MIDJOURNEY PROMPT AND USER GUIDE

Raw prompt text

/imagine prompt: a cowboy wearing a tuxedo on the moon

But to stylise it better using different styles in Midjourney

1. Style - keyword

providing a set of supporting prompt keywords associated with “styles” can create different outputs based on what kind of style you opt to choose. Here are some of the keywords and sub-types based on the artform/ design/artist/ genre you might want to choose as styles

a. Design/genre

b. Using artist name as style

/imagine horse galloping at sunset painting Andy Warhol style (Picasso, Da Vinci)

c. Using the rendering/lighting properties as style

2. Stylize the output

You can add the setting - - s<value> to denote style

/imagine firefighters --s 6000

3. Chaos - increase the abstraction

Take a number from 0 to 100 to increase or decrease the level of abstraction in the subject

/imagine Eiffel tower --chaos 60

4. Resolution

To specify the output resolution, you can use some of the usual keywords like 8K, 4K, photorealistic, ultra photocell, ultra detailed, intricate details etc.

Or you can go with the standard settings for predictable outputs hd and quality / --q are two such settings

/imagine red rose flower --hd

/imagine red rose flower --quality 5

5. Aspect Ratio

You can specify ratio of the width:length of your output image. This is called the aspect ratio. The default output is a square image (1:1 aspect ratio). But if you want a more cinematic view — or you just want to make a wall paper for your laptop, you can change the aspect ratio

/imagine jasmine in the wild flower --ar 4:3

6. Image as a prompt

If you want to get some outputs similar to an image style , ( when you want to get consistent outputs ) across multiple images, pass a URL of the image

/imagine http://www.imgur.com/Im3424.jpg box full of chocolates

The image generated will take cues from both the seed image ( from the URL you passed ) and also the text prompts.

You can give multiple images as prompts

You can specify weights to the images ( see the next point )

7. Weights to Image prompt

If you want your output to be looking more like your prompt image ( see the previous point), give a higher weightage to that image (keyword : --iw <number>) .

/imagine http://www.imgur.com/ks34f24.jpg chocolates —iw:4

8. Weights to text prompt

/imagine wild animals tiger::2 zebra::4 lions::1.5

9. Filtering out words from your image

Use the --no keyword to discard any unwanted subjects popping in your

/imagine KFC fried chicken --no sauce

10. Other prompts

* Sony Alpha α7, ISO1900, Leica M, = to specify any lens type or camera type

* photorealistic , ultra photoreal , ultra detailed, intricate details, = to specify some possible details and a realistic look and less of artistic

* unreal = to specify an unreal engine feel

* volumetric light , cinematic lighting = to specify some lighting conditions

PROMPTS

1. Ornate feature

/imagine detailed 2d wallpaper, tesseract pattern, repeat, black background, white and red highlights --tile --v3 --s 1000

use the parameter --tile to create beautiful lightinG effects ( eg: cinematic lighting, dark moody lighting )

change the text prompt from ‘Arabic pattern’ to any other ! Use your imagination ( geometric pattern , tesseract etc)

Note : tile parameter is only available in v3 . So make sure to over-ride your version to v3 if version 4 is set by default in your settings

go crazy with stylize parameter ( — — s ) and the objects you want to create a pattern out of . ( eggs, faces , birds , leaves …. what ever ! )

2. PATTERN/PATTERNS

/imagine black widow , concept art, dramatic, 35mm, insanely detailed and complex, hypermaximalistic, elegant, ornate, hyperrealistic, super detailed --q 2 --ar 9:16 —v4

keyword — ornate gives very intricate designs

When you are doing portraits, try portrait mode ( change the parameter for aspect ratio (--ar ) of 16:9 )

3. See what’s inside the bag — with the knolling layout

/imagine knolling layout of the contents of a travellers backpack , white background

the text prompt ‘knolling layout’ is a good way to demonstrate some key objects in a single image

4. Inspired keyword

/imagine assassins creed inspired, fantasy photography, full body shot , ultra realistic, hyper realistic , cinematic lighting --v4

use keyword inspired when you want to create a version of a character similar to an existing movie / animation / game character

5. Japanese water colors are fun — adding the local flavor

/imagine sumi-e japanese watercolor , dog , soft and muted colors, fine and detailed lines to create texture and depth, realism and fantasy --q 2 -- upbeta -- s 750 --v4

• If you are adding geographically / region specific image, ( eg: some Chinese characters or something typical to south-east Asia etc. ), find the local word for that object /style and add into your text prompt.

• Here, we have taken the example of a typical japanese water color artform called the sumi-e . ( Adding this keyword drastically changes the effect ) . ( try other terms like "Ukiyo-e painting"

"Yamato-e art" )

6. Creating life like, realistic faces and images — ‘hyper real’

/imagine scary clown , hyperreal photograph

use keywords hyper real photograph almost always creates a life like rendition of the image. You can use it for faces, objects and scenes.

7. Bringing alive any object — Anthropomorphize it !

/imagine anthropomorphic paper clip smiling --s 200 —v4

Adding keyword anthropomorphic makes an everyday object into a beautiful version of life ! Mostly useful if you are making cartoon characters out of ‘things’ .

8. For infographic illustration

/imagine infographic illustration of a Maserati Ghibli --ar 9:16 —v4

9. For architecture based

(a). Isometric view

/imagine isometric view of the inside of a kitchen —v4

(b). Landscape view

/imagine landscape design of a zoo —v4

(c). Design plans

/imagine design plan of a parking lot —v4

How to use the Describe prompt in Midjourney

Midjourney’s new Describe prompt will speed up your workflow, teach you better prompting techniques, and use fewer fast hours.

Here’s how:

Describe was a godsend when it came out. No more jumping to ChatGPT to get the right prompt. And let’s face it, those novel-length prompts from OpenAI were often no better than a simple one. Of course, that depends entirely on your use case, and there are some instances when ChatGPT is absolutely the way to go. For most of us, Describe is your new best friend.

What does it do?

Describe takes a photo and uses it as a base reference. I know what you’re thinking, “I could do that already with /imagine, Dave!” True, but Midjourney

didn’t write the prompt for you, did it? That’s what describe does. It writes four prompts for you, based on the image provided. You can use them as is, or add your own mods.

How do I use Describe?

Step One

Choose a reference image. I found this cool fairycore pic on Pinterest.

Step Two

An image I found on Pinterest for my base

Instead of using /imagine, you type /describe, like this:

The describe prompt in Midjourney

Notice how it immediately prompts for an image to be added. Just drag and drop one. It’s that simple. You’ll notice that the image URL is automatically added. No more right-clicking to copy the image address!

After dragging and dropping an image to the interface, it adds the image URL to the prompt.

Step Three

Hit Enter and the magic happens. Four prompts describing the image, the surroundings, lighting, style, and colors appear.

Four different prompts, each describing our fairycore girl in a different way. Step Four (final step)

Pick a prompt and tap the corresponding button. Let’s see what the first button [1] does:

Prompt [1]

a beautiful tattooed lady is sitting in the forest with bright blue hair and blue tattoos, in the style of floral accents, light teal and light green, earthcore, elaborate costumes, sony fe 12–24mm f/2.8 gm, photographically detailed portraitures, vibrant florals — ar 4:5 — v 5 —

Not bad. Here’s what the other three prompts gave me:

Prompt [2]

blue tattooed women at the forests, in the style of fairytale-inspired, vibrant florals, environmental portraiture, foampunk, mallgoth, close up, pictorial — ar 4:5

Images generated by the author

Interesting. It wrote women and gave us consistently two women. These are really cool.

Prompt [3]

tattoo woman with blue hair, costume, flower headgear, in the style of nature-inspired camouflage, kelly sue deconnick, evocative environmental portraits, emerald, 32k uhd, jessie arms botke, master of ink — ar 4:5

Prompt [4]

Images generated by the author

full body tattoo designs by emily dillard, in the style of evocative environmental portraits, green and azure, tokina opera 50mm f/1.4 ff, fairytale-inspired, margaret olley, 32k uhd, sublime wilderness — ar 4:5

Images generated by the author

This one is the least successful, as her hair is red now, but maybe the Margaret Olley styling did that? In any event, none of these images have crazy artifacts or additional anatomical features.

I hope this was helpful for you. BTW, here’s the image I chose:
