Updating and sharing medical knowledge is essential in order to improve the quality of medical care worldwide, optimizing treatments, reducing mortality rates and improving the patients’ quality of life. This is why it is so important to spread the medical knowledge in the fellows’ countries of origin and thus strengthen their health systems.
“In AMSA we have come a long way and we are aware of all the work that still needs to be done. We work with total dedication to fulfill our mission and vision; we invest in human capital to improve the quality of health services in Latin America. Our purpose aligns with the Physicians Advocacy to help others”

OMI Seminars in SALZBURG, AUSTRIA
The physicians that participate in the OMI seminars in Salzburg, Austria, are selected based on their merits and leadership. They must be Mexican citizens, younger than 40, fluent in English, and have social skills and a willingness to share their experience and knowledge in Mexico when they come back; this has a direct impact on the country’s most vulnerable groups.
The faculty members, world-renowned physicians, donate their time and experience during the seminars, forging close ties with the fellows.

June18th -24th, 2023
The seminar has been an exceptional learning experience, an opportunity to remember that, as health professionals, every action we take is also an act of leadership, an example that has a direct influence on others. The dialogues with doctors like Evan Fieldston, Scott Switalski, Patricia DeRusso and Brendon Arieta, professionals of the highest level, were a reminder of the importance of sharing knowledge. Exchanging experiences and expertise is a fundamental ingredient when learning about techniques and tools to make us better leaders. The proposed route to build our leadership begins with self-knowledge and moving forward with courage and emotional intelligence towards skills such as managing our time, managing our energy and focus, adapting and being flexible. We learned about different types of leadership and communication styles, which allow us to influence, persuade and negotiate. We also learned about the importance of building high-performance teams that strive hard, promoting talent and encouraging hard work; inspired by a mission and vision that allow the establishment of specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely objectives. We also learned the differences between a mentor, a sponsor and a coach, similar profiles, but whose differences enrich the medical leadership process, which must be evaluated daily in a constructive, positive way, with well-established parameters. Systemic thinking and strategic planning are two concepts that guarantee that the established project will reach its goal. Systemic thinking helps us to be aware of the relationship between the components of our areas of influence, how they oppose and converge; while strategic planning gives us the bases to reaffirm or redefine the mission and build specific objectives to align forces and opportunities while mitigating barriers, in a permanent process of empowerment of our collaborators and colleagues. This seminar also allowed me to learn from the experiences and visions of my colleagues, highly trained doctors specialized in clinical research, administrative management and other medical specialties. It was a huge academic opportunity that created an environment of expert level experiences and wisdom. During the workshops, I was able to develop my leadership and coaching skills and also learn from the strengths of other fellows. It was a new starting point for my daily work back home, definitely a route readjustment in which I now know, my work as a specialist doctor, teacher and colleague clearly has an impact on others, especially our patients, to whom we owe humility, empathy and professionalism until the last moment. The white coat should make us better human beings.

I am very thankful to AMSA for the opportunity to attend this seminar. There were very interesting discussions between fellows and faculty members on different topics and ways of managing patients, which greatly enriched knowledge. Having the opportunity to approach an expert of that level with questions such as a theoretical concept or even the medical management regarding a specific patient back home is priceless. I am excited to be able to share all the knowledge I acquired in the seminar with my colleagues and thus be able to make a difference in the management of patients with these complex pathologies.

I will always be very grateful.
MEDICAL Observerships
All the fellows that participate in the OMI seminars in Salzburg, Austria, are candidates for a one-to-three-month medical observership in Europe or the United States, at one of the many medical institutions that have a partnership with OMI. The selection process is based on the physicians’ merits and commitment to AMSA back in Mexico.
The physicians directly benefit from:
• Exchange of experiences and professional practice
• Knowledge of new techniques and treatment protocols
• Access to modern hospitals
• Creation of joint research and collaborative study projects

Salzburg University Hospital
My one-month stay at the Salzburg University Hospital helped me create strategic partnerships with colleagues who are experts in retina and uveitis; this will be super helpful when solving complex clinical cases back in Mexico. This observership made me realize that the level of knowledge and experience that we have in Mexico is of excellent quality, our greatest difference relies basically in each country’s health system and the access to paraclinical studies and treatments. After this great experience, I have started a monthly online forum in which different specialists in ocular inflammation collaborate to resolve complex cases during an hour session. I have invited a colleague from Kosovo with whom I shared the OMI seminar back in 2022, two colleagues from Salzburg and several Mexican specialists from Mexico City, Monterrey, Aguascalientes and Chihuahua. This experience definitely enriched my knowledge regarding diseases that are not very common in Latin America and has also strengthened the academic relation between specialists from different countries around the world.

OMI-MEX and AMSA Seminars in MEXICO
OMI-MEX is a joint initiative between the Open Medical Institute and AMSA. Since the beginning of this academic collaboration in 2010, 768 Mexican physicians have participated in OMI programs in Salzburg and OMI faculty have trained more than 4,000 physicians in 85 seminars in different states of Mexico.
The goal is to have the OMI curriculum travel the globe with the same expert faculty who teach in OMI seminars in Salzburg, Austria, also participating as faculty members in the Seminars in Mexico. The material presented in Mexico mirrors what was taught in Salzburg the year before. Throughout 2023, 12 OMI- MEX seminars took place under the academic leadership of Weill Cornell Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Duke University, Columbia University and the Institut Pasteur in France.
OMI-MEX Seminars have a 3-day program and are organized in collaboration with public and private health institutions, Mexican organizations and/or medical universities.
Following OMI’s four-step approach, the initiative has been so effective in Mexico as it is in Central and Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa.

The program has distinctive features that make it unique and highly competitive:
• Primarily aimed at management teams, doctors and other health professionals who occupy management positions.
• Structured program based on a solid conceptual framework that organizes the contents logically and directs them towards the realization of a project during the program.
• Focused on the leadership-management concept and not on administration or management.
• Focused on medical care and not on the understatement of “health care” or “health institutions”.
• Focused on the concepts of quality and efficiency of the medical care proposed by the Institute of Medicine.
• Taught by professors of recognized national and international prestige, who have extensive experience in leadership and senior management.

AMSA’s Award 2023
In 2020, the year that marked AMSA’s Tenth Anniversary, the “AMSA Award” was established as a way to recognize members of the health sector who, with their initiatives and leadership, improve the quality of health services in Mexico.
• In 2020, the first edition of AMSA’s Award was granted to David Kershenobich, MD, at that time occupying the position as General Director of the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán; recognizing his dedication and outstanding leadership during his career in the health sector in Mexico and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The award was assigned to the development of a Telemedicine project at this Institute.
• In 2021, the AMSA Award was given to the Carlos Slim Foundation for its great vision and commitment with the Mexican society in the construction of the COVID-19 Temporary Unit in Mexico City, with the support of civil society organizations and important Mexican businessmen. It also recognized its collaboration with the AstraZeneca pharmaceutical for the manufacture of the COVID-19 vaccine that benefited more than 150 million people in Latin America. Additionally, two important leaders of the Mexican health sector were publicly recognized for their outstanding work during the COVID-19 pandemic, Guill- ermo Torre Amione, MD, Rector of TecSalud and Vice President of the Research Division at Tec de Monterrey, and Francisco Moreno Sanchez, MD, recognized Mexican specialist in microbiology and infectology and Director of the Internal Medicine Division at ABC Medical Center Observatorio Campus. It was because of the information they shared on their social media and other sources that the Mexican population was well informed, knew how to act and was surrounded by trustworthy data to prevent panic.
• In 2023 we recognized and expressed our gratitude to the ABC Medical Center for opening its doors to AMSA and adopting OMI’s educational model to train physicians from public and private health institutions. Alliances like these are proof that by joining efforts we can achieve social impact and improve health services at all levels of care. Since 2013 we have trained more than 1,700 young doctors at their facilities.
health impact award
AMSA
educates, promotes and motivates young Mexican physicians.
In the words of José María Zubiría General Director at ABC Medical Center, who received AMSA’s Award 2023.
“The constant training of human resources for the improvement of health and clinical research are strategic elements for the ABC Medical Center, who seeks to promote specialists and experts that encourage continuous improvement and innovation in patient care. The number of professionals enrolled exceeds 520 in undergraduate programs, social service, and postgraduate medicine and nursing; and more than 1,200 nurses participate in continuing education programs.
Our medical residencies, with more than 200 participants, qualify very well in the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) programs and are highly demanded. Nearly 60 interns and 45 undergraduate students collaborate with us, and it is thanks to the commitment of doctors and nurses that we have consolidated our Institution as a solid organization in the training of young talent.
These activities along with those carried out by the Hospital’s Doctors Association and Medical Practices for the Development and the doctors’ constant update in medical knowledge have been strongly and positively impacted by AMSA.
Gerardo Legorreta, Romeo Rodríguez President of IMSS Foundation, Pablo Legorreta, Becky Aguilar-Álvarez de Sáenz and José María Zubiría, General Director at ABC Medical Center.
The initiatives created to raise the level and quality of healthcare in Eastern Europe laid the foundations that gave Pablo and Almudena the vision of strengthening talent in their own country. As a result, they joined forces with OMI and developed a program that has trained more than 1,700 doctors in this social partnership with the ABC Medical Center. And “trained” does not represent their actual reach.
Up until the end of 2023, 65 doctors have participated in OMI seminars in Salzburg, 750 in seminars in Mexico that have taken place at the ABC Medical Center, 247 in seminars focused on heart diseases with KARDIAS Foundation, 350 in OMI-MEX seminars in Oaxaca and 289 in online seminars.
It should be noted that these doctors have been able to establish a professional global network that allows them to discuss clinical cases from a distance and evaluate the different alternatives for each patient’s treatment. This professional networking makes it easier for them to discern diagnoses, treatments and results that ultimately benefit many more people. The social return of the program is enormous. This program also encourages doctors to participate as faculty; more than 150 health professionals from the ABC Medical Center have altruistically dedicated their time and effort.
José María Zubiría, MD, General Director at ABC Medical Center and David Kershenobich. MD, Member of AMSA’s Board.
Many doctors have told us that when they teach, they also learn, since the interaction with the participants can lead to very formative discussions for everyone. And like everything in life, growth and evolution open the doors to new opportunities. On one hand, the adaptation of standards carried out by OMI will allow an increase in the seminars’ academic level; on the other hand, exploring ways to expand the seminars’ impact will pose new challenges, but also opportunities.
It is estimated that the gap in the access to high quality health services could widen if complex structural problems are not solved. Prevention and timely diagnosis could somehow reduce the saturation of the health system, mainly in the public sector. Therefore, doctors that are part of a patient’s primary care have an enormous responsibility, and those of us who constitute the specialized care sector of the country must support. In order to be able to structure a scheme that integrates current programs and initiatives that cover this segment of medicine, we will need
Carlos Navarro, MD, Member of AMSA’s Board, Mariiu and Andrea Hernández.
a deep understanding of the capabilities, technologies, regulations and incentives that allow the development of a branch of telemedicine aimed at doctors in the high-quality primary care model.
The ABC Medical Center is committed to the continuous improvement of health services and I am sure that with AMSA’s innovative capacity we will be able to move forward in the process to strengthen the programs and incorporate those in which we can have a positive impact on society”.
We also gave a special recognition to the IMSS Foundation with whom we share the vision that continuous education is the key to progress. We signed an academic agreement with them in 2016. Within the framework of this academic agreement, we have trained 711 doctors from this institution, 118 of which have traveled to Salzburg to attend OMI seminars.
IMSS Foundation has provided scholarships to its doctors covering the flights’ total costs, which represents a contribution of $180,000 dollars, a direct investment in human capital.
Concha Legorreta de Angoitia, Concha Creel de Legorreta, member of AMSA’s Board, and Becky Sáenz.
OMI GLOBAL network and impact
In 2022, we extended the OMI program in Mexico by inviting Latin American doctors to participate. In July, OMI announced the official launch of OMI Vietnam, with which we now have a continuous medical education global program with 3 training centers: Salzburg, Austria, Mexico City and Hanoi in Vietnam.
The Open Medical Institute has an extensive partnership network and collaborates with institutions and individuals across the globe. OMI’s international partners are actively engaged in promoting the OMI programs to local healthcare professionals and providing administrative, financial, and logistical support. The OMI local coordinators, our partners in the fellows’ home countries, offer valuable information and assistance to physicians who are interested in the OMI programs. Despite globalization, medical care is local. It is in our common interest to consistently build local capacity and significantly improve the quality of healthcare services worldwide.
When young physicians participate in an OMI program, they return to their home countries equipped with state-of-the-art medical information, tips and tricks from the most experienced specialists and a network of colleagues and mentors whom they may consult with for the rest of their careers. This makes them ideally qualified to take on leadership positions in their own countries while simultaneously improving care for their patients. Since 1993, more than 2,300 American and European physicians have donated their time to teach and mentor colleagues from around the world. With more than 24,500 alumni living in 128 countries, our impact is global.
