2 | LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT + EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Braiding funding and utilization of our development, property management and supportive housing expertise allows Anawim Housing to be strategically placed to maximize this funding in transformative ways. Overlay the commitment to housing and the empathy that our team utilizes in serving our tenants, and we have created the foundation for people to find affordable homes that are safe, stable and supportive.

to meet the needs of people in our community, we are ready to step up to the plate. Unprecedented funding through the American Rescue Plan and HUD has offered once-in-a-lifetime chances to change the landscape of affordable and supportive housing.

The past year has presented Anawim Housing with opportunities and challenges. The challenges allow us to improve and adapt – which further ready us to meet new opportunities and challenges with honed skills and strategies. As a 501(c)(3) organization, Anawim Housing excelled during the COVID-19 pandemic because of our ability to be flexible, creative and nimble. We were ready to weather the crisis because of our talented and frankly awesome staff who are deeply committed to the mission of Anawim

Stuart and Greg met in 2020 when Greg moved into one of Stuart’s properties. Greg had experienced homelessness and was a resident in Anawim Housing’s Permanenent Supportive Housing program. As a landlord, Stuart had partnered with Anawim for over 12 years. But Greg was the first tenant that connected with Stuart personally – it was his relentless persistence in asking to work on a maintenance project for Stuart that set things in motion. Greg had previous experience in construction although he was currently unemployed. Stuart decided to give him a chance. Slowly over the next year, Stuart began trusting Greg more and more with various projects, from tiling to woodworking. He saw Greg’s determined work-ethic, skill and witty personality come to life and Greg found something important he’d been missing – a sense of purpose. Today, they are more than just a tenant and a landlord - they’re friends.

ReNew Crew supportive employment social enterprise continues to thrive and ReNew Crew Manager, Scott Sithonnorath, has helped share our successful model with other communities on a local, national and international level. This past April, Scott and Jeremy Orcutt – Director of Programs and Services – presented to fellow peers and leaders on ReNew Crew at the Housing First International Conference in Seattle, Washington. Removing barriers to employment for Anawim program tenants, and partnering with individuals to help them reach their goal of returning to work.

Catalyst is Anawim’s newly formed Community Engagement Council. The council is made up of passionate young professionals who share in our mission through education and advocacy, aimed at helping us shape the conversation of homelessness in Des Moines, rather than perpetuate the stereotypes and myths of homelessness. Joe Benesh, Catalyst member and president of The Ingenuity Company, has provided his expertise to help guide us through the process of council creation and development of purpose. Catalyst members include: Luke Austin, Principal Financial Group; Joe Benesh, The Ingenuity Company; Erin Knupp, Boyd Jones Construction; Greg Lin, Drake University; Chrissy Smith, Congruence Growth and Marketing Agency; Veronica White, Corteva

Anawim has purchased a former Days Inn hotel at 4845 Merle Hay Road in Des Moines, and is converting it into The Monarch Apartments – a complex made up of 40 one-bedroom and efficiency apartments that will house individuals experiencing homelessness. Anawim is pioneering this project as the first of its kind in our state. The population served by The Monarch Apartments will include those experiencing chronic homelessness as well as a hard-to-serve population who do not meet HUD qualifications for HUD funded Permanent Supportive Housing programs.

“I realized I had more to live for and I wanted to get better. Not just for me, but for my family because I couldn’t see myself without my family,” Sarah, Anawim Housing Program Tenant. It’s been over three years since Sarah first came to Anawim. Her experience with chronic homelessness, substance use and mental illness brought many challenges as she adjusted to home after homelessness. “I gave you guys hell when I got here. Such hell.” But housing is only the first step. For Sarah, it took reconnecting with her family – her sister Michelle – to find the strength she needed to get better. Today, Sarah chooses to focus on the good in her life and looks to her future with renewed hope. “I look forward to watching my niece grow up. I love it.”
