WELCOME TO THE MEETING! Attendance: AM, CM, Chantelle, AB, MM, CF plus Mrs. Courville and Ms. Gerber and Norm, VCPAC Director 1. Acknowledgement of territory (1min)  Done 2. Principal’s Report (10 min) ‐ A ‘Tech Team’ has been created to help the school move forward with technology in the classroom. The group meets every 3rd Wednesday and has already added specific applications for students on IPADs that can be checked out by classrooms ‐ Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary will be coming to the school to lead five travelling programs. Most of the programs will be free thanks to an Evening Optimists donation to the sanctuary. ‐ The basketball jamboree is next Wednesday at Shoreline Middle School. The students will be wearing the new uniforms for the first time (lime green). ‐ Floor hockey starts soon and may be open to grade 3, 4 and 5—details to come ‐ There have been 41 new registrants entering Kindergarten in September, up from 31 last year. There has been a smaller increase in previous years but this year is consistently higher. ‐ The cross boundary transfer process is starting. ‐ Ready Set Learn is next Wednesday at the community center from 10:30 – 12:00pm. Kindergarten teachers and administrators will be there, but parent volunteers are welcome to assist AM promoting the PAC and the school to parents. ‐ report cards will be sent home on March 7th (except for those in Ms. Kosh's class—they will come later as she is currently ill) ‐ ‘Buddies’ from Esquimalt High will be back this year and will work with students in Ms. Gerber and Ms. Prince’s classes ‐ Feb. 24 is Pink Shirt Day. This year’s theme is kindness. Emily will be meeting with the grade fives to discuss leadership and then will also speak with each class about being kind. A PAC member asked Ms. Courville how she thought the District was doing to prevent bullying. Ms. Courville replied that more concrete skills are taught now to help students deal with conflicts and practise kindness. 5. Executive Reports a. President’s/Exec Report (5 min) ‐ n/a b. Treasurer’s Report (5 min) ‐ 8162.67 ‐ general ‐ 4284.17 ‐ gaming (although just wrote the $295 Can Lit chq and chq for field trip of $100) Action item: CM to talk to Shelley about easiest way to transfer raffle funds into Rain Garden account ‐ 1534.81 ‐ playground c. VCPAC Report (Amy) (5 min) ‐ held at Margaret Jenkins ‐ Piet Langstraat, Superintendent of Schools spoke about a learning plan he is creating for the District based on the question: “What do you want your kids to have learned when they graduate?” And “How can the District make it happen?” ‐ There is VCPAC funds available for the Vancouver Island Parent Conference for those PACs that did not receive District funds ‐ Some discussion at the VCPAC meeting around the staff to student ratio for walking fieldtrips. Currently 1:10 would like it to be 1:15. Nothing will change until all aspects of the change are carefully considered. 6. Business/Action items arising from previous minutes: a. b. Parent Ed night (Carolyn) ‐ offered free First Aid to caregivers at Vic West and Macaulay. ‐ 9 participants (about half were from Macaulay) ‐ Great collaboration between school and presenter was fantastic. ‐ Idea for next year: Nutrition Action item: AB to speak to Public Health and other agencies that might offer it for free. Also try collaboration with Macaulay and also Craigflower Elem. c. Movie night Feb 25 ‐ Showing Inside Out on Netflix. ‐ Ms. Gerber to help with wifi ‐ Warren, MM, Chantelle to set up and sell goodies ‐ AB picking up popcorn and possibly getting more juice boxes d. VIPC Feb 27 ‐ funding received for two free tickets. CF and Chantelle will attend. e. Playground/ grant writing team (Aaren/ Maria) ‐ Concept drawing to come. ‐ grant writing has started ‐ communicating with Eagle View Elem and possibly Macaulay who has a volunteer grant writer ‐ Another idea: Sutton Westcoast Realty offers school’s $5000 for playgrounds (adopt‐a‐ school program) f. Walkathon May 27 ‐ Mammoth prize will be put in school safe ‐ Ms. Courville to provide school district charitable number for fundraising ‐ need to decide on colour of water bottle so they can be ordered...possibly have a picture to bring to classrooms to show students ‐ AM attended staff meeting today and staff was very receptive to another WWW ‐ Talking to classes on Friday, Feb. 26th (in 3 weeks) ‐ Monday, March 7th—need to start distributing pledge forms in preparation for Spring Break (starts the following week)….need to finalize incentives and create pledge forms and purchase baggies ahead of time (March PAC meeting is too late) ‐ Pledge forms with students from March 7 – April 18th (send out reminders in every possible way during week of April 4th and April 11th) ‐ WWW on May 27th…all incentives need to be packaged and ready for distribution ‐ Ms. Courville to provide the size breakdown for the shirts www.vicwestpac.com vicwestpac@gmail.com FB: Vic West Elementary PAC

‐ considering having ‘Market Bucks’ as one of the incentives…would need to explain them to students and parents ‐ A water station was suggested for the back field this year Action item: CF to contact Spiral Café about providing discounted gift cards again and musicians. Also contact Sunset Lodge and invite seniors again. g. Bake sale (Heidi?) ‐ need to check in with Heidi to see if she’d still like to do this. 7. New business a. Ideas/ questions ‐ Seaquarium has been paid in full with PAC funds this year but we will promote Ms. Carrico’s class blog to support the Go Fund Me account.
