Energy Auditing For Industrial Facilities

Page 1

Reducing HVAC system energy use does not involve simply turning all equipment to a lower setting. This type of action could create indoor air quality problems and health hazards, and the savings may not even be significant. Rather, smart choices in changing certain HVAC equipment and/or the way it operates can greatly improve system efficiency while maintaining or improving occupant comfort.

HVAC SYSTEMS

Heat Exchangers

A heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is a system used to condition air by maintaining proper temperature, humidity, and air quality. Properly conditioned air improves the comfort and health of building occupants. Excessive airborne dirt, heat, and humidity can cause irritation and injury to people and possible damage to sensitive equipment. HVAC systems are designed to operate at optimum energy efficiency while maintaining desired environmental conditions.

Figure 3-1. Heat exchangers allow the transfer of heat between two fluids, such as steam and air, without mixing.

Temperature Control Indoor temperature is controlled by transferring heat to or from the indoor air with heat exchangers. A heat exchanger is a device that transfers heat from one fluid to another fluid without allowing the fluids to mix. Most types of heat exchangers, also known as coils, are installed in HVAC ducts, where air is blown over the exchangers by fans. See Figure 3-1. Some types of heat exchangers are installed directly within the occupied spaces and rely on radiant heat and natural convection airflow to transfer heat.

Heating is provided by furnaces, boilers, or electric heaters. Furnaces burn a fuel, such as natural gas, and the hot combustion gases flow through a forcedair heat exchanger. Boilers supply hot water or steam that flows through heat exchangers, either forced-air or radiant types. Electric heaters produce heat from electric current flowing through resistive elements. Electric heaters are used in forced-air or radiant systems.
