October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month - the perfect reason to reach out to the women, and men, too, and remind you to take care of yourselves, and not just those around you. Getting to Know‌

Elyssa Everling, Librarian Assistant @ CPB If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be? I feel too young to pick an age to stay forever. However, if I had to pick an age that I have been, it would be 26 because it was a pretty awesome year for me. I got a lot accomplished, met some really great people, and had a lot of fun. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I would really like to learn to play piano. I regret not caring more about learning an instrument when I was younger. If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be? I would really like to get a garden going. I would love to be able to grow more of my own food. I would love to have a variety of vegetables and a little strawberry patch. If you were reincarnated as an animal, what would it be? I would want to come back as a cat. I look at Siobhan, my cat, and she pretty much has it made, she doesn't have to worry about food, doesn't have to go outside when it's cold (or ever, really), and has a bed to sleep in. That seems like a great life to me. When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time? When I have 30 minutes of free time I'm usually wondering what if there is something I have forgotten to do. But, when I do actually have time off, I like to take my dog, Pearl, for a walk. If you could have dinner with only three people (real or fictitious/from any time period/dead or alive), which three people would you choose and why? If I could have dinner with anyone, I would choose Kurt Vonnegut, Margaret Atwood, and Nadia Bolz-Weber. They are all individuals who really live life in their own way and aren't afraid to question that status quo. I would be interested on hearing more about their thoughts on what it means to be human. What is your idea of fun? If given a chance to skip work for a day, how would you spend the entire day? I would make myself a big breakfast, a tofu scramble with lots of veggies, toast, coffee, and fruit. I would actually take the time to enjoy it. I would then do some reading or maybe catch up on my favorite shows, since I don't really have time to do that. I would take an afternoon nap and then head down to Bloomington to have dinner with friends. If you were stranded on a beach alone, what are five things that you would want to have with you? If I were stranded on a beach, I would definitely want sunscreen, a bag full of books I've been wanting to read, my phone so I could listen to my favorite podcasts, a comfy chair, and an endless supply of water to drink. What was your favorite musical group in middle school? I was really into Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez in middle school. I never really listened to any of the popular bands. Name one thing you miss about being a kid. I miss how slow time seemed to go. Everyone told me how fast time would go once I got older and they were totally right. Especially working here where I'm always thinking three weeks ahead, time just flies by. Do you have any phobias? I do not like clowns or anyone in costume, especially when I can't see their face. I also don't like haunted houses/trails, even the Children's Museum's haunted house is too scary for me. What types of food do you NOT eat? I don't eat anything that had a face or a mother, or came from something that did, so no meat, cheese, dairy, eggs, or honey. I also don't do mushrooms, eggplants, fennel, or Indian food.

Getting to Know…

Andrea Kaucher, Children’s Librarian @ FRB If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be? I don’t think that I would choose to stay a certain age forever. Life is a learning and growing experience, and there’s beauty in all of it. That’s my philosophical answer for this questionnaire. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I would love to learn how to figure skate. I grew up in the era of Kristi Yamaguchi, and then I was a total fangirl for Michelle Kwan. I still can’t believe she didn’t get the gold in Nagano. If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be? I would love to have a new house to get settled into. Send good house hunting vibes my way, please! If you were reincarnated as an animal, what would it be? I think it would be fun to be an otter. They seem to be pretty smart and playful. However, I just discovered that they’re part of the weasel family, so maybe not. When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time? I have an eight-month-old son, so I’m either playing with him or trying to catch a nap. If you could have dinner with only three people (real or fictitious/from any time period/dead or alive), which three people would you choose and why? There are too many possible answers for this question. So I'll say I'd just be happy to have dinner with my best friend because I've only seen her once since I moved here last September. This dinner would feature creme brulee, sparkly confetti, and lots of laughter. What is your idea of fun? If given a chance to skip work for a day, how would you spend the entire day? These days I would go on an adventure with my husband and son. Maybe a picnic and a hike or a trip to the children's museum. It's all about the baby! If you were stranded on a beach alone, what are five things that you would want to have with you? I am going to start with the assumptions that there are plenty of shady trees and a hammock on this beach, along with a source for fresh potable water. Then, all I would need is sunscreen, my swimsuit, a cooler of dry ice filled with ice cream, a Kindle Paperwhite loaded with ebooks, and a satellite phone because I plan on being stranded only for an afternoon. What was your favorite musical group in middle school? I was really more of a reader than a music listener. Name one thing you miss about being a kid. Having summers off! When it gets warm and sunny, I want to be outside all the time. Do you have any phobias? I don't like large crowds, and I don't like it when people I don't know get too close to me. What types of food do you NOT eat? Fish/shellfish, corn, peas, peanuts, strawberries, bananas, and melons--because allergies. Other than those things, I can't be too picky. But I do also avoid raw tomato (too squishy) and mandarin oranges (remind me of eating a goldfish).

Seven Easy Health Tips for the Unmotivated!

Eating right, exercising, dealing with stress – it’s all a lot of work, right? Well, it doesn’t have to be! Here are some simple tips culled from various internet sources, which require little work, but will help you make healthier choices. 1. Stock up on frozen veggies and berries to have on hand when you might need them. It’s easy to grab a handful of frozen berries for a quick snack or to toss into oatmeal. Frozen veggies actually have lots of nutrients and are easy to microwave as a side dish, or add to soup or a stir fry. 2. Eat from small plates, bowls, and cups to help manage your portion sizes. Some research suggests that you’ll eat less when you put your food on smaller plates, thus keeping portions more healthful. Serving a small portion on a big plate makes you feel like you are depriving yourself, while having the same portion size on a smaller plate tricks you into thinking you’re eating a bigger amount. 3. Prepare a week’s worth of grab-and-go snacks on Sundays so you always have something healthy to nibble. Snacking on healthy things throughout the day will keep your energy up and will keep you from overeating at your meals. Check out the poster in your SWAT Area in your branch for suggestions on healthy 100 calorie snacks.

4. Prep all your workout gear the night before, so it’s all ready for you when you wake up. When you don’t have to take the time to dig through your closet for your gym shorts or pick out just the right t-shirt, getting up and at ‘em gets a lot easier. 5. Go ahead and sleep in your workout outfit, if you have to have to. If changing clothes first thing in the morning provides an obstacle to early morning workouts, go ahead and roll right from the bed to the treadmill. 6. Drink a cup of black coffee before you work out to help you burn more fat. Reports indicate that the caffeine in coffee can free up your fat cells for your body to use as an energy source. And it’ll also give you a jumpstart, which may get you more fired up about your workout! 7. Get a hold of a season (or a series) of a very addictive TV show and force yourself to watch it ONLY while you’re running on the treadmill, using the elliptical, or pedaling a stationary bike. Get the DVDs from the library to use at home, or take your ipad and some headphones to the gym and watch content you’ve gotten from Hoopla while you work out! So, you can see there are ways to make being healthy easier! I’m sure you can think of even more easy health tips. The key, as a popular athletic shoe company says, is “just do it!” ~Linda Kilbert

Five Reads for Banned Book Week Banned Books Week has already passed us by, but here are a few books to put on your to-read list for next year. 1. Saga Saga was one of 2014’s most challenged books…which may be understandable. This graphic novel has enough sex, language, and violence to make Game of Thrones seem kid-friendly. Written by Brian K. Vaughan, author of Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina, this series follows Alana and Marko, former members of warring armies, as they raise their daughter Hazel while adventuring across the galaxy. Action, adventure, and moral ambiguity abound. 2. The Chocolate War Jerry Renault won’t sell the chocolates. Rejecting a school fundraiser sounds like a mundane start to a story, but this simple rebellion will lead to a dark and horrifying battle with Trinity’s faculty and the school's local gang, The Vigils. Robert Cormier’s harrowing young adult novel explores the abuse of power, mob mentality, and the consequences of daring to disturbing the universe. 3. Persepolis Persepolis is a graphic novel memoir from Marjane Satrapi, detailing the author’s childhood growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution in the 80s. The book gives an interesting look into a culture coming under sway of religious fundamentalism. The author's perspective gives a unique insider's view of these events. 4. Grendel Most of us had to read Beowulf in middle-school…but have you ever wondered what the story sounds like from the monster’s perspective? In this postmodern novel from John Gardner, we discover Grendel’s philosophical musings intertwined with homicidal rages. Experimental, thoughtful, and imbued with a savage wit, this book makes for an intriguing and unconventional read. 5. Where's Waldo? Where is Waldo? Where did he come from? Where is he going? These questions have haunted humanity since the dawn of time, and Martin Handford’s comprehensive study is still the primary authority on the subject. However, some commentators have taken issue with some of the depictions of mischief appearing in the book's chaotic double-page illustration spreads, enough so that the book landed in the top 100 most challenged books of the 1990s. ~Nathan Biberdorf
