Ananda Mandir Expansion – An update Reported By Ashok Rakhit, Chair, Construction Committee As Ananda Mandir is getting ready to welcome you to upcoming festivities of Fall 2013, I would like to thank you for your generous support during our Annual Fund Raising Luncheon held on Sunday, June 30th. We raised close to $200,000 that will be of great help to meet our target for this year. This is critical because we have a commitment to Unity Bank to raise $1.0 million by the end of the year to meet our obligation for the construction loan. We are confident that by the end of this year, we will be able to reach our goal with your help during the upcoming events of Durga Puja, Kali Puja and our Bijoya Celebration of “India Utsav”. Like last year, we plan to invite a group of well-known artists from Kolkata to celebrate this Fall festive season with all our members, patrons and volunteers. Please mark your calendar for India Utsav to be held on Saturday, November 23rd at Nicholas Music Hall at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ. We will announce more details in our website shortly. On construction status, we just completed foundation of the expanded temple. Site work is going simultaneously to build underground sewer and connect to retention basin (see attached picture). Consciousness in Physical World By Pronoy Chatterjee Meeting with Chanakya at his kitchen next to a Kali temple in the afternoon hours when he is free from his morning chores is quite relaxing, enjoyable, and rewarding. He talks about the history of our religious culture how the original Jagannath's murti was carved out of a century old log floating on a river by a sculptor who couldn't finish carving its hands and so we have armless Lord Jagannath in the Puri temple; the origin of “Ratanti” Kalipuja and the man who started it; or about Shiva's wakening from a deep sleep followed by an earth shattering dance with his third eye wide open creating the universe by just seeing “shunya (nothing)”. Chanakya is also humorous, and can mimic individuals' style of talking by modulating his voice, which makes us laugh. Our meetings though are never one sided talks; he would from time to time ask certain questions that would allow us to dwell on whatever we know of them and he would listen attentively. We typically have these lively conversations while enjoying his hospitality with tea or coffee and snacks that he usually makes with his own recipe. During one of those leisurely conversations, he said that sometimes in the morning while sitting alone at the temple he would sense that two identical persons were roaming around somewhere in this universe, but

at different places and at the same time.” Then he said, “Do yo u t h i n k t h e r e i s a ny explanation about this or am I getting insane?” I could not immediately capture what he exactly meant, but a moment later it struck me that when he said, “two identical persons in two different locations at the same time,” he was apparently sensing in his subconscious mind that a single person appeared in two or more places at a split second, giving an illusion of simultaneous appearance of the same person. I wondered if it were really possible that a single object, or a human being in this particular case, could exist in two or more locations at a split second. We heard that these outstanding feats were possible for Gods and ancient sages, but not for ordinary human beings like us. So, at the outset, I thought it was absurd and Chanakya's imagination had no basis, it's simply his hallucination. Then I thought, well, it's not so; we cannot completely ignore his imagination that a person could exist at two different locations at any instant. Though we may not be able to explain it with the scientific knowledge of today, we may be able to do so some day in the future. Introducing quantum mechanics, a discipline of physics, where a famous

scientist told Einstein that a subatomic particle has the probability of existing in multiple locations but our observation makes it set in one position, Einstein remarked, “ You mean the moon [made up of those particles] is smeared throughout the sky and my looking at it caused it to fix in one position? It's a spooky concept.” Had Einstein been alive in twenty first century he would have regretted his own remark. Modern scientists are shooting towards coming up with a model to explain that objects of all sizes follow quantum laws, thus it could possibly have a probability of existing in multiple locations at a split (nano) second, giving an illusion that it is existing in multiple locations simultaneously. But, it's too complex a task to prove experimentally or mathematically at the present time. However, they are making quite a good progress in the field, and once they achieve it, the history of creation will have a new chapter written. Niels Bohr, a friend of Einstein, and a few other eminent scientists, such as Schrödinger, De Broglie, Feynman, etc., pioneered a scientific theory known as

“quantum mechanics,” which states that subatomic particles, which constitute an atom for example, are in reality not objects confined in tiny spaces with well-defined boundaries, but spread out as waves in space which however collapse to confined boundaries as soon as they are observed. This concept implies that a fundamental subatomic particle exists in multiple locations, but takes a fixed position as soon as it is observed by any object. This concept has been scientifically derived and mathematically illustrated and it is now a widely accepted theory. This is the basic concept of “quantum mechanics.” Einstein never believed it and thought it was an incomplete theory, but it is an acceptable concept today. In discussing quantum mechanics in a book, the authors Bruce Rosenblum and Fred Kuttner remarked, “In trying to understand the atom, physicists built quantum mechanics, the most successful theory of science and the basis of one-third of our economy. They found, to their embarrassment, that with t h e i r t h e o r y, p h y s i c s encounters consciousness.” Physicists do not like to deal with consciousness, only philosophers and spiritual Turn to page 07
