Following the principles explored in the earlier studies of Abstract Interiorites, the design of the NFT gallery transforms Wonderspaces of Austin by using organic systems of space that come to define the occupants experience as they interact with the NFT art in its’ visual, video, auditory, and interactive forms. The composition creates an immersive experience that envelops one in the interior as an organic vessel, with the 3D printed cladding reshaping the form of the building. Moreover, the combination of spatial porosity in the form of the modules and the sinuously patterned circulation add a sense of curiosity to the space. The culmination of physical and digital interiors engages the occupant and brings our relationship with the newfound art of NFTs into question.

The organic qualities of interiority that provided the basis for the NFT gallery’s spatial porosity were explored through pattern generation in combination with the use of AI. These studies generated a more complex understanding of how abstract qualities can be used to define an interior, in this case looking out how organic objects such as caves or sponges are driven by the connections between networks of space. This concept was further investigated through both a digital and physical model, which was 3D printed.

The lighting throughout the galleries includes recessed floor lights, recessed wall lights, and pendant ceiling lights. The overall lighting strategy of combining these elements helps create a sense of way finding in the dark, sinuous interiors that at times may be hard to navigate based on the organic compositional form.

The Hancock is a Public House located in the intimate, historical Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston. The design of the cafe draws on concepts of localness and domesticity central to Boston’s character, focusing on the rich Victorian and Federal styles that encompass the architecture. With such, the furniture and finishes bring in an ornate quality and sophisticated reworking of these traditional styles while incorporating restored pieces as well. With technical and aesthetic qualities both considered, the Hancock creates a home-like space for both locals and visitors, drawing on the cuisine and pre-existing design style of the beautiful surroundings.

FINISH & FURNITURE SELECTIONS The selected finishes and furniture address sustainability and health standards that play an important role in both commercial and residential design. Tying to the ideas of localness explored, many furniture pieces are sourced from within Boston, coming from vintage collections and carpenters who draw on the area’s historical style in new approaches. The scheme of patterns and colors unify the distinct rooms and show the vivid style inspired by Victorian design.

A re-imagining of UT School of Architecture’s Hal Box Athenaeum and South Lobby, this design explores the compositional opportunities adapted from human, spatial, and contextual qualities of interiors. By understanding and exploring the relationships between these elements, forms can be uncovered and guide the design in a way that generates an overall sense of unity and cohesion. With such, proxemics became an essential part of the manner in which the design process was approached. Using the human body as a guide, the design addresses occupant needs through the development of social seating, arranged using principles of grouping and orientation. While the Hal Box Athenaeum and the South Lobby have different programs they focus on, they are unified in the overall design strategies and layout that lie at the foundation of the composition.

REL ATIONAL INTERIORS: C O N S I D E R A T I O N S O F S PA T I A L AND SOCIAL PROXEMICS

The overall compositions of both interiors rely on the pre-existing lines of extension to guide the approach to circulation, furniture interventions, and materials. The circulation is integrated within the envelope and creates a diagonal flow that guides the occupants throughout Goldsmith. While the placement of interventions somewhat dictates movement, the transitions between areas are seamless and allow for the exploration of the different programmatic zones.

The Memory Palace is a space created simply for the purpose of existing. A museum-like space designed by exploring the opportunities of spatial arrangement, the interior sequence of chambers embodies the designated region, Spain. In studying the folklore, climate, culture, and other characteristics of Spain, the spaces come to express these conditions and tell the stories of cultural folklore as well as traditions shared in the region. A large focus was held on the intentional sequencing of spaces, as the interiors should be created to guide the viewer and generate the desired environment and accompanying feelings. This can be displayed in the circulation of the space that has the power to alter the experience through the intentional organization of the chambers. In the approach to cultivating this Memory Palace, light and shadows became essential elements developed with intent through lighting studies and the creation of brise soleil screens.

BRISE SOLEIL AND LIGHTING STUDIES

The process of designing the Memory Palace began with studying how patterns created through a brise soleil can produce ephemeral lighting effects that change with time and impact our experience of interiors. Multiple iterations were created, each with their own unique qualities derived from the context of Spain through its’ culture and folklore. The final pattern is inspired by a Spanish fairytale, The Enchanted Castle in the Sea and reflects an abstraction of the waves in the ocean.
