WELCOME TO FAIRFAX COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS! On behalf of Fairfax County Public Schools we want to welcome you from around the state to the 2011 Virginia High School League AAA State Wrestling Tournament being held at James Robinson Jr. Secondary School. Wrestling is one of the states oldest high school interscholastic activities and this tournament annually brings together the best from around the state. This year is no exception; everyone has worked very hard this season to make this another marquee event and we appreciate the support demonstrated by your attendance. High school interscholastic athletics is a true laboratory for learning, practicing and evaluating skills in goal setting, self discipline, hard work and self control. National studies repeatedly report that participation in athletics is a key indicator of success later in life. Your participation either on the mat or in the stands is truly appreciated. Thank you to the athletes and parents for the time and effort put into making this a successful season. Thank you coaches, administrators and certified athletic trainers who help guide young athletes. And thank you to all the spectators whose attendance is so critical to the success of these programs. We would also like to give special recognition and thanks to the staff of Robinson Secondary School and to the Virginia High School League for the time and effort they have put into organizing and hosting this year’s event.

2011 WRESTLING

To all participants, wrestlers, coaches, cheerleaders, we extend to you our best wishes for a safe and successful tournament. To our spectators and guests, cheer loudly and loyally and in a manner that best represents your school, your community and for high school sports. Mr. Observer is a writer and fan of Virginia Wreslting, he has written numerous blogs and actively participates in forums that serve to assess the talent in the state of Virginia and beyond. Mr. Oberserver does not represent the VHSL, nor Robinson Secondary, his views are his own and will hopefully serve to entertain and provide insight into the respective weight classes at this years AAA Wrestling Tournament. Returning State Champions

103 Best 1st Day Match-up – Bryce Gentry vs. Gabe Gibson. What’s not to like when 2 of the top 4 in the state go head to head just minutes into the tournament? Key Semifinal Match-up – Cam Anderson vs. Connor Maenez. In what should be one of the most anticipated semifinal matches of the day, Anderson and Maenez are ranked 1 and 2 in the state respectively. Sleeper – Connor Maenez. If anyone has a shot at knocking off Cam Anderson, this freshman might just be the one to pull it off

112

1. Gabe LaVey – The returning state champion has a score to settle with Brooks Martino before he can think about a second title. Martino edged LaVey 8-6 at the Beast of the East tournament. 2. Cody Allala – Can this junior turn the hat trick and claim his third title in three years? 3. Ross Burbank – Not only is he looking for his second straight title, but the fourth Burbank title in a row for Cox high school.

Best 1st Day Match-up – Michael Hayes vs. Brett Campbell. Both wrestlers bring big match experience into this quarterfinal battle and have lost close matches to Dallas Smith. Should be tight throughout the match. Key Semifinal Match-up – Cam Timok vs. Dallas Smith. Can Timok’s strength help overtake last year’s state runner-up? Could be the first of many battles on a state level between these two.

2011 WRESTLING

Sleeper – Brett Campbell. Having already demonstrated the ability to wrestle Dallas Smith tough, if he can get the momentum rolling in the neutral position, he could go all the way.

119

Best 1st Day Match-up – Robert Dooley vs. Dennis Gustafson. Both took close, low scoring losses to Jake Smith. Now they face each other with the opportunity to use this win to catapult themselves into a finals rematch. Key Semifinal Match-up – Jake Smith vs. Connor Mairena. Smith took a 3-0 victory over Mairena back in January. Mairena has a shot at payback on a much larger stage. Sleeper – Dennis Gustafson. Has Gustafson learned enough from his tough loss to Smith at the Beast of the East to bounce back for a state championship?

10

5 Candidates for Outstanding Wrestler 1. Brandon Jeske – If he pulls off the championship, will people admire his ability to win or already expected it? 2. Gabe LaVey – A second title in as many years would mean he overtook Brooks Martino to get there. 3. Cody Allala – Very rarely do we see four time state champs in progress. Another win could bring the OW to the Central Region 4. Bryce Barnes – Having already won handily against most of the competition, his wins could stand out. 5. Ross Burbank – Heavyweights rarely receive this award. He could if he claims a second straight title.

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT PREVIEW Best 1st Day Match-up – Dane Harlowe vs. Tyler Misuna. Both wrestlers encountered a tough loss at regionals. As a result, two of the top 5 in the state square off in the first round.

125

Key Semifinal Match-up – Zac Isenhouer vs. Jack Bass. Bass is on a mission this postseason, having disposed of Dane Harlowe 12-2 in the regional final. Isenhour though, has been tested throughout the season with tough opponents, and could play the role of spoiler. Sleeper – Tyler Misuna. Seemingly a better wrestler than a 3rd seed from the Eastern region, his side of the bracket sets up nicely with tough, yet winnable matches. Best 1st Day Match-up – Santiago Valdez vs. Dillon Knight. Valdez is dangerous enough to make the semi-finals. However, he will first need to get by a tough, gritty opponent in Knight.

130

Key Semifinal Match-up – Jordan O’Donnell vs. Marcelle McCabe. Hard to see who can come out of the bottom two matches between Holcroft-McCabe & Hairston-Majano. However, I feel McCabe could sneak into the semi-finals and give O’Donnell a run for his money. Sleeper – Jordan O’Donnell. Using the strong showing in the regional final against a state runner-up, his side of the bracket is less daunting. Don’t be surprised to see him in the finals.

4 Potential Action-Packed Semifinals 1. 103lb – Cam Anderson vs. Connor Maenez 2. 112lb – Cam Timok vs. Dallas Smith 3. 135lb – Gabe LaVey vs. Brooks Martino 4. 160lb – Scott Reilly vs. Wes Jones

Best 1st Day Match-up – CJ Jablonski vs. Rory Renzi. A

second round match-up that could easily determine the finalist from this side of the bracket.

135

Key Semifinal Match-up – Gabe LaVey vs. Brooks Martino. As I mentioned before, this rematch will be one of the most anticipated matches of the weekend. Sleeper – Rory Renzi. You lose 1-0 to the number one ranked kid in the state and people take notice.

1. 125lb – Between Dane Harlowe, Tucker Proffitt, Buddy Scarborough, Zac Isenhouer, and Tyler Misuna; who really knows who will make it out of that logjam. 2. 140lb – Gary Woods II, Jacob Kingett, Zach Kechter, Will Hays, and Beau Donahue all have a shot to make the finals. 3. 152lb – Without Blake Roulo, this could fall into the laps of Tevin Cooke, Tanner Tinsley, Lucas Rider, Justin Spyers, or Tanner Ketcherside.

140

Key Semifinal Match-up – Beau Donahue vs. Gary Woods II. Donahue earned a 5-2 victory over Woods II at the Super 32. However, there were some tense moments were takedowns could have gone either way. I see another 5-3 type match coming, but who comes out on top? Sleeper – Jacob Kingett. Tough and dangerous, he has what it takes to not only make the finals, but pull out a victory as well.

11

2011 WRESTLING

3 Most Unpredictable Weight Classes

Best 1st Day Match-up – Will Hays vs. Jacob Kingett. If Hays can make it past a tough second round opponent, he will run into a determined Kingett. Hays though, no slouch in his ownright, will keep this very interesting.

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT PREVIEW 145

Best 1st Day Match-up – Ryan Forrest vs. Brandon Smith. Smith, who is a regional runner up should give Forrest a tough match initially. Forrest could pull away late, but not without a fight. Key Semifinal Match-up – Alex Turley vs. Henry Carlson. Carlson comes into this tournament as a favorite. However, Turley is as dangerous as anyone in this tournament with regards to a momentum swing during a match. Sleeper – Kevin Johnson. If you look at his margin of victories against quality opponents, you can see that he has what it takes to make the finals.

152

Best 1st Day Match-up – Konbeh Koroma vs. Tony Leonardi. Even though he has struggled some of late, Leonardi is a tough as nails competitor who could surprise the Northern Regional Champion. Key Semifinal Match-up – Tanner Tinsley vs. Tony Tevin Cooke. This match could ultimately decide the state champion and we’ll see it in the semis. Cooke looked impressive en route to a Northwest Regional title. Question is has Tinsley secured enough mat time this season to be ready?

3 Finals matches I would love to see 1. Austin Coburn vs. Hunter Adams, 171lb – Both wrestlers were state finalists a year ago. This evenly matched duo could be the highlight of the finals. 2. Jacob Kingett vs. Beau Donahue – Donahue won an exciting 13-10 match earlier this year. A rematch could be even better. 3. Taylor Horner vs. Ross Burbank – The two best heavyweights in the state going at it? What’s not to like?

Sleeper – Justin Spyers. The winner of the East Region has as good of shot as any on there side of the bracket. A finals appearance would not be out of the question in this wide open weight class.

160

Best 1st Day Match-up – Cody Allala vs. Patrick Budd. Patrick Budd has come along way since last year, and has looked very strong over the course of the season. He is one of few who can give Cody a good match.

2011 WRESTLING

Key Semifinal Match-up – Wes Jones vs. Scott Reilly. Reilly doubled up Wes Jones 4-2 when they wrestled last month. Another fantastic match appears on the horizon.

171

Sleeper – Scott Reilly. Reilly seems to be the one who wrestles Cody the closest, losing 8-3 to him in the semis at the Beast of the East tournament. Could the State’s number two ranked wrestler meet Cody in the finals? 5 Teams Who Will Compete For The Team Title st

Best 1 Day Match-up – Alex Gowers vs. Ricky Foreman. The Eastern Region runner up will match up with the third place finisher from the Northwest Region. Which is not your typical third seed. Gowers will give Foreman a run. Key Semifinal Match-up – Austin Coburn vs. Nolan King. King was rolling through the Northwestern Region tournament when an injury derailed the outcome of the finals match. Can he bounce back this week and give a much anticipated difficult match to Coburn?

Sleeper – Nolan King. King is a talented wrestler who could keep Coburn from representing the Central Region in the 171lb finals.

12

1. Cox – Jeske, Carlson, and Burbank are just the tip of the depth this team possesses as they take nine to the state tournament. 2. Westfield – Top half of their lineup will score some major points for them. Nine wrestlers will ensure a top five finish. 3. Colonial Forge – Balanced throughout their lineup, they could finish high with at least seven out of eight wrestlers capable of placing. 4. Robinson – Also balanced throughout, they have four (out of nine) weights where they are favored to have a finalist. 5. Hanover – With the potential for two state champs, can the remaining six wrestlers fill in through the wrestle-backs?

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT PREVIEW Best 1st Day Match-up – Logan Jackson vs. Austin Akins. Early on in the season, it didn’t seem like this weight class had a lot of depth. Low and behold though an entertaining quarterfinal match pitting the Central Region champion against the runner-up from the Northwest Region. Both are talented wrestlers capable of finishing in the top four. The loser has a longer road ahead though.

189

Key Semifinal Match-up – David Reck vs. Luke Barney. Barney, coming off a tough 2-0 loss to Bryce Barnes, will use that narrow loss as motivation for a rematch. First up though, the number 2 guy in the state. Sleeper – Luke Barney. Can he put it all together and make it an all Eastern Region final? David Reck will be tough to take down. But Barney is the most qualified on that side of the bracket to do so. Best 1st Day Match-up – Ali Musa vs. Zac Blackwell. The Central Region champion will have his hands full with Musa. Musa is a tall, strong kid who seems to keep every match close despite the opponent. Blackwell meanwhile is a runner-up at the Marine Corps Ultimate Challenge.

215

Key Semifinal Match-up – Justin Tribble vs. Austin Dickey. Both the Northwest Regional champion and the Eastern Region runner-up would make a great semifinal, as both of them eye a spot in the finals. Sleeper – Austin Dickey. With Musa, Blackwell, and Hankins on the other side of the bracket, Dickey could squeeze by into the finals “if” he can get by Tribble. Best 1st Day Match-up – Danny Davis vs. Taylor Horner. The Northwest Region champion will have his hands full with Davis. Who is a tough compact wrestler who gives up size, but not heart. The state’s number two wrestler in Horner will test the will of the states number three ranked wrestler.

285

Key Semifinal Match-up – Ross Burbank vs. Keenen Hughes. Hughes lost a tough 5-1 victory to Horner in the regional final. However, he could bounce back here though and test Burbank. That is if he can hold off one of the four talented heavyweights from the Eastern Region. Sleeper – Taylor Horner. One of the very few wrestlers with the size, strength, and leverage to give Burbank a run for his money. Burbank is a smart wrestler, so if Horner can limit his mistakes, the title is his.

2011 WRESTLING

In Conclusion, I predict this will be a mixed bag of State tournament wrestling. Some weight classes have a clear cut predicted winner, while others are a toss-up. We all know that anything can happen, which is the beauty of sports. So enjoy the preview as you take in the wrestling this weekend….

Rules, Scoring, and Signals

15

AN OVERVIEW OF WRESTLING RULES The object of the sport of wrestling is to put your opponent on his back -- to pin your opponent. A pin (or fall) is when you put your opponent on his/her back with any part of both shoulders or both shoulder blades of your opponent in contact with the mat for two seconds. When you pin your opponent, the match is over and you are the winner. If nobody gets pinned, the winner is the wrestler who has scored the most points during the match.. There are five ways to score points in a wrestling match: 1) Takedown - (2 points) You score two points for taking your opponent down to the mat and controlling him/her. 2) Escape - (1 point) You score one point for getting away or getting to a neutral position when your opponent has you down on the mat. 3) Reversal - (2 points) You score two points when your opponent has you down on the mat and you come from underneath and gain control of your opponent. 4) Near Fall (Back Points) - (2 or 3 points) You get near fall points when you almost but not quite get your opponent pinned. A near fall (near pin) is when... both shoulders are held for two seconds within four inches of the mat, or... one shoulder touches the mat and the other shoulder is at a 45 degree angle coming down to the mat, or... the wrestler is held in a high bridge or back on both elbows. If a near fall lasts for two seconds, you get 2 points. If a near fall lasts for 5 seconds, you get 3 points. 5) Penalty Points - (1 or 2 points) Your opponent is awarded points if you commit the following infractions. Illegal Holds - There are several holds that the referee will penalize you for without warning. (There are other holds called "potentially dangerous holds" which the referee might make you let go of but will not penalize you for). Technical Violations Going off the mat or forcing your opponent off the mat to avoid wrestling ("fleeing the mat.") Grabbing clothing, the mat, or the headgear Locked or overlapped hands: If you are down on the mat in control of your opponent, you cannot lock or overlap your hands, fingers or arms around your opponent's body or both legs unless you have met criteria for a near pin of your opponent, or your opponent stands up and has all his/her weight on two feet, or you have lifted the opponent off the mat.

2011 WRESTLING

Leaving the mat during the match without the referee's permission Figure 4 head scissors from the neutral position. Reporting to the mat not properly equipped or not ready to wrestle, or equipment that is detected as being illegal after the match has started Unnecessary roughness Unsportsmanlike conduct Flagrant Misconduct (ejection, the match is over) Stalling (you get one warning before you are penalized and points are awarded). Incorrect starting position or false start (You get two cautions before points are awarded). The first and second time you are penalized, your opponent is awarded one point. The third time you are penalized, your opponent is awarded two points. The fourth time you are penalized, you are disqualified. (Except for illegal starting position or false start - you are cautioned twice, then one point awarded for each infraction, but you will not be disqualified. In the event of Flagrant Misconduct, you are ejected from the match on the first offense, you lose the match, and 3 team points are deducted). TEAM SCORING AND SUDDEN VICTORY TEAM SCORING IN TOURNAMENT COMPETITION Below is the team scoring chart in tournaments this year: Tournament Team Scoring Chart Advancement Points: Championship Bracket - 2 points (Regular Decision) Consolation Bracket - 1 point (Regular Decision) Major Decision: 1 point Technical Fall: 1 1/2 points Fall, Default, Forfeit, & Disqualification: 2 points Bye followed by a win: Championship Bracket - 2 points Consolation Bracket - 1 point Tournaments with Four Places: First Place - 14 points; Second Place - 10 points; Third Place - 7 points; Fourth Place - 4 points. Tournaments with Six Places: First Place - 16 points; Second Place - 12 points; Third Place - 9 points; Fourth Place - 7 points; Fifth Place - 5 points; Sixth Place - 3 points.

Tournaments with Eight Places: The first six places are the same with 2 points for Seventh Place and 1 point for Eighth place.

SUDDEN VICTORY IN DUAL MEETS AND TOURNAMENTS Sudden Victory (Overtime Period): During tournament and dual meet action, when the wrestlers are tied at the end of the three regular periods, they will then wrestle an overtime period which will be one minute in length with no rest between the regular match and the overtime. The overtime period will begin with both wrestlers in the neutral position. The wrestler who scores the first point(s) will be declared the winner. If no winner is determined by the end of the one minute overtime period, 30-second tie-breakers in the referee's position will be wrestled.

2011 WRESTLING

Tiebreaker I: The disk is tossed to determine the wrestler who has choice. The wrestler who wins the toss may choose top, bottom, or defer (Neutral cannot be chosen). Wrestler B wins the toss and selects down. As soon as the referee blows the whistle, Wrestler B scores an escape. At this point, the match continues to the conclusion of the of the thirty seconds. Before the end of the first tiebreaker, Wrestler B also scores a takedown. The score at this time is Wrestler B: 4 and Wrestler A: 1. Tiebreaker II: It is now Wrestler A's choice; he also selects down. During the second tiebreaker period, Wrestler A likewise scores an escape and a takedown. The score is tied 4 to 4. Ultimate Tiebreaker: At this point, Wrestler A is given the choice of position because he scored the first point (an escape) in the match. However, the wrestler whose opponent has received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at anytime during the match will have the choice of position. The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty will supersede the first points scored in the regulation match. There is no neutral, but the wrestler may defer. The Ultimate Tiebreaker winner is determined the same as in the past. The wrestler who scores the first point(s) in this 30-second tie-breaker will be declared the winner. However, if no scoring occurs during this time, the top wrestler will be declared the winner. If Wrestler A rides Wrestler B; Wrestler A wins with the ride out point. If Wrestler B scores, Wrestler B wins. From: National Federation of State High Schools Association http://nfhs.org

Falcons Flying High The 2009-10 Frank W. Cox Falcons soared to new heights capturing their first team title since 1986 in impressive fashion. The Falcons, coached by Matt Small, brought the Virginia AAA team title back to the Eastern Region for the first time since 2006. Leading the way for the Falcons were five AAA Champions including Ross Burbank, Connor O’Hare, Ben Dorsay, Bryan Whitt and Caleb Richardson. The Falcons placed three other wrestlers for an incredible total of eight medalists at the state tournament including Michael Chalfant, Dashon Eure, and Cody Stageburg. The Falcons held off charges in the quarters and semis from teams like Hopewell, Westfield, Kellam, and Robinson to put six wrestlers in the finals and ground out matches in the wrestlebacks that ultimately allowed them to lock up the 2010 team title. Congratulations to all of the Frank W. Cox wrestlers, coaches, staff, parents, and administration for winning the AAA Virginia Team Title! 20
