2022 ANNUAL REPORT JULY 2021 – JUNE 2022 HOPE.
TRIUMPH. ANNIVERSARY TH
JOY.

Dear Friends,

With the pandemic somewhat in our rearview mirror, 2022 welcomed a return to “normal,” as well as several exciting developments that enhanced our facilities and furthered our impact in the lives of families and children who have vision impairments. In fact, 2022 marked the celebration of 40 years that Anchor Center for Blind Children has been a nationally recognized leader in teaching and providing comprehensive care for young children with serious visual impairments. Be on the lookout for our 40th Anniversary Impact Report which pays tribute to our journey over the past 4 decades, and celebrates the special community of supporters who have made all of our accomplishments possible.

We are excited to share that we officially began seeing patients in our new eye clinic, located in the lower level of the building. The new clinic provides ample space for Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments to observe and assist with appointments, for family members to comfortably attend appointments in the exam rooms, and for Dr. Robert King and Dr. Anna Steele to see more patients. Families are welcomed to the clinic by a whimsical ocean-themed sensory wall, designed by Maria Cole, original architect of the Anchor Center building. The wall consists of many different elements, textures, and lights, which children have enjoyed exploring while they wait for their appointments.

Our CVI (Cerebral Vision Impairment) Team was busy, attending and presenting at conferences nationally and internationally about our NAVEG work, screening premature babies for brain-based vision impairments in the neonatal intensive care unit at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children. Since the conclusion of that study, our team has been accepted to conduct the same study at Children’s Hospital of Colorado. We are thrilled to continue our work to refer more children for early intervention services, and to establish this collaboration with CHCO.

We continue all our other programs with back-to-normal attendance (and a surge in the demand for home visits.) Our team remains committed, passionate, knowledgeable and collaborative across programs. Many thanks, as always, for the ways you support our life-changing work!

With Gratitude,

HOW DO WE MEASURE A YEAR?

Over the 2021-22 school year, Anchor Center served 131 children, 258 primary caregivers, and 21 siblings through center-based, home visitation, and enhanced virtual services.

PROGRAMS INFANTS

(0 - 18 months)

Teachers and therapists help caregivers gain understanding of their child’s unique vision challenges and strengths; strategies to care for their infant’s special needs; and tools to nurture their child’s early development.

Ryder was diagnosed with Ocular Albinism, a rare genetic disorder affecting the amount of pigment in his retinas, and nystagmus, which affects his ability to control his eye muscles. We left the doctor’s office feeling overwhelmed and with many more questions than answers. Luckily, we were referred to Anchor Center for Blind Children’s Infant Program.

The program includes twice-weekly classes with vision teachers and physical, speech/language, occupational, and music therapists designed to build early learning foundations. With the help of Anchor Center, he is currently on track developmentally, and it now feels like we have a team of people in Ryder’s corner. But, most importantly, we have discovered nothing is holding him back from living a full and beautiful life.

TODDLERS (18 months - 3 years)

Teachers and caregivers work with toddlers on their visual, auditory, and motor development, orientation and mobility, including cane travel and pre-literacy, communication, and social skills.

Ryllah attends our Toddler Program at Anchor Center. When she first came to Anchor, it was tricky for her to make eye contact with new adults and peers. Touching new objects and textures were tricky as well. After attending our program for a few months, Ryllah is making eye contact and smiling at her peers and teachers. She is reaching out and touching her peers, and different textures, and needs less wait time to use her hands and eyes.

- Melinda Carter, Anchor Center TSVI

Anchor Center has helped Ryllah broaden her horizons and has introduced her to things she has never experienced before. Ryllah absolutely loves music and becomes animated and vocal when she hears the instruments. Other favorites are story time and the light center. The entire staff is amazing and so patient and knowledgeable.

PRESCHOOLERS

(3-5 years)

Anchor Center celebrated its 2nd year piloting Inclusive Preschool, welcoming both sighted and visually impaired peers into the program. Studies show that attending school in an inclusive environment not only leads to improved social skills and caring peer relationships between students, but also fosters a greater respect for diversity. Our visually impaired Preschoolers receive individualized early childhood special education via the nationally accredited Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC). Preschool advances instruction in orientation and mobility, literacy and braille, prosocial behavior and daily living skills, and the use of assistive technology. Preschoolers with and without visual impairment also enjoy preacademic education and specialized music and horticultural therapies, as well as community field trips and events.

Owen

HOME VISITS (0-3 years)

Owen came to Anchor as a tiny baby with Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) as a result of his rare seizure condition. He participated in the Infant Program, received vision therapy, and now he attends preschool! Owen often slept all the way through the Infant Program despite everyone’s best efforts. But it is clear that he loves school at Anchor Center as he now stays awake for the entire school day. Owen loves light toys of all kinds, enjoys music and stories, and he especially loves playing in a little room. Owen has grown so much in his visual attentiveness over the last three years and we are excited to see what he’ll do next.

Provided in the child’s home, our Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments (TSVIs) offer one-to-one vision consultation and training to parents/caregivers and children in their home environments. Our TSVIs assist parents in adapting their homes and practicing techniques to promote and nurture infant and early childhood development, exploration and learning.

Nakoa participates in early intervention in the Home Visit Program with his mom and dad, Peta and Victor. Nakoa was first referred at 6 months old when he was prescribed to use eye patching to improve the alignment of his eyes. After visiting the eye doctor and visits with specialists, they learned that Nakoa should have eye muscle surgery to correct. Nakoa and his mom work hard to have fun and meet so many milestones. This year, Nakoa is learning how to walk!

WHO WE SERVE

When we started at Anchor Center, Aidan was 8 months old, nonverbal, immobile, and didn’t know our faces. He could only last 30 minutes on a good day during program before he would fall asleep or get frustrated. But the staff at Anchor was knowledgable, patient, kind, and continued to provide us with the resources we needed to help Aidan progress. They supported us during our physical time at Anchor, but they also provided us with supplies to take home so that Aidan could continue learning outside of the classroom.

Now at almost 5 years old, Aidan walks mostly independent with his white cane, talks about everything, and has had tremendous visual improvement. He actively looks for things that he wants, is learning to climb ladders, ride a balance bike, learn his letters and numbers, run, and use his hands for coloring and drawing. We have also discovered his love of everything music. A true testament of his amazing progress was when his neurosurgeon cried seeing him walking and talking, and told us she never thought he would do either.

The only accurate way to describe Anchor Center is as a family, and they are truly a part of our family. Anchor embraced our family where we were and walked us through all of our questions, concerns, and appointments. The staff not only had the programming expertise, they also assisted with Aidan’s assessments, helped with eye appointments at the clinic on site, provided at home vision therapy, developed parent sessions to learn about resources, and coordinated community days to explore activities in the surrounding area. The most helpful for our family has been the collaboration with Aidan’s other care providers through Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings, joint therapy sessions, and meeting with Aidan’s other teachers to answer their questions and teach them about Aidan’s visual needs. They also helped us get the equipment we needed during the pandemic and taught us how to adapt the resources we already had at home to maximize Aidan’s opportunities to learn and enjoy his world. The staff at Anchor Center are our lifeline, cheerleaders, educators, and family. No one at Anchor has ever said he can’t or he won’t; it has always been “let’s try”.

- Elizabeth, Aidan’s Mom

CVI RESEARCH: NAVEG STUDY UPDATE

In July 2018, we launched a new research initiative seeking to improve early screening, assessment, and intervention services for young children with the brain-based visual impairment known as Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI). CVI is a condition in which the eyes are healthy, but the brain is unable to interpret visual information. Considered the leading cause of pediatric visual impairment in the developed world and originating from a wide spectrum of cognitive impairments and neurological damage, CVI is seen as one of the most concerning public health issues of our time.

Anchor Center’s team of vision experts are working to address this critical issue. Led by Anchor’s Director of Research, Dr. Cathy Smyth, and in collaboration with Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, we conducted a groundbreaking study to determine whether the Neonatal Assessment Visual European Grid (NAVEG) Screening Instrument can indicate the presence of CVI in premature newborns who are especially at risk for this brain based impairment. Our research team is the first in the U.S. to be approved to provide NAVEG screenings in hospitals for babies under 9 months - a process we consider crucial to ensuring children with CVI receive treatment as early as possible. We are excited to expand this research study in partnership with Children’s Hospital Colorado in 2023.

Anchor Center has received immense recognition and interest regarding the NAVEG screening from across the nation. To date, we have trained over 100 pediatric interventionists and healthcare professionals on the application and use of NAVEG, including 3 hospitals, 4 state early intervention systems, and 4 private early intervention providers. In fact, following the training provided by Anchor’s researchers, the Early Intervention for State of Utah has implemented the NAVEG screening for every infant that comes out of the NICU referred to early intervention. Since beginning in August 2021, they have completed 263 NAVEG screenings, with a 25% referral rate for early intervention for suspected visual impairment.

To date, Anchor’s researchers have completed nearly 100 NAVEG screenings in the NICU, with 32% referred for early intervention and over 95% have demonstrated improved CVI Range Scores (which measures changes in functional vision) after receiving our services!

Karen Borg, Director at Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind, shared: “My goal is that every child who is discharged from the NICU will be screened by us if they are discharged before they are a year old.” Anchor Center is thrilled to have helped Utah meet this goal and we are inspired to expand this as a model practice and improved standard of care for states across the country.

Virginia Deal Williams Volunteer Award Recipient:

Danielle Grant

Named after a long time Anchor supporter, the Virginia Deal Williams Volunteer Award is presented each year to an outstanding volunteer who embodies Virginia’s enthusiasm, dedication and continued willingness to go above and beyond.

It is our honor to recognize Danielle Grant, meteorologist and reporter at 9NEWS, as this year’s Virginia Deal Williams Volunteer Award Recipient.

Beginning in 2015, Danielle first strapped on her dance shoes to compete and raise dollars for our beloved Dancing with the Anchors event, which pairs Arthur Murray dance professionals with local Denver news anchors in a spirited ballroom dance competition. The team who raises the most money wins the coveted mirror ball trophy. Since that time, Danielle has been the reigning mirror ball champion, putting in countless practice hours and fundraising on behalf of Anchor Center. In fact, she has singularly raised over $50,000 from over 400 donors for our children and programs in the three years she has participated in the event. Not only does she use her platform to raise dollars for Anchor, but she has also been a key media partner in raising awareness for Anchor Center’s work via special interest stories highlighting our remarkable children. Thanks to Danielle, Anchor’s visibility has been elevated in the community, bringing new awareness, support and friendships to our mission.

Additionally, Danielle has volunteered her time and talents for several years as the emcee of our largest fundraising event, Sunset in the City. It’s no easy job commanding a room and inspiring generous philanthropy amongst a crowd of over 450 guests! Last year, she oversaw the evening’s program, which raised over $430,000!

Danielle has a HUGE heart for the children and families of Anchor Center, and her commitment to our community in advancing our work is unparalleled. As Danielle so often says to us, “These kids deserve the world!”. Thank you for all you do, Danielle!

IN MEMORIUM

This year, we honored the lives of former students and donors with a beautiful memorial stone that was placed in the northeast area of our outdoor grounds. The stone bears a quote which reads: “Our hearts hold dear the memories of the children whose presence graced us too briefly and the believers whose generosity led to the miracles of Anchor Center for Blind Children”.

We placed a relocated bench in the same area, so that visitors and staff can rest and remember people who have been lost and loved by the Anchor community. Special thanks to supporters Alice & Marc Applebaum, Wendy Clayton, Karen Roberts and Family, and Anchor Center’s Board of Directors who provided leadership and guidance overseeing this special project.

Navigators

Charting Our Future

As we age, I think it is natural to begin to look for more ways to give back to society and the communities we live in. Listing Anchor Center as one of our beneficiaries on our investment accounts was a quick and easy way to assure that we include Anchor in our final wishes without having to update our will.

Having served on Anchor Center’s Board of Directors, I have seen the exciting things the organization can invest in when we have been bequeathed funds. Our growth in advancing Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) research is a great example of that. It is my also hope that my own children and fellow Delta Gammas will follow my lead and consider Anchor Center in their legacy planning as well.

Navigators ensure Anchor Center’s future and the future of Colorado’s young blind children. By including Anchor Center in their estate plan or by making a planned gift, Navigators leave a lasting legacy and transform the lives of future generations touched by visual impairment.

NEW EYE CLINIC & ASSESSMENT CENTER OPENS

Anchor Center for Blind Children recently opened our brand new state-of-the-art Eye Clinic and Assessment Center located in the lower level of our current building. Renovation of the space began in the spring of 2021 with the goal of expanding our existing services by adding two eye exam rooms, a specialized assessment room, as well as a spacious reception area.

The new space is designed with our students in mind. The entrance to the clinic displays a sensory wall featuring an oceanic theme that provides tactile learners with endless opportunities to explore while they wait. Each piece is carefully chosen to make the most of the space and to allow visually impaired children a sensory experience with curved designs mimicking the sea, a jellyfish lava lamp, and a tactile wall featuring seashells, fish, and tile for little fingers to explore.

Dr. Robert King, Pediatric Ophthalmologist at Children’s Eye Physicians, is honored as the visionary of the project and has volunteered countless hours performing eye exams over many years at Anchor Center. Dr. King, along with Dr. Anna Steele, MD., and the technicians of Children’s Eye Physicians, have provided on-site professional care allowing family members, Anchor Center teachers and therapists to attend, hear results directly, and ask questions related to each child’s learning style and educational plan. Doctors, technicians and staff work together and develop best practices for children who are blind or visually impaired.
