2020 - 2022 | new construction DEME pavilion

The site belongs to a prestigious company in Belgium, specialized in marine works. It is located in the industrial area of Zwijndrecht, along the river Schelde.

The intervention on the entire plot consists of the extension of an existing parking building with office spaces, restructuring of the company’s headquarters building, and redesign of the existing park. In the new landscape the client envisioned a pavilion which can tell their storry through its space, represent their prestige through its configuration, and blends with the greenery of the park.

Functioning as a unifying element, it is linked with the two buildings through the pahts of the landscape and connected with the HQ through a sinuous canopy.

We must acknowledge that if we do not cooperate on a global level we cannot have an economic safety net, so entire countries may collapse. The only limitation we have is our hatred. In order to defeat the virus we need to overcome our hatred and cooperate. We must trust each other so we can deal with this crisis

Play is the new way of learning. Play is for people to experience and find oneself, for we believe by knowing oneself, one can offer affection to the other and cooperate better. In NOAH PALACE you are free to explore, because you are not constrained by the physical forms, nor by a fixed number of activities. In NOAH PALACE you can choose what you learn, and you can learn from, or with other people.

The future belongs to those who play well together!

The design proposal transforms the space situated at the ground level of Merbl Palace into a bookstore. Merbl Palace is one of the 12 palaces built in Secession Style, which are part of the historical heritage of Timisoara. The transformation consists of the refurbishment of the interior and design of new furniture. A new element which shapes the space is the platform, which becomes the second level, on witch books are displayed. Its most astonishing design element is the stair which defines the character of the space. There were no structural interventions.

This small home is located in the vibrant neighbourhood of Saint Gilles in Brussels. The house was in a derelict state and needed to be fully renovated. One of the main challenges of the project is its proximity to the historical government house. As this is a listed property, all adjoining homes have to scrupulously respect an “aesthetic modesty”… The clients, a young couple, wanted to fully refurbish the property in a contemporary manner, restructuring all the spaces and adding an important extension on the back of the house. The front façade is partially replaced by a 2 story glass curtain wall offering privileged perspectives and an abundance of natural (http://www.k2a.be/)light.

Ceaușescu planned to test the elevators which were designed to be used for the People`s House. Given that the elevator test tower, built in 1972, was only 37 meters in hight, the comrade ordered for a bigger tower to be built, 37 meters higher than Schneider tower, which was 77 meters in hight. The elevators of the People`s House were planned to go through such a deep shafts because they were engineered to go down to the atomic shelter. As a result, the tower IFMA was created, in close proximity to Gara de Nord, for the safety of the communist leader. (translation of Alex Iacob’s text, ‘Turnul IFMA’, www.vice.com)

THE ECONOMICAL ENGINE accomodates the office program, responsible for collecting flows of people.

The quality of the street is shaped by the configuration of the levels of the building which align with it.

THE COATING protects the ‘economical engine’ and feeds the ‘social engine’; it is composed of elements which function as cilia; it helps with the adjustment of the temperature in the office spaces, and provides the apartments and gardens with water, after it is collected from the atmosphere.

The outside is as important and definitive as the inside. What we have are not objects and an exterior reality, but continuity between forms that wrap and unwrap, open and close, that focus and serve as a focus. Architecture thus expands in reality, in a medium and in the environment. The medium in which it appears is a field.

PROGRAM: Experimental | Another type of house

STATUS: School project | Experiment

2015 - 2016 | 4th year | 2nd semester insertion in typical sites104 http://socialprosthetics.tumblr.com/

SOCIAL PROSTHETICS is an architectural experiment for the final presentation at Ion Mincu University of Architecture. The experiment examines the impact that a house has on its environment and how a house responds to its environment.

The studio project, having the theme a house for, included 8 sub-themes coordinated by 8 tutors. Our theme, a house for Klaus Nomi proposed, as a starting point for this experiment, to explore the personality of the singer Klaus Nomi. He was known, besides his unique theatrical live performances by his unusual costumes.

(Jose Morales, The Metapolis Dictionary of Advance Architecture, ACTAR, 2003)

Our goal was to understand the concept of home which is more than a shelter, and also how a house can reflect what you are and what you want to be.

The idea of house was represented by three costumes designed according to each own personality. The costume is similar to a prosthetics device, which helps improving the ability of integrating into society.

a house for Klaus Nomi 105

PROSTHETICS ...architecture cannot limit itself to simply extending the body, or sustaining it, but rather it must be simultaneously a receptive and active supplement; a device which is singular (autonomous and artificial) and complicit (individual and interactive); estranged from, and at the same time sensitive to, the particular; capable of regulating itself and, at the same time, of restructuring, restimulating and strengthening the host in order to take it beyond its own limits: revealing that which was hidden. Architecture must work as an “antitype” which is in syntony with the host body so as not to provoke rejection, yet no longer in harmonious symbiosis with it.

(Manuel Gausa, The Metapolis Dictionary of Advance Architecture, ACTAR, 2003)

HOME The actual place of residence -resistance of the subject in the city always been the home. Public space does not pertain to the dweller, not only because it belongs to others, but because at the same time it is controlled. At home are all the things that never found a precise place. At home, one finds all the things that memory has cornered. Memory would be, then, the place of space more than time. With memory, duration no longer exists to allow imprecise residing.

2015 - 2016 | 4th year | 2nd semester insertion in typical sites106

my costume will illustrate the independence, the imposing, a unapproachable personality, but at the same time the sophisticated. Through the costume I want to express the mystery; one must ask oneself what is behind it.

Like the placenta, the costume is an intermediate between me and the outside world.

As the pregnancy progresses, the placenta loses thickness, so the exchanges are more intense. (https://edukalife.blogspot.ro)

To express my masculinity means to hide my vulnerability. A man is strong, independent human being. The features of a woman are sensibility, dependence, vulnerability, both physically and mentally.

The costume is designed based on the idea of the PLACENTA, which is the organ that emerges in the umbilical cord and allows the intermediation between the mother and her baby or breeding as the pregnancy develops. Thanks to the placenta, which attaches to the uterus, baby can be nurtured, breathe and expel waste.

Hence,be.

a house for Klaus Nomi 107

For a woman, the clothes are weapons against the others, and help her project herself where she wants to be; they express what she is, and at the same time what she wants to

2015 - 2016 | 4th year | 2nd semester insertion in typical sites108

I also empathize with other people in order to understand them better. Illustrating this side of my personality, through my costume I want to express my social adaptation.

Femininity means sensibility and acceptance of this sensibility. The idea of my costume is based on two characteristics which define me, part of the sensitive side of my personality.

a house for Klaus Nomi 109

There are moments in my life when I found myself not being self-reliant, and because of that I feel the need of others` appreciation for my ideas or my actions. In order to have their approval, I adapt myself to them.

2015 - 2016 | 4th year | 2nd semester insertion in typical sites110

I would like to express these dependencies as a burden. The idea of the costume that I have in mind illustrates this struggle, but at the same time expresses my inner strength.

I found myself dependent of some factors which induce me a state of physical and mental comfort. These dependencies are like a baggage which one has to carry, and which fosters one`s comfort, but at the same time diminishes one`s strength.

A woman is more vulnerable when she has to ‘carry’ her dependencies, while a man is capable of ‘carrying’ them by himself and being independent.

a house for Klaus Nomi 111

Body language is a form of communication which helps to establish the relationship between two entities. Through this experiment, we concluded that a costume reflects one`s personality or what one wants to be. It influences the perception of external entities about one` self.

The experiment examines the impact that a house has on its environment and how a house responds to its environment.

A house performs in its environment. There are interchanges between a house and its environment. A costume is a house for the body and mind.

Social stratification cannot be abolished completely, but equalization of access to information and resources, differences between social classes, will be reduced.

VR (virtual reality) already manifests in our contemporary society in some way or another, but it will not reach a higher degree of importance, it will only gain momentum. Its role will be to offer experiences in relation with the physical reality; VR will become a sort of a platform.

A new society is developing in which abundance and diversity creates a desire to experience and to know; basic needs are easily met, the focus as such, switches from consumption of products towards consumption of true experience.

We foresee a society where the right / access to information prevails, it becomes content, in which claims to technological patents are abolished and the technology is open-source.

Recording technology and the pervasive network will facilitate not only immediate access to information but also their broadcasting. This means a dissolution of the media industry as we know it today; in a society where each individual becomes a “broadcasting channel” the profession of journalism as we know it today is metamorphosed. We see 2067 as a global utopia. Our most current problems have been resolved, they most likely are replaced by a new suite of global dilemmas that are too complex to be anticipated in the near future because of the possible ramifications; a global utopia strongly influenced by features that define the world on a global scale, contaminated, on one hand by some specific attributes of the local population that currently inhabits this territory, and on the other by the transit of those populations that we anticipate.

Power & Post-Politics.PoliticsAristotel was a cyborg.

The new architecture is in a anthropic state, the interaction between the user and used becomes more complex. The built environment is composed of a series of volatile parameters that are directly related to activities. Time becomes the key element of the consumer society and space ...a pretext to consume time.

Experiences become an integral part of the economy.

The old educational system will underpin a deconstructed and reconstructed educational network that will encourage interdisciplinary and collaboration. Scientific progress is one of the goals in the society of 2067.

The price to live in the City. Dissolved boundaries. We will be the witnesses of a mixed society, whose borders are being dissolved in a world where nomadism or “dwelling en route” have become the status quo.

conceptual representation of FUN PALACE

[...] this new society divided into bits of information, the pillars of the new infrastructure, develops together with the landscape, a new form of intensity - a osmotic membrane that dissolves and reconfigures the static, the material, the permanence; thus the residual character of the interstitial environment gathers a new dimension: of a space as a mirage; in this newly created dimension, that sum of spaces that we may call the city, loses its boundaries and becomes a sum of time-actions, a non-space;

[...] “fun is in the eye of the beholder”...What is in fact fun? - a process defined by an input, a field of actions augmented by layers of sensations, stimuli, colors, spontaneity, unpredictability, suspense;

[...] this new, moral and spiritual, social structure of the year 2067, shows itself as a series of instable systems,in a continuous transformation, it rearranges, reorganizing itself in a perpetual movement of contraction and dilatation, the pulse that conjures the basis of a new circulation, a new path for experience and in fact of the experiment;

[...] this new society, witnesses a new vocabulary in a state of permanent change,; architecture folds itself in an assemblage defined by these unstable parameters of this new social structure, it assumes a risk, it offers us a chance, it holds us in a excited state and it offers us in the end this perpetual process, always “in-progress’, an environment of fun, a fun place, a FUN-PALACE.

[...] the process of creation, simulation, design, is altered by this new spatial framework where time becomes a forth dimensional component of the city;

[...] the substance becomes “flow” controlled by a disciplined and choreographed movement of a culture of exchange where education and entertainment become edutainment- the main conductor of the osmotic membrane which generates the ephemeral character of the interstitial - the zipspace;

Having this in mind, the concept was shaped on the idea of growth, intertwined with the idea of bringing together the people into a community. Thus, we created, on one hand, the grid which gives the architecture the possibility to adapt to new situations, and on the other hand, the spaces shaped so as to foster the interaction between the inhabitants.

We envisioned that the constructions in close proximity to the site would be demolished because of their poor functional state, permitting the development of this new organism.

The site is located between two zones: one agitated, in a state of growth, in relationship with the train station; the other calm, with one-level or two-level houses. The site is like an anteroom, connecting these two areas.

The project aims to bring in a harmonic symbiosis the characteristics of each area.

The building is shaped by 3.4m x 3.4m modules, that joins together, shaping the spaces inside, or creating terraces.
