NTIL three years ago, the name Figge had little resonance in German racing circles. Wolfgang Figge was a small trainer in Munich, his elder son Michael an even smaller one. In his younger days, Michael had been a successful amateur jockey, winning 31 races; he was once leading amateur in Germany and also FEGENTRI vice-champion; he won races in Sweden, Austria and Holland and was also runner-up in Epsom’s big race for amateurs at the August meeting.
