City administrator gets retroactive raise BY TOM STANGL TSTANGL@THEAMERYFREEPRESS.COM

After a series of closed door meetings to discuss Amery City Adminstrator’s Darcy Long’s performance, the city council voted 5-1 Wednesday to give him a 2.5% pay increase. Alderman Tim Strohbusch cast the lone dissenting vote. The pay increase is retroactive to June 15, 2016 and Long is under contract to the city until April of 2018. Long’s performance evaluation was the topic of at least five closed sessions dating back to June 1, 2016. The topic was discussed at the regular July council meeting as well

as a special council meeting July 14, where the statute used to justify the closed session changed from “considering employment, promotion, compensation or performance evaluation” to “consider dismissal, demotion or discipline of any public employee.” Before Wednesday’s meeting, the last time Long’s performance evaluation was discussed by the full council was Aug. 22. The statute used to justify the closed session returned to “considering employment, promotion, compensation or performance evaluation.” Mayor Kay Erickson, who did not SEE RAISE PAGE 2

Officials from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) held a public information meeting Thursday to answer questions on a proposed road diet that would span the entire length of Amery’s Highway 46, from York Park on the North to Snow Street on the south. Sixteen community members and business owners were in attendance. A ‘road diet’ would reduce Amery’s four lanes of traffic down to three; one lane in each direction with a center left turn lane, leaving the footprint and width of the road untouched. The nearest similar project happened in Barron several years ago. Amery’s design would also include features like a bike lane and curb bump-outs at downtown crosswalks. During the meeting, held at City Hall, DOT officials offered a brief presentation on the plan, including a video demonstration of what traffic flow would look like before and after a road diet implementation. Several business owners expressed concern over the bump-outs and any reduction in parking, which DOT officials said was an optional part of the design. Speaking on behalf of snowplow drivers, Assistant SEE DIET PAGE 2

City forms new ‘Tourism Commission’ BY JESSICA DE LA CRUZ EDITOR@THEAMERYFREEPRESS.COM

In accordance with laws set forth in Act 55, the City of Amery formed a state-mandated tourism commission last week. Added as a ‘New Business’ item to the agenda, the new would be responsible for recommending the city’s Room Tax rate, and partner with a designated local non-profit to spend 70 percent of those funds toward tourism-related activities. The council was given short notice to review the details of the new commission, and began a lengthy discussion as to the new group’s makeup. By statute, the commission must be

made up of four to six members. City Administration proposed to the council would include the City Administrator, the City Clerk-Treasurer, one hotel/motel representative, and the President and Past-President of the Amery Community Club. It was proposed that the city would then partner with the local Amery Community Club as the non-profit of choice. A lengthy discussion ensued over the six members. Alderwoman Julie Reimenscheider voiced frustration over the discussion. “I feel like this is sloppy and maybe we should not vote on it tonight. To get it written the way it should be, and then it can come up at the next SEE TOURISM PAGE 2
