BRIEF

As product designer, we are constantly reengineering the existing world around us. For this project we were required to upscale an injection molded plastic shell of an electrical product. T hen to reconstruct it from sheet ABS plastic.

DESIGN RATIONAL

I choose to vacuum form the shell because of the complexity of the curves.

T hen I was able to compare it to my teammate’s reconstruction of their shell.

T hereby determining where the bosses and other features would be positions to ensure the internal components would alight. T he original product had a satin textured finish, and I achieved to replicate this by spraying from a further distance allowing the droplets to form before touching the surface of the product.

CO N STR A INT S

In the vacuum forming of the shell, I realised what the limitations where of the process to accurately pull all the detail of the mold into the shell. In future I will prefer to build in this detail at a later stage instead. It is also advisable to allocate a controlled area to any newly sprayed products. T his is to prevent smudging of the paint while it is still wet.

Next Steps

I learnt much about the vacuum forming process and mold making, by visiting people in industry. I will be using these techniques in the future to ensure a smoother and faster produced mold.
