Talk of the Town A Warm Welcome to Ampthill Park Good afternoon and welcome to Ampthill Park for our fourth home match of the season. In what is anticipated to be played in much colder weather than when we last congregated here.

An extended warm welcome to the management, players and officials of Wodson Park, as well as to today’s match officials.

Today’s match is to be played on Non League Day. This event was set up by James Doe in 2010 as a social media experiment, after being inspired by a pre-season trip to Devon to watch Queens Park Rangers play at Tavistock. It has now grown to become an annual part of the football calendar, backed

by Premier League and Football League clubs, MPs, celebrities, media organisations, charities and most importantly the nonleague clubs themselves and the fans who turn up on the day.

Ediz Greengrass is a ball playing centre back that joins us from Spartan Premier Division side Biggleswade United.

Kyle McLeish joins from Bedford and has already made his Amps league debut; showing his attacking prowess as he scored in the 2-3 defeat at Winslow United last weekend.

A warm welcome back to Conrad Zylko as he returns to the club following 3 years away at Newcastle University. Congratulations on your degree Conrad and welcome back to the Amps.

Club captain Louie Dillon is in line to make his 200th senior appearance for the club today, having made his debut on 24th September 2014. At the time of his debut Louie had just turned 16. Four seasons after his debut has was made Club Captain and today, aged 21 the 200 match milestone is expected to be reached.

Ampthill Town will be marking the occasion, by supporting their nominated charity Prostate Cancer UK. £1 from all adult admission will be donated to the charity, as well as the proceeds from a football card and a bottle raffle.

With recent results not being favourable for the Town, Ampthill will be doing everything they can to get their season back on track whilst Wodson Park look to avenge the 4-0 score line the Amps inflicted on them earlier this season.

On the playing side, the Ampthill squad has been added to in recent weeks with the signings of Ediz Greengrass, Conrad Zylko and Kyle McLeish.

Away Day Match Reports Saturday 28th September 2019 Beds Senior Trophy 1st Round Cranfield United 3 Ampthill Town 0 The Amps were knocked out of the Beds Senior Trophy in the first round, away to Cranfield United.

Perfect weather for plane spotting...

The Beds County Premier Division side led 1-0 at the break and went on to add two further goals in the second half, without reply.

In front of a crowd of 67 that consisted of as many away followers as home fans, there was little to get excited about for those that had made the trip to Crawley Road from Ampthill.

The only events of any note was that Amp new boy Kyle McLeish made his debut from the bench and there were a few nice aeroplanes coming in to land at nearby Cranfield airfield.

Saturday 5th October 2019 League Match Winslow United 3 Ampthill Town 2 Last Saturday the Amps were on the road, this time away to Winslow United in a league encounter.

With 84 spectators watching on, Ampthill Town were unable to bring any points back to Bedfordshire.

Making his full debut for the Town was Kyle McLeish, who marked his debut with a goal in the second half. Also on the scoresheet was Jake Kissiedu.

Both Amps goals were scored in the second half; the Amps going into the break at 3-0 down.

Time was spent in the sin bin for both striker Jamie Cerminara and defender Glenn Cooksley,

This season the Amps will play in no fewer than 5 cup competitions. This consolidated view will help to keep track of the progress made so far.

North Beds Charity Cup:

1st Round (by end of Nov 2019) Bedford v Ampthill Town Langford v Biggleswade Biggleswade United v Stotfold Barton Rovers v Potton United

The Amps played away to Crawley Green in the 1st Qualifying Round, but were knocked out at the first hurdle 4-2.

Both Amps goal were scored by Jamie Cerminara.

Beds Senior Trophy: The Amps are out of the Beds Senior Trophy after a 3-0 defeat away to Beds County side Cranfield United in the first round.

League Challenge Trophy: After beating Unite MK 2-0 away from home in the first round, Town have been handed a home tie against fellow Division One side Brimsdown in the 2nd round. This match will take place on Tuesday 29th October. This will be the Amps next home match.

Division One Cup: Following a bye in the 1st Round, the 2nd round draw has taken place and Town will be at home to Langford or Stotfold on Tuesday 5th November.

These 2 sides will play each other on Wednesday 16th October with the winner heading to Ampthill in early November.

Last season Ampthill Town were finalists in this competition and the full draw is as follows:

Semi Finals Bedford or Ampthill Town v Langford or Biggleswade Biggleswade United or Stotfold v Barton Rovers or Potton United Our away tie at Bedford has now been scheduled for Tuesday 26th November.

None of the other ties have been scheduled yet, according to published fixtures.

In June 2012 the two Wodson Park Football clubs (Senior and Youth) amalgamated to create today’s club. The senior section was founded in 1997 by John Murphy, with sides playing out of Wodson Park Sports and Leisure Centre in Ware.

The teams progressed through the leagues and in 2009 the club agreed a deal to ground share with neighbours Ware FC on promotion to the first division of the Spartan South Midland Football League. For the 2013-2014 season they moved back to Wodson Park Sports and Leisure Centre.

The 2017-8 season, started with a managerial change one month into the season with the departure of Kristian Munt and Robbie Lloyd in early September.

Neil Conner took up the post of first team manager on 25th September assisted by David Stingemore in his sixth season at the club.

Following a job change Neil Conner stood down as manager and Neil Draper took over the role on 25th August but stood down on 28th October.

In the hot seat for an interim period was David Stingemore who has been assistant manager for the past six seasons.

This Current season has seen a complete overhaul of the senior team. In comes new manager AppleMartyn Westcott who has introduced a new look team.

Development Corner Latest News from The Dev Today Ampthill Town Development head for Crawley Road, to play league leaders Cranfield United Reserves. This will be tough test for the development side as the hosts have a 100% record, having won 6 from 6; from these 6 matches they have only conceded 5 goals, in comparison to the 33 they have scored.

The Amps are currently in 12th place, of the now 15 team division (following the withdrawal of Eynesbury Rovers Reserves). The 4 points collected so far this season have come as a result of a home draw against Kempston Athletic and a home win against Houghton Athletic. The other matches have resulted in defeats; away to Henlow and home defeats against Elstow Abbey and Sporting Lewsey Park last Saturday.

Following every match the development side have been complimented by the opposition’s coaching staff for the way they try to play football on the deck and to pass the ball through the phases. This is of little consolation after a defeat, but the boys have stuck to their principles and in the long term they will be better players for it.

That being said, many of the sides in the Beds County Football League have been around for some time and the average age of their squads is considerably greater than the Amps. They show a more streetwise approach to matches and have developed the game management skills that the Ampthill Development players will gain in time.

The Spartan Development league last season was, as the name suggests, formed solely of development sides with a large proportion of squads assembled with players under 21 and looking to progress into first team football.

The BCFL on the contrary, is filled with players that are playing at the pinnacle of their career. Each club has its fair share of standout players, but what is consistent across all teams is that every player wants to win at all costs. And if they don't have the required ability they call upon that aforementioned street wisdom to find ways to win.

This may sound obvious, but in the Spartan development league last season, and to a certain degree within the squad at present, the players play with more selfishness, with a greater focus on their own development as they understandably don't foresee their long term future in a dev squad.

Until the first goal in every match played so far this season, the Amps have been on top and looked like the side to take the lead, only for a couple (usually more) chances to be missed and the opposition to then take their first chance of the match. Heads naturally drop and then the whole match becomes an uphill struggle as the experienced BCFL sides grow in confidence.

The season is still young and with every match played, the side will gain valuable experience; before long they will have the know how to go alongside their undoubtable footballing abilities.

Ampthill Town Football Club The History Pages Ampthill Town Football Club dates back to the 1880’s, with reliable league records available from the 1950’s.

The club joined the South Midlands League at the start of the 1951/52 season; winning this league in 1959/60 (losing only two league matches all season) and were then runners-up in the following season.

The Amps finished bottom of the South Midlands Premier Division in the 1964/65 season and started the following season in the United Counties League Division Two.

This prolonged stay ended at the end of the 1986/87 season when the club finished bottom of the league, winning just one match all season and finishing on a dreary 4 points (when it was 2 points for a win) and were relegated to UCL Div One. The club re-joined South Midlands League in Division One for the 1991/92 season. Then again as part of the reorganisation in 1993/94 Ampthill Town joined the newly formed Senior Division.

In 1997/98 the Amps were founder members of the Spartan South A few mid-table finishes followed and Midlands League Senior Division, but this season ended with relegation to at the end of the 1968/69 season, Division One with 16 points from 30 after a sixth place finish they were matches. promoted to UCL Division One. In 1972 the United Counties Division One was renamed the United Counties Premier Division. From the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties the club remained in the UCL Premier Division.

They bounced straight back and were promoted as runners-up, then followed this up with a runners-up place in the Senior Division at the end of the 1999/2000 season.

In 2001 the Senior Division was renamed Division One and this is where the club remained until 2011/12, when they finished runners up and were promoted to the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division. A fifth-place finish was followed by collecting the runners up medals in 2013/14. The club went from finishing second, to finishing second bottom and were relegated to SSML Division One. Finishing fourteenth for 3 consecutive seasons. That run was ended last season (2018/19) with a tenth-place finish.

In the closing couple of months of the campaign Town won seven of their last nine league games with their only defeats coming at champions Harefield United and Buckingham Athletic. Among their wins was an incredible 11-0 win over Broxbourne Borough with Jamie Cerminara scoring five and Brandon Carney four, including a second half hat-trick. Ampthill also made it to the North Beds Charity cup final where they lost to Biggleswade FC.

The 133rd AGM of The International Football Association Board (The IFAB) held in Aberdeen, Scotland on 2 March 2019 approved a number of amendments to, and clarifications of, the Laws of the Game for 2019/20.

Three changes were approved following 2 years of worldwide experiments; •

The introduction of yellow and red cards for misconduct by team officials.

A player being substituted leaving the field at the nearest point on the boundary line.

•

A goal kick and a free kick for the defending team in their own penalty area, the ball is in play as soon the kick is taken (it can be played before it leaves the penalty area).

Attacking team players must be at least 1m away from a defensive ‘wall’.



The goalkeeper only has to have one foot on the goal line at a penalty kick.



New dropped ball procedure.

Substitutes – Law 3 A player who is being substituted must leave by the nearest point on the touchline/goal line.

So players will now have to think twice about how they exit the pitch and, not only that, they must also make their way straight to the technical area or dressing room after being subbed, or risk being sanctioned for unsporting behaviour.

Dropped Ball – Law 8 & 9 If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper. If play is stopped outside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the point of the last touch.

In all cases, all the other players (of both teams) must be at least 4m (4.5yds) away.

If the ball touches the referee (or another match official) and goes into the goal, team possession changes or a promising attack starts, a dropped ball is awarded.

Handball – Law 12 Deliberate handball remains an offence.

The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick: 1. the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm 2. a player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity 3. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger 4. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm)

Penalty Kick – Law 14 The team’s penalty taker can have (quick) treatment/assessment and then take the kick.

The goalkeeper must not be touching the goalposts/crossbar/nets; they must not be moving.

The goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot on/in line with the goal line when the kick is taken; cannot stand behind the line.

Goalkeepers are not permitted to stand in front of or behind the line. As the kicker can ‘stutter’ in the run, it is reasonable that the goalkeeper can take one step in anticipation of the kick.

Team Officials – Law 5 A team official guilty of misconduct will be shown a YC (caution) or RC (sending-off); if the offender cannot be identified, the senior coach who is in the technical area at the time will receive the YC/RC. Goal Kick – Law 16

The ball is in play once the kick is taken; it can be played before leaving the penalty area.

Opponents must remain outside the penalty area until the ball is in play.

Goal Celebrations – Law 12 A Yellow Card for an ‘illegal’ celebration (e.g. removing the shirt) remains even if the goal is disallowed.

Kick-Off – Law 8 The team that wins the toss can now choose to take the kick-off or which goal to attack (previously they only had the choice of which goal to attack) Medical Breaks – Law 7

Difference between ‘cooling’ breaks (90 secs – 3 mins) and ‘drinks’ breaks (max 1 min).

In the interests of player safety, competition rules may allow, in certain weather conditions (e.g. high humidity and temperatures), ‘cooling’ breaks (from ninety seconds to three minutes) to allow the body’s temperature to fall; they are different from ‘drinks’ breaks (maximum one minute) which are for rehydration.

Players’ Equipment – Law 4 Multi-coloured/patterned undershirts are allowed if they are the same as the sleeve of the main shirt.

Quick Free Kick and YC/RC – Law 12 If the referee is about to issue a YC/RC but the non-offending team takes the free kick quickly and creates a goal-scoring opportunity, the referee can delay the YC/RC until the next stoppage if the offending team was not distracted by the referee.

Temporary Dismissals In addition to these law changes, the 2019/20 season will see the introduction of sin bins (formally named temporary dismissals) from step 5 (Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division level) down. These are explained in more detail on the next page.
