Time Well Spent PREDIABETES AND DIABETES

You Can Help Prevent and Manage

Did you know prediabetes can become type 2 diabetes? It's true; however, healthy lifestyle changes such as eating nutritious foods, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight can help your employees bring their blood sugar level back to normal and avoid getting type 2 diabetes. Healthier lifestyle habits also can help those who have developed diabetes live a more normal life. Because November is National Diabetes Month, Anthem has gathered wonderful information for you on Time Well Spent at http://timewellspent.anthem.com.

Look for “Time Well Spent” in each issue of the Library Scoop and learn more about building a healthier, more productive lifestyle.

Have you been asked "Do you notarize?" Well, now you can say "yes!" HR Manager Amber has recently been certified by the state and can offer notary services on behalf of JCPL free of charge. If you have a request, please forward Amber's contact information to the patron and they can contact her and set up a time.

Extra thanks to Keeley for leading the ALC’s Vocabulary Group on October 27 so Wendy could meet with new learners at another branch. - Wendy Preilis I just wanted to send a little note of thanks to Kalen Jones. When we were short-handed with illness in October, Kalen kept the Children’ Department running smoothly. She presented 11 programs in one week. Thank you, Kalen, for handling a very busy week with a great attitude! - Sarah Taylor A huge thanks to the Professional Development Committee members. The day could not have happened without all your ideas and hard work!

Getting to Know…

Bobbi Whittemore, Administrative Assistant @ LSC If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be? I’m an “in the moment” kind of girl. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I would like to apprentice with a master cinema photographer, Seamus McGarvey and Stuart Dryburgh in particular.

Bobbi Whittemore, Administrative Asst.

If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be? My muse has been quietly but persistently poking my lately. I will spend quiet time this year listening to what that is all about. I suspect it’s photography related. If you were reincarnated as an animal, what would it be? A horse or an otter. They are both amazingly fabulous. Grounded and free spirited at the same time.

pageafterpage.org

When you haveFRB 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time? Watching a movie. My TV is a “movie screen.” DVDs are my TV. I watch one a day, or more - especially during the film submission process with Heartland Film Festival. If you could have dinner with only three people (real or fictitious/from any time period/dead or alive), which three people would you choose and why? There have always been five guests on my invitation list: Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini, Irish philosopher and poet John O'Donohue, Steven Spielberg, Thomas Jefferson and British comedian Eddie Izzard. I've always wanted to invite them over for dinner and a movie. What a dynamic, intriguing, inspiring evening! What is your idea of fun? If given a chance to skip work for a day, how would you spend the entire day? Sleep in. Go for a long walk in the woods with a friend. Lunch with friends and family. Photo outing. Supper and a movie with friends. If I had a transporter (my son is working on that one)...I'd spend the day in Ireland! If you were stranded on a beach alone, what are five things that you would want to have with you? Not something I'd attract into my life by thinking about it too much. If I found myself stranded, it would become a creative reaction moment with what was at hand. Since I received a rescue confirmation before the ship went down, I would gather survival bits like a good first class Girl Scout until the rescuers arrived. Then, I would happily pass the time swimming whenever I'd like, listening to the waves 24/7 and soaking up sunshine. Double Pisces love water. What was your favorite musical group in middle school? Middle School? What's that? Elton John! Also, several of the bands recording out at our house. My home was a recording studio in the 1970s and 80s; 700 West Recording. Unfortunately/fortunately, my room was right above the studio, my bed above the drum kits. I can sleep through anything, and I now understand my compelling need to listen to live music before I go to bed at night. Name one thing you miss about being a kid. Wandering all over our agricultural/wooded neighborhood by horseback with friends morning till dark. "I'm late? But Mom...my watch broke. How was I supposed to know it was after 9 p.m.?" Do you have any phobias? Underwater caves. Sitting in the passenger seat, or whichever seat is on the side where the cliff drops off, while driving through mountain passes with no guardrails. What types of food do you NOT eat? I am adventuresome and like all kinds of food. Liver, Brussels sprouts, asparagus and hot-spicy foods are yucky!

Getting to Know‌ Lisa Lintner, Director

If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be? I don't think I'd want to stay a specific age forever, unless my husband could do so too. Then maybe my age now. And then I could be director of JCPL FOREVER......just kidding.

Lisa Lintner, Director

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Be fluent in all languages of the world. That or maybe learn aerial martial arts (like in the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be? Definitely finding a house in Johnson County and moving in!!

pageafterpage.org

If you were reincarnated as an animal, what would it be? Maybe a dolphin. I feel at home in the ocean. Dolphins do amazing flips and twists -- just for the fun of it. They are also a bit sassy in a cute way. When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time? I'll go online and research places to travel to or read a book. If you could have dinner with only three people (real or fictitious/from any time period/dead or alive), which three people would you choose and why? I'd host a tea party with Jane Austen, because I adore her books and she's become such an icon for romance today; Juliette Binoche, because she's my favorite actress; and my mom, because I miss her and she would be hoot with those two other ladies at the table. What is your idea of fun? If given a chance to skip work for a day, how would you spend the entire day? A perfectly fun day for me: out to breakfast, all morning antiquing, out to lunch, all afternoon at the movies, popcorn for supper, at the movies until 9 p.m., go home, read for a couple of hours, bed. If you were stranded on a beach alone, what are five things that you would want to have with you? 1. My husband 2. One suitcase full of my favorite 25 books 3. A working lighter so I could make a fire to read by at night 4. A huge canopy to escape from the sun 5. Vitamin C, to prevent scurvy. What was your favorite musical group in middle school? Duran Duran Name one thing you miss about being a kid. Eating a 25 cent supercone from McDonald's on a Sunday afternoon while my dad drove around the countryside. Do you have any phobias? Clowns, ice-cream truck drivers, falling down marble stairs in high-heeled shoes. What types of food do you NOT eat? Creamed corn, bourbon-infused dishes/candy, blue ketchup (when that was a fad), raw oysters.

An Attitude of Gratitude Thanksgiving is a time of being thankful for the many good things in our lives. But what if we extended that mindset to the rest of the year? Researchers say we our health will benefit. According to University of California Davis psychology professor Robert Emmons, grateful people -- those who treat gratitude as a regular practice rather than a temporary state of mind -- have an edge on the not-so-grateful when it comes to health. "Grateful people take better care of themselves and engage in more protective health behaviors like regular exercise, a healthy diet, regular physical examinations," Emmons states. The health benefits of a grateful mindset include a better ability to manage stress and enabling a sense of optimism which leads to better immune response. So, how do you cultivate an attitude of gratitude? Dr. Emmons provides these suggestions: • Maintain a gratitude journal – writing can help you remember what you are thankful for in times of stress or loss, and give you a more optimistic outlook

• Be mindful of what you have - create a list of positives in your life and review them regularly to prevent the tendency to take them for granted • Reframe situations as positive – how you perceive a situation can color your response. The next time you find yourself complaining about life’s hassles, see if you can mentally “flip the switch” to see the positives. • Change your self-talk – make sure you inner dialog is positive and not self-deprecating. Rather than stew about a situation, try reflecting on things for which you're grateful. • Express appreciation – sharing words of gratitude and affirmation cannot only brighten the day of the one who receives it, but it will lift your spirits as well. Next time you are in a store or restaurant, share a smile and a genuine compliment with a clerk or waitress. Make it your aim to celebrate Thanksgiving all year-round! ~Linda Kilbert

You Don't Have to Choose Between Book Club and Happy Hour! by Erin Cataldi

Keeley Payne and I (the two most wonderful employees in the library system) have been pushing to get out in the community and into the breweries for some time. When we were given the green light we took our ideas and ran with it. Modeling Stout Stories after other successful library systems (Books & Brews, Books on Tap, Reading Between the Wines, etc.), we researched how to start forming partnerships with local businesses and how to reach potential new patrons. The idea behind this book club is to help get some people in their twenties and thirties who may not have been in the library since they were children, involved in the library again. And nothing entices people more than a pint of beer! Stout Stories aims to "reinvent the book club" with promises of great food, drinks, comfortable atmosphere, and great discussion on today's most intriguing books. Whether you're a milleni-"ale" or an older "vintage," come out and meet like-minded individuals. We're putting the "pub" in public library! And we'd love to see some off the clock employees there as well (that is, those of you that are 21 and up)! Be sure to register on evanced.

Canada, eh? by Erin Cataldi I traveled to Vancouver, Canada to present at the International Conference on Books, Publishing and Libraries. My colleague, Heather Howard (Trine University Library) and I presented on library event planning and the Indianapolis Literary Pub Crawl. They were only two of three librarians from the great state of Indiana (Indiana Wesleyan was also represented). There were 15 countries in attendance and everyone had fascinating topics to present on. I attended discussions on: literary tourism, libraries as hybrid buildings, medieval illuminated manuscripts, presidential libraries, supporting recreational book reading in adolescents, among others. I also got to network with fascinating librarians from all over the globe. I spent one delightful evening at a pub with librarians from Iceland, the UK, Australia, and Germany and spent the better part of an hour debating on what the best young adult book was (everyone eventually agreed on The “Harry Potter” series and “A Monster Calls” by Patrick Ness). All in all it was a great experience and Heather and I are working on getting our paper published and reviewed shortly. Yay for global librarianship!

Our schedule is as follows: •Monday, Dec. 7 - 6:30–8 p.m. “A Christmas Story” by Jean Shepherd Taxman Brewery in Bargersville •Monday, Jan. 4 - 6:30–8 p.m. “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee Mallow Run Winery in Bargersville •Monday, Feb. 1 - 6:30–8 p.m. “Big Little Lies” by Liane Moriarity Scotty's Brew Pub in Franklin
