Thank You, Direct Support Professionals!

A Letter from ANCOR’s Leadership

To all those who advocate on behalf of our direct support workforce: The last few years have brought about many challenges, but also opportunitiesand innovation. Daily, direct support professionals (DSPs)lead the way in improvingthe lives of people with disabilities, implementingpersoncentered supports, and continuing to push toward our goal of full and completeinclusion.

There's plentyof work to do, and the Senate unanimouslypassingtheRecognizingthe Role of Direct Support ProfessionalsAct to establish a standard occupational classificationis a sign of hopeand progress. As these policygears turn to quantifyand qualify the work of DSPs, it's beingdone in an exceptionalmanner, and to an exceptional degree, by so many DSPsaround this country and others. This year, our judgingpanel had the impossibletask of selectingthe 55 professionals profiled here from among nearly 500 outstanding nominations.

From promotingsafe and consensualintimate relationships, to facilitatingconnectionswith long-lost family, to supporting maximum independence, and so much more, this year’s class of honorees has done it all.

We hope you’ll take the time to read through the stories chronicled here. As you do, keep in mind that these represent just a small samplingof the drive, dedication and devotion delivered by direct support professionals, day in and day out.

On behalf of the ANCOR community: THANK YOU, DSPs!

Sincerely,

Doug Simmonsen embodiesthe ideals of person-centeredness, inclusion, and belonging every day; but his dedicationto making these ideals a reality was in full force when he took the call to action to becomea host home provider for the most at-risk LGBTQ+ people his organizationserved.

In his role as a Direct Support Professional, Doug was able to radicallytransform the life of a 65-year-old transgender male living with debilitatinganxietyinto an emotionally thriving, contributingmember of his communitywhilefostering a safe haven for other LGBTQ+ individualsreceiving services.

Recently, at the age of 65, this individual disclosed that he was a transgendermale, which complicated hiscare for some direct support staff, but not for Doug. Thisperson experienced such severe and debilitating anxietythat it prevented him from creating meaningfulrelationshipsas well as any opportunitiesto have an impact on his community.

Doug
Dungarvin / Reno, NV

Doug went above and beyond his role as a host home provider by introducing thisindividual to LGBTQ+ safe spaces, transgender support groups, and even connectinghimto a plethora of people who became a support network he had previouslynever had in his life.

Now thisperson is thriving in his communityofchoiceand is activelyworking to create even more LGBTQ+ safe spaces for other transgender individuals. Thisindividualno longerfeels trapped in his bedroomand can engage in a communitythat both acceptshimas well as fosters his continued growth and personal development.

Too often, the peoplewe support are reduced to just their disability. Thisignores the need for individualsto express their true identitiesand denies their inherent right to personhood. Doug tookit upon himself to introducethistransgender individualto support groupsin order to both nurture and foster his new identity, which led to increasinglypositivehealth outcomes. Doug proved to the state of Nevada that introducing individualsin services to local communitiesthat support theiridentitycan lead to extraordinaryand transformativehealth outcomeswhiledeveloping their natural support networks.

In addition to his role as a DSP, Doug is a pillar in the LGBTQ+ communityin Reno, Nevada. Recently, Doug assisted in establishing Reno’sfirst-ever Pride parade and maintainscritical relationshipswithin thelocal community, relationshipsthat benefit the individualshe supports. Doug is also a key member of Our Center, Reno’sonly LGBTQ+ support group that addresses advocacy, and education, and provideslegal/medical services to his community’s LGBTQ+ population.
