Cities

Trinidad is a very small island with a population a little over 1.3 million people living on the island. Even with that, there is over 15 cities in the country and no single city holds a population over 100,000 people. Within the last few years there has been infrastructure design in each city in the country.

Upon entree into every city, there is an arc that stands at the front and back to mark the entrance and exit of the cities. The arc stands over 15 feet tall with the name of the city sitting over the arc. Each cities arc has slight differences, but for the most part, the basic design is the same from city to city.


Housing in Trinidad never lacks variety in design and style. You can see homes on this island that are as diverse in color as the country is diverse in people. There is always a grand difference from one home to the neighbors next door.


Housing

Granted there are newer housing developments that show similirities in design but it is not as common. At the end of the year, as mean celebrate the holidays, some families take this time to perform maintainance on their homes.



Local Cuisine The diversity of meal choice in Trinidad is as diverse as the many ethnical backgrounds of its people. Many of its people found their way to Trinindad via some form of migration, and have set generations into motion. The diverse group of people now native to the country has had an impact on the plethera of food choices in this country. One of the most infamous dishes native to Trinidad is doubles. A dish that can be eaten at any time of day but taste best in the later hours of the day. It is made with two breaded outer layers filled with chana peas. It can also be served with toppings that sweaten or spice up the dish.



Beaches Trinidad is a dream to beach lovers. The island has over 7 different beaches, and many rivers. Whether looking for blue or green water, or grand tides for a surf, there is a beach there for you to do it all. The most famous beach in Trinidad is Maracus beach. Maracus beach is where locals and tourist alike visit to experience low tides and beautiful waves. Although the water is beautiful, this beach is popular for the delicacy that is sold at the shops that surround the beach.

Bake and Shark shops around the beaches provide some of the freshiest flavor, that is if you dont mind a long wait in line. The beautiful view and tasty treats are some reasons many people head to the beach, but a must have experience is to attend a party that is hosted on the beach. It is nothing like staring at the waves and listening to your favorite songs blast through speakers.


Pitch Lake The asphalt lake located in Trinindad, known to the people as Pitch Lake is one of three natural asphalt lakes in the world. Asphalt is a natural resource, used to produce oil. The facility uses the asphalt and extracts natural oil from the original misture of oil, water, and clay.

The pitch lake was said to have been discovered in the 1800s by Sir Walter Raleigh during an expedition to the Carribean. He saw the material and thought it may be useful for his boat, so he took barrels of the natural resource with him.


Bird Sanctuary Trinidad has two mangrove wetlands on the island. One of which, the Caroni wetland, doubles as a bird sanctuary. It is the home of many wildlife, including the national bird, the Scarlet Ibis. Caroni is located in the west of the country and is home to over 1200 avian species. Boat tours of the facility are offered. Not only will you see birds on this tour, you will experience a close experience with alligators, snakes and many more of wildlife.


Tobago

Tobago is the sister island to Trinidad. The country is a 30 minute plane ride or 3 hour boat ride away from its larger sister island. Tobago is known for its beautiful beaches, one of which is the Nylon Poole. The Nylan Poole is a body of water in the middle of the ocean. In order to get there you must take a boat.

The boats that travels to the Nylan Poole have glass bottoms that provide visiblity to the ocean floor. Some boats stop along the way to allow patrient to swim with the fishes. The Nylon pool is 3 to 4 feet in depth and is said to be a fountain of youth.
