CLIMATE: Kanabec County in Minnesota has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Average July temperatures range from the upper 70s to low 80s, while average January temperatures range from the low teens to mid-20s. The area typically receives around 34 inches of precipitation each year, almost evenly spread throughout the seasons. However, there can be significant monthly differences in rainfall amounts with August being the wettest month and December being the driest month of the year. Snowfall is also abundant in winter months, while spring and summer months tend to have very little snow.

MORA CITY GOVERNMENT
The City of Mora, Kanabec County, Minnesota, is located 72 miles north of Minneapolis and St. Paul at the intersection of Minnesota Trunk Highways 65 and 23. It is also 52 miles northeast of St. Cloud and 91 miles southwest of Duluth. Mora is the crossroads of East Central Minnesota. Mora is a sister city to Mora, Sweden, where the Dala Horse originated.
CITY HALL is located downtown at 101 Lake Street South. All city services operate out of this building and are staffed weekdays from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Mora residents are represented by the Mayor and four council members. City council meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month. The city also has several committees that are composed of council members and city residents. These committees serve in an advisory capacity to the council and are one of the most effective ways for citizens to influence city policies and activities.

Welcome to Ogilvie.
I’m Mayor Mark Nilson and I would like to welcome you to Ogilvie! We are a small town of about 375 people located at the junction of Minnesota Highways 23 and 47 just 20 minutes south of Lake Mille Lacs.
We are the home of our “famous” concrete water tower that was built in 1918 and still stands today in our city park. It is also listed on the National Registry of Historic Sites.
We also consider our town a great place to live with a small town atmosphere. We are very proud to still be able to have our own public school system for K-12 and look forward to keeping it for many years to come. We are also the central hub for Federated Co-op, a large feed, seed, fertilizer and fuel supplier for east central Minnesota that continues to expand in our town.
We are proud to have several other small manufacturing businesses that are also a vital part of making our town a great place to live. We also are very fortunate to have two bar and grills that offer great food and service to the community and to anyone just passing through, and we also have an excellent cafe located right along the highway. Two convenience stores and a Dollar General store are also part of Ogilvie for all your day-to-day needs.
There is a plan in progress to build a six building, four-unit-each townhome development on the old school lot for anyone wanting to move to Ogilvie, and the Tower View mobile home park is also going to be expanding their housing.

The City of Ogilvie, Kanabec County, Minnesota, is located 68 miles north of Minneapolis and St. Paul at the intersection of Minnesota Trunk Highways 23 and 47. It is also 42 miles northeast of St. Cloud and 103 miles southwest of Duluth. The city was named for Oric Ogilvie Whited, a local landowner, according to “Minnesota geographic names; their origin and historic significance,” by Warren Upham.
OGILVIE CIVIC CENTER is located on North Hill Avenue. All city services operate out of this building. Several different groups also meet regularly in the Civic Center. Residents in Ogilvie are represented by the Mayor and four council members. City council meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month.

THE OGILVIE WATER TOWER built in 1918, is on the National Registry of Historic Sites. Constructed of concrete, the water tower still stands in the city park and was featured among several other unique Minnesota water towers in a story featured on WCCO-TV and CBS News Weekend. The water tower was replaced by an up-to-date version in the late 2000s, but the old tower is still celebrated every year at the city’s Back to the Tower day.

Every January, a group of volunteers gathers in Ogilvie to begin planning its city celebration: Back to the Tower Day.
Usually held the first weekend of August in downtown Ogilvie, the celebration includes the same enjoyable activities each year, such as the firemen and kids waterball fight, the craft fair and vendor booths.
The event also includes a parade through Ogilvie’s city streets featuring several of the classic vehicles that are part of the car and tractor show. The parade is a big hit for all kids who enjoy the candy and other treats handed out by groups, organizations, businesses, fire departments and others who participate.
Back to the Tower Day was first held in 2011, when the old Ogilvie water tower was deactivated and the new tower went online. A ceremony shutting down the old tower was held prior to the parade, and the parade route ended at the new water tower, where a ceremony turning the new one on occurred. One of the constants since that first event is the dedicated team of volunteers who meet each month to discuss what activities it wants to retain and which it wants to swap out. Although the toilet races are a thing of the past, other events have proven to be tried and true.
For instance, in 2020 the Mora Area Chamber of Commerce started its Fired Up At The Tower BBQ Cook Off. The contestants cook up a mess of ribs, turn their ribs in for judging, and then the event opens to the public immediately after.
As in other years, the Ogilvie Museum is open all day of the event, and Back to the Tower Day wraps up every year with a street dance featuring music performed by a local band.
Although the focus on the water towers is no longer a major part of the event, the presence of non-profits, volunteers and organizations coming together to create a successful event is why the celebration exists in the first place.

Vasaloppet MORA
For more than 50 years, the Vasaloppet has brought thousands of cross-country skiers to the city of Mora to race.
The idea for the first race, held in 1972, began with the “Trade and Commodity” sub-organization of the Mora Commercial Club. That group asked the Mora Jaycees to sponsor a winter project that would publicize the community and tie in with the Dala Horse and Sister City program. The Commercial Club, Jaycees and the Kanabec Conservation Club were the first sponsors of the race.
The Vasaloppet is traditionally held each February and includes — in addition to the races — a week filled with activities, including bingo games, the Kanabec County Art Association Vasaloppet Art Show, a pasta feed, the Paradise Theatre Radio Show and A Taste of Vasaloppet craft beverage tasting event. But it’s the skiing that brings people to Mora, both as participants and spectators. Typically, more than 1,000 racers participate in the skiing, including the Vasa Freestyle, the Dala Freestyle, the Bellringer, Team racing, the Classic and the Half Classic. A Miniloppet for kids is also scheduled.
At the heart of the event are the volunteers. An estimated 500-plus Kanabec County residents take part in the planning and running of the event. From creating race packets to selling merchandise to serving blueberry soup, it takes a village of volunteers to make the annual event a success.

Fair KANABEC COUNTY
The Kanabec County Fair has been one of the largest events in the area for more than 125 years. Operated under the auspices of the Kanabec County Agriculture Society, more commonly known as the “fair board,” the annual event includes many activities each year as when it first started.
Among those activities are the exhibitions, many which come from the county’s various 4-H clubs. The fair is an opportunity for 4-H members to showcase their talents and skills they have gained throughout the year. Members exhibit their livestock, artwork, or science projects, among others.
According to the fair board, 4-H classifies youth into two categories: Cloverbuds and regular 4-H members. Cloverbuds are youth who have completed grades K through 2. Their educational experiences are focused on fun and learning. All Cloverbud exhibitors earn the same multi-color ribbon for their efforts.
Regular 4-H members are youth who have completed grade 3 through one year past high school. Their learning is focused on mastery under the guidance of screened volunteer leaders.
Regular 4-H members earn white, red or blue ribbons and have an opportunity to earn Reserve and Grand Champion ribbons as well. Youth earning the higwhest achievements and meeting eligibility requirements may also qualify to advance to regional and state showcase experiences, including the Minnesota State Fair, Minnesota State 4-H Horse Show, State 4-H Dog Show and Northeast Livestock Show.
Those individuals who are not involved in 4-H can exhibit through the fair’s open class, showing their animals, arts and crafts, and other works.
The fair traditionally includes a parade. Businesses, individuals and musical groups participate in the Saturday activity, all done in celebration of the county. A carnival featuring games and rides is always a huge hit, as are the grandstand events including tractor pulls and the ever-popular Red Neck Races. The Mora Civic Center is the site for musical groups that perform throughout the fair.

Adult Education
Sometimes, when you least expect it, life happens. For some, it happens while they are in school and cannot complete their educations.
That’s where East Central Minnesota Adult Education comes in. Adult Education offers classes to help adult learners study for and take the General Educational Development test, commonly known as the GED.
Angela Peterson, an educator for more than 20 years, teaches AE twice a week in Mora at Recovery Hope Treatment Center.
“Adults attend AE for a variety of reasons,” Peterson said. “Each person’s story is unique. Perhaps they left high school to work, they were facing mental health challenges, they had children to take care of, or were facing a personal trauma that prevented them from finishing.
Preparation for the GED is as variable as the students in the program, Peterson said.
“It depends on how much education the student was able to complete before entering our program, how long they have been out of a school setting as well as how much time they are able to commit to the program each week,” she indicated. “Although we have an online aspect to GED preparation, I have found that students who are able to spend at least some time in the classroom experience the most success.”
The GED is comprised of four parts: math – quantitative and algebraic problem solving; science – life science, physical science, earth and space science; social studies – civics and government, U.S. history, economics, geography and the world; and reasoning through language arts – which includes the ability to read closely, write clearly, and edit and understand written text.
“There is also a writing component as part of this test that requires you to write a brief essay,” Peterson said.
“We have a partnership with our WorkForce Center; Central Minnesota Jobs and Training Services, where learners can receive extra support (sometimes financial) while studying in our program,” she added. “They can also meet with career planners to discuss next steps after receiving their GED like postsecondary training or career planning.
“Adult students have a whole life outside of the classroom, and it’s important to be flexible and accommodating. You can attend GED classes online at your convenience, in the classroom, or a mix of both. The classes are free.”

The largest area of the forest located between State Highway 47 and U.S. 169 just south of Mille Lacs WMA. Located just east of Mora. This golf course offers a beautiful 18-hole championship layout that can test the skills of even the most elite players. The front nine holes allow players ample room to hit the rolling fairways, but miss any of the elevated, well-bunkered greens and bogey or worse likely.

Established in 1978 the Kanabec History Center hosts a variety of programs and exhibits throughout the year. Outdoor exhibits are open May through October. They include a 1950's caboose, 1904 Mora Fire Hall Replica, the historic Webster, Whittier and Coin School buildings.
The Kanabec History Center is situated on 37 acres along the Snake River with walking trails and picnic areas that are open to the public.
The Kanabec History Center offers many events throughout the year such as Museum Day. Watch for more information and dates in your local newspaper, or on facebook and our website.
The history center offers educational programs and workshops throughout the year. Old Tyme Country School is held every summer for three, one week sessions where children learn what country school was like in the 1920s. Children dress in costume, bring lunches and participate in lessons and games from that era.
The history center gift shop offers a selection of books, hand crafted items and souvenirs. The research library is available for genealogy research during history center hours.
The Kanabec History Center has one off-site building: the historic Grass Lake Church located on 133rd Street off of County Road 43 in Grass Lake Township. The building has been restored by the Friends of the Grass Lake Church, it is handicapped accessible and is used for programs. The Grass Lake Church, the Historic Coin School and the history center conference room are available for rent, including weddings, reunions and parties.
The Kanabec History Center is a nonprofit 501(c) (3)organization that is supported entirely through memberships and donations. Individual memberships are $35.00 and family memberships are $50.00. Family plus $60.00 membership offers discounts on rent and events.

The buses run M-F from about 7 a.m. until about 5 p.m. depending on the city.
Timber Trails Public Transit provides public transit bus service in Kanabec County. Mora/Ogilvie, Milaca and Princeton areas have daily service.
Timber Trails routes are designed around the reservations that are made. Timber Trails’ buses pick up people where they live or work. When someone calls for a reservation they’ll be asked to allow a window of time for the bus to come.
The cost for a bus ride within the community one-way is $1.50 or $3.00 for a round trip.
Rides out of the community cost $2.50 one-way and $5.00 for a round trip. Same day rides cost 50 cents more each way.

EV CHARGERS
Mora Municipal Utilities has installed two electric vehicle charging stations in the city of Mora. A DC fast charger is located in the parking lot of Coborn’s grocery store located at 710 Frankie Lane. Two level 2 chargers are located on NW Railroad Ave, by the Mora Klocka on Union Street in downtown Mora. There is a fee charged for usage of the chargers.
The DC fast chargers provide EV owners with a quick charge when they are traveling longer distances. The level 2 chargers provide a charging option for EV owners while they are shopping, dining or in town for other business.
VeteransMemorial KANABEC COUNTY
Two years.
That’s how long it took for the Kanabec Veterans Memorial to go from a plot of land to a what it is today: a visitor’s building featuring a static display of memorabilia.
The statue “Silent Battle,” for which veteran Brian Zimmerman posed, rests inside the memorial building. The sculpture portrays a grieving soldier holding the dog tags of one of his fallen peers; its intent is to show the struggle of military personnel and to raise awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder. Zimmerman lost his battle with PTSD in August 2021. Zimmerman’s mother Joyce arranged for Mohawk to donate the carpeting for the building, which was laid by Brian’s son.
An outdoor plaza features Walls of Honor marking the names of local soldiers killed in the line of duty and the names of honored veterans. The United States flag stands at attention around the walls on a 55-foot flagpole, with the flags of each of the six military branches — the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Space Force — on either of its sides.
Also found outside is a UH1B Huey helicopter — used as an air ambulance during the Vietnam War helicopter. Dave Barron, principal officer of Light Horse Legacy, a Sun Valley, Arizona-based non-profit organization arranged for the refurbished aircraft to land at the memorial plaza. Light Horse supports veterans in many facets but also restores military aircrafts in honor of Medevac 12. It places those aircraft at different memorial sites throughout the country.
This particular helicopter is dedicated to the memory of medic Stephen Schumacher of Minneapolis, killed as he exited the Medevac 12 helicopter to set up a defensive perimeter to protect their crew.
Dedication for the memorial was held Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, with more than 500 people showing up, a turnout that surprised members of Lee Goldsmith American Legion Post No. 201 and Ogilvie American Legion Post 640.
Much of the work on the building was completed by area veterans who volunteered their time and talents to get the building up. Because of the mild 20232024 winter, much of the construction was completed early on the 40-by-80foot building, under the project management of Nordenstrom Custom Builders.
The Kanabec Veterans Memorial is located at 203 Barker Street in Mora, just north of the Post Office.
The building has provided space for the American Legion, Auxiliary, Boy Scouts, Mora Area Chamber of Commers and others to meet.

Located in East Central Minnesota, Welia Health provides primary and specialty medical services to Kanabec and Pine counties residents. It is a critical access hospital and clinic system accredited by the Joint Commission.
THE BEGINNING
The opening day of Welia Health, initially called Kanabec Hospital, is illustrated in a unique story about the doors opening early for an unexpected arrival of a baby, James Michael. The hospital was scheduled to open in January of 1946, but on Christmas Eve in 1945, Mrs. Walton Regan gave birth to James Michael, and they became Kanabec Hospital’s first two patients.
HOW WE’VE GROWN
Throughout the decades, Kanabec Hospital has continuously expanded its facility and services. In 2003, Kanabec Hospital grew significantly through two major building projects, including moving the Mora Medical Clinic (then owned by Allina) to the hospital campus and adding a rehabilitation department and four-bay surgery department.
In 2011, Kanabec Hospital purchased three clinics from Allina Hospitals and Clinics (now Allina Health) located in Mora and surrounding cities, Pine City and Hinckley. Then it renamed the newly integrated system: FirstLight Health System.
In October 2015, due to new demand in healthcare services, the Pine City campus expanded its blueprint and services in diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation services, OB/GYN, orthopedics, sports medicine and urgency services.
In 2019, FirstLight Health System finished a two-year phased expansion project in Mora on its main campus. The construction project included the following:
• newly designed in-patient rooms.
• separate birth center.
• public dining area.
• an expanded rehabilitation department.
• community pharmacy.
• emergency department updates with improved helipad and ambulance access
• relocation of the off-campus Eye Care Center
• infrastructure accommodations for new technology and patient flow
• new centralized entrance to enhance security
The Mora campus has 23 licensed patient beds, a four-bay surgery suite, a 24-hour emergency department, EMT/Paramedic-staffed ambulance service and a birth center, among other services.
