We are currently working on our new leisure strategy which aims to get more people, more active, more often. With six fantastic leisure facilities available, there really is something for everyone, so whether it’s the gym, a swim or a class, we have something to get you back into the swing of things. We have lots of good news to share with you in this issue; one highlight as Mayor already, has been travelling to Dublin for the All Ireland Best Kept Awards, which saw Randalstown reach the finals and Antrim Town receive the award for Best Urban Centre. This is superb news and shows once again how beautiful our Borough really is. I hope you all enjoy the rest of your summer and I look forward to a busy year for our Borough. As the summer holidays come to a close, I’m sure children will soon be preparing for school. We especially think of all the P7 leavers, including my own daughter Grace, who will be transferring to post primary education. I realise that this brings a big change, along with new challenges, therefore we wish all pupils well as they settle into their new schools. There are also plenty of opportunities and activities across the Borough to keep the kids entertained after school, see pages 6 and 7 for more information.

MAYOR’S CHARITIES 2017-18

NEW MAYOR AND DEPUTY MAYOR

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Paul Hamill has chosen the following three charities to support during his year in office.

At the Annual General Meeting in June, the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor were elected as well as the Chairpersons and Vice Chairpersons for each of the committees.

TinyLife is the premature and sick baby charity for Northern Ireland. They provide a range of family support services including a hospital to home volunteer programme, family support groups, breast pump loan service, baby massage, baby sensory, Tinygym (physio for babies) and TinyStart (child development programme). The Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice is a local charity providing specialist palliative care for babies and children, young people and their families living with lifelimiting and life-threatening illnesses. As the only Children’s Hospice in Northern Ireland, it cares for over 300 families annually, both at the Children’s Hospice in Newtownabbey and in their homes. Its aim is to provide quality of life for patients and to support families in every way possible. The Sandes charity is a Christian outreach to provide friendship and welfare facilities to members of HM Forces. The charity which was founded in 1869, runs centres on military bases for personnel and their families, creating a ‘home from home’ atmosphere and providing a listening ear and appropriate support. To help raise vital funds and awareness for the above charities, a range of fundraising activities and events will be organised.

TRY AN EARLIER EXERCISE REGIME Antrim Forum is now open from 6.15am, Monday to Friday and from 9am on Sundays so there’s no excuse not to get that early morning workout in before work or the school run. CLEANLINESS OF THE BOROUGH

If you are a family of four, you could be saving as much as £60 each month by using your food waste instead of throwing it in the bin. Here's a quick and easy recipe to use up left over vegetables or cooked meats.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our 'Cleanliness of the Borough' survey in March. It was great to get the feedback and good to hear your ideas. Keeping our Borough clean is everyone’s responsibility and we want to work with our community to encourage this. Our successes in the Best Kept Awards are testimony to that.

QUICK PIZZA

So what did you tell us and what are we doing about it?

• 1 baguette • 1 garlic clove, halved • 2 tbsp olive oil • 4 tbsp pizza topping: this can be any leftover cooked meat or vegetables you have in your fridge • 200g of any cheese, sliced or grated • Pinch of oregano

Preheat oven to 230°C Chop the baguette into three and then split in half. Rub a halved garlic clove over the split baguette. Drizzle with olive oil. Put onto a baking tray in a hot oven for 5 minutes Spread pizza topping thinly over the hot bread Top with cheese Bake for a further 5 minutes. Sprinkle with dried oregano and enjoy!

86% of you like using the brown bins so we are providing them to the whole of the Borough by the end of the summer, including the rural areas in Antrim. In the Antrim area you would like to have a glass collection service and so we are looking at this. 80% of Newtownabbey residents like the weekly kerbie box or triplestack collection. We are replacing the remaining kerbie boxes with the more popular and easier to move triplestacks, by December 2018. Our free bulky collection service is well used and 87% of you are pleased with this service. It can be arranged online at antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/bulkywaste. We are also looking at how we can be more specific about a collection date and advise you about it. Our recycling centres are very well used and you would like longer opening hours so we are looking at this. The cleanliness of our streets is still a concern with 44% of you satisfied with the service, so we are working to improve this. We are getting tougher on offenders and have provided an additional 30 litter bins in the last 12 months. We are also targeting dog fouling hot spots with additional street cleaning. Congratulations to Virginia Keane, winner of two theatre tickets. Virginia was entered into a prize draw for responding to the 'Cleanliness of the Borough' survey.

BROWN BIN RECYCLING WHAT’S YOUR EXCUSE?

In 2016/17, the Council managed over 78,276 tonnes of household waste. This is equivalent to the weight of 14,232 elephants! Of this waste, 21,399 tonnes were composted via brown bins and recycling centres. We want to thank our residents who use their brown bin and encourage residents who do not recycle their food and garden waste to do so! Here are a few reasons why you should use your brown bin...

IT COSTS LESS TO RECYCLE FOOD WASTE! The cost of recycling food waste is much less than the cost of sending it to landfill. Recycling waste is also better for the environment.

EVERY LITTLE COUNTS! No amount of food waste is too small. If you drink tea, even your tea bags can be put into your brown bin.

FOOD CADDIES ARE FREE!

IT’S NOT MESSY!

All residents in the Borough should have a brown food caddy. You can get your caddy free of charge by contacting Waste Management.

Free caddy liners are available from Mossley Mill, Antrim Civic Centre or any of our leisure centres. You can also request caddy liners from Waste Management or alternatively, tie your red tag onto your bin and we will leave you a pack of bin liners next time we empty your bin.

IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE SMELLY! The caddy liners are free of charge so you can empty your brown food caddy once a day or more if need be, stopping the waste from going smelly.

WE’RE ON A MISSION Attention all hoarders! Do you have an old sofa, table or even a bike that is never used sitting in your garage gathering dust? If so, then why not recycle it at one of our five fantastic recycling facilities? We have recently joined together with East Belfast Mission to upcycle and reuse bulky items. After you drop off your item at our recycling centre, East Belfast Mission refurbishes or reinvests them and makes them available for sale in their charity shops, Restore.

FOODBANKS IN OUR BOROUGH One in five children is living in poverty in our Borough.* People can find themselves in this situation through a number of ways. It can be linked to low wage employment or jobs with zero hours’ contracts and no job security. It may be an older person living on a basic pension or young people who find themselves homeless. A sudden crisis such as redundancy or an unexpected bill can force people to choose between paying rent or buying food. Below is some information on how you can get help or help others who are in need...

I am not mobile; how can I get help from a foodbank?

If you are unable to travel to a foodbank, there are volunteers who will deliver the food. In addition, if you are unable to carry the shopping bags home from the foodbank, they can be delivered.

How can I donate to the foodbanks? There are many places that accept donations for the food banks. This includes permanent collection points in supermarkets, schools, businesses or your local church. To find out where you can donate in the area you live, contact your nearest foodbank on the telephone number below.

What happens TO the food after I donate it?

The food is then transported to a warehouse so that it can be accounted for. It is then dated and sorted before being distributed to those in need.

They will then have a chat with you and where appropriate, put you in contact with a relevant local agency to issue a foodbank voucher. If required, the agency can also provide you with contact details for further support including Citizens Advice Bureau, health visitors, local charities etc.

Where can I obtain a voucher to use the food banks?

Décor Interiors has been trading for one year in Glengormley. We have a stunning wallpaper and fabric showroom on the first floor and a fantastic competitively priced decorating centre on the ground floor, supplying a number of paint brands and decorating accessories. The showroom is described by customers as ‘a little gem in the heart of Glengormley’.

As Chairperson of the Glengormley Chamber, I enjoy being involved in current and future projects as well as decisions that will benefit surrounding businesses, including my own, going forward.

I took part in the Star Programme within the first year of our business opening. It included a number of evening workshops on different aspects and challenges that young businesses face.

Each evening was presented by a different specialist, covering areas such as marketing for small businesses, online advertising, social media usage and selling. During the programme everyone was allocated a mentor who helped with our individual needs. They were able to help us focus on areas where we felt our businesses could be improved.

The Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Business Awards will launch this September. With a wide range of categories up for grabs make sure you get your entry in and join us for a Gala Dinner in early 2018. Entries and more information will be available in September.

GET A FRESH START WITH EXPLORING ENTERPRISE Have you been unemployed for some time or are you a lone parent, a stay at home mum, disabled, employed part time or in part time education? If so, why not participate in the highly successful Exploring Enterprise Programme in Antrim? Exploring Enterprise is FREE and aims to help people into sustainable employment or self employment through tailored training, mentoring and by gaining a recognised qualification in Understanding Business Enterprise. Support on the programme includes CV preparation, employment searches, interview skills, writing cover letters and job applications, computer training as well as learning business enterprise and much more. One previous participant from Ballyclare, Jennifer Thompson, had her life turned around after taking part in the programme: “When I joined the programme I was very much at a crossroads with six young children. Whilst I wanted to get back into the workplace I did not feel I had the confidence in myself or skills to do this.

Since June 2016, the Council has supported 107 local residents to take their initial steps into self-employment through the ‘Go for It' programme.

Your business is just a simple application away from accessing up to ten hours free one-to-one advice.

If you are aged 16 or older and interested in being your own boss, then the ‘Go for It’ programme is for you. It will help you to fully explore your business idea with the advice and guidance of a business advisor.

Last year the Council’s ASK programme helped more than 50 local small businesses access over 250 hours of help in a variety of specialisms including social/digital media, marketing and sales.

As well as one-to-one advice, you will have support through finance and business planning workshops to help develop your business plan. This will help map out the initial start-up phase of your business, as it did for Grahame Harris (left).

IMPROVING LOCAL COMMUNITIES 16 projects which aim to improve life in specific areas across the Borough are underway. The projects are receiving funding of approximately £238,000; £75,000 from the Department for Communities and £163,000 from the Council. The programme aims to make things better for the people that live in these communities. Since the new Council was established, six areas now benefit from the funding, namely; Monkstown, Carnmoney, Mossley, Steeple, Ballycraigy and Farranshane. A big focus of the programme is giving our young people the skills they need to secure a more positive future. Local nursery schools are providing tutoring, parental guidance and better play resources to improve communication skills, helping young people to interact more at school and home. Primary schools are improving literacy with new fun ways to accelerate reading and math skills. Specialist tutoring programmes are tackling under achievement and improving self-esteem and overall achievement. At secondary level, updated IT equipment

will support a homework programme and improve pupil engagement. An enterprise programme is encouraging children to consider science careers and entrepreneurism, whilst community based programmes will offer employment support and personal, professional development. The more vulnerable or isolated people in the community are supported through single parent family programmes, sign posting and skills building. Community youth programmes will provide skills programmes and diversionary activities, building self-esteem and tackling anti-social behaviour. The Community Planning Partnership for Antrim and Newtownabbey recently launched Love Living Here, the Community Plan for our area. This ambitious plan takes a long term view and will seek to tackle the issues which most affect the day to day lives of our residents.

NEW PLAY PARK UPGRADE Plans are currently underway to upgrade the play park in Lilian Bland Community Park. Central to the approach we have developed for delivery of our community plan, is the widespread engagement of our citizens. AWARD WINNING ANTRIM Antrim town is back to winning ways as the town has recently been announced as the winner of the All Ireland Best Kept Award for Best Urban Centre. This is a fantastic achievement as the town was one of over 800 entries in the competition, with only 14 finalists from the whole of Ireland.

The online service enables you to create a new licence or renew an existing licence. You can also receive automatic email reminders so you know when your licence is due for renewal. Your licence will be emailed to you which means you will always have it handy. The process takes minutes and can be completed in the comfort of your own home, anytime of the day.

There is a lot of gardening that can be done in autumn. In this workshop we will look at pruning techniques. We will work out a manageable maintenance routine for your garden and look at low maintenance alternatives for hard and soft landscaping. We will also discuss how to get colour in your garden all year round.

These harvesting baskets were once made in vast numbers around the shores of Lough Neagh primarily at Gawley's Gate, Aghagallon and Aghalee with the larger versions used to collect and harvest potatoes and the smaller versions which we will be making, used to 'teem' and serve potatoes.
