A CASE FOR THE RENOVATION OF ANATOLIA COLLEGE’S UPPER CAMPUS

the past is our foundation the future is our responsibility

Where Legacy Meets Vision

For generations, Anatolia College has stood as a symbol of excellence in education - deeply rooted in history, yet always evolving to meet the needs of its students and the world. At the heart of this journey is Macedonia Hall: our most iconic building, a sanctuary of learning, and the emotional anchor of the Anatolia experience. Generations have walked its halls - learning, growing, and shaping the future.

Now, as we look to the century ahead, we are reimagining the Upper Campus - Macedonia Hall, the surrounding open spaces, and the facilities that support it - not only to preserve its legacy, but to unlock its full potential. The restoration of Macedonia Hall, alongside the transformation of the attached Kyrides Building, is a bold and necessary step forward.

Just as vital is the greenification and overall beautification of the area, enhancing the outdoor environment in a way that reflects the spirit of the College and supports learning, connection, and well-being.

This is a call to those who believe in legacy, in innovation, and in impact. This is your invitation to help bring that vision to life - for today’s students, and for generations still to come.

A

Story Etched in Stone

Macedonia Hall is more than a building. It is a sanctuary of memory, meaning, and identity. Since its construction in the 1930s, it has been the symbolic and physical center of our campus. A starting point for every student, and a lifelong touchstone for every graduate.

Designed by American architect Lee Myer as part of the original master plan for our Thessaloniki campus, Macedonia Hall reflects the College’s New England roots and carries within its walls the echoes of Merzifon, where our story began. It has witnessed world wars, occupation, and transformation, as well as enduring acts of resilience.

During WWII, it served as a military hospital and later as the headquarters of the German army in the Balkans. After the war, Anatolia reopened its doors, and Macedonia once again became a place of learning. In 1974, it welcomed displaced students from Cyprus on scholarships - a moment that speaks to Anatolia’s lasting mission to include, and to give.

In 2001, a major restoration brought Macedonia Hall closer to its original glory; uncovering oak frames, cleaning its stone façades, and reviving its interiors with respect for the past.

Today, nearly a century since it first welcomed students, every corner of Macedonia Hall holds a story of learning, and every classroom carries the memories of generations. And now, it is time to ensure that this beacon continues to shine.

Preserving the Past, Preparing for the Future

Today’s educational landscape is changing rapidly. New teaching methods demand new kinds of spaces - flexible, inclusive, and technologically integrated. Our students need classrooms that inspire, adapt, and connect. Our educators need tools that empower them to innovate.

As a forward-thinking institution, we understand that honoring tradition also means preparing it for what’s next.

To remain at the forefront of educational excellence in Greece and beyond, we must continually align our campus with the future we envision.

That is why we are preparing Macedonia Hall and the surrounding Upper Campus to embrace the next century, creating learning environments where heritage and innovation coexist seamlessly, and where every space supports curiosity, creativity, and connection.

The time is now - because the future is already here. And Anatolia is, as always, ready to meet it.

EXPANDING THE VISION

Reimagining the Upper Campus

Our vision is more than a facelift; it is a holistic transformation. We are building a future-ready Upper Campus that elevates every part of the student experience.

At its heart lies the inspired renovation of Macedonia Hall - our most iconic academic space, reimagined for the century ahead. And just as Macedonia is being renewed, the adjacent Kyrides Building must evolve with it. Once an extension of Macedonia, Kyrides is now being reimagined as a bold, modern hub for learningfeaturing state-of-the-art classrooms, collaborative zones, and flexible labs, all designed to support contemporary pedagogy.

The historic “tower” of the Kyrides complex, which houses Tracy Hall, Jackson Hall (formerly Tsipos), and our Innovation Isle with its two signature labs - the Green Chemistry Lab and the Fab Lab - will be preserved and enhanced. These spaces reflect Anatolia’s commitment to sustainability, creativity, and hands-on exploration.

Surrounding these buildings, the open spaces of the Upper Campus will be transformed into a cohesive, walkable environment; blending historic architecture with contemporary design and inviting students, faculty, and visitors to engage, connect, and imagine.

What Will Change - and Why It Matters

Our redesign is based on a simple premise: spaces shape learning. When a classroom inspires curiosity, when a corridor sparks connection, when technology empowers creativity - education transforms.

Key changes include:

• Flexible learning environments that adapt to collaboration, discussion, and independent work

• Smart classrooms with integrated technology for hybrid teaching and digital tools

• Sustainable upgrades including energy-efficient systems, lighting, and HVAC

• Accessible and inclusive design, supporting all learners

• Open and welcoming common areas for informal dialogue and community-building

• Dedicated zones for teacher collaboration and interdisciplinary planning

These are not just upgrades but investments in how we think, create, and lead.
