RT Sherman thought he had the best ride of his life, literally and figuratively, with legendary Swaps in 1955. Yet 59 years later, Sherman will likely send out the favorite in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on May 3, California Chrome, whose fourth consecutive, dominating victory came in the $1 million Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, the same stakes Swaps captured before adding the Kentucky Derby. Regardless of what happens with California Chrome in the Run for the Roses, the California-bred has already provided a great bookend for Sherman’s fascinating career.. The son of a barber, Sherman was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Southern California after his family moved there when he was seven. His dad’s clients urged Sherman to become a jockey. “I was always small in stature,” Sherman said. “At 16, I was 95 pounds.” On the way to getting his jockey’s license, he was a groom and exercise rider for trainer Mesh Tenney, whose clients included the Rex Ellsworth Stable, which bred and owned Swaps
