Periodicals Published by Bengalis in North America: Quo Vadis? By Debajyoti Chatterji When the first wave of Bengali immigrants began to arrive in North America some fifty years ago, they brought with them the Bengali love for good food, good companionship, good music and movies, and good books and magazines. Except for the lucky few who settled in large metropolitan areas and had discretionary income to spare, these immigrants had to forgo tasty Bengali fish dishes and sweets because of lack of availability of key ingredients. They also had no access to recently released Bengali movies, recordings, newspapers, books or magazines. In the early years of their lives in their adopted homeland, they made up for these missing pleasures by enjoying fiercely the one thing they could find and afford: good companionship or adda with friends. Out of this great Bengali tradition, successfully transplanted to North America, grew a number of “cultural associations”. These associations or clubs were formed to keep Bengali culture alive through whatever activities the communities could marshal: poetry readings, music lessons, summer picnics, even staging of one-act plays. As Bengali community groups evolved in North America, they decided to organize major socioreligious events like Saraswati Puja or Durga Puja or Kali

P u j a . Fo l l o w i n g puja traditions of “back home”, these newly-established organizations also decided to publish puja patrika or souvenir magazines. These publications were designed to feature creative writings in Bengali and English, usually with the avowed objective of kindling a love of literature among community's children. Today, most Bengali cultural associations in North America publish some kind of puja patrika. Some of these magazines attempt to publish quality literary works while others are designed more as fund-raising brochures than as serious literary endeavors. In time, Bengali organizations in some locations matured to a stage when they could go beyond puja patrika and embark on publication of true sahitya patrika or literary magazines.

Take the case of Bengali organizations in New Jersey, a state with a very large Bengali population. In 1970, New Jersey Puja Association (NJPA) was born in central New Jersey. Soon thereafter it began publishing a hand-written magazine, Paathshala. The organization also established a Bengali language school for community children. Paathshala ceased publication after a couple of years but it planted the seed for a larger effort to be undertaken by Kallol of New Jersey. Kallol

began publication of Kallol Sahitya Patrika in 1976. For some time Kallol Sahitya Patrika (now called Sahitya Patrika) followed the handwritten format of Paathshala. In the early 1990s, the magazine progressed to a typed format, thanks to the Bengali font developed by a member. Kallol members used to go to a local Staples store to photocopy master pages, and then hand-staple photocopied pages to produce individual copies of the magazine. In time this labor of love became well established as a literary magazine and attracted authors and readers from NJ and elsewhere. Another NJbased Bengali organization, Ananda Mandir, launched Anandalipi, a dual-language literary magazine like Kallol Patrika, in 2005. It, too, has developed a loyal following within and outside New Jersey. Returning to the early days Turn to page 05

Ananda Mandir Expansion – An update Reported By Ashok Rakhit, Chair, Construction Committee Spring is here although the weather is still somewhat cold and unpredictable. Although it has not slowed down our construction schedule, we expect to speed it up with warmer weather coming soon. In the meanwhile, we are getting ready to finalize the shop drawings of the steel structure of the two buildings, the temple extension and the community center. We are close to completion of the foundation for the community center as shown in the picture above. The next in line is the foundation for the temple extension. To keep our community informed, we will update the progress in our efforts to reach our goal in every issue of this quarterly news magazine. Thank you for your continued support.
