Tips for parents / carers to help their child with the transition from Pre-school to school: -

Mentally prepare your child by talking about their new school, new teacher, the name of their new class and the differences in routine of their new school.

-

Talk about new and exciting activities that they will do in school such as

-

PE and music lessons, as well as talk about making new friends.

-

Talk about the different feelings they may experience such as scared, nervous, excited, happy and sad. And explain that other children will feel the same as them. Also talk about your school experiences as well.

-

Attend any open days the school maybe offering.

-

Involve your child for practical preparations such as writing a shopping list and going shopping for new uniforms, shoes, lunch box and accessories.

-

Make sure that your child is in bed at an acceptable time and is up with enough time to have a decent breakfast. It is vital that they have a good routine and breakfast so they can maintain concentration in school.

-

Try to be there early on their first day so that you have enough time to show your child around, give them time to settle down and try not to get emotional in front of them. It may make them uneasy and worried if they can see you are upset.
