With four and three victories each, they are eighth and tenth in their respective Grand Slam champions’ rankings.
Having achieved his goal of returning to the top of the world rankings last November (for the ninth time in his career), Rory Daniel McIlroy’s main objective this season is to remove the thorn of not having yet won the Masters at Augusta. He has conquered each of the other three majors: the US Open in 2011, the British Open in 2014 and the PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014. The closest he has come to a Masters green jacket was last year, when he finished second to Scottie Scheffler, who won his first major by a three-strokes margin.
McIlroy is, together with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, one of only three players to have won four majors before the age of 25.

Born in the Northern Irish village of Holywood on 4 May 1989, McIlroy is unquestionably one of the greatest golfing stars of this century. Swedish women’s professional golf has always shone at a high level. Annika Sorenstam is undoubtedly its greatest star and benchmark, but she is joined by other outstanding compatriots, including Anna Maria Nordqvist. With three majors under her belt, the 35-year-old, born on 10 June 1987 in Eskilstuna, west of Stockholm, is the only non-American woman to have won majors in three different decades (2000, 2010 and 2020).

At the end of her freshman year at Arizona State University, in 2007, she was named rookie of the year, Pac-10 player of the year and National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) rookie of the year. In 2007 and 2008 she earned NGCA First-Team All-American and Academic AllAmerican honours. She tied for fifth place at the 2008 NCAA Championship (won by her college teammate Azahara Muñoz).
In December 2008, she tied for 25th in the LPGA Tour’s final qualifying tournament and turned professional immediately after the final round. In January 2009 she won the final of the Ladies European Tour (LET) qualifying school.
In only her fifth appearance on the LPGA Tour, Nordqvist won her first professional tournament, and it was a major no less, the LPGA Championship in June 2009. In November she won the LPGA Tour Championship, her second victory of the season. She was named LET rookie of the year and finished second to Jiyai Shin in the LPGA rookie of the year award.
At the 2013 Solheim Cup, Nordqvist won her match with Caroline Hedwall with a hole-in-one on the 17th hole, beating Morgan Pressel and Jessica Korda 2 & 1 during the Saturday morning session. It was the first hole-in-one in the history of the biennial tournament between Europe and the United States. In late May 2015, she won her fifth official tournament on the LPGA Tour.

It was determined that the play-off would be decided in favour of the player with the best aggregate score over the last three holes at Cordevalle Golf Club (California), and in the event of a tie it would be resolved in sudden death by playing the last hole again. Both players (Nordqvist and Lang) carded pars on the first two holes, but it was soon determined that Nordqvist had moved the sand slightly before her approach shot from the fairway bunker on the 17th – a two-stroke penalty. A rules official informed the players of the penalty halfway through the final hole, a par-5, after Nordqvist’s third shot but before Lang hit her own approach. ■
