“A

real surprise awaited me on the evening of Friday, October 26, 2018.” A fund-raising event was scheduled to be held in Tagore Hall, a favorite venue for NJ-based Bengali families and cultural organizations. The hall had been reserved for that evening by Medha USA, “a sub-committee of Kallol of New Jersey, involved in charitable ventures for the education of underprivileged children in India.” Medha was originally known as Kallol Women’s Forum and founded by a small group of women who wanted to make a difference in the lives of needy children in India. I had followed Medha’s activities for several years with interest and attended many of their fund-raisers. These were traditionally held in a commercial banquet facility with multiple events being held simultaneously. And these fund-raisers were informal and fun gatherings, with modest cultural programs without the ben-

efit of a formal stage with adequate lighting or sound system. I would estimate that the events typically attracted close to 200 participants. For the evening of October 26, I had expected a similar set-up, except that Medha had the full use of Tagore Hall, with no other organization or event competing for space or attention. When I entered the Tagore Hall auditorium, I was simply stunned. Rows and rows of chairs were carefully organized, with wide aisles. By my estimate, there were over 400 chairs. Was Medha expecting a ticket-buying audience of such a size, I wondered. I soon learned the answer from a key member of the Medha team. The event was “sold out”, and they had stopped selling tickets two weeks ago! In fact, the organizers were turning away people who were coming in that evening, expecting ready availability of tickets, which is the norm for Bengali fundraisers for charitable causes. As the evening pro-

gressed, I understood why this Medha fund-raiser was a “sold out” event. First, the cultural program featured the famous Kolkatabased band, Chandrabindu. That was a huge draw for the young and the old alike. Second, the Medha team of 18 highly dedicated women worked tirelessly for almost two months to plan every detail for the event AND sell tickets and find sponsors. The Medha fund-raiser was a huge success by every measure. The audience loved Chandrabindu’s concert, the food service worked well for the huge crowd, and the short video showcasing Medha’s activities was interesting and informative. Most significantly, the event raised over $12,000 (after all expenses), probably a record for the local Bengali community for a charity fund-raiser. *** Medha USA is a perfect example of the saying, “From a tiny acorn grows a mighty tree”, – if the right conditions prevail, I might add. Medha began in 2006 as Kallol Women’s Forum, a

tiny group of volunteers with a big heart. This team began to raise tiny sums of money through sale of home-cooked snacks at Kallol events and other community gatherings with the ambitious objective to help educate underprivileged kids in West Bengal and other parts of India. Their first “snack sale” raised $300. Undeterred, they continued – and expanded – their fundraising activities and financial support of educational charities in India (and to a limited extent, in the US). By 2017, their annual revenue had increased to over $15,000, and they were supporting educational initiatives in India and NJ to the tune of about $12,000/per year. Currently, Medha is providing financial assistance to 8 educational initiatives in West Bengal and 2 in New Jersey. Details about each of this initiative can be found on Medha’s website: www.medhausa.org. Medha is not a passive organization that simply sends checks to these educational initiatives. Medha members visit these institutions whenever they travel to Kolkata and personally review the work being done there with the funds contributed by Medha. continue to page 6 }
