The appeal of forward-thinking clothes that provide both utility and comfort is obvious, but the term techwear and all it entails can be intimidating to understand. A good place to start is to define the term itself. Techwear is clothing for everyday life with special fabric, construction and properties that allow for breathability, movement, water-resistance and comfort. There's way too much to unpack about techwear in this space alone, so consider this an introduction to the essentials.

What Is Techwear?

The main appeal of techwear clothing is that it can make life easier, whether it's being able to carry more stuff on a weekend trip or to stay dry in a downpour.

fashion trends are concerned, that person could not be more wrong. Techwear has been on the rise for quite a while, but in 2018 it’s become less of a niche fashion style and more of a mainstream fit. We’re now dawning on a new era, an epoch where comfort, flexibility and self-reliance trump mindless, exorbitant flamboyance.

Some high street brands are using their platform for good and selling sustainable clothing. High street brands such as H&M, Urban Outfitters and ASOS are all participating in this, and you can easily find their sustainable sections on their websites.

Sustainable clothing also lasts longer in most cases, with eco- friendly fabrics being softer and stronger, sustainable clothing can guarantee you won’t have to keep buying new clothes.

DESIGN FOR LONGEVITY. Now that the surface is understood, it’s important to consider what’s going on underneath. While most performance gear is fungible, some brands have distinguished themselves for designing with an eye towards long-term durability. For saving the planet, that’s important: if you only ever need to buy one, you’ll put less junk into the world. It may not be as sexy as a bottle recycling story, but from a lifecycle of goods perspective, buying a single bomb-proof shell will use much less factory electricity and shipping oil than a stream of replacements.

RECYCLED FASHION. While you’re still buying new, let’s be realistic: companies won’t stop making newness any time soon. Take it or leave it, that’s fashion.
