Advancing Minorities’ Interest in Engineering (AMIE) celebrates 30 years of Achieving Diversity through Sustainable Partnerships. 30 years later, it is ever more important to continue to invest in the critical and emerging needs of our HBCU Schools of Engineering, government and corporate partners. Our immediate goal is to prepare AMIE for even greater success by delivering capable and qualified engineers to take on the challenges of this dynamic space.
Collaboration, innovation and agility are extremely critical attributes for our national and global footprint. We must be intentional on what we will deliver in terms of talent, research capabilities and ensuring a strong partnership with our partners. Our (16) ABET accredited Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Schools of Engineering partners continue to graduate 30% of all African American engineers in the United States. We want to ensure this successful partnership continues to enable the AMIE Partners to increase its impact and influence to deliver on our mission.
AMIE is committed to:
• Focusing on the enhancement of research capabilities by conducting a thorough review of its strengths and future needs
• Looking internally at our governance model and enhancing it to meet the needs of our partners and institutions

HistoricalOverview
In1981,PresidentRonaldReagan,underExecutiveOrder12320,establishedtheWhiteHouseInitiativeon HistoricallyBlackCollegesandUniversities,whichexpandedthepreviousprogramandsetintomotiona governmentwideefforttostrengthenournation’sHBCUs.
In1989,PresidentGeorgeBushsignedExecutiveOrder12677.ThisexecutiveorderestablishedaPresidential AdvisoryBoardonHistoricallyBlackCollegesandUniversitiestoadvisethepresidentandthesecretaryof educationonmethods,programsandstrategiestostrengthenthesevaluedinstitutions.
In1993,PresidentWilliamJeffersonClintonsignedExecutiveOrder12876.Thisexecutiveorderrequiredasenior levelexecutiveineachagencyhaveoversightinimplementingtheorder,andthattheOfficeofManagement andBudgetbeinvolvedinmonitoringimplementationoftheorder.
OnFeb.12,2002,PresidentGeorgeW.BushsignedExecutiveOrder13256.Thisexecutiveordertransferredthe WhiteHouseInitiativeonHistoricallyBlackCollegesandUniversitiestotheOfficeoftheSecretarywithinthe U.S.DepartmentofEducation.Previously,theWhiteHouseInitiativewashousedintheDepartment’sOfficeof PostsecondaryEducation.
OnFebruary26,2010,PresidentBarackObamaSignedExecutiveOrder13532,toadvancethedevelopmentofthe Nation’sfullhumanpotentialandtoadvanceequalopportunityinhighereducation,strengthenthecapacityof historicallyblackcollegesanduniversitiestoprovidethehighestqualityeducation,increaseopportunitiesfor theseinstitutionstoparticipateinandbenefitfromfederalprogramsandensurethatournationhasthehighest proportionofcollegegraduatesintheworldbytheyear2020.

ABOUT
Advancing Minorities’ Interest in Engineering (AMIE) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to expand corporate, government and academic alliances to implement and support programs to attract, educate, graduate and place underrepresented minority students in engineering and computer science careers.
The outcome of an initiative by Abbott Laboratories in 1992, AMIE represents a coalition of industry, government agencies and the ABET accredited Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Schools of Engineering who see a diversified workforce as a competitive advantage and an essential business need.
The (16) ABET accredited Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Schools of Engineering represent less than 3% of all the Engineering Schools in the country, yet they produce over 30% of all African American engineers in the United States. Approximately one-third of African American graduates in Science and Engineering are also produced by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). One quarter of PhD recipients in Science and Engineering received their undergraduate degree from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Thus, the HBCU Schools of Engineering are a great resource pool for minority engineering talent.
AMIE acts as
• A catalyst that forges Industry-Government/Academia partnerships that support programs to advance minorities interest in engineering,
• A promoter and encourager to minority students to pursue engineering careers,
• A facilitator for the recruitment of minority students for co-op, intern and full-time opportunities at member organizations,
• An avenue for members to exchange “Best Practices” and “Solutions” for the development of a diversified engineering workforce, and
• An enabler for the creation of Engineering Research/Technology transfer agreements.

INSTITUTION
Reflecting its heritage as a traditional 1890 land-grant institution, Alabama A&M University (AAMU) functions as a teaching, research and public service institution, including extension. AAMU is a dynamic and progressive institution with a strong commitment to academic excellence. The serene, intimate campus is situated on “The Hill,” only a short distance from downtown Huntsville; the site of the school’s founding. Alabama A&M University has four colleges with 41 Baccalaureate, 23 Master’s, 1 EdS and 4 doctoral degrees offered.

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering has about 2500 students and 100 faculty members. Academic offerings include bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs across five academic departments.
INSTITUTION
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) was founded as the State Normal College for Colored Students. On October 2, 1887, it began classes with fifteen students and two instructors. Today, FAMU is the premier school among public Historically Black Colleges and Universities. FAMU remains the only HBCU in the twelve-member State University System of Florida. The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering in the state’s capital city of Tallahassee is jointly administered by Florida A&M University and Florida State University.

Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) is the second oldest public institution of higher education in the state of Texas. Founded in 1876, the land- grant university is a part of the Texas A&M University System. The university’s main campus is located at the city of Prairie View approximately 40 miles northwest of Houston. There are also two outreach campuses within the city limits of Houston. The university’s enrollment now exceeds 9,000, including more than 2,000 graduate students. INSTITUTION
Virginia State University (VSU) was founded in 1882 in Petersburg, Virginia. It is one of Virginia’s two land-grant institutions and was the first state-supported four-year institution of higher learning for Black Americans in the U.S. With a current student population of approximately 4600, VSU offers fifty undergraduate and graduate degree programs, two doctoral degree programs, and seven certificate programs. Students study and conduct researches in one of the seven colleges: the College of Agriculture; the Reginald E Lewis College of Business; the College of Education; the College of Engineering and Technology; The College of Humanities and Social Sciences; the College of Natural and Health Sciences; and the College of Graduate Studies.
