A Successful NABC-2018 Reported By Guru Chakravarty

“J

ai Ho” Ananda Mandir! The annual threeday North American Bengali Conference, popularly known as NABC, hosted by Ananda Mandir at the Atlantic City Convention Center during June 29-July 1, 2018, came to a highly successful completion. Bengalis from all over USA and Canada and some even from India were in attendance. To begin with, registration for the conference, which had been problematic in the past, was a smooth sailing this time. Right away, you got your registration card to hang around your neck, along with a program booklet, a copy of the literary magazine, a brochure with details of all programs and the people who made it happen, and a copy of the special NABC issue of Ananda Sangbad. The conference opened on Friday evening with Vedic chant by our priest Biswabhai in the Hall “A”, the larger

of the two conference halls. He was followed by a large contingent of Ananda Mandir ladies, uniformly clad in saris of matching color, and singing while holding lighted candles. That was followed by national anthems of four countries – India, Bangladesh, USA and Canada. The focal opening show, “BANGALEE JAGO”—a journey through the heart of Bengal,

created and choreographed by the famous dancer Sukalyan Bhattacharya—was simply dazzling. The master of ceremony, Rituparna Datta, was notable in exceptionally good pronouncements. From the second day onwards, programs extended beyond the conference halls into meeting rooms. While the more popular musical shows by famous stars from India were held on the same floor, in Halls marked “A” and “B”, seminars and mov-

ies were on the third floor. The vast expanse between the two main halls were set up for a “bazaar”, food stalls, and for leisurely “adda”. Among the musical performers, Iman Chakraborty stood out as the most attractive singer, not only for her choice of music, but also for her artistic movements on stage in rhythm with her songs. Other notable singers like Anupam Roy with continue to page 4 }

A Report on Heritage Day Activities and Annual Fund-Raising Luncheon

S

unday, August 26, was a busy and successful day for Ananda Mandir. On that day, we not only celebrated the 71st anniversary of In-

By Debajyoti Chatterji dia’s independence from the British rule but also held our

annual fund-raising luncheon. Both events were well attended, enjoyable and rewarding.

Heritage Day Celebrations

Flag raising ceremony on Heritage Day

This year, August 15, the actual date of Indian independence, fell on a weekday. To allow greater participation by children and working adults, we scheduled the celebrations on Sunday, August 26, and decided to hold our annual fund-raiser that day as well. This was the first time we attempted this “double header” approach. Consider-

ing the end-of-summer vacation plans of many members, this combined event was a success. The main purpose behind celebrating Indian Independence Day at Ananda Mandir is to remind our children and young adults about the long and rich heritage of the country. To that end, various activities were planned for the morning of August 26. These are described elsewhere in this issue by Krishna Dutta Roy.
