,000 gallon capacity. It towers over the city and has the appearance of a medieval castle.

It is one of only three remaining standpipes in South Carolina, and of the three, is the tallest. The unique water tower was also the inspiration for a long-standing festival held yearly in the fall. The Standpipe Festival brings in not only modern artists and crafts people, but the accompanying Depot Days bring in artisans whose crafts herald back to the days of old when the Standpipe was just being built, and before.

Belton is also home to world-class tennis. Throughout the year, Belton plays host to the Palmetto Tennis Championship and the SC Tennis Hall of Fame tournaments. Business and industry thrive in Belton, which is home to several oil companies, many working farms, Clinkscale’s Drugs (one of the oldest companies in the county), Jockey Lot – the largest flea market in the state, and Grits and Groceries – a nationally renowned restaurant.

Belton’s small town charm, and ease of access to big city life, make it a place where a family or business can enjoy the best of both worlds. 

...a little closer to home

All Things Honea Path They don’t call it “The Little Town with the Big Heart” for no reason. Honea Path is one of the smallest towns in South Carolina but has achieved great things and continues to be an important Anderson County municipality. Honea Path, located on the SC National Heritage Corridor, is home to just over 3,700 people, but is one of the important industrial areas of the county.

Chartered in 1855, no one is really sure how the town got its distinctive name. What is known is that one of the oldest buildings in the county was built there in the early 1800s, on land deeded to the family in 1764, and is still standing today. The Obediah Shirley Home was the home of Obediah and Jane Shirley after they married in 1824. Obediah built the house with roughhewn logs and wrought iron nails. The hinges used in the door were hand-wrought by expert blacksmiths, and the chimneys were built from rock cut from a quarry near the house. Some of the rocks are four feet long, 16-inches wide and nearly 8-inches thick.

In the early 1900s, Honea Path was awarded a Carnegie Library by the Andrew Carnegie Foundation. The library

was built with a $5,000 grant from the foundation, and later in 1958, became a part of the Anderson County Library system. Honea Path was the smallest of the 14 cities in South Carolina to receive a Carnegie Library grant. Honea Path was once the hub of the textile industry. The Honea Path Textile Mill was one of several in the Upstate and in Anderson County that helped supply America with textiles before, during and after World War II. Now the area is home to manufacturing of a different kind. Milliken, headquartered in nearby Spartanburg and has a plant in town, is a textile manufacturer, but also makes chemical, plastic, composite and protective floor coverings. The area is also home to Timken, an automotive parts manufacturer making bearings and mechanical power transmissions. Honea Path is also home to several large farms, specialty shopping and many fine restaurants, making it a wonderful little town to build a life in, just like Obediah Shirley did so many years ago. 

All Things Iva Since 1910, the town of Iva has grown by only about 400 people, but the community’s attitude and importance in the area has not changed.

Guided by a sense of shared values – guided growth; preservation of historical, cultural and natural heritage and a small town way of life – Iva is a little town with a big heart, for sure.

Nestled on the Anderson County line, near the border of Abbeville County, Iva was an unincorporated community until 1904. Originally, it was settled in the late 1800s as Cook’s Station.

Founded by Dr. Augustus Cook, Iva was a shipping station for the Seaboard Railroad. When Dr. Cook realized there was another Cook’s Station in South Carolina, he quickly changed the name of the town to Iva, after his daughter, Iva Cook Bryson.

Starting in 1905, Iva was a center of commerce with a textile mill, and many other businesses. Jackson Textile Mill, built by Thomas C. Jackson, was a source of jobs and commerce for many of the area residents throughout the 20th century. Other businesses, like Iva Manufacturing, provided good paying jobs for area residents and strengthened the local economy.

Bill Epstein, owner of Iva Manufacturing, came to the area in 1954 with $5,000 in his pocket to start the business. In its heyday, Iva Manufacturing had two plants

in Iva that handled the cutting, sewing and shipping of custom-made clothing for designers, and ultimately distributed those garments to retail outlets all across the country. Epstein lived in Iva and built his company into a multi-million dollar organization with six other plants and several other business ventures all operating out of his business headquarters in Iva. Today, Iva residents enjoy a proximity to several different lakes – including Lake Hartwell, Lake Secession, Lake Thurmond, Lake Russell and Lake Greenwood, lending to its nickname – “Gateway to the Freshwater Coast.”

Here, in the town’s own convention center, Iva hosts community events and activities to benefit residents and bring others into the area. From Depot Days in the fall, to Art Week, to Summer Nights (an annual concert series), the town of Iva comes together with residents to provide a place for natives and tourists to enjoy the community and sense of opportunity that one can only get from a small town.

Iva has restaurants to tempt the pickiest of pallets from Cam’s Cafe, Eatin Place, Griff’s Gourmet Garage, Mama Minto’s Pizzeria, Mi Fiesta Bar and Grill, and New China. 

All Things Lake Hartwell Known as part of the Freshwater Coast, Lake Hartwell is one of the most popular tourist spots in the country. With more than 900 miles of shoreline, the man-made lake is not only a much sought after place to play, but a place to live as well.

Constructed in the 1950s, Lake Hartwell is a US Corps of Engineers project that was designed to provide hydroelectric power to the area. Since its start, it has served as not only a utilitarian part of the Upstate, but also a pleasure center for recreation and relaxation.

Two recreation areas – Sadler’s Creek and River Forks – provide area residents and visitors with camping, picnicking and swimming areas, as well as boat dock areas and playground space. Operated by the Corps of Engineers and the US Parks Service the recreation areas are open to everyone and serve as popular gathering spots. Some areas in Sadler’s Creek are even used as venues for meetings, reunions and weddings.

Once every few years, the Corps of Engineers test Lake Hartwell dam. It’s a spectacular sight that garners attention from both sides of the lake. The dam gates are opened and water pours through the spillways into the lake below in a powerful display of water and engineering marvel.

Lake Hartwell is home to more than a dozen fishing tournaments – from high school to professional. With plenty of fishing habitats, the lake is stocked annually near Hartwell Dam. Marinas and put-ins throughout the county give ample opportunity for the casual fisherman to the serious angler to enjoy the thrill of the pursuit of the big one. The lake also serves as a great spot for water sports. Lovers of water skiing and tubing will find plenty of room for boats to take a run along that water. Jet skiers

and other water craft operators often take to the waves on the lake as well.

Over the past five years, Anderson County’s Green Pond Landing has served as a focal point for fishing tournaments and water sports, bringing in more than $50 million in economic impact and tourism dollars into the area. Anderson County has hosted the BassMaster Classic several times on Lake Hartwell, and continues to be one of the organization’s favorite spots for its professional fishing events.

Anderson County’s own Casey Ashley was a BassMaster Classic champion and says his local lake is not only one of his favorite fishing spots, but one of the places he honed his fishing skills as well.

Around the lake, homes from simple cottages to grand mansions give residents beautiful views and access to luxury living. Many properties feature docks on the lake and home owners can enjoy nearly year-round access to the water. With temperatures in Anderson remaining moderate throughout spring and fall, lakefront property owners can take their boats out on the water about nine months out of the year. Regardless of the weather, property along the lake provides stunning views to take in year-round.

In recent years, your Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce, lake associations and environmental groups have worked hard to ensure the water in Lake Hartwell is clean and enjoyable for all who visit it for years to come.

Allpelzer Things Bordered by the Saluda River and its counter-part West Pelzer, Pelzer sits on the edge of Anderson and Greenville County, a small town of approximately 1,500 people.

But the town says it is more defined by its sense of shared values than by its size or boundaries. Pelzer, the town says, they are defined by their wholesome lifestyle and rich history, as much as their progressive business attitude and environmental concern.

Pelzer started as a mill town with several mills for the Pelzer Manufacturing Company. Through the end of the 1800s, the town served as a site for innovation and growth, with the Upper Mills and Lower Mills lining the riverside. The company drew power from the river and used some of the first generators sold by General Electric, and was the first textile mill in the country to use incandescent lighting.

The town consisted mostly of the mill managers’ homes so that the management of the mill could control the town. The mill itself was located in the unincorporated part of the town, with the mill town – where mill workers lived in houses and shopped in stores owned and built by the company – taking up much more land than the incorporated town.

When it was built, the Upper Mill was one of the first mills to not be built adjacent to its power facility. The owners of the mills contracted with General Electric to install power lines between one of the dams on the river and the town. The company allowed GE to use the Upper Mill as a testing ground for new generators and new electric motors. It was innovation at the time, and although it initially cost the mill money for years, and was widely predicted to be doomed to fail, it did become profitable over the years.

In the 1930s, Pelzer Manufacturing was one of the locations of textile mill riots where workers stood up for their rights against mill managers, fighting for better pay and working conditions. The actions of those in Upstate South Carolina in the 1930s led to the labor laws that govern our work weeks – like 40-hour weeks, 8-hour days and prohibitions against hiring children to work.

Life in the mills wasn’t all bad though. The mills provided churches, schools and recreational activities for the mill workers and their families. Mills often had their own baseball teams and competed against one another.

Pelzer was the childhood home of Shoeless Joe Jackson, and it was on one of these mill baseball teams that he got his start in baseball. Junior Wooten, a center fielder and first baseman for the Washington Senators in the 1940s, was also a Pelzer boy.

You’ll find plenty of businesses in Pelzer – like BiLo, Bargain Foods, and Meares Auctions, one of the largest auction companies in South Carolina. Happy Cow Creamery is in Pelzer as well as provides plenty of homegrown milk, cheeses and butters to the area.

The town is also home to the Mill Town Players, a community theater that strives to bring the arts and entertainment in an atmosphere of inclusivity and creativity to the area. From homegrown comedies to musicals to Shakespeare, the acting troupe puts on a variety of plays each year for area theater goers.

Pelzer may be a small town, but its history and vibrant community make it one of Anderson County’s shining gems along the Greenville County border. 

All Things pendleton Historic Pendleton has been a center of commerce and tourism in the Upstate since before English settlers came to the area. As far back as the 1500s, the area that is now Pendleton was part of the Cherokee and Creek Indian nations and an area where Native Americans traveled and trapped animals for food and their skins.

When English settlers came to the area, it was near here that the Indians would trade animal pelts and food for guns and other goods.

In the 1780s the Pendleton District was established by the state of South Carolina, and encompassed what is now Pendleton, Anderson and Pickens counties, with the city of Pendleton serving as the hub of the district.

By the early 1800s, Pendleton was a vacation spot for wealthy landowners along the coast, who built mansions in the Pendleton District to get away from the mosquitoes and malaria during the summer months in the low country. Eventually however, the district was separated into counties and the county seat moved to Anderson Courthouse, now Anderson.

The town and its immediate surroundings are known as the Pendleton Historic District. The District as a whole was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Included in the district’s historic area are several historic buildings including the Farmers’ Hall and Hunter’s Store. Nearby are two antebellum mansions, Woodburn and Ashtabula, plantation homes that serve as reminders of a different era.

But Pendleton has continued to thrive as a hub of commerce for the area. The city is home to Tri-County Technical College, and to several large companies.

The area serves as a bedroom community for nearby Clemson University, as well.

Each year, Pendleton plays host to thousands during Spring Jubilee, an arts festival that brings in juried participants to show off their wares. The city also hosts several other events in the square throughout the year, including farmers’ markets and holiday walks.

Pendleton’s history continues to bring in residents and tourists, drawn to its quiet, small town feel. 

Allpiedmont Things Like many other communities in the Upstate, Piedmont was once a part of the textile industry in South Carolina.

Piedmont had a mill community bustling and thriving with activity. Only two smokestacks remain of the Piedmont Manufacturing Company, the mill that brought work to so many in the area.

Now, however, the little town just 10 miles south of Greenville is on the cusp of rejuvenation thanks to the Saluda River.

Each year, the Saluda River Rally gives kayaking enthusiasts the opportunity to hit the water in an all-day kayaking extravaganza, ending in Dolly Cooper Park, equipped with the only handicapped-accessible kayak ramp in Anderson County. While the park is located in Powdersville, the river travels through the middle of Piedmont, past the Saluda River Grill, where a festival atmosphere welcomes the kayakers from all over the East Coast to the area.

Put on by the Anderson County Parks and Recreation Department, the Saluda River Rally has brought in tourists to the area for more than 5 years and continues to

grow each year. The event gives kayakers an opportunity to explore an area of the Upstate they may not have previously known about.

Recently, developers have been looking to Piedmont to revitalize the iron footbridge that spans the river, hoping that the bridge will become a magnet to the area, like the Swamp Rabbit Trail has been to other areas of the Upstate. The bridge stands over a waterfall and is the focal point of the area, linking Anderson County on one side, to Greenville County on the other.

Other developers hope to revitalize the area by buying up and renovating historic buildings in the area and opening them up to business tenants. With the help of Anderson County and Greenville County, as well as private donors, Piedmont is poised to become another jewel in Anderson County’s crown, this one a tourist draw that provides business owners the ability to get in on the ground floor of an up-and-coming area. 

All Things powdersville Nestled between Greenville and Anderson counties, Powdersville is one of the fastest growing areas in the Upstate.

Located at the northern tip of Anderson County, and in the southwestern side of Greenville County, Powdersville is home to more than 7,000 people in its 549 square mile area. Once known mainly as a farming community, Powdersville now is home to a multitude of housing subdivisions, as well as its own elementary, middle and high schools.

Surrounded by Pickens County and the Saluda River, Powdersville is an unincorporated area, meaning it doesn’t have a town council or town government. But the area thrives and continues to grow – ever expanding along its borders.

Powdersville started as Powders, a testament to the area’s production and trade of gunpowder. In 1859, the first powder mill was established in the area by John Bowen. The area was a storage site for gunpowder for the Civil War. The name Powders stuck, and later became Powdersville after the name of one of the first general stores in the area – Powdersville General Store.

During the Civil War, Powdersville was where a Union soldier was taken after the only skirmish of the war in Anderson County. He was nursed back to health by an Anderson girl, whom he later married.

Because of its location, Powdersville continues to bring together two different ways of life. Located on the border of Greenville and Anderson counties, the area makes for a great place to live. With an easy commute to Greenville, Anderson and Easley, it is a perfect area to get away from work, but not be too far away. But with its rolling farmland and rural setting, Powdersville continues to be a small town with an open and welcoming attitude.

As Powdersville grows, its businesses and organizations for the community grow too.

Recently, several new restaurants have opened up in the area, bringing much needed fine and casual dining to the area. Restaurant owners hope to draw from both Anderson and Greenville residents, but local residents find the restaurants – like Shane’s Rib Shack and 4126 – to be just the thing they need to get away from the kitchen.

In business, Powdersville is home to a number of small businesses. It is one of the locations where Duke’s mayonnaise is produced. Anyone who cooks in the South knows Duke’s mayonnaise is a southern tradition that makes food just taste better.

By combining the small hometown atmosphere with a burgeoning business community, Powdersville continues to be poised to be one of the best places to live, work and play in Anderson County, and the Upstate. 

All starr Things Throughout Starr, some of its most ardent workers are volunteers.

The small town of 187 consists mostly of a walking track and a municipal courthouse. But the passion of its volunteers in its athletic association and volunteer fire fighters embody the love Starr residents feel for their town.

Starr Volunteer Fire Department is one of 28 in the county. At one time Anderson County had the largest volunteer fire fighting organization in the US east of the Mississippi River. Each year the Starr Volunteer Firefighter’s organization hosts a fundraiser selling food to help buy supplies for the fire department, a move that prevents residents from shouldering the burden.

Likewise, the Starr Athletic Association holds its annual Fall Festival to raise money for its sports programs.

Unlike other municipalities, Starr Athletic Association volunteers work to ensure that all kids can play sports without having to pay for either sign-up fees or equipment. From basketball, to baseball, to football and beyond, the members of the Starr Athletic Association volunteer their time and energy to make sure the children in the area have access to whatever sport in which they want to participate.

Owens Corning, as well as the textile industry in the area, provided many of the jobs in the area, but primarily, the town has been home to agriculture and farmland.

Originally named Twiggs, Starr was once a bustling hub along the Western Carolina Railway. When the town was officially chartered in 1888, its name was changed to Starr to honor one of the popular railway officials, Captain W. W. Starr.

Starr is home to the Gray House, a local restaurant, and Jackie’s Starr Mart and Cafe, as well as other businesses.

An agricultural center, Starr and Iva together are one of the biggest beef producing areas in the state. Not surprisingly, Crescent High School has one of the biggest Future Farmers of America groups in the state as well.

Here, Evergreen Plantation, one of the earliest plantations in the area, and Milky Way Farm, a dairy farm that is one of only nine in the state licensed to sell raw milk, make their home.

On Lake Hartwell, Big Water Marina provides boat slips, as well as boat rentals for those wanting to get out to a day on the lake. Jackie’s Starr Mart and Campbell’s Café serve as gathering places for the community on SC 81 and continue to support area activities through their sponsorships and advertising efforts. 

All Things townville In the northwest corner of Anderson County, Townville is an unincorporated community along the banks of Lake Hartwell. Rife with lakefront property, the small town has nearly as long of a history as Pendleton, having opened its post office in 1836. Townville is another example of quiet rural life close to the convenience of bigger towns like Anderson, and Greenville, that enjoys the benefits of luxurious lake living as well as the benefits of being so near a college.

Townville was started by Samuel Brown and was first known as Brownville. A Presbyterian church was organized there by 1803. Townville was then and remains an agricultural community, although the lure of lake life has loomed large on its horizon. The Browns remained community leaders throughout the 19th century, and were part of the community’s work to better the town’s transportation system.

Toward the middle of the century, villagers petitioned the state legislature to provide better roads and ferrys to the area in order to improve business. Access to the villages of Pendleton, Andersonville, Townville, and Anderson courthouse was crucial for local farmers to get cotton to market, to get corn and wheat to the mills, and to get to stores for needed supplies. Brown and others petitioned the state to build a toll bridge across the Seneca River on the road from Townville to Anderson courthouse.

The petitioners complained the road was frequently traveled, but also frequently covered by water when the river rose. These proposed roads and ferries insured that Townville would remain an important center of commerce for surrounding farmers, and a stop on the way to and from Pendleton.

The legislature recognized that roads needed improving so that outlying towns could reach the markets, courts and the railroad. They acknowledged the most important of these included the road from Anderson courthouse to Pickens courthouse (Pickensville) via Pendleton, to Townville via Shallow Ford, to the village of Andersonville, and to Craytonville.

In this century, Townville continues to thrive thanks in large part to its location along SC 24. The town is home to Townville Elementary School and serves as a through-point for trucks traveling from Oconee to Anderson counties. Much of the area’s late 19th century architecture is still standing, and the area has been recommended for placement on the National Register of Historic Places.

Now the area is also feeling the impact of tourism along Lake Hartwell. With luxury lakeside homes popping up everywhere, the area is feeling a surge in growth that can be attributed to the beauty of the lake, and the quaint homey feel of the community. 

All Things west pelzer Next to Pelzer, West Pelzer is a town of less than 1,000 residents.

Formerly separated by the Southern Railroad tracks, and less than a quarter mile, West Pelzer and Pelzer share the same zip code and telephone prefix, but stand on their own as important parts of the Anderson County community.

Originally, West Pelzer was known as Frankville.

Cherokee Indians lived in the area starting in the 1500s, then part of the Cherokee’s Middle Towns district. In the 1800s, white settlers came to the area, chartering the town and naming it after its surveyor, John Franks, in 1913. In 1918, a new petition was filed to change the name from Frankville to West Pelzer.

West Pelzer has seen rejuvenation lately, adding a street festivals, vintage markets and unique events. A town that focuses on building relationships and community, West Pelzer is centrally located between Greenville, Anderson and Easley, and is an integral part of the Anderson County community.

In 1940, West Pelzer was designated as an official bird sanctuary and in 2016, was able to “spread its wings” with a grant from the Hughes Investments Elevate Upstate. The grant helped the town to create a walking

tour of the town pointing out some of the historic parts of West Pelzer like the West Pelzer Municipal Center, O’Dell Community Center, and Chapman Park, the site of the town’s annual Fall Festival and Christmas Parades.

From When Nature Calls – a hunting and fishing store, owned and operated by local hunters – to Net’s Flowers, a locally owned florist – to Gray Mortuary, the family owned and operated funeral home in business in West Pelzer since 1934, West Pelzer is host to a wide variety of places to work and shop.

West Pelzer also has a variety of restaurants and retail shops to meet the needs of everyone who visits the area. Mill Town Place offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, while Westy’s Antiques and Vintage Heirlooms provide treasures around every corner. All Things williamston Located along US Route 29, Williamston, South Carolina is one of the fastest growing communities in one of the fastest growing counties in the country.

In the mid-1800s, a farmer, West Allen Williams, fell asleep on his property and dreamed of a water spring that would bring health to all who drank from it. Upon awakening, he found that spring, Mineral Spring, and it was around that the town of Williamston was founded.

The town developed a park around the spring, Mineral Spring Park, and it became a destination for people across the country for its healing properties. Great hotels lined the streets of Williamston, and a Chautauqua filled with educational events was held at the park annually.

After the Civil War, US Route 29 connected the south with New York and was the quickest, most direct route from New York City to Atlanta. Mineral Spring Park was a tourist destination along the route then as well.

Mineral Springs Park is still the center of Williamston, named after West Allen Williams and his discovery.

But now the town is home to a great educational school system, Anderson School District 1. For the past decade, the district has stayed in the top 10 performing school districts in the state, according to District report cards reported by the South Carolina Board of Education.

Williamston is home to many businesses and industries as well. Located near the border between Greenville and Anderson, the community is home to a wide variety of workers, from blue collar workers at manufacturing centers, to white collar executives, to educators at some of the nearby colleges and universities.

Williamston is truly in the center of it all, located just 30 minutes from both Greenville and Anderson, making

it the perfect home for those looking for a livable small town community within easy reach of bigger cities.

New to the city are an indoor entertainment venue, the Armory Fitness center- offering fitness opportunities 24 hours a day, seven days a week- and a weekly Farmer’s Market in Mineral Springs Park on Thursdays from June through September.

But the city’s established businesses, like some of the cities great restaurants, and Phoenix Fabrics which holds its monthly fabric sale on the first weekend of every month, continue to provide Williamston residents with access to everything they need.

In recent years, the town has paid particular attention to its Main Street, providing not only incentives for businesses to locate there, but for residents to come there as well. The street, and Mineral Springs Park are home to events throughout the year – from summer concert series to seasonal festivals. The city hosts an annual MLK breakfast, a July Freedom Celebration (with some of the best fireworks in the county!), the annual Spring Water Festival on the fourth Saturday in August, a Homestead Festival and VW Campout and a Christmas light display in the Park during the holiday season.

This year, Williamston applied to have Mineral Springs Park listed on the National Historic Registry, as the second oldest public park in the country. Established in 1842, the park preceded the town by a decade. Even after the town was established, it continued to make history. The site of the current Municipal Building was once the home to Landers’ Women’s College which eventually became Lander University. For business, pleasure and Southern living, Williamston invites you to join it in continuing to make history. 

All Things Business

Since the late 1700s, Anderson County has been a thriving center of industry and economic development.

And then, as now, the community continues to meet the needs of those who live in and travel through the area.

In the early days of America, Anderson was part of the Cherokee nation, one of several Townes between what is now the Tennessee valley and the coast. It was here that the Native Americans trapped animals for their skins, that they would later trade with settlers for things like guns and tobacco.

When the Native Americans sided with the British during the Revolutionary War, it ended their trade with the settlers and eventually resulted in their handing the land over to revolutionaries.

United States to have electricity, and giving rise to the city of Anderson’s nickname, “The Electric City.”

During the 20th century, Anderson was home to a thriving textile industry, and was one of several towns along the most direct route, US 29, from New York City to Atlanta.

Now the county is home to not only industry in the form of automotive and aeronautic manufacturing, but also is home to shopping, dining and entertainment.

The county boasts more than 230 manufacturing companies, including 49 international companies.

These companies produce everything from industrial machinery, plastics, publishing and textiles.

“The Electric City”

In 1791, the area was incorporated by the state into the Pendleton District and stretched into what is now Pickens, Oconee and Anderson Counties. Traders from other states used trails running through the area for droving, and bought and sold their livestock at taverns and in towns throughout the county, Like Varennes Tavern and along the Generals’ Road, known as Clemson Boulevard.

By the 1820s, the district had been renamed Anderson Courthouse and the county seat was moved to the City of Anderson. Commerce thrived along the streets and in the towns of Anderson County, with locations like Andersonville, along the banks of the Seneca River, serving as trading posts, as well as serving as industrial centers, with factories for munitions, cotton, and other wares, as well as serving as a tourist destination.

In 1895, William C. Whitner developed the first hydro-electric power plant on the Rocky River, making Anderson the first city in the Southeastern

Along the streets of Anderson county’s many municipalities, you’ll find antique and specialty stores, and everything from housewares to hardware.

Some of Anderson County’s restaurants have garnered national fame – either from their story, their owner/ chefs or their wine lists. You’ll find everything from traditional Southern cooking, to high-end gourmet fare, to pub fare and international cuisine.

Home to Anderson University and close to Clemson University and Southern Wesleyan University, Anderson County is also home to several hotels where visitors stay while attending arts or sports events and visiting the area. Large chain hotels and motels, bed and breakfasts and boutique inns provide visitors with plenty of options for accommodations. 

Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport meets the Upstate’s travel, business needs. Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) serves as a gateway to the Upstate and it connects the region to hundreds of cities across the globe.

as well as throughout the United States. The airport served as the entry point for more than 550 horses arriving from overseas to compete in the 2018 World Equestrian Games held in Mill Spring, N.C. It was the largest commercial airlift of horses in the world.

The airport, which has served the Upstate since 1962, has a $2.9 billion impact on the Upstate’s economy while serving business and leisure travelers as well as handling more than 100 million pounds of cargo a year.

New $36 million air cargo facilities, including a 110,000 sq. ft. warehouse and a 13-acre ramp will open on the north end of GSP’s campus in 2019. The ramp will be able to accommodate three Boeing 747-800 aircraft simultaneously.

History

In 2017, the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District began Cerulean Aviation to provide fixed-base operator services, including air cargo support. GSP’s cargo numbers increased nearly 39 percent within the first year and the airport moved from No. 84 to No. 72 on the Federal Aviation Administration’s list of largest cargo airports.

Greenville’s Charlie Daniel and Spartanburg’s Roger Milliken began assembling a team in 1957 to plan and design a regional airport for the Upstate. Business leaders, elected officials and farmers are among those that made GSP possible. Together, they transformed land that was once a peach orchard to be the site of an airport runway and an economic catalyst.

Passenger Experience Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier, Southwest and United are the commercial passenger airlines currently operating from the airport. GSP serves more than 2.3 million passengers a year and supports more than 100 daily operations, including nonstop service to nearly 20 destinations.

GSP offers free shuttle service from its two economy parking lots (a third is scheduled for 2020). Reserved and valet parking services are also offered.

The airport has a variety of dining options and its concessions program received the Airport Revenue News’ award for best concessions program design in 2018.

GSP is the fifth airport in the United States to open an Escape Lounge, a common use lounge developed by the United Kingdom-based Manchester Airport Group. The 2,500 sq. ft. lounge has a menu designed by the Upstate’s Rick Erwin Dining Group and passengers can enjoy cocktails and high-speed internet in a relaxing setting with breathtaking views of the GSP airfield.

Anderson-based Palmetto Distillery has a retail location at the airport that sells its moonshine and whiskey. Products from the distillery, including pickles and bloody Mary mix, can be found at the airport’s Hudson stores with other novelty items made in South Carolina.

GSP’s airside garden is an iconic feature that makes the airport one of the few in the country providing an outdoor area for passengers post security. It was a vision of Roger Milliken, GSP’s long-time commission chair, after visiting Frankfurt, Germany. It has flowers, trees, fountains and statues capturing children at play.

Passengers passing through GSP will notice plenty of art, including statues, sculptures, mixed media pieces, mosaic tiles and oil on canvas, including “Sunset Sail on Lake Keowee” by an Oconee County artist. Each of these commissioned art pieces should remind visitors of the Upstate’s waterways, landscape, textile industry heritage and its future, which includes roles in technology and mobility.

Fixed-based operator services GSP’s fixed-base operator services include Cerulean General Aviation, which includes a private terminal for charter flights and hangar space for corporate and personal aircraft.

Customers can find competitive fuel pricing, concierge services, complimentary refreshments, gourmet catering, customs and immigration clearance, VIP services and rental cars onsite.

Economic Impact GSP’s involvement in commercial development, the GSP International Logistics Park, as well as air cargo and passenger services, has significantly increased its economic impact in the Upstate in recent years. The airport’s $2.9 billion economic impact is more than eight times greater than it was 10 years ago.

As one of the fastest growing areas of the country, Anderson County is home to rapidly expanding healthcare systems to keep up with the area’s changing needs.

At AnMed Health, three different hospitals: AnMed Health Medical Center, AnMed Health Women’s and Children’s Hospital and AnMed Health Rehabilitation Hospital, provide services for Anderson County residents young and old.

AnMed Health System started more than 100 years ago when Jennie Gilmer, an Anderson woman, promised God that if she survived the birth of her second son, she would see that a hospital was built in Anderson. Medicus offers extensive array of services ranging from basic eye examinations for glasses, contact lenses, and laser vision correction; to laser and surgical treatment of diseases including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration diabetes, and facial plastic surgery. All surgery is performed at the AnMed Health Medicus Surgery Center adjacent to our office on an outpatient basis. As a group, the Ophthalmologist annually perform more than 1,800 cataract surgeries at this facility.

Investing in employee health – what you may not know about the importance of occupational medicine

What companies may not know is the myriad benefits of an occupational medicine partner to keep your company and your employees healthy by providing services – from supporting employee wellness to detecting workplace hazards – aimed at preventing and mitigating the health and safety risks that could have unfortunate consequences.

Studies show that investing in your employees’ physical and mental health pays dividends to your business bottom line. Consider these [facts/stats]: • Millions of workers in the U.S. develop health problems that temporarily or permanently prevent them from re-entering the workforce • Approximately 10 percent of these workers experience prolonged or permanent withdrawal from the workforce • It costs employers 33 percent of a worker’s annual salary, and 42 days on average, to hire a replacement if that worker leaves or is on extended leave.

• In addition to this direct cost, there are also the indirect costs of lost skills and institutional knowledge, and decreased morale and productivity of the team Employees are your organization’s greatest asset, and keeping them healthy is important. But it is often easy to overlook potential hazards and health risks. For example, common workplace

injuries include neck and back pain, or hand and wrist pain, associated with sitting and working at a desk for too long. Debris, or even outdated heating and cooling equipment, can contribute to poor air quality resulting in respiratory or sinus issues. And shoe choices contribute to heightened fall risk and foot injuries.

In supporting employee health and safety, the key is to start simple. Small changes can make a big difference. Here are a few ways you can support the well-being of your employees: • Support sick leave and provide timely seasonal vaccinations. Allowing employees to recover fully before returning to work, and leading by example, can reduce overall sick leave by maintaining the health of the rest of the team.

• Encourage healthy behaviors. Offer healthy eating choices in shared cafeterias or break rooms. Urge regular breaks to walk, and support wellness initiatives like employee competitions. More active is always better for general health.

• Share best practices for using equipment. This applies to manufacturing and machinery, but also office spaces. Provide ergonomic office design, and educate employees on proper posture, keyboard positioning and distance from screens.

All Things education

Recognizing that education is an important part in developing quality employees for a diverse workforce, Anderson County’s educational systems – from preschool to higher education – work together to ensure that residents can get the education they desire for themselves and their children, while focusing on providing highly skilled workers for area businesses.

Anderson County’s school systems are varied, but all of the area school districts consistently rank in the top school systems in the state. Whether you’re looking for public school, a parochial school, or a custom educational platform, Anderson County has whatever educational solutions best suit you and your child.

Anderson County’s public schools are overseen by the Anderson County Board of Education. The county board approves each of the individual district’s budgets and manages several services for all of the districts – like mental health counseling for students and food service for some of the districts.

Several religious schools, including St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Oakwood Christian Academy and others, provide education from a Christian perspective.

Alternatively, the Montessori School of Anderson provides residents with a facility for the Montessori method of teaching. The Anderson County Home School Association also provides assistance and support to those who wish to educate their children at home.

The county is divided into five school districts – Anderson County School District 1 located in Williamston; Anderson County School District 2 which covers Belton and Honea Path; Anderson County School District 3 which covers Starr and Iva in the southern part of the county; Anderson County School District 4 located in and around Pendleton, and Anderson County School District 5 which covers downtown Anderson and surrounding areas.

Each school district has its own school board that focuses on each district’s own schools, but the district’s work in conjunction with each other to ensure that students throughout the county get similar educations, as well as have similar calendars. Anderson County School Districts One and Two work together to run a joint Career and Technical Campus, Anderson Career and Technology Center (ACTC). A recent one-cent tax

initiative has helped to fund a similar joint venture between Anderson County School Districts Three, Four and Five, located on Pearman Dairy Road. The Anderson Institute of Technology is convenient to those districts.

Anderson University, located in downtown Anderson, provides higher education with a Christian perspective.

Affiliated with the Southern Baptist Conference, Anderson University offers a four-year undergraduate program in everything from art history, biology, coding and nursing.

Additionally, the graduate school offers programs from the ministry to a command college for law enforcement professionals wanting to further their career.

Southern Wesleyan University offers similar bachelor’s degree programs, but is affiliated with the Wesleyan Church.

Tri-County Technical College offers associate degree programs for those interested in everything from mechatronics to veterinary technology.

Transfer programs help students get their liberal arts requirements at the technical college while preparing them to transfer to four-year programs like nearby Clemson University.

Anderson Districts I & II Career & Technology Center (ACTC) serves 9th-12th grade students from Palmetto, Powdersville, Wren and Belton-Honea Path high schools. Serving almost 2,000 students with 21 high tech programs, we are not your ordinary public high school.

Our industry-driven programs are integrating literacy, numeracy and science everyday into college and career courses leading to over 90 industry certifications. The face of career and technical education has changed dramatically over the last twenty years. Tri-County Technical College, a public two-year community and technical college serving Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties, enrolls more than 9,000 students annually and offers more than 70 major fields of study, including computer technology, industrial electronics, mechatronics, nursing, and university transfer programs.

Founded in 1962 on land donated by Clemson University, Tri-County Technical College has grown from a technical education center with one building in Pendleton to a comprehensive community college with four campuses in its three-county service area.

Tuition is the lowest in the area and nearly eighty percent of students receive some form of free financial aid, including Pell Grants, Lottery Tuition Assistance, LIFE scholarships, and Foundation scholarships.

From acting companies and museums to shopping and water sports, Anderson County has it all when it comes to entertainment and things to do.

Throughout Anderson County you’ll find plenty of things to do. Whether you’re a fan of the arts, sports or just a quiet place for a picnic, Anderson has something for you.

Anderson County is home to several museums recognizing everything from the county’s history to the area’s rich agricultural heritage and more. The county library system provides not only books and electronic media, but also access to genealogical records and historical newspapers dating back to the 1700s.

Anderson is also the location of Anderson University, home to the South Carolina School of the Arts.
