Affordable Housing is a crisis and it is necessary to understand the needs to which the homeless are exposed and at the same time educate ourselves more about the problems that exist now with the development of housing. Therefore, the proposal seeks to intervene as a network of community that offers different services, housing, or shelter. The site is located in front of Taylor Yard Bridge in Elysian Valley. The conditions and needs of individuals can limit their desire to remain in traditional shelters. The program combines housing and basic services to provide resources for this group that tends to be ignored by the public, with the aim of being a support system for them. Allowing everything to be in one place, trying to facilitate and eradicate the long distances that homeless people have to walk when needed. The design of the project has a variety of shared spaces that seek to allow socializing and create a community space where they can support each other.

The two different buildings host different users, one of the for single occupants and the other one for families.

Both buildings have shared spaces on every floor, as well as different green spaces where the aim is to provide a therapeutic and recreational space, taking mental health as a priority. The ground floors have all the basic services that can be used by anyone.

El Sabor De Mis Raices is a culinary school program that focuses on teaching the techniques and traditional dishes of Latin America that represent the different Latino groups of Boyle Heights. The development of the project arises based on the needs of the residents and the problems that have arisen in recent years with the gentrification of the area, as well as the lack of entrepreneurial opportunities due to the rise in the economy. The purpose of this program is to provide the space, and tools, to celebrate the traditions and recipes created over generations. The users doing the program will learn to develop their food businesses, obtain a license, and have space to start selling their products, contributing to the economy of their community with businesses focused on the Latino community. In the same way, this program manages to celebrate the traditional and unique flavors that are experienced in this great cultural variety. Latin American culture revolves around these unique flavors and sharing these moments with family or loved ones. Maintaining the traditions is important since it speaks of each culture, just as each dish represents an identity. Each of these spaces also has a dining area and open spaces for people to enjoy the food.

The architectural design is composed by different geometric figures commonly used in the papel picado technique. The use of this traditional technique is used in Latin America for celebration and special moments.

Papel picado transforms a space as it hangs high in both interior and exterior spaces.

The building consists of four main programs: the collective kitchen, mercado agricultores, food corridor, and bakery. Students will do their practices and learn from experts to later execute and produce in the kitchen.

The Silver Lake multi-family housing project located in Silver Lake is a proposal focused on the development of housing for young adults and families. Taking into consideration the high demand in one of the most popular areas of Los Angeles. The organization of the homes has allowed the creation of outdoor sharable spaces in between every floor for the user due to the new needs since COVID-19.

The project design has allowed the integration of green spaces with a grid system where each floor has access to the main street through the waterfall terraces. Allowing interaction between the residential area and ground floor that has different food establishments, as well as access for pedestrians to circulate the different establishments and green areas.

FAUNA FABRICS Summer 2023 - Fourth Year Faculty Advisor: Irma Ramirez / Ernesto Perez In collaboration with Ryan Y. and Cynthia T. Software: Rhino, Adobe CS, Enscape

Fauna Fabrics comes from this idea of the many layers that make up this project, from the inspiration based on the four affirmations of Shintoism which are: love for nature, family/tradition, cleanliness, and festivals. Love for nature is represented by the animal sanctuary and adoption center, where we raise awareness and provide opportunities for humans and animals to spiritually reconnect like in past generations.

The developed portion of Fauna Fabric was a re-evaluation for a mutual understanding of nature in an urban setting. The components of the individual architectural pavilions and the green artery connector are meant to be a regional paradigm for opportunities within the requirements of various environmental situations. The project was in response to the inhumane conditions of animals at animal cafes. However, through the tabula rasa-like approach, the concept eventually focused on the physical and spiritual relationship of animals and humans through green spaces. Despite its conceptual nature, the development of Fauna Fabric provided insight and application of various contextual scales.

The santuary can be the platform that is the voice of those who cannot speak. The space that allows animals and human beings to connect naturally, allows for that spiritual connection to happen and allow to provide that healing element of family.
