Offering a leisure activity which is accessible to as many people as possible was the leitmotiv of Gaston Maulin, a development pioneer in Les Sybelles. This was a successful wager as it became the 4th largest linked ski area in France and the 7th largest in Europe. The history of Les Sybelles see P. 6, is the product of a common desire to promote the region’s flagship activity: skiing. Since it was established in 2003, this relatively new ski area has been committed to an ecoresponsible approach see P. 8, to allow everyone to have access to this incredible natural environment. An indisputably popular area for both families and fans of skiing with a panoramic backdrop, everyone will find something they enjoy on the Les Sybelles slopes. This ski area maintains its distinct character and image by constantly modernising its facilities. For example, this winter, several new elements have been added which are sure to delight skiers see P. 6. From its high terraced mountain pastures to the resorts’ wide snow fronts, the Les Sybelles pistes offer a great variety of slopes and an atmosphere which makes it accessible even for complete beginners. As a result, it is the ideal playground for learning how to do an array of snow sports see P. 12.

Les Sybelles

At the heart of this star-shaped ski area, Ouillon is the central summit, inter-connecting all of the resorts. Its plateau, at over 2,000 metres altitude, is a setting which brings together skiers from various resorts and where every winter, events brings the place to life see P. 12.

2

In the Les Sybelles valleys, tourism fits in harmoniously with the environment and mountain farmers are still working in the area. On Les Balcons de la Maurienne, six extraordinary resorts see P. 10, are where this major ski area experience begins, with the legendary Aiguilles d’Arves as a backdrop. To welcome holiday makers there are plenty of great deals, and this winter, two new cosy residences with a relaxed family ambiance are to be discovered see P. 14.

What’s new

A new skiing adventure game: the Sybelles Explor’Games®

this winter ?

Every winter Les Sybelles invests to improve the skiing conditions and to create unforgettable moments for its skiers.

2 new pistes A freeriding area in Le Corbier

A Sybelle “Cheers!” A refreshing pale ale, a red ale with caramel notes flavoured with vulneraria flowers or even a stout with honey flavours, there are three Sybelles beers to try this winter in our resorts. Produced by the La Furieuse Brewery, they are on sale in all of the best establishments. Alcohol can damage your health, please drink responsibly.

Left in its natural condition (marked out and secured but not groomed), the beautiful ‘Jonquilles’ black piste is located under the Mont-Corbier chairlift. It is 695m long with a 282m descent. It joins the 3 other freeriding pistes created last winter in Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves (Bartavelle, Perdrix and Perrons Bas) so you can hit the slopes whilst preserving the natural environment.

Never seen before in a ski area, Les Sybelles has allocated 393 ha to the Sybelles Explor Games®: a scripted adventure game guided by a specialised mobile phone app. With this new experience, the customer is invited to discover the pistes in-depth and to flit from one area to another in a fun way. The objective of the game: to save the planet from climate change caused by a rival clan and to also make the public aware of the need to protect the environment. Can be downloaded on IOS and Androïd: Sybelles Explor Games® by Atelier Nature

A new red piste to enjoy the wild landscapes of Saint-Colombandes-Villards Heading for Vallée des Villards, at the summit of Mont Cuinat at 2,078m altitude, the new red run Culaz runs along the Bellard ridge. Between Belledonne and Maurienne, it has a splendid panoramic view with Mont Blanc. This new route adds a new dynamic to this unique area of Sybelles.

Making history in Les Sybelles The Sybelles linked ski area differs from its counterparts by its young and atypical story. His creation in the early 2000s reveals the willingness of a territory to register in a common promotion dynamic of its flagship activity : ski.

Les Sybelles

The development of the resorts…

6

The first tourists to the region were climbers who came to explore the Aiguilles d’Arves. From the start of the 20th century, the valley’s inhabitants,

equipped with skis featuring seal skins, came to enjoy the sunny open areas of the small valleys of Arvan and Villards.

1937

1960

The first ski lift was opened in La Toussuire and the resort was established. The first tourism establishment, Hôtel de la Roche, was built earlier in 1926 to welcome hikers.

A ski lift was installed in the hamlet of La Chal, in Saint-Jeand’Arves.

1948 The first ski lift called ‘Loze’ was opened in SaintSorlin-d’Arves.

1967 After two years of construction work, on December 31st 1967, there was the grand opening of Le Corbier. With the cooperation of promoters, councillors and inhabitants, the

resort became fully established. Three ski lifts were opened, allowing access to the summit of Mont Corbier. 1988 The Ormet chairlift was installed in Saint-Colombandes-Villards.

…From the first connections… 1969 The first fixed grip chairlift (La Chal) was installed in Saint-Jean-d’Arves, allowing access to the summit of the Pralud Ridge. There were also plans to connect it up with the neighbouring ski area of Le Corbier resort.

The new Gaston Express chairlift, for better connections on the Ouillon plateau To improve inter-resort connections, this detachable 6 seater chairlift will replace the double “Torret” ski lift. 4.6M € are invested in this new installation. In less than 5 minutes, skiers are able to access the Ouillon area - the lively heart of the ski area. This chairlift has been named in memory of Gaston Maulin, the founding father of the Les Sybelles ski area.

Gaston Maulin, a pioneer in Les Sybelles An emblematic character, his greatest success was making one particular leisure activity accessible to as many people as possible: skiing. Adventure which started in 1995, he acquired concessions for the ski lifts in Le Corbier, Saint-Jean-d’Arves and Saint-Colomban-des-Villards. Then in 1998, he bought the ski lifts in Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves in conjunction with the Toussiure skilift operator company SOREMET. His son Alexandre took over and is now manager of the company Maulin.ski.

1986

2000

The ToussuireCorbier connection was opened, with the commercialisation of a multi-resort skipass. Skiers could enjoy the area’s 120km of pistes known as the “Grand Large”.

The Les Sybelles brand was established, supported by a promotion office and a reservations centre marketing a unique ski area.

2002 The Col de Bellard chairlift was installed. …To the creation of the 4th largest ski area in France…

2003 The Eau d’Olle chairlift allowed a connection between SaintSorlin-d’Arves and 5 other resorts in Les Sybelles. The ski area of Les Sybelles was born!

…Heading towards the modernisation of the ski area 2005 Le Sybelles Express is a detachable 8-seater chairlift and the main one in Le Corbier. In a single climb, it allows access to the other Les Sybelles resorts. 2015 The detachable 6-seater chairlift,

Charvin Express in Saint-Jean d’Arves. This chairlift allows you to quickly and conveniently reach Le Corbier, taking skiers directly from the snow front to the rest of Les Sybelles. 2017 At Ouillon summit: an immense 15-metre long structure was installed #Sybelles. The same year, the Vikings fun area was created.

2018

2020

The detachable 6-seater chairlift Le Mont Corbier, was opened allowing access to the summit of the same name.

Inter-resort connections are facilitated and improved with the addition of the detachable chairlift the Gaston Express (see boxed text).

2019 Ouillon plateau, the central point of the ski area welcomed an area for relaxation and learning: the Snowpy Mountain, covering 600m².

2023 Les Sybelles will be 20 years old.

Heading towards

sustainable tourism Aware of the major issues relating to climate change, the Les Sybelles ski area places the environment at the heart of its actions to move towards responsible, sustainable tourism. To find a balance between making skiing accessible and respecting the environment, the operators of the Les Sybelles ski area, are committed to sustainable developments to reduce the impact of tourism.

A SKI AREA COMMITTED TO POSITIVE CHANGE Objectives and a clear vision through Challenge Zero CO² Les Sybelles has set the target of reaching carbon neutrality as soon as possible through immediate measures and bringing into action existing solutions to de-carbonise and reduce energy consumption. All of the ski area’s actions and initiatives fall in line with the ‘Challenge Zero CO²’ label. This applies to the entire Les Sybelles ski area, and everyone is encouraged to do their part to ensure the carbon neutrality challenge is met. Commitments:

Les Sybelles

An environmental observatory, for carefully considered developments

8

Within the scope of restructuring the ski area, in 2015 an environmental observatory was put in place. It allowed a general analysis to be carried out of the 1,550 hectares of the Les Sybelles ski area, with an inventory of all of the built heritage, fauna and flora. This tool is permanently being developed and it allows all environmental elements to be taken into account when implementing a modernisation plan or an expansion project in the ski area.

ia a partnership with a green energy V provider, at Les Sybelles, the energy consumed is certified as 100% renewable.

hen replacing ski lifts, those with W slow motors are opted for, allowing a 5% reduction in energy consumption and acoustic emissions. raining in eco-operation is given to T chairlift operators via digital tools, allowing the speed of the mechanism to be varied. ptimised management of grooming O and artificial snow production via a connected solution allows a 5% reduction in water consumption. ess hours spent grooming the slopes L reduces the consumption of fossil fuels. By choosing to keep the freeriding pistes in their natural condition, the ski area can reduce its fossil fuel consumption.

Support for the Nebeday charity Les Sybelles works in conjunction with “Les amis de Nebeday” charity in Senegal. This year, 50,000 trees were planted around the houses in Senegalese villages. Over 8,000 Senegalese children took part in and followed this educational programme, making them more aware of the environment and climate issues.

SUSTAINABLE PROJECTS IN THE RESORTS Moving towards greener accommodation with an eco-label To promote an ecological transition for everyone, the “Quality Accommodation in Les Sybelles” label has evolved and includes new ecological criteria. Now hosts who have a green energy supplier and install flow-reducing aerators on all of their taps in the apartments they manage will be entitled to apply for this label.

The MMV Étoile des Sybelles residence in Le Corbier is the first apartment block to be entirely built from modular blocks. The entire hotel complex is the largest 100% modular 3D wooden project in Europe with 8 floors and a surface area of 10,000m². Thanks to the expertise of Ossabois and their industrial off-site manufacturing process, this tourism residence will be composed of 99 apartments and suites, corresponding to 310 modules with lounges and entertainment rooms, wellbeing and relaxation areas, as well as a swimming pool. This is a real laboratory of modular construction on the resort and the off-site manufacturing process, combined with renewable materials, allows for a 30% reduction in CO² emissions, compared with classic construction methods. Furthermore, the modules were built in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region’s factories, allowing the materials used to be optimised and a reduction of 30 to 40% in waste. The project’s wage portage falls in line with its sustainable vision. This apartment block is designed to be run as a developing business.
