Rabindra utsav Celebrated in Tagore hall Reported by Amitabha Bagchi Ananda Mandir joined hands with the Cultural Association of Bengal (CAB) to organize and celebrate “Rabindra Utsav” – a day-long cultural festival to commemorate the 156th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. It was held on Saturday, May 20, at the newly opened Tagore Hall on Ananda Mandir’s premises in Somerset, New Jersey. A key part of the festivities was to hold certain events outdoors and create an atmosphere reminiscent of Santiniketan and evocative of the poet’s spirit. One such event was an open-air inauguration program known as Baitalik. It began at 11 O’clock in the morning with a group of singers, dancers and ordinary attendees walking in a procession from the temple door to the gate of Tagore Hall while singing Tagore songs. They assembled in front of the hall, sang some more songs and did a few dance numbers. Baitalik was organized by Tandra Das with help from the alumni and alumna of schools founded by Tagore. It culminated in the unveiling of an image of Rabindranath, followed by a Lighting Ceremony. The Opening Ceremony was led by India’s Consul General in New York, Mrs. Riva Ganguly Das, with help from other guests. The Consul General then inaugurated an Exhibition on Alpana Art and Paintings by the invited artist, Sudhi Ranjan Mukherjee, visiting from Santiniketan. Next came welcome speeches by the Presidents of Ananda Mandir (Ashok Rakhit) and CAB (Milan Awon), followed by the Consul General’s address. The stage was now set for the cultural presentations, which formed the core of the program. The cultural presentations were a two-parter: afternoon and evening. The afternoon program featured musical, dance and theatrical performances by groups of artistes representing local Bengali organizations. The evening program showcased two singers visiting from India: Anindita Kazi
Riva ganguly das, Consul general of india in new York, with sudhi Ranjan Mukherjee and dhriti Bagchi
(granddaughter of Kazi Nazrul Islam) and Riddhi Bandopadhyay. There was a half-hour break for dinner between the two parts. The entire event concluded by 11 PM. The following twelve local organizations participated in the cultural program and were recognized as associate organizers of the event: Suddhaswar (Connecticut); Garden State Cultural Association (GSCA); Ananda Dhwani of Ananda Mandir; ICC; Surosree of NJ; AASTHA Theater Group; Surer Dhara; Ranjanee Group of NYC; Srishti Academy of Performing Arts; Rhythms of Dance and Music; CAB; and Kallol of NJ. Their performances were interspersed with a brief youth dance, Tagore songs on guitar, and a masterly PowerPoint presentation by Sudhi Ranjan Mukherjee on the evolution of alpana art form in Santiniketan – from Nandalal Bose to the present day. There were other touches of Santiniketan in the proceedings. One was Sahitya Sabha, organized in the style of schools back there, which featured music and short readings by the youth (teens and pre-teens) of our community. Another was an elaborate lighting program outdoors to usher in the evening. In the evening program, Anindita Kazi and Riddhi Bandopadhyay entertained the audience with melodious songs of Tagore, Nazrul Islam and other lyricists of that period. To add variety to the proceedings, aside from the cultural

programs, two seminars were arranged. The first one tried to explore the theme. “Tagore in the International Context – Influences and Impacts.” The actual seminar was titled “Rabindranath, Yeats and the Recep-
tion of Tagore in the West.” It featured lectures on the two poets and their interaction (as well as related topics, such as performing Daak Ghar in a Polish concentration camp during World War II) by two professors from Seton Hall University – Arundhati Sanyal and Elizabeth Redwine. The second seminar tried to explore the “View of Tagore from a Contemporary Perspective.” Titled “Rabindranath’s Internationalism in the Context of Today’s Rise in Nationalism,” it was an Open Forum discussion with spirited audience participation moderated by Amitabha Bagchi. Kudos are due to the three Co-Chairpersons of the event, Dhriti Bagchi and Tapas Sanyal (from New Jersey), and Sushmita Sarkar (from New York), for organizing an attractive and successful celebration in honor of Rabindranath Tagore.
