25–28 Lúnasa/August Féile Chultúir Ghaelaigh agus Cheoil Traidisiúnta Irish Culture and Traditional Music Festival

Focal ó An Droichead A word from An Droichead Agus an ochtú Féile An Droichead ag druidim linn, is iontach liom an méid fáis agus forbartha atá le feiceáil ar imeachtaí ealaíne agus pobail ag An Droichead. Mar is gnáth, is sár-shampla den ardú caighdeáin sin clár fhéile na bliana seo. Tá sé ina chomhartha maith den tógáil atá déanta againn ar sholáthar agus ar chlú An Droichead go bhfuil leithéidí Altan sa chlár – réaltaí ceoil atá chun tosaigh i stair dhéanach ár gcultúir Ghaelaigh – chomh maith le Glen Hansard, Brendan Begley agus muintir ‘Naomhóig na Tinte’, a ghlacfaidh muid ar thuras farraige agus ceoil ag ceolchoirm a bheidh ar cheann de na buaicphointí i saol thradcheol na cathrach i mbliana. Is mar gheall ar fhorbairt leanúnach ár soláthair gur chinn muid ar na mallaibh dul i mbun tionscadail úra turasóireachta, go dtig leis an méid is mó daoine, idir chónaithe áitiúla agus cuairteoirí, blás a fháil ar oidhreacht s’againn. Beidh muid ag fógairt sonraí na n-imeachtaí úra sin go luath ach ní miste a rá cé chomh luachmhar is atá an tacaíocht atá faighte againn dár bpleananna turasóireachta ón Bhord Turasóireachta agus ón Chomhairle Ealaíne. Comhpháirtithe ar leith iad beirt agus muid ag iarraidh freastal a dhéanamh ar phobal agus ar lucht éisteachta atá níos mó agus níos ilchineálaí ná riamh.

Beidh imeachtaí na Féile ar siúl ag ár lárionad i gcroílár an phobail agus i lár na cathrach mar is gnáth, agus gabhaim buíochas leis na comhpháirtithe eile a bheas ag cuidiú linn chun sain-táirge s’againn a chur os comhar muintir na cathrach ina n-ionaid féin. Mholfainn daoibh tacaíocht a thabhairt do na hionaid chéanna le linn na bliana agus iad ag déanamh a ndícheall chun cultúr Bhéal Feirste a chothú. Tá súil agam go mbainfidh tú féin sult as imeacht nó dhó ag Féile An Droichead 2016. Coinnigh súil ar an suíomh úr ag androichead.com agus bí i dteagmháil trí na meáin sóisialta. Go bhfeice muid roimh i bhfad thú. Pól Deeds Príomhfheidhmeannach, An Droichead

With the eighth Féile An Droichead on its way, the growth and development in An Droichead’s programme of arts and community events is clear to see. As usual, this year’s festival programme offers a shining example of the quality of traditional entertainment on offer in Belfast today. It’s a sure sign of how the An Droichead brand and provision has been built up that this festival programme boasts the likes of Altan – stars of the trad world who have been centre stage in the recent history of our Gaelic culture – along with Glen Hansard, Brendan Begley and the rest of ‘Naomhóig na Tinte’, who will take us on a maritime musical journey in a concert that is set to be one of the highlights of this year’s trad music scene in Belfast. This steady development in our provision has led us recently to design new tourism initiatives so that we can reach the maximum amount of residents and visitors, providing them with a unique taste of our heritage. We will announce details of these new experiences shortly but it is worth noting the invaluable support of the Arts Council and Tourism NI in developing our plans. They have shown themselves to be outstanding partners in facilitating our efforts to serve a community and an audience that is broader than ever.

As is now customary, this year’s festival events will take place both at our lárionad in the heart of the community, and in our city centre hinterland. I want to thank those partners who have invited us to put our unique offering on display in their venues. They deserve your ongoing support for their own efforts to promote and nurture Belfast’s culture. I hope you will enjoy one or two events in the 2016 An Droichead Festival. Keep an eye on the new website at androichead.com and keep in touch through social media and I hope we’ll see you soon. Pól Deeds CEO, An Droichead

Camino Na Sáile A night of songs, music and stories from Glen Hansard, Brendan Begley and the crew of Naomhóig Na Tinte.

Is cúis bhróid agus áthais í d’An Droichead go bhfuil criú inspioráideach Naomhóig na Tinte linn chun ár bhféile a oscailti mbliana, ceoltóir iomráiteach Glen Hansard agus laoch ceoil traidisiúnta Brendan Begley ina measc. Déanfar ceiliúradh ar an mhórthuras ag an imeacht speisialta seo trí cheol traidisiúnta, trí amhráin agus trí chomhrá. This inspiring crew have been making an epic voyage to join the official Camino route across Northern Spain; in a handmade, traditional, wooden framed, canvas covered boat they made themselves; known locally in the Dingle peninsula as a Naomhóg.

The Pipes, The Pipes Ceol agus Ealaín Bheo/ A Music and Live Art Performance.

In ómós don uirlis is ársa agus is Gaelaigh dá bhfuil againn cuireann Féile An Droichead an seó speisialta seo i bhur láthair. Le scoth an cheoil ó rogha na bpíobairí agus ealaín bheo tá muid cinnte go mbeidh an t-imeacht seo ina cheiliúradh spreagúil den cheol traidisiúnta. The Pipes, The Pipes is a homage to the singular magic of the Irish Uilleann Pipes. At the heart of this live experience is the playing of a trio of exceptional pipers, Leonard Barry, Maitiú Ó Casaide and John Tuohy. Visual artists Lionel Palun and Donal Dineen respond to the mesmerising soundwaves they create by conjuring a magical picture show, unique to every performance.

Altan le tacaíocht/support from Kern.

Tá Altan ar an fhód le níos mó na tríocha bliain agus ní beag an tionchar a bhí acu ar éisteoirí agus ar shaol an cheoil anseo in Éirinn agus thar lear. Ó Ghaoth Dobhair i nGaeltacht Thír Chonaill tá áthas orainn an sárbhanna ar leith seo a thabhairt chuig An Droichead don chéad uair. With their exquisitely produced awardwinning recordings, ranging dynamically from the most sensitive and touching old Irish songs all the way to hard hitting reels and jigs, and with their heartwarming, dynamic live performances,

Agus í dé bhunú Chontae An Chláir ach ag cur fúithi anseo i mBéal Feirste, tá album nuálaíoch curtha le chéile ag Josie, mar atá i Modal Citizen. Modal Citizen is Josie’s debut solo album from an intimate, inventive, soul-searching fiddle player. This compilation takes the listener on an evocative musical pathway interweaving some of her trad favourites with innovative compositions that connect to her roots, the music of east Clare.
