Libraries Transform It’s an exciting year to live in the state of Indiana as we celebrate our 200th birthday! You can celebrate Indiana’s Bicentennial at Johnson County Public Library. Learn about Indiana at our programs and join us for the Bicentennial Celebration! JCPL kicked off this year with Winter Reading in February. This year’s theme was “Incredible Indiana” and featured lots of Hoosier related programs. Several of our craft night programs had an Indiana theme. In June, the Franklin Community Band hosted a special BicenTUNEial concert on the lawn at the Franklin Branch and in July, the Franklin Branch hosted a very special storytelling event. Professional storyteller, Sally Perkins, told a story about the life of John Dillinger. Flip to the Local Connections page in this guide to see our upcoming Bicentennial programs. Hear from a published author, find a volunteer opportunity or learn about Indiana history. We are also celebrating Indiana’s birthday by participating in Johnson County’s Bicentennial Celebration on Friday, Sept. 23. The libraries of Johnson County will be providing activities for the whole family. Downtown Franklin is one of the stops along the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay trail. The flame will be carried by selected torchbearers and will travel throughout all 92 Indiana counties! Visit pageafterpage.org to discover everything we have in store for Indiana’s Bicentennial year. Happy Birthday, Indiana!

Since 1911, Johnson County Public Library has worked toward improving the quality of life for all citizens of Johnson County, Indiana. For more than one hundred years JCPL has provided you with courteous, knowledgeable and efficient service, and access to a broad diversity of information through resources and programs. Today we offer four branches, a Library Services Center and a virtual branch. From book clubs and family fun days, to canning classes and storytime, your library has a full schedule of engaging programs year-round.

Programs At-a-Glance

There are some amazing benefits to carrying your library card with you this fall! In September, the three library districts in Johnson County are teaming up for the Play Your Card Right program. So, dig out that card from your wallet or keychain – and get ready to be appreciated during Library Card Sign-Up Month. Library cardholders from the Johnson County Public Library, the Greenwood Public Library and the Edinburgh Wright-Hageman Public Library will be receiving some wonderful benefits for displaying their library card at several Johnson County businesses during the month of September. See inside for more details. Among the benefits you’ll receive from showing your card at your favorite neighborhood business, your Johnson County Public Library card has benefits that you can celebrate all year long: • • • • •

Books and Fun – there are more than half a million items to check out at the library or download to your device. Digital Resources - full-text magazine articles, educational courses, genealogy research, legal forms, business research, authoritative medical information, and practice tests and exams. Internet & Printing – access our newly upgraded Wi-Fi with your own device, or log in to one of over 70 public use computers. Is your printer out of ink at home? You can send print jobs to JCPL now. Meeting Rooms – library cardholders can book our community rooms for nonprofit community use and for business or personal use. See inside the guide for more details. Innovative Programs – reserve your spot at one of our educational programs. We are celebrating International Literacy in September, Booktoberfest and Halloween in October and Native American Heritage Month in November –just to name a few of our library program series!

Don’t have a library card? It’s easy to get one! If you live within the Johnson County Public Library district, visit one of our four locations. Residents receive a library card at no cost. If you live in Greenwood or Edinburgh library districts, don’t despair! You can still qualify for a free JCPL library card. Call or visit one of our locations for more details. See you at the library!

StoryWalk Celebration StoryWalk Grand Opening Celebration

All Ages Date to be Announced Independence Park on 2100 S. Morgantown Road, Greenwood Visit pageafterpage.org for announcements of our Grand Opening Celebration. Johnson County Public Library and Johnson County Parks and Recreation are partnering to install a new StoryWalk at Independence Park, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Greenwood/White River.

Visit Franklin’s StoryWalk Take a stroll on over to Franklin’s Urban Forest and you’ll see some neat new signs along the path. Take a closer look and you’ll see these signs hold the pages of a story. Johnson County Public Library and Franklin Parks and Recreation celebrated Franklin’s first StoryWalk with a great big grand opening this summer. Families read the first book “Duck on a Bike” by David Shannon. Other activities included a petting zoo, a farm craft, bounce houses, sitting inside a fire truck or police car and, of course, learning about the library. Visit the Franklin StoryWalk this fall with your family and friends! Enjoy your stroll as you read the next book “Number One Sam” by Greg Pizzoli, August-September and “Creepy Carrots” by Aaron Reynolds, OctoberNovember. Want to explore more walking paths? Check out the new walking path around the prairie at the Trafalgar Branch. And, be on the lookout for another StoryWalk coming to Independence Park in Greenwood! The Franklin StoryWalk is brought to you by: Johnson County Public Library, Franklin Parks & Recreation and The Glick Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation. Through the Indiana Authors Award, The Glick Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation, is proud to support libraries and authors from across Indiana. In 2011, Micah Ling won the Eugene & Marilyn Indiana Authors Award for Emerging Author. Grant money awarded from this honor funds Franklin’s StoryWalk. The Urban Forest is located just a few blocks from the Franklin Branch on South Street in Franklin.

The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg Hubbard Library. StoryWalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.
