A Message from Edgar Did you know… • Every day in America, another 27 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes • More than 9 people are killed in the US each day as a result of distracted driving When you think about it, those facts are staggering. Because my law firm helps injury victims and their families, our attorneys and staff see first-hand the devastation caused by drunk driving and distracted driving. That’s why we invest significant resources to spread the “Don’t Drink and Drive” and “Don’t Text and Drive” messages. Among the community projects we sponsor, we launched the Edgar Snyder Words to be Heard Scholarship Contest in 2007. Since its inception, we’ve awarded 63 scholarships totaling over $86,000 to western Pennsylvania area high school seniors. Not only does the contest help to fund college educations, but it raises awareness of the underage drinking and distracted driving epidemics. We believe teens are one of the best resources to discourage their peers from making poor choices. So we asked seniors to submit creative projects designed to prevent drunk driving or texting while driving. The seven winners should be very proud of their accomplishments, having been chosen from over hundreds of entries. As I do every year, in May I was honored to meet the winners of our 2013 Scholarship Contest. These talented students traveled from all over western Pennsylvania to accept their awards at a dinner we held in their honor. I see why there were so many impressive entries – because this was such an exceptional group of young adults who not only exceeded academically, but who were actively involved in helping others. I invite you to visit our website, EdgarSnyder.com/scholarship, to check out the “Words to be Heard” from this year’s winners. You can also learn more about the scholarship contest and help to make a difference by signing our Safe and Sober and Don’t Text and Drive pledges. Our law firm will continue to bring attention to the tragedies caused by distracted driving – whether it’s by alcohol, drugs, texting, cell phones, or anything else that impairs your safety behind the wheel. If you know a high school senior who would like to enter the 2014 Words to be Heard Scholarship Contest, please pass along the information provided in this packet. And please – drive safely. Sincerely,

Attorney Edgar M. Snyder *Sources: NHTSA FARS data, 2012; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention, 2013)
