paraSITE

Collaboration - Kerry Northwood, Alex Vlasity The purpose of this project was to explore and develop a designed parasite to the architecture building at Cal Poly. Through analysis and study of both the specific physical context of our site - Site 58 - and the less tangible aspects of context, we were charged with designing an additive element that spoke to and from the building in some way. We focused on developing our design language as well as our skills in the shop. Working within real deadlines and real budgets, my team developed our response to the architecture building. We found ourselves drawn to the inescapable presence of sound at our specific site as well as the verticality emphasized throughout the building as a larger site.

slipCASE

The purpose of this project was to discover how site and context are both important elements to any design solution. Through analysis and excavation of a book in as a site in LITERARY INTERVENTIONS, we were meant to develop an understanding of the language a site speaks. Through translating this language into the exterior in CONJOIN, we learned to develop design within a language. Through the final step of GRIP+SLIP, we expanded our context to that of the work tables we love so dearly in our studios. Here we explored how the language can translate into and onto a specific site exterior to the excavated book itself. The entire process built upon previous steps, with emphasis on the importance of analysis and synthesis, craft and precision, and developing a leading idea or purpose. I focused on simple detail, and found that the combination of details created a refined language of void and texture.

Collaboration - Paris Allen, Emre Keskintepe, Joseph Stearns In this project, my group investigated the concept of “dwelling” and how site and material effect the passive experience and active process of dwelling. We were fortunate enough to have materials from a hot air balloon donated to us. We explored the idea of aperture openings and often thought of our structure as “a portal to the earth, a portal to the sky.” We sought to create a comfortable, communal space to enjoy both during the day and during the night - a successful endeavor, as both professors and other students enjoyed inhabiting the space.

guadalupe dunes center

Home to a wealth of flora, fauna, and culture, the Guadalupe Dunes claim an important part of both California’s coast and it’s cultural history. Spanning 500 acres, the Guadalupe Dunes are in a constant state of change. The Dunes Center seeks to educate the public about not only the science behind the formation of the dunes and the rich variety of plants and animals that call it home, but also the Dunes’ role in shaping California’s cultural and cinematic histories. `

The form of the Center is derived from two important features of the dune. The plan was influenced by the growth pattern of the saltbush, an indigenous plant which helps stabilize the dune with its expansive network of roots. The plan is a resultant of both visibly interlocked relationships – such as the ones seen on the dunes – and implied connection through linear relationship – such as the saltbush’s root system, hidden beneath the shifting sands. The second and most characteristic feature of the dunes is that of the impermanence of its shape. The Center sits elevated above the dunes, so as to allow the sand to advance and recede uninterrupted. This strategy allows dunes on the site 1to restore themselves and for the public to view this restoration from an alternative vantage point. The three galleries offer a directional view towards the southwest to allow a visible and experiential connection between the exhibits and the landscape.

The goal of this interpretation of the new San Luis Obispo Mission Museum is to provide the community with a facility that will house the expanding Mission Museum, but also emphasize the state of “in between.” This project aims to activate a new center of circulation within downtown’s historic district through highlighting moments of travel on both large and small scale.

The site is located near the historic San Luis Obispo Museum and the original Adobe Murray, The project aims to tear down and replace the existing public bathroom. The site’s context is saturated with trees and greenery, which sustains a relaxed and transitional atmosphere.
