The Club is a hidden gem, situated at 36 Pall Mall in the heart of Mayfair with views over St James’s Square and offers members a luxury home from home that’s familiar, comfortable and welcoming. The Rag has an impressive 180 year history, founded in 1837, originally as a private club for military officers and with the Duke of Wellington as one of its Members it now welcomes professional men and women from all backgrounds who are looking to enjoy all the benefits that club membership can provide. The Club has much to offer with an impressive roster of facilities, including 5-star dining, all en-suite accommodation, a range of bars selling competitively priced food and drink along with private hire rooms available for everything from business meetings, conferences and corporate events to weddings and civil ceremonies. Short Club History In 1837, the young Queen Victoria acceded to the throne on the 20th June. Euston Station, the first London rail terminus, opened a month later, and the Army and Navy Club was founded on the 28th August. The founder and first President was Lieutenant General Sir Edward Barnes, formerly Commander in Chief in India, who had, as Adjutant General, earlier played a vital role at the Battle of Waterloo, by storming and recovering Quatre Bras at the head of the 92nd Regiment. The Club was formed to meet the needs of the great many army officers who could not join the Senior Club or Junior United Services Club, which were already full. Officers of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines were included at the behest of the Duke of Wellington, Commander-in-Chief, who refused to become Patron, or a Member, unless officers of the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines were also offered membership. The Club opened at No.1 King Street, with a joining fee of fifteen guineas, and an annual subscription of five guineas. The Club Library was started in 1845, and at this time the rules included ‘no gambling and no smoking’. Shortly after opening, the Club acquired its famous nickname. One Captain William Higginson ‘Billy’ Duff, a somewhat colourful character with a brief military career (four different regiments in three years!) was offended by the Spartan nature of fare offered to him on returning from a spree. He described the club as a ‘Rag and Famish affair’ which was intended as a great insult, since the Rag and Famish was a squalid gaming house in a turning off Cranbourne Alley ‘For broken down gamblers who played for coppers – the lowest and worst place of last resort’. The Members were amused rather than insulted by this, and formed a Rag and Famish dining club within the Club. Then the name was adopted as the Club’s nickname, eventually being shortened to ‘The Rag’. Billy Duff enthusiastically co-operated, and even designed special Rag and Famish Club buttons, which can be seen to this day. Captain Duff’s behaviour did not improve, and he was later sentenced to six months in jail, together with his friend, Lord Waldegrave, for assaulting a constable. In 1838, a distinguished sailor succeeded a distinguished soldier as President. Admiral Sir Philip Durham had commanded HMS Defiance at the Battle of Trafalgar, the twelfth ship in Collingwood’s column, which had boarded and captured the French Aigle. Between 1846 and 1847, the Club purchased five houses extending from St. James’s Square to 39 Pall Mall. In 1850, a magnificent clubhouse was built on the site of these houses, which was to serve the Members until 1959, when it was demolished and replaced by the present building. The Army and Navy Club is deeply entwined with British history. Eleven Members, including Captain Nolan, were killed at the Charge of the Light Brigade, and it was in the Club, on the 6th May 1858, that the term ‘Entente Cordiale’ was coined, when Major General Sir Fenwick Williams, at a Dinner to mark the Anglo-French alliance in the Crimea, toasted Colonel Guerin of the 5th Ligne, with ‘L’Entente Cordiale’.

Your Room The Rag - Army & Navy Club has 75 en-suite bedrooms, providing members and their guests relaxing, comfortable and convenient accommodation in central London. All the rooms are well equipped and appointed with quality linens, soft furnishing with many having Hypnos mattresses as standard along with television, radio and Wi-Fi access plus tea/coffee making facilities. Room tariffs also include continental breakfast with the option to order a morning newspaper of your choice. The Club also has its own secure underground car park which can accommodate up to 30 cars. Instructions for Air Conditioning & Heating Controls These are as shown below: • Windows should be closed when the air conditioning is in use. • You should contact Reception in case of difficulty. Windows Windows can be opened by turning the handle to the right from its horizontal position, then pushing outwards from the bottom. For your safety, the opening of these windows is restricted. The rooms at the back of the Club have traditional windows. Fire Alarm System & Fire Procedure A fire alarm test is carried out at 10.30 a.m. every Tuesday. Should you hear the alarm at any other time, please make your way out of the Club via the front doors and across the street to the corner of the St James’s Square Gardens.

Telephone Instructions • A red flashing light on the telephone indicates new voicemail. • To retrieve your voicemail messages, simply dial 1212 and listen to instructions. • For an outside line, lift the handset and dial 9. If a line is not free, please try later. After obtaining an outside line, simply dial the required area code and number. Our Services Departure from the Club You are required to vacate your room by 11.00 hours. Hair Dryers/Toiletries/Bathrobes • All bedrooms are supplied with hair dryers. • Shaving sets and toothbrushes are available from Reception at £1 per item. • Bathrobes can also be provided at a cost of £5 per stay. Ironing The Ironing Room is on the 5th floor. Shoe Cleaning There is a shoe-polishing machine in the Gentleman’s Cloakroom on the ground floor. Safety Deposit Boxes Safety Deposit Boxes are available from Reception. Laundry/Dry Cleaning Services • A same-day laundry service is available Monday to Friday. • Items for cleaning should be presented to the Housekeeper’s office on the 6th floor by 0830. • Items will be returned to your room by 1900. Linen Guests who stay in the Club for more than one night, towels and sheets will be changed every third day. If you would like your towels to be changed more frequently, please indicate this by leaving them in the bath. Newspapers Daily newspapers can be ordered from Reception or available to read in the public rooms. Pillows/blankets The Club uses feather or microfibre/feather-filled pillows on the beds. Additional blankets are kept in the wardrobe. Settlement of Accounts Before leaving the Club, your account must be settled in full at Reception. For Members and their guests there is an Express Check-Out system. Please ask at Reception for the relevant form in advance of departure. Valuables The Club does not accept responsibility for articles of value left in bedrooms. All Premier Rooms are equipped with safes.

Our Facilities Secure Underground Parking There is secure parking available in the Club’s underground car park; please book via Reception. There is 2 hours free parking if booked for lunch in the Dining Room. Rates are reviewed annually, and Members are advised to check them with the garage attendant. IT Helpdesk & Support Nader Tehrani, the Club’s IT Manager now runs a Technology Genius Bar and IT Helpdesk in the Business Centre for members. These drop-in sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1000 to 1330 to help with IT matters. The Club’s entire wine list is also available to purchase online so if there’s a certain bottle you’ve enjoyed in the past or have just tasted in one of the bars or restaurants, then these can be ordered in a couple of clicks. Using the Club Rules for the Public Rooms The Club has a relaxed dress code with minimal regulations but in order to ensure an enjoyable atmosphere in the public rooms and to reduce clutter we request that coats, bags, luggage and shopping are placed in bedrooms or in the designated storage areas below: • Gender specific cloakrooms on the ground floor. • Secure baggage storage area on the ground floor next to lifts. • Coat rack outside the Ribbon Bar on the 3rd floor. • Please leave suitcases, bags & shopping in the cloakroom. • Handbags can be taken in all rooms. • Business bags & briefcases may be taken into the Business Centre. Screens, Tablets & Mobile Devices Please limited use of phones, i-pads, tablets and laptops in the public rooms. Where possible please take calls outside of the Club or in the following locations: • Bedrooms • Business Centre • Cloakrooms • Ribbon Bar Terrace Free wifi access Wi-Fi is available throughout the Clubhouse. Members are entitled to free WiFi access 24/7, and should request their access code from Reception. Business Meetings Meetings should be held in the Club’s Business Centre on the 1st Floor or in one of the bookable meeting rooms. The Business Centre is complete with hot-desks, break-out spaces and at-desk catering options and is perfect for ad-hoc meetings, private working or quiet space away from the office. The Ribbon Bar can also be used for low-key meetings. Members and their guests are kindly asked to respect the needs of others by keeping noise and disruption to a minimum. The Smoking Room is designed to be a place for small social gatherings, a place to catch up with the news or quiet time. It is designed to have the atmosphere of a country house drawing room, meetings should be held elsewhere.

Club Layout & Access Lifts There are two passenger lifts on the ground floor, one of which goes as far as the fifth floor and the other to the sixth floor. A service lift runs from the garage to the sixth floor, and is large enough easily to accommodate a wheel-chair. All lifts have a recorded voice feature and Braille push-buttons. Accessibility The Club has two folding wheelchairs, and a ramp is available for use at the main entrance to the Club. The service lift runs from the garage level to the 6th floor, and is fully accessible for wheelchair users. The Service lift and both passenger lifts are fully DDA compliant. • Room 301 (twin) is fully DDA compliant, and has a wetroom bathroom. • Room 401 (twin) is fully DDA compliant, with DDA compliant conventional bathroom • For the hard of hearing, there is an induction loop in place at Reception, the Porters’ Lodge, the Pall Mall Room and the Dining Room.
