Born and bred in Cúil Aodha, in the West Cork Gaeltacht, with Seán Ó Riada as neighbour and an indisputable early influence. Twice Grammy nominated, Ó Lionáird has worked with a stellar cast of composers internationally. Steve Cooney & Iarla Ó Lionáird

Steve Cooney has been described by the Irish Times as a ‘musical polymath’ and is best known for his development of an influential style of guitar accompaniment to traditional Irish dance music, for which he won the National Entertainment Award in 1997. He came to Ireland from Australia in 1980 and maintains his connections with the Aboriginal culture there, into which he was initiated. Seamus Heaney wrote at the Fiddler’s Green Festival in Rostrevor: ‘Master Cooney restores the ancient link between lyre and lyric, between poetry and performance, the rhapsody and rascality’. “Magnificently expressive.” The New York Times

Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, pianist and composer, presents an evening celebrating the music of Turlough O’Carolan. The concert features a new series of suites for solo piano edited from the eighteenth century Irish harp music of Turlough O’ Carolan (1670 – 1738). Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin brings a vital new energy and an informed historical perspective to this quintessentially Irish music. Clonmel born pianist and composer, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, is indelibly linked with the growth of interest in Irish traditional music in recent times and his interpretation of traditional music arranged for piano has been influential and popular. Zoë Conway effortlessly combines a background steeped in Ireland’s rich aural music tradition with a strong founding in classical music. She has toured worldwide and has appeared in many prestigious concert halls including Carnegie Hall, New York, The Kremlin Palace, Moscow and The National Concert Hall, Dublin. Together, Zoë Conway and John Mc Intyre have been described as “simply one of the best folk duos on the planet” (BBC), delighting audiences in Ireland and beyond.

The band members Conal Ó Gráda (flute), Benny McCarthy (accordion) & Dave Sheridan (fiddle), all long recognised as among the top instrumentalists in Ireland, Nell Ní Chróinín (sean nós singer, commonly acknowledged as the most exciting traditional singing talent of her generation) and Colm Murphy (bodhrán, widely recognised as one of the top Traditional music percussionists of all time).

With a refreshingly uncluttered approach to playing, Raw Bar Collective present a vibrant and excitingly earthy style of Irish Traditional music. Raw Bar Collective is a rare gathering of Irish musicians, each of them an acknowledged standard bearer within the tradition.

Built between 1890 and 1896, St. George’s Market is one of Belfast’s oldest attractions. It has been selected for numerous local and national titles and awards for its fresh, local produce and great atmosphere. It holds a weekly Friday Variety Market, the City Food & Craft Market on Saturdays and the Sunday Market. Féile An Droichead will present some of our best music talents on Friday & Saturday of our festival.

Enjoy a local beer, cider, whiskey or Guinness while learning about the instruments, language, customs and history that make up Ireland’s vibrant musical tradition. Join us on this interactive experience and discover why Belfast is considered one of Ireland’s best cities for Traditional Irish Music.
