Mamba Trail Runners to Host 100-Miler this Fall

Lace up your shoes this fall for Memphis’ first-ever 100-miler race hosted by Mamba Trail Runners, the newest hype group to join the fitness community.

Created by James Boler, Mamba Trail Runners is a Memphis-based running support group that gets runners excited for upcoming races while sharing and celebrating participant triumphs.

The group, named after the fast-moving Mamba snake, can be distinguished by their cool-toned silver and green logo featuring trees and trails.

“I run the trails at Shelby Farms all the time, and I knew Memphis needed a 100-mile race,” James comments on the many local runners who travel hours to run the nearest 100 milers in neighboring states.

On November 3 at 7:00 a.m., the Mamba 100-mile race will circle the Wolf River Trails 14.3 loop starting at Germantown Parkway. November 4, shorter 100k, 50k, and 25k race options will be held.

Currently, the race has accumulated over 130 runners from 20 states, including New Mexico, Minnesota, Michigan, Florida, and North Carolina, and expects at least 200 runners on race day.

“As race director, I want to know my runners by name and their backgrounds before they run the race. We have numerous first-time 100-milers running the Mamba 100-miler.”

James has completed four 100-milers and is training for the Cowboy 200 in three months.

“I created the group and race to unite runners of all backgrounds and locations. Memphis is beautiful, the trails here are amazing, and I want to bring people in from other states to show them how beautiful our city and parks are.”

Thinking ahead, James is already working on developing new races for 2024.

To join their 400+ member nationwide, private Facebook group, search Mamba Trail Runners.

The group regularly provides insight and information, serving as a communal event board.

James likes to share bios and photos of each new runner who joins the group, so they can feel welcome and empowered by the other runners.

While Mamba’s first race is based in Memphis, James hopes to eventually create races in other parts of the country.

All registered runners are entered into a cash giveaway totaling $1,500, distributed among five lucky winners in the amounts of $700, $400, $200, $100, and $100, with other surprise raffle drawings to be announced.

Chicago-based, professional ultra running photographer Jenny Thorsen, whose photos have been featured in several magazines, will be in attendance to capture your best running moments.

OPA! Avoid Getting “Pickled” This Summer

Pickleball is a unique and fastgrowing sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. The paddle sport is not only enjoyable but also offers numerous health benefits. However, like any physical activity, pickleball has its own potential health risks. Here we'll review the advantages and potential hazards associated with pickleball.

BENEFITS OF PICKLEBALL

Cardiovascular Fitness:

Pickleball involves continuous movement, which promotes cardiovascular health. The combination of running, swinging the paddle, and quick reflexes help increase heart rate, improve circulation, and strengthen the cardiovascular system.

Weight Management:

Engaging in pickleball regularly can assist with weight management or weight loss goals. The sport's dynamic nature, which involves bursts of activity, burns calories and contributes to overall energy expenditure. Playing pickleball for just one hour can burn 400-600 calories, depending on intensity.

Increased Strength and Endurance:

The nature of pickleball requires players to use various muscle groups, including the legs, arms, core, and back. Constant movement and paddle swings improve muscular strength and endurance, leading to toned muscles and improved overall physical fitness.

Enhanced Coordination and Balance:

Pickleball involves precise hand-eye coordination and quick reflexes, which help to enhance motor skills, and the lateral movements and rapid changes in direction contribute to improved balance and agility.

Social Interaction:

Playing with friends, family, or joining local pickleball communities can provide a sense of belonging, reduce stress, and improve mental well-being while having fun!

HEALTH RISKS OF PICKLEBALL

Overuse Injuries:

Players are prone to overuse injuries due to the repetitive nature of pickleball movements, such as swinging the paddle. Common overuse injuries include tennis elbow (epicondylitis), shoulder impingement, and knee or ankle strains. Warm up properly, use appropriate equipment, and practice correct techniques to minimize the risk of these injuries.

LIVING WELL
12

Falls and Trips:

As a fast-paced sport, players may encounter falls or trips, particularly when moving quickly or changing direction abruptly. These incidents can lead to sprained ankles, fractures, or other injuries. Wearing supportive footwear and being cautious on the court can help prevent such accidents.

Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion:

Pickleball is often played outdoors, and the combined physical exertion and warm weather can increase the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses. It's vital to stay properly hydrated, take breaks, wear suitable clothing, and play during cooler times of the day to mitigate these risks.

Eye Injuries:

The fast-paced nature can lead to accidental paddle contact with the eye. While this risk is low, protective eyewear is recommended, especially for more competitive play, to safeguard against potential eye injuries.

WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION

While generally a safe and enjoyable sport, there are instances when it is essential to seek medical attention. Consult a healthcare professional if you experience any of the following symptoms or conditions.

Acute or Severe Injuries:

If your injury appears minor, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) may help with recovery. If you sustain a severe injury during pickleball, such as a fracture, dislocation, or severe sprain, seek immediate medical attention. These injuries may require specialized treatment, including immobilization, physical therapy, or, in some cases, surgery.

Persistent Pain:

If you have persistent or worsening pain in your joints, muscles, or any other part of your body which does not resolve with the RICE approach, get evaluated by a healthcare professional. This could indicate an underlying condition, such as tendinitis or a stress fracture, that requires medical intervention.

Chronic Conditions:

Individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart disease, respiratory problems, or musculoskeletal disorders, should consult their healthcare provider before engaging in pickleball or any physical activity. Your doctor can provide guidance on safety precautions and potential modifications to accommodate your condition.

Signs of Heat-Related Illness:

Prolonged exposure to heat and inadequate hydration can lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Seek medical attention if you experience dizziness, confusion, nausea or vomiting, rapid heartbeat, or excessive sweating.

Eye Injuries:

In the rare event of an eye injury, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention. Eye injuries should not be taken lightly, and a professional evaluation is necessary to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.

Remember, it is better to err on the side of caution regarding your health. If you have any concerns or uncertainties about an injury or your overall well-being after participating in pickleball, it is always recommended to consult a medical professional who can provide appropriate guidance and care.

Pickleball is a sport that offers numerous physical and social benefits, making it an appealing choice for people of all ages and fitness levels. By being aware of these risks and taking appropriate precautions, players can fully enjoy the benefits of pickleball while minimizing the likelihood of injury. Remember to warm up, wear proper equipment, stay hydrated, and play safely to make the most of this exciting and engaging sport.

Talk to your doctor about skin problems. You’ll look and feel better!

Summer is here, and that means shorts, T-shirts, and swimsuits, so everyone wants their skin to look its best. Feeling comfortable and confident starts with healthy skin!

As a primary care doctor, I assure you that your skin is important for more reasons than just how it looks. It’s your body’s first line of protection from germs and injury, and skin problems can also signal underlying health issues – so talk to your doctor about any skin concerns.

You may need to improve your diet.

Some skin woes are tied to nutrition.

For example, dehydration can result in dull, flaky, itchy skin and make wrinkles more noticeable. Dehydrated skin is weaker skin, making you more prone to sores and infections and making it harder for skin conditions to heal.

As a general guideline, divide your weight in pounds in half, and drink that many ounces of water per day. With exercise and sun exposure, you likely need even more water than that. However, some people with certain medical conditions cannot drink that much water, so talk to your doctor first.

If your body does not have enough iron, you may have pale, itchy skin from a lack of red blood cells or hemoglobin. Iron is found in foods like dark leafy green vegetables, meats, beans, and nuts. Your doctor can test your blood count and iron level if necessary.

Too much sugar and salt can damage collagen and elastin, which give skin its firmness and structure. They also can worsen inflammation and trigger breakouts like acne, rosacea, eczema, or psoriasis.

You could need treatment for a medical condition.

Your doctor may need to check you for certain illnesses, especially if you have other symptoms.

Infections and allergic reactions can cause skin changes and rashes. Your doctor can determine if antibiotics, antifungals, steroids, or antihistamines may help.

Sometimes skin lesions are cancerous or precancerous and need to be removed. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen to prevent skin cancer!

Celiac disease is a condition in which eating gluten causes the immune system to attack the intestines. In addition to gastrointestinal problems, this can cause a skin rash. People with celiac disease need a gluten-free diet.

Autoimmune diseases can also present with rashes. A facial rash on the cheeks and nose could be a sign of lupus. A deep purple rash on the legs could signal vasculitis. Joint/ muscle pain and dark urine can also be symptoms of autoimmune diseases.

Low thyroid can cause dry skin, brittle fingernails, and hair loss. Other potential symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, and slow heart rate.

These are just a few of the many medical conditions that can cause skin symptoms, so be sure to talk to your doctor!

You may need to work on stress and sleep habits.

Stress triggers inflammation and can cause your skin to make too much oil, which can aggravate rashes and other skin conditions. Stress can also cause collagen breakdown.

Sleep is when your skin generates new collagen and repairs itself. Sleepless nights can lead to skin sagging, wrinkles, poor skin healing, and the release of even more stress hormones.

Many people struggle with sleep and stress management problems. Simple changes to your daily habits are usually enough, but sometimes these problems require the ongoing guidance of a team of doctors, including mental health professionals and sleep specialists.

My holy grail product:

The ZO brightening serum. I had issues with hyperpigmentation and sunspots, and this product fades them and keeps my skin luminous!

My favorite skincare brand:

ZO because it’s done wonders for my skin!

Skincare routine essentials:

Everyone needs good sunscreen, a gentle cleanser, Vitamin C, retinol, peptide, and eye cream.

My best-kept beauty secret: Liquid collagen and drinking lots of water.

18

Most common skincare mistakes:

Not being consistent with your skincare routine, sleeping with makeup on, and not wearing sunscreen 24/7.

Biggest skincare myth:

You don’t need sunscreen inside or when it's cloudy outside – hello, windows and blue light!

My favorite skincare procedure:

Lumecca and microneedling combo. It makes the skin glow!

When to start using anti-aging products:

The earlier, the better, and in your teens, if possible. Prevention is your best line of defense!

My skincare routine:

In the morning, I start with Obagi ZO cleanser, Vitamin C, Daily Power Defense Moisturizer, and Elta MD sunscreen. At night, I use Obagi ZO cleanser, 1.0 retinol, Bright Alive, and ZO Hydrating Cream. If my skin is extra dry, I’ll add Growth Factor Serum.

My best piece of skincare advice:

Always wear sunscreen and pay for high-end skincare. It's worth it!

One skincare procedure to avoid:

Going to the tanning bed. It’s so bad for your skin!

My 2024 skin trend prediction:

QEEG Neurofeedback is one of the most powerful and safe tools and is proven to last years after treatment.

Skincare routine essentials:

I believe everyone should have a good, medical-grade antioxidant and SPF in the morning and retinol or some chemical exfoliant in the evening. We want to protect during the day and encourage skin cell turnover at night while resting.

Anti-aging products and procedures:

It's never too early to care for your skin! I encourage all my clients to have their kids as young as 10 on a good cleansing regimen and use sunscreen. In our twenties, we start to lose collagen, so that's a good time to step your game up regarding anti-aging products and preventative treatments.

Sam Colvin

Licensed Esthetician SkinBody Memphis

My holy grail skincare product:

I cannot live without SkinBetter AlphaRet Overnight Cream. It rejuvenates my skin while I sleep. I've seen a definite improvement in the tone and texture of my skin from this product. I use it every single night. Absolutely addicted!

Biggest skincare myth:

Sometimes people think that one product, one facial, or one laser treatment will fix twenty to thirty years of sun damage or neglect. No one product or treatment is going to be a magic wand. Having healthy, radiant skin is usually a process and a commitment.

Also, not all skincare products are created equally. The serums and creams at the drugstore and from multi-level marketing companies are not formulated in the same way medical grade skincare is. You may see some of the same ingredients on the bottle at the drugstore, but medical-grade skincare products contain higher concentrations of active ingredients, which makes a difference.

My best skincare advice:

Sunscreen! Every. Single. Day. Even in the winter, even if you have dark skin, and even if you "aren't outside for that long.” Reapplying throughout the day is important, too.

ASK AN EXPERT
20

Skincare product I avoid:

I'm not too fond of makeup-removing wipes. They are abrasive and contain alcohol and other harmful chemicals that disrupt the PH balance of your skin.

New procedure I’m excited about:

I am so excited about a new laser we have called Aviclear. It's the first FDA-approved laser to treat mild to severe acne. It's a fast treatment with no downtime, and the before and after from clinical trials are impressive. Helping someone struggling with acne have clear skin is one of the most rewarding parts of my job, so I feel very fortunate to have this device in my tool belt.

Biggest skincare misconception:

To all my sun worshippers, there is NO SUCH THING AS A BASE OR HEALTHY TAN. With the rising numbers of skin cancers today, the misconception of sunscreen use is still an issue. I have patients and friends that believe “you will not get tan if sunscreen is applied.” Trust me. You will still get tan. The sunscreen protects your skin from UVB (burning) and UVA (aging) rays.

My best skincare advice:

Never sleep in your makeup! Sleeping in your makeup clogs your pores and prevents your skin from breathing. This also speeds up the aging process and causes breakouts. Even if you are too lazy to complete the rest of your evening skincare regimen, at least wash your face.

An Robinson

Licensed Medical Aesthetician McDonald Murrmann Center for Laser & Aesthetics

My favorite skincare brand:

Obagi Medical. Obagi is a medical-grade skincare line that addresses all signs of aging, including dark spots, lines and wrinkles, texture, acne, and can even help prevent possible precancerous cells from forming. It is the one line that I have seen the most transformation in everyone’s skin, starting as early as two to four weeks, including mine.

My POV on anti-aging products:

The best age to start anti-aging products and procedures is in your twenties. The very first signs of aging usually begin around the eyes. Starting with eye cream in your twenties can help prevent aging or slow the aging process around your eyes. This is also when your skin starts to lose water, which is where your hyaluronic acid comes in place.

Most common skincare mistakes:

One main common mistake is the assumption that in-office treatments alone, without proper at-home skincare, will help treat their concerns. At-home skincare will help maintain the results from in-office treatments. Other common skincare mistakes are improper use of skincare products, not washing your face twice a day or at all, and not using sunscreen daily or properly.

My 2024 skin trend prediction:

The beauty trends are already shifting to a more health, wellness, and holistic approach. What we put inside our body will also reflect the condition of our skin. I think we will see an increase in treating the whole person with regards to nutrition, hydration, hormones, and education, a 360 approach if you will, for healthy glowing skin and confidence that helps a person not only look great but FEEL great as well!

My best-kept beauty secret:

Colonics and probiotics! Keeping my gut healthy helps decrease acne breakouts and skin issues.

My favorite skincare brand:

I love Skinbetter! The eye serum, toner, and sunscreen are my favorites. The sunscreen doesn't leave a white cast on darker skin and softens the skin tone.

The foundation for any skincare routine:

Balancing facial wash, moisturizer, retinol, and sunscreen.

Sharonda Walton

ANP-BC and Owner of Royalty Wellness Spa

My holy grail skincare product:

Obagi Hydrate moisturizer. It is lightweight, not too oily, and adapts to all skin types.

One treatment you should never

DIY:

Cosmetic injectables, such as Botox and fillers. Those are medical treatments and should only be done by a licensed medical professional – not at home!

New skin treatment I’m excited about:

Morpheus8 RF microneedling gives the best results I've seen. It is great for helping with acne, shrinking pores, and evening out skin tone.

Most common skincare mistake:

Not giving a product ample time to work and using too many products simultaneously.

ASK AN EXPERT
24

One product that I think is overhyped:

Some of these face masks. Many are ineffective or have ingredients not helpful for certain skin types.

My biggest piece of skincare advice:

When trying a new skincare product, give it at least two

In the morning, I use Almaj Naturals foaming face wash, Skinbetter eye serum, Skinbetter toning serum, Obagi Hydrate moisturizer, Obagi Professionals-C Suncare, or Skinbetter Sunscreen. At night, I use

Dermalogica micro exfoliant (three nights per week), compounded cream that includes tretinoin, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C

That your diet and gut health don't affect your skin.

My 2024 skin trend prediction:

I think the "no makeup" trend will continue to grow. More and more people are starting to want healthy skin so they can glow with or without makeup!

ZO is one of the few skin care lines that uses therapeutic treatment protocols that are highly effective for all skin types, genders, and ages. ZO gives me confidence with its science-based technologies and unique delivery systems.

My ultimate skincare advice:

The most important advice I give to all of my patients is that “it's never too late to love your skin,” and that phrase goes so far beyond age. It can be people struggling with self-confidence or patients overwhelmed with life and feeling like they don't have time for their skin.

Products/treatments to avoid:

At-home lasers can be a little tricky. They're great if you have already been to a professional clinician for that specific laser treatment, but to buy the device and think you'll get in-office results is a misconception.

New products I’m excited about:

Plant-based exosomes are making their way into the skincare world. They're active, naturally-occurring secretory factors from plants: liposomes, peptides, and anti-stress factors. Exosomes are chemicalfree, water-based, and made in the USA. I wouldn't be surprised if major skin care companies started implementing exosomes in their product lines.

Biggest skincare mistake:

The misuse of Retin-As and Tretinoin. For the most part, I find that patients are not using their products correctly. They know to use these products, but they don't really know how, and that's because everyone's skin is different and needs to be touched and looked at by a professional. It's not something you should just Google and hope for the best.

My best-kept beauty secret:

Aestheticians are skincare's best-kept secrets. Love yourself and find an aesthetician that loves your skin just as much.

2024 skincare prediction:

Skincare dominates right now, but hair and skin go hand in hand. Hair and scalp health are on the rise - a large portion of patients consults are people with hair loss concerns. Hair and scalp health is one of the fastest-growing and most exciting fields in aesthetics. The industry has already evolved so much from hair transplants to injections and now even more painless procedures. From post-COVID hair loss to hormonal changes and imbalances caused by pregnancy or menopause, more and more people have experienced hair loss.

Favorite skincare brand:

Skinbetter Science. They are scientifically-backed products and use the most advanced technologies in skincare to produce beautiful and visible results!

My best-kept beauty secret:

Double cleanse. Not groundbreaking, but it makes a difference! Pre-cleanse with a gel or oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, then go back in with an active ingredient cleanser. The second cleanse is insurance for your first cleanse and can be your “treatment” cleanse. If you have acne, look for a second cleanse with salicylic acid for aging glycolic. For brightening, look for Vitamin C, etc.

Skincare essentials:

I always say people need three things in their routine: a retinol for anti-aging and promoting cellular turnover, a Vitamin C serum for antioxidants and free-radical protection/dryness, and an SPF for sun protection.

One skincare procedure you should never DIY:

Dermablading- just leave this to the pros! We’re using medical grade #10R scalpels, so we are fully educated and trained to safely treat the skin with this tool. Not only that, but we’re treating you with a full protocol, including cleansing, degreasing the skin's oils, using a blade glide, and treating post-dermablading with healing lipid serums, something you can’t get at home. Get a dermablade from a professional, and then you can see the difference and be the judge!

Most common skincare mistake:

Using Witch Hazel while not having oily or acne-prone skin. Witch Hazel was huge back in the day, and there weren't many other options for effective skincare. Many women used alcohol-based toners in their youth to prevent acne but continued using them until their older years and experienced extreme dryness. It goes back to using what you know, but that may not be what you need anymore. A good rule of thumb is to re-evaluate your skin and skincare over the years and remember to adjust accordingly!

My number one skincare advice:

Wash your face and always wear sunscreen – your future self will thank you!

My favorite skin procedure:

Hydrafacial! It’s perfect for anyone who has never had a facial or is used to advanced procedures. It’s customizable from the tips you use, lymphatic drainage, booster serums, LED therapy, percentage of the “peel,” or even add on a lip or eye perk. So never feel like you can’t boost your Hydrafacial experience!

My 2024 skin trends prediction:

I think we’ll see a rise in combination therapy! Combining modalities is the way of the future, and I can’t wait to see what we will be teaming up to treat skin in the coming years!

My go-to skincare advice:

Take care of your skin now! Don’t wait to see signs of aging or issues. Develop good skincare habits and routines now to help keep your skin healthy and youthful.

When to start skincare:

I would advise you to start a simple skincare routine in your teens to help develop an effective daily process. Good habits start early, and you can always add to your regimen as you age. Regarding preventative procedures, like chemical peels and lasers, it depends on your true skin care needs, which you can determine by making an appointment with an aesthetician for a skin evaluation.

New products I’m excited about:

Exosomes are really hot right now. We use EXOE Detox and Repair, an organic plant-based stem cell rejuvenation serum. It’s three times faster recovery and ten times the stimulation of collagen, elastin, and Hyaluronic Acid. It’s even made locally here in Cordova, TN, and is a great add-on for any skin care rejuvenation procedure (especially microneedling and RF lasers) to promote little to no downtime.

A Beautiful You Medical Spa

My holy grail skincare product:

I cocktail two products: Glymed’s Ultra Hydro Gel and their CBD-B3 Age Delay serum. This blend has super strength, wrinkle-fighting Dipeptide and Tripeptide complex to curb dry, fatigued, and aging skin, and helps preserve youthful-looking skin. Since I’m in my mid-forties, I need all the extra help I can get.

One treatment you should never DIY:

At-home chemical peels because they can cause serious pigment damage if not done properly.

Must-have elements of your skincare routine:

Gentle face wash, Vitamin C (skin brightener), hydrator/ moisturizer, peptide, antioxidant to combat free radicals, hydroquinone (pigment control for my darker skin type clients), and sunscreen.

Biggest skincare misconception:

That you don’t need sunscreen. The sun is damaging to all skin types regardless of color. Everyone needs sunscreen. And there is a specific sunscreen for your face.

My favorite skincare procedure:

Right now, my favorite skin rejuvenation procedure is our Scarlett RF Microneedling. This treatment has many benefits, like improved texture, firmer skin, decreased fine lines and wrinkles, and minimal downtime.

My 2024 skin trend prediction:

I think we will see more CBD in skincare products. For someone who struggles with dry skin, this element has been a game-changer for me. Like other free radicals, CBD is effective in acne treatments, calms the skin, regulates oil production, and helps with fine lines and wrinkles. They are even finding it benefits people with psoriasis and eczema.

My favorite skincare brand:

This is hard! I would have to say Alastin. Alastin is the only skincare brand that uses TriHex technology. TriHex technology stimulates collagen and elastin, whereas the majority of skincare brands solely focus on stimulating collagen only. We need both.

What every skincare routine needs:

I am a huge proponent of individualized skincare routines, but if you are a living, breathing human being, you need an antioxidant blend serum (including Vitamin C but not just Vitamin C), a retinol/retinoid, and SPF.

Lulu Martin

Licensed Medical Aesthetician Memphis Plastic Surgery Group

My holy grail product:

For me, it's Skin Medicinals retinoid compound. I choose this because no matter how busy of a day I have had or if I am sick, etc., I can cleanse and apply a pea size of the retinoid compound and have killed three birds with one stone. The compound contains hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and tretinoin; it is hydrating, anti-inflammatory, and speeds up skin cell turnover. You just cannot beat it.

Most common skincare mistake:

One of the most common skincare mistakes I see as an aesthetician is people using too many different skincare products without the guidance of a provider.

New procedures I’m excited about:

PRP/PRF to promote collagen and elastin plus around the eyes for all things eye aging. I’m also loving the Perfect Derma Peel – it continues to impress me as it is a very productive blend of acids to provide a full face reset, but on top of that has a really powerful antioxidant called glutathione that hones in on pigment. That pigment could be sun damage pigment or, more specifically, a hormone-induced pigment called melasma. I look forward to working with this brand and seeing what they come up with this next year, in addition to the Perfect Derma Peel. And, of course, the power and efficiency of LED Light Therapy!

My best skincare advice:

Form a relationship with a dermatologist and aesthetician to guide you down your individualized skincare journey.

The biggest myth and most common misconception, to me, is that social media knows what skincare products you need in your routine and what procedures are best for you.

One product to avoid:

Nose strips for blackhead removal. This type of product overpromises and underdelivers every time. The strip acts as glue and stretches the pores on your nose, allowing more debris, old makeup, and dirt to reside.

Biggest skincare misconception:

It's a myth that a proper skincare routine should be 24 steps and take an hour and a half every morning and evening. I have seen so many patients overwhelmed by products and routines they see online when, in reality, if you have a few core products, you are in great shape!

My best-kept beauty secret:

Add a light at-home chemical peel, like glycolic or lactic acid, every two to five weeks for chemical exfoliation to your skincare regimen! Just be careful and consult a professional before you start because you may need to avoid certain products like retinoids, retinol, and AHA/BHA products for a few days before or after.

Paige Botts

My holy grail product:

Obagi Matte SPF sunscreen. Before switching to this product, I tried for years to find a sunscreen that didn't make me look oily for daily use. This sunscreen truly dries matte and acts like a primer for a flawless finish under makeup.

A new procedure I’m excited about:

Morpheus8. This procedure has a wide range of uses. Not only can patients utilize the therapy for tightening the skin on the face, but it also can be used to treat other areas of the skin. I've been working with several patients on their thighs to help improve the appearance of cellulite and skin laxity with amazing results.

My biggest piece of skincare advice:

Apply an SPF of at least 50 EVERY DAY. Sunscreen is not just for when you know you will be outside for hours. Do your research, or better yet, seek professional help to determine which skincare products you need. There is a lot of redundancy with products, and also, certain products shouldn't be mixed, like retinol and Vitamin C, which can increase skin irritation.

ASK AN EXPERT

An overhyped skincare product:

Cellulite and stretch mark creams. I have not seen any significant studies proving any topical product/cream that will improve cellulite or stretch marks. Honestly, they appear to be just an expensive body moisturizer in a fun bottle.

Skincare routine essentials:

Tretinoin and a daily SPF! Tretinoin is a prescription retinoic acid treatment that speeds up the life cycle of skin cells. It makes them divide faster and die faster, so newer, healthier cells can take their place. This helps to significantly improve the appearance of surface wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots. And everyone, male or female, young and old, should be wearing an SPF daily!

When to start using antiaging products:

The earlier the better! Our bodies stop producing collagen around the age of 30, so starting in your twenties is ideal, and then the goal is to maintain your skin as you age. Medical grade products and procedures can help to trigger collagen and elastin production once our bodies have naturally stopped doing it on their own.

Biggest skincare myth:

That you need a ten-step skincare routine. Sometimes less is more with your skin, and by choosing the correct products for your particular skin, you can have a minimal routine and still have beautiful, healthy skin.

Jordan Strack

Licensed Medical Aesthetician Glo Medical Aesthetics

My holy grail skincare product:

Alastin HydraTint! I love a product that does multiple things for my skin! It's water resistant, SPF 36, hydrating, and has a beautiful mineral tint that gives me a flawless dewy finish. I wear it EVERY SINGLE DAY.

My best-kept beauty secret:

At Glo, we don’t gatekeep, so I give everyone all my tips and tricks! Good pearls of wisdom to know are always staying hydrated, using self-tanners and never tanning beds, and the Lightstim LED bed to help reduce inflammation and boost your immune system.

My favorite skin procedure:

Microneedling because it triggers your body's natural wound-healing process to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Therefore it helps with several concerns like fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, acne, and acne scarring.

My biggest piece of skincare advice:

Always use medical-grade skincare products. The products at Ulta and Sephora are super cute and fun, and you see them all over social media, but there are two huge differences between medical-grade skincare versus over-the-counter products.

Medical-grade skincare uses a smaller molecule, so it penetrates your skin rather than just sitting on the surface like over-the-counter products, and medical-grade skincare products contain a higher percentage of active ingredients. Just because a product says hyaluronic acid or retinol doesn’t mean it has enough to make a difference in your skin.

Chatting with Beauty Influencer & Makeup Artist: Megan McKay

Megan McKay, 30, is a true influencer. She’s been influencing since before the rise of Instagram and influencer culture. If you were on YouTube in the mid-2000s, you might recognize her as the Megan half of Megan & Liz, a twin sister pop duo that gained popularity in the 2010s, uploading their songs and covers to YouTube.

After gaining nearly a million YouTube subscribers and amassing millions of views on their music videos and covers, the sisters decided to start a separate beautyfocused YouTube channel in 2009. Their fans constantly asked for makeup advice, hair tutorials, and product recommendations, and unknowingly two beauty influencers were born.

After pursuing their passion for music for many years, Megan and her sister were burned by their record label and started to feel burnout by the cutthroat music industry. Because both girls had built a combined following and unique audiences, they decided to take a break from the music scene and focus on monetizing their social media channels in 2015, specifically their Instagram accounts.

During their time touring, shooting music videos, and performing onstage, Megan learned a lot about makeup and skincare, so it was a natural next step to find her influencing niche in the beauty space.

Since becoming a full-time beauty influencer, Megan has worked with prestigious brands like Dove, Tula, and Dyson, to name a few. Although many people view influencing as an “easy” career and consider brand partnerships just cash grabs, this could not be further from the truth regarding Megan.

“I’ve consistently built an audience since I was 18 years old, and I’m fortunate that they have grown along with me,” she shares. “I’ve built trust with my followers, and they know that when I recommend a product or partner with a brand, it’s because it’s something I truly believe in and have tried out myself first.”

After watching a couple of Megan’s Instagram Reels, you can tell how passionate she is about makeup and beauty and how much effort she puts into creating premium content for her audience. A typical workday for her involves email correspondence, juggling creative briefs to ensure she’s meeting requirements and deliverables, and spending four to five hours shooting and editing content. Even when she doesn’t have content to shoot, she’s always scouring TikTok and Instagram for inspiration and to ensure she’s staying on top of trends and popular products.

In 2021, Megan added another title to her resume: professional makeup artist.

“I’ve always had a passion for makeup and loved trying new products and different types of looks,” she explains. “As I started to improve my skills and gain more confidence, I started doing my friends’ makeup and saw how happy it made them and how beautiful they felt. It brought me so much joy to be able to give them that confidence boost, and I wanted to be able to do that for others.”

As a makeup artist and beauty influencer, Megan spends a lot of time in full glam, which can be tough on her skin. She prioritizes no-makeup days when she’s not filming to give her skin a break. She’s committed to always doing her full skincare routine, rain or shine, and advises to always double cleanse after wearing makeup.

In a line of work that heavily emphasizes aesthetics and outer beauty, Megan’s biggest lesson has been learning to be comfortable in her skinwithout makeup.

“Over the last few years, I’ve gotten so confident in my makeup-free skin,” she says. “I love a full face of makeup because it’s fun for me – not because I need it.”

You can keep up with Megan on Instagram @meganmacemckay and book her for wedding or special occasion makeup on @makeupbymeganmace.

Megan’s tip for long-lasting, sweat-proof makeup

Get your makeup to last through the Memphis summer heat with Megan’s tips.

• If you aren’t using a foundation primer or setting spray, add one to your routine! This makes all the difference.

PRODUCT RECOMMENDATIONS:

PRIMER

– MILK MAKEUP Hydro Grip Primer

– Drugstore Dupe: e.l.f. Power Grip SETTING SPRAY

– O/S On Til Dawn

– Drugstore Dupe: Morphe Continuous Setting Mist

• Don’t just set your under eyes with setting powder – set your whole face!

PRODUCT RECOMMENDATIONS:

– Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Powder

– Drugstore Dupe: Revlon PhotoReady Setting Powder

• Always carry a translucent pressed setting powder with you in your purse for touch-ups.

• If you do sweat on your face, DAB – do NOT wipe it off!

• Glowy, dewy makeup may be “in” right now, but it’s not known for lasting well in the heat. Aim for a matte look if you know you’ll be outside most of the day.

Find a Floating Flow at SUP901 Yoga

Mary Elizabeth Kirkpatrick ’s paddleboard yoga studio combines the peace and serenity she finds during her yoga practice and when she is on the water.

Growing up in Hernando, Mississippi, Mary Elizabeth spent her youth as a competitive gymnast. While she was in love with the dedication and self-motivation gymnastics required, the physically taxing nature of the sport forced her to give it up entirely in high school. She ruptured a disc in her back at age 17, giving her a stress fracture that necessitated her first back surgery.

After years of recurring complications and pain following her first surgery, Mary Elizabeth underwent a second back surgery at age 28. After this surgery, her doctor recommended yoga to aid her recovery.

Though she did start yoga classes per her doctor’s recommendation, she found it slow and boring, especially compared to the high-stakes nature of gymnastics. Soon enough, however, Mary Elizabeth recounts a shift, saying, “When I did my first arm balance in yoga, something changed. I realized I can be upside down again, like in gymnastics, without risking another back injury.”

Eventually, doing yoga as recovery made her appreciate the connection to herself she felt on her mat. As a busy mother of two, yoga became her time when she could be quiet and receive energy while helping heal her body. She recalls, “ I started noticing pain relief. I didn’t realize I could live a life without pain again.”

Mary Elizabeth soon began her journey to become a yoga instructor, completing her 200-hour yoga teacher training in 2018. Since beginning her yoga journey, Mary Elizabeth has continued her education to complete her 500-hour yoga teacher training and 140-hour trauma-sensitive yoga certification, making her an incredibly educated yoga instructor.

During her years of yoga teacher training and instructing, Mary Elizabeth became interested in stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) yoga and trained to teach SUP Yoga at SUP901, where she later worked as an instructor before buying the business in 2020. Growing up spending summers at the lake and beach with her family always gave Mary Elizabeth a sense of peace and tranquility, and she has found that being on the water and in nature deepens her yoga practice and provides a stronger sense of contentment that she wants to share with the Memphis yoga community.

While balancing on a paddleboard can make balance and yoga more challenging, the SUP901 instructors offer a variety of modifications so all yogis can be comfortable and confident. Classes are offered Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. or Sundays at 5:30 p.m. at Shelby Farms, with options to rent a board or bring your own. SUP901 also offers private sessions at Shelby Farms or downtown on the harbor.

RACING FOR TWO

We all have that one hobby that has stuck with us over the years. For Brian Matochik the past two decades, that hobby has been running. His latest venture—Rolling Runners— creates race participation accessibility for individuals with disabilities to share in the fun using pushchairs.

As a parent to a non-ambulatory son with Cerebral Palsy, Brian understands the challenges parents of individuals with special needs face in getting their children involved in everyday experiences.

“As a runner, I was always looking for ways to run with my son,” he reminisces of 15-year-old Jack ’s toddler stroller years.

Five years ago, during Brian’s involvement in races around Memphis, he noticed a friend and fellow runner completing runs while pushing an adult with special needs in a chair.

It planted the seed in Brian to try pushing his son in a run for the ultimate family duo.

“As a parent of a child with special needs, we want our kids to be involved like normal children.

We want our children to get out and experience life as much as possible like a typical person would, with all the joys.”

With some community help in lending pushchairs, Brian was able to assemble a modest team of five push carts for five individuals with special needs in a highly successful 5k race.

Now in its first full year of operation, the Rolling Runners Facebook group aims for two to three events annually with its 120 members of parents and willing volunteer runners.

Brian and his wife are deeply involved in the special needs community, regularly participating in the annual Joy Prom and the Field of Friends baseball team, to name a few.

“The cool thing about this is seeing how the individuals with special needs in general just love it, being in a race atmosphere with the crowd cheering them.”

Just as rewarding is the elation parents feel when watching their children light up and enjoy these activities.“It adds a lot of value for parents when a child can experience that.”

The volunteer runners also benefit by being a part of something truly special in which they play an active role. Pushing 100-plus pounds while running a 5k is no easy feat and a tremendous physical challenge.

“Often, the runners are asking when the next race is because they just love it so much.”

While Rolling Runners hopes to continue expanding in participants with special needs, able-bodied pusher runners, and networking parents, their largest hurdle remains securing more pushchairs, which cost between 2,000 to 10,000 per unit.

Notwithstanding, Brian’s outlook is bright, and he hopes for the group to reach a 10 runner/10 rider-sized participating group in the near future.

Surf on Land this Summer

There’s a new way to get your paddle board fix this summer in Tennessee, and it doesn’t require the ocean.

The easy-to-learn land paddle – invited by two California surfers in the 90s - is gaining popularity in other states, with Serafin Massol leading the way for Memphis.

Hailing from Puerto Rico and later living in warm beach-side locations that include Mexico and Miami, Serafin has enjoyed his fair share of water-related sports, such as paddleboarding and sailing.

So when his plant-based family of three moved to Downtown Memphis five years ago due to a job relocation, the IT tech traded in his water gear for something else: the SUPxskate.

“This is a very different way of enjoying outdoor activities.”

The board mimics a paddleboard in every sense—from the board’s size and length to the use of its paddle stick.

Plus, it utilizes the same body movements and balancing mechanics needed to propel the board forward as are required on water.

“You feel like you are surfing on land,” Serafin says of the 74inch bamboo Hamboard and accompanying skate pole.

Despite weighing 30 pounds, the SUPskate is easy to maneuver through traffic and busy areas.

“It’s amazing that you can make a U-turn in an 8-foot radius.”

While the SUPskate is a full-body workout, it requires the most effort from the core and upper body.

To stay in shape, Serafin weight-lifts daily and alternates his afternoon routine between running and cycling at MeemanShelby Forest State Park.

Sprinkling in about three weekly board sessions, Serafin’s typical route starts on the corner of Main Street and Madison Avenue, traveling across the Big River Crossing and taking him through the Tennessee-Arkansas state line for a total of six miles.

The activity adds another dimension to his routine, as he enjoys staying active and being outdoors.

“If you do the same thing repeatedly, you get tired, and [exercise] becomes a hassle that’s not interesting, so I try to juggle different things.”

Trading in the level streets of Miami for the hills of Memphis adds another great dimension to his workouts—on bike, skates, and foot—paired with the convenience of Downtown Memphis’ proximity to accessible amenities.

“I barely use my car at all. Pretty much everything is within walking distance, which is great.”

The board’s unique appearance also warrants plenty of pedestrian curiosity when Serafin is cruising about.

“I get approached about the board almost every time I go out. I see the interest in people. I would definitely love to see more people doing it. It’s fun, and that’s what makes it cool to do.”

REAL GOOD BONE BROTH

In recent years, bone broth consumption has been a major health trend, with its benefits preached by celebrity health gurus like Gwyneth Paltrow and Mark Wahlberg. Jessica Henssler, through her company Real Good Bone Broth, is making it her mission to make high-quality bone broth and its many benefits accessible to the Memphis community.

Jessica has a Thai heritage, so she grew up eating and cooking meals centered around flavorful broths and soups and has always been interested in consuming delicious, healthy food. She married a chef who shared her passion for food, and together they began making broths as a fun way to pass the time during COVID-19. Initially, Jessica was making large batches to give to her sick friends, but immediately began receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback, both of her broths’ great flavors and their immune system benefits. Soon, her quarantine pastime became a passion project, and she continued researching methods to infuse the best flavors into her broths while retaining the highest quality nutrients. After five years spent perfecting her craft, Real Good Broth was born

WHAT IS BONE BROTH, AND WHAT MAKES REAL GOOD BONE BROTH SO SPECIAL?

Animal bones are full of nutrients such as collagen and amino acids, and when boiled in hot water, these nutrients are infused into the liquid to form a highprotein, nourishing broth. The nutrients within the bone broth are natural and easily absorbed by the body and provide several benefits, such as skin health, digestion, immunity, and joint health, among others. Jessica aims to get bones from local butchers whenever possible to further ensure the quality of her product, and double blanches the bones to make a clean, purified broth. This broth can then be used in many recipes or in place of water to cook simple carbs like rice or pasta to easily infuse extra protein and nutrients. As Jessica puts it, “People want to be healthy, and they want healthy options, but there has to be an easier way than practicing fad diets and synthetic supplements.”

You can find Real Good Broth at the Memphis Farmer’s Market, and check out their Instagram page @realgoodbroth for Jessica’s fun and flavorful recipes. Try Jessica’s Thai Noodle Soup using her recipe on page 47.

Spilling the Tea on Hydration

With summer in full swing, adequate hydration is a concern, but beware of marketing claims about trendy and pricy beverages promising to replete energy, restore electrolyte balance, reduce chronic disease, or assist in weight loss. Investigate for clarity on the best beverages to avoid unhelpful or potentially harmful supplements.

Alkaline Water Loaded Tea

THE CLAIMS:

The marketing of alkaline water promises to improve hydration and digestion and reduce acidity in the bloodstream, creating a less acidic environment, which helps lower the risks of inflammatory conditions such as cancer or osteoporosis.

THE CATCH:

Blood pH is tightly regulated, and no food or beverage can neutralize pH. All food and fluids consumed by mouth are processed via the digestive tract, which involves digestion in the stomach before absorption throughout the small intestine. Stomach contents are highly acidic, which provides the environment needed to break down food into nutrients small enough to be absorbed into the bloodstream. The highly acidic stomach contents enter the small intestine, making them less acidic to avoid killing the healthy bacteria designed to facilitate absorption. Alkaline water is immediately neutralized when entering the acidic digestive tract, and it has not been shown to reduce the overall pH levels of the body to any significant degree in human studies. Additionally, it has not been correlated with improved overall health, decreased cancer risk, or increased bone density.

THE CLARITY:

Save your money and opt for tap or bottled water. Invest in an at-home water filtration system for an eco-friendly approach, and use refillable water bottles. Our bodies can maintain pH balance without alkaline water or other pH-altering strategies!

THE CLAIMS:

Loaded tea is designed to provide energy, improve mental clarity and focus, boost metabolism, curb appetite, and support weight loss.

THE CATCH:

Loaded teas are a recent phenomenon primarily powered by Herbalife. Fans of loaded teas use them as meal replacements or in conjunction with weight loss diets. Since loaded teas are considered supplements and are not regulated like typical foods and beverages, disclosing ingredients isn’t required. However, loaded teas typically consist of sugar-free flavored syrups, added colorings, a highly caffeinated packet of various supplements from Herbalife, and occasionally tea. The remaining ingredients generally are a “proprietary” cocktail of herbs that, according to the Natural Medicines database, may not be suitable for children, adolescents, or individuals with certain health conditions. Additionally, high caffeine/stimulant content on an empty stomach can lead to rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure, and the potential for low blood sugar. Despite clever marketing, they are essentially energy drinks in disguise.

THE CLARITY:

Consider eating your energy with balanced meals containing protein, carbohydrates, and fat and fuel pre-workouts with easily digestible carbohydrates. Save money and swap your loaded “teas” for smoothies, lemonade, iced tea, or other refreshing drinks.

Sports Drinks

THE CLAIMS:

'Potassium-packed,' 'low-calorie,' and 'no sugar added' electrolyte beverages supercharge your workout and provide the perfect balance of electrolytes for rehydration.

THE CATCH:

While electrolyte repletion beverages can be helpful when participating in long-duration, high-intensity training, not all “sports drinks” are created equal. Electrolyte repletion drinks should have a balance of water, sodium, sugar, and potassium, crucial in repleting fluids and electrolytes lost in sweat. Still, many beverages marketed as sports drinks and electrolyte replacements contain negligible amounts of sodium or may be marketed as “sugar-free” and contain high levels of caffeine for a synthetic energy boost with few electrolytes. While some athletes are attracted to more “natural” beverages like potassium-rich coconut water, it contains very little sodium and may have inadequate carbohydrates - both crucial in maintaining hydration and energy status during exercise.

THE CLARITY:

Well-formulated sports drinks can help maintain hydration and electrolyte balance while exercising, training, or participating in competitive sports. Become label savvy and avoid “sports drinks” that contain limited amounts of electrolytes and high levels of caffeine. Aim for sports beverages containing a minimum of 180 mg sodium, 7-9.5 g of carbohydrate/sugar solution, and 60-75 mg potassium per 8 oz serving.

The benefits of alkaline water, nutritional teas, and some sports beverages are mostly over-inflated and unsupported by science. Skip the fads and stick with tried-and-true methods of hydration and electrolyte replacement!

CLEAN BEAUTY

If the ingredients aren’t something you would ingest orally, why put them on your skin? Does this mean you must throw all your skin care away and start over? No! This doesn’t mean immediately switching all of your products. Instead, try upgrading to a cleaner product each time you run out of an old one.

Here are some of my favorite clean skincare products and facials I have tried:

ORDINARY SQUALANE SERUM

Ordinary Squalane Serum is an amazing organic cruelty-free oil and moisturizer as it is 100% plant-derived squalane, a natural hydrator for our skin. Squalane is found naturally in our skin, but this plant-derived squalane comes from sugar cane, creating a formula that aids skin hydration without clogging pores. It is also major allergen free! You can also use this oil on your hair to add shine, prevent breakage, and protect from heat.

ILIA MASCARA

It’s hard to find a clean and volumizing mascara these days, but I can personally attest that Ilia mascara is a great option that contains nourishing ingredients. Ilia is ophthalmologisttested, making it great for those with sensitive eyes and those wearing contacts. It enhances and volumizes lashes without flaking, smudging, or irritating. It’s also super easy to wash off with makeup remover.

ARAZA FOUNDATION

Araza is a great natural option for foundation, blush, and more. This foundation stands out because it blocks blue light, contains natural SPF (25), and is anti-pollution. It is also made of 95 percent organic skin superfoods, a coconut postbiotic to aid the skin’s microbiome, polyphenols for skin rejuvenation, and organic oils. It is made from natural clay, which is healing, protective, and packed with minerals. It gives you light to medium coverage with a luminous dew-kissed finish.

EARTH HARBOR CELESTINE HYDRA-PLUMPING PEPTIDE SERUM

I love Earth Harbor’s vegan, cruelty-free products. I especially love the Celestine hydraplumping peptide serum for hydration and anti-aging. The seaweed peptides moisturize, build collagen and elastin, and fight free radicals in our environment. The serum also contains hyaluronic acid for hydration and skin elasticity, Vitamin B3 for skin repair, pomegranate antioxidants, aloe leaf juice to fight age spots, in addition to Vitamin C, Vitamin B5, Vitamin E, blue yarrow, essential fatty acids, polyphenols, minerals, and more.

To purchase locally, they have the Earth Harbor line at New Day Healing and Wellness in Memphis, TN. shine, prevent breakage, and protect from heat.

CLEAR LIFT FACIAL AND SCARLET MICRONEEDLING at A Beautiful You Medical Spa

I’ve personally seen the amazing regenerative effects. The ClearLift™ is laser skin resurfacing and one of the newest anti-aging treatments. It is a very clean treatment that does not use acids, chemicals, or painful abrasion. It is the perfect lunchtime facial because it is non-invasive, painless, and only takes 30 minutes. You will see visible results without the redness and recovery time that accompanies most laser treatments.

The Scarlet RF is a microneedling treatment with shortpulse radiofrequency (RF) used to decrease the appearance of aging, increase skin firmness, and decrease skin sagging. This FDA-approved treatment stimulates collagen production while repairing and tightening skin. It’s perfect for those struggling with forehead wrinkles, sagging skin, smile lines, and more.

Can what you eat impact your skin?

INFLAMMATION REDUCTION: Certain foods can promote or reduce inflammation in the body, impacting skin health. A diet high in processed foods, sugar, and highly refined oils may contribute to inflammation and skin conditions like acne. Conversely, consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation and improve skin clarity.

Another important nutrient to highlight is fiber. The gut-skin axis refers to the interplay between the gut microbiome and the health of our skin. Emerging research suggests a healthy gut plays a significant role in promoting clear and vibrant skin. A wellbalanced diet with fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains supports a diverse gut microbiome, positively influencing skin health.

The skin, the human body's largest organ, serves as a protective barrier against the elements and plays a vital role in maintaining overall health. While we often associate skincare with external products and treatments, the connection between what we eat and the health of our skin should not be overlooked.

It's no secret that a diet full of nutrient-rich foods contributes to overall health, and the condition of our skin is no exception. Our skin relies on essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients to stay healthy, radiant, and youthful. Here are a few ways in which nutrition impacts skin health:

HYDRATION: Adequate water intake is crucial for maintaining skin hydration. Dry, dehydrated skin can appear dull, flaky, and more prone to wrinkles. Drinking water and consuming hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables can help promote a supple complexion.

ANTIOXIDANT PROTECTION: A diet rich in antioxidants, such as vitamins A, C, and E, helps protect the skin from free radical damage caused by environmental factors like UV radiation and pollution. Antioxidants help combat inflammation, reduce signs of aging, and promote a healthy skin glow.

COLLAGEN FORMATION: Collagen, a structural protein, is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and preventing wrinkles. Vitamin C, zinc, and copper are necessary for collagen synthesis. Consuming citrus fruits, berries, nuts, and seeds can support collagen production.

Certain gut conditions, like leaky gut syndrome, can lead to systemic inflammation that may manifest as skin issues like eczema or psoriasis. Focusing on gut health by consuming probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, and kefir, as well as prebiotic foods like garlic, onions, and bananas, can positively impact skin conditions. 901 Nutrition’s gut-health expert, Maddie Hastings, can help you improve your gut health.

The link between nutrition and skin health is undeniable. While genetics and external factors also play a role, what we eat significantly influences the appearance and well-being of our skin. A diet rich in essential nutrients, antioxidants, and hydration supports skin health, reduces inflammation, and helps maintain a youthful complexion. Fostering a healthy gut microbiome through a balanced diet can enhance skin radiance.

Nathalie Fouque,

Runner

Running gives me freedom and flexibility. I can do it anytime, anywhere, alone, in a group, or virtually, as little or as much as I need, and I still feel the benefit.

BUCKET LIST: Hike the Appalachian trails.

UP NEXT: Conquer the Cave 5k in Alabama, Rock and Rock, San Antonio 10k, and Rock and Rock, Las Vegas Half.

FAVE FITNESS ACCOMPLISHMENT: I hiked the Grand Canyon and started on the South Kaibab trail down to the Colorado River and up via the Bright Angel trail. It took me 9 hours.

BIRTHPLACE: France

HOMETOWN: Cordova

MY GROUP: I was an occasional runner until I set a goal in 2012 to run as many races as possible. I joined the MRTC team and did Wednesday night, weekend, and coffee runs. I hit every race in town. In 2014, I joined the Fusion Fitness Women Bootcamp (Bartlett) to build strength and work on my speed. I then got addicted to more races, and I have not stopped.

FAVORITE JAMS: I like the Sirius XM “ Chill” channel.

RECENT RACES: At the Las Vegas Rock and Roll series, I placed 102nd out of 2507 by gender and have attended since 2016. In Champaign, Illinois, at the Christie Clinic, I placed 129th out of 1791 by gender. And the Illinois Pace and Pedal Perimeter Challenge, a virtual race and team of four, I placed 12th out of 37 to complete 1286 miles.

MOST MEMORABLE FITNESS EVENT: I ran several half marathons over the years and enjoyed each one. But as I turned 50, I wanted to run a half that I would remember forever. I ran it in Zion National Park, Utah. The course was at an 8,000-foot elevation with climbs that seemed to never end. But the scenery was beautiful, and it was a major challenge and an amazing memory!

BEST EATS: J. Alexander's and the prime rib with haricots verts!

DREAM DINNER COMPANY: Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She led the fight in the courts for gender equality. When she began her legal crusade, women were treated, by law, differently from men.

GO-TO GEAR: Lululemon and Saucony Endorphin Speed

I f RUNNING: Whether I run, walk, or hike, I get this overall well-being feeling. The pain that feels “so good” reminds me to stay committed and meet my goals. Exercise is my therapy to help with daily life stress and challenges, and it helps me stay strong, focused, energetic, and happy.

FAV INDULGENCE: Ice cream with lots of fudge.

KENNY FLEMING

IF I COULD ONLY HAVE ONE PIECE OF EQUIPMENT:

A set of 45 lb. DBs.

MY FITNESS IDOL:

I don’t have an idol, but I am influenced by anyone over 50 years of age lifting heavy, running long distances, climbing mountains, learning martial arts, or competing in obstacle course races or triathlons. They inspire me to keep moving.

DREAM WORKOUT PARTNER:

Dwayne “ The Rock” Johnson or David Goggins

MY DIET:

I don’t diet. I eat according to my lifestyle and activity levels. I eat roughly 2500-3000 calories daily to maintain my current weight and cardio training regimen. I focus primarily on lean protein, green veggies, and whole grains.

WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED:

My family, friends, trainers, clients, etc. I’m not the standard of health or fitness, just an ambassador. I genuinely want those I serve to love themselves and become holistically healthy.

CLASSES I TEACH:

Power (Powerbuidling program), MetKon (Metabolic Conditioning program), and Crunch (Core and cardio program)

FAV WAY TO WORKOUT:

My favorite workout is in the middle of the summer with no A/C and the music blasting, doing heavy lifts, minimal rest, and intense cardio programmed into the workout. I enjoy being uncomfortable.

BIGGEST FITNESS MYTH:

“Cardio training is better for weight loss than weight training.” I love cardio and the overall health benefits, but the best way to change body composition is to include weight training.

BIGGEST NUTRITION MYTH:

“Eating healthy is expensive.” Eating, in general, is expensive in today’s economy, but eating healthier will always yield a better return. Doctor’s visits and weight-related medications are costly, too!

MY TYPICAL WORKOUT DAY:

While listening to R&B or pop music from the 80s-90s: warm-up, jump rope, static stretch/myofascial release, and dynamic stretch. I then pre-work by doing three rounds of lightweight exercises associated with my main lifts. I then workout with a heavy main lift, moderate main lift and superset, accessory work, and a core or cardio finisher.

GOALS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD:

Complete the Spartan Race Trifecta. I want to encourage our clients to challenge their fitness levels with activities outside of the gym.

SETBACKS:

Too many to count, but each setback was necessary for my development. I’m thankful for every trial He has allowed me to overcome.

BEST ADVICE:

Don’t try to lose weight or gain muscle. Instead, become someone who loses weight or gains muscle by living a lifestyle that yields those kinds of results. People who achieve those goals enjoy physical activity, sleep and eat well, manage their stress levels, create and maintain healthy boundaries, and, most importantly, enjoy small successes along the journey. The best results always come from someone making fitness and nutrition a lifestyle instead of a barrier.

FITNESS TIP:

Learn the difference between “working out” and “training.” Working out is a random approach to fitness meant to improve physical health. Training is planned, progressive, and specific. Training takes time and can be boring, but it's designed to reach a goal. If you have a goal, be prepared to train.
