World leading medical charity on your doorstep pilepsy Society, based here in Buckinghamshire, is one of the oldest charities in the UK. Locally, it is probably best known for the specialist residential care we provide for people with complex epilepsy and associated conditions.

But it may come as a surprise to learn that Epilepsy Society is also a world centre of excellence for the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, and for groundbreaking research into the condition.

Our epilepsy experts not only provide specialised care for patients from across the UK with uncontrolled seizures, often assessing them for brain surgery, but they are leading the world in groundbreaking research into the genetic causes of epilepsy.

When Epilepsy Society was founded in 1892, the word ‘gene’ had not even been coined. But today our scientists are making life changing discoveries by sequencing the DNA or genome of people with epilepsy.

By looking at the three billion letters of each person’s DNA,

they are trying to understand why seizures happen and which medications will best bring them under control. And they are working closely with Genomics England as part of the 100,000 Genomes Project.

Professor Sander came to the Society as a research fellow from Brazil in 1985 and has dedicated his life to understanding more about epilepsy and alleviating the impact of living with uncontrolled seizures.

Alongside this, our scientists are using the most sophisticated MRI scanning techniques to painstakingly map the brain, investigating both its structures and the critical pathways that allow different areas to function and communicate.

‘Epilepsy Society has a very long and rich history in Buckinghamshire,’ he said.

‘I feel very proud that we are able to continue the innovative and groundbreaking work of our founding fathers here in Buckinghamshire.”

We are using cutting-edge 3D imaging to establish whether there is a link between face shape and genetic variants which can lead to epilepsy. And a special scanning tool - optical coherence tomography - is enabling us to investigate epilepsy by measuring the thickness of the retinal fibres at the back of the eye.

Challoner’s Students Celebrate University Successes Students from Dr Challoner’s Grammar School marking successful applications to Oxford & Cambridge universities with Dan Colquhoun (Director of Sixth Form) and David Atkinson (Headmaster)

he last month has demonstrated the aspiration of students of Dr Challoner’s Grammar School past and present.

Shortly before Christmas a celebration event brought together students who left in the summer of 2018 to receive their A level certificates and to hear about the start of their journey after school. It was a joyous occasion bringing together students, their parents and school staff to celebrate the achievements and progress of the young people of our community. Hearing about the contribution students are already making to their new communities, drawing on their experiences at school, illustrated the value of an education that aims to develop the whole of an individual’s character. Statistics from UCAS, the university admissions body, show that over 90% of Challoner’s students have gone on to a university of their choosing, with Nottingham, Durham and Exeter the most

popular destinations. 21 students are studying Medicine or a related degree, while 29 students are pursuing Engineering. History, Philosophy, Geography, Economics and other humanities attracted 45 students, while Languages, Creative Arts, Law and Business were also well represented. This month, the news that 17 students have been made offers by Oxford and Cambridge universities for autumn 2019 highlighted the value of aspiration and resilience in the pursuit of excellence.

The New Yorker described her as the person who ‘invented’ interior design, and it was De Wolfe’s signature antiVictorian style that made her the trailblazing influence of the 1930s world of interiors.

Fast-forward to the present day: Google describes ‘interior design’ as the ‘art or process of designing the interior decoration of a room or building’.

What is important is not the definition, but the feeing it evokes. Enhancing the interiors of the space you live in, work in, or use as a personal retreat, will provide a healthier and more aesthetically-pleasing environment for you - and may also improve your quality of life!

In a world where social media is omnipresent, inspiration for interiors is plentiful. With one scroll or click, you have access to the most beautiful designs – the room of your dreams. But it can be overwhelming! The pressures of trying to emulate the latest fashion for your home, and coordinate design schemes on your own doesn’t come easily to everyone, especially for those who don’t have the time to dedicate to creating beautiful spaces. Hay Fever Treatment

ith spring and summer on their way, it’s not all sunshine and walks in the park – for some it means a season of suffering.

It is reported that up to 1 in 4 people in the UK are affected by seasonal allergic rhinitis – otherwise known as hay fever.

Hay fever is caused by your immune system reacting unnecessarily to certain pollens, common symptoms include an itchy nose, sneezing, runny nose and nasal congestion.Trees will produce pollen in late spring and some grasses continue to produce pollen until September meaning the season can last for many months.

The summer months are full of activity for most of us, from major sporting events and weddings, to important exams – all of which can be adversely affected by the suffering brought on by severe hay fever symptoms.

There are now a whole host of over-the-counter hay fever 10 March / April 2019

treatments available which can be used to good effect, however, around 10% of sufferers do not respond to conventional treatment so may consider a Kenalog injection to help them get through the season.

Kenalog injections – the facts • Kenalog is for the treatment of severe hay fever and should be considered as a second stage of treatment for patients who have already tried and had little relief from other forms of medication.

• A Kenalog injection does not cure hay fever, it temporarily suppresses the immune system enough to take away the symptoms in most people who need it .

• Kenalog contains Triamcinolone Acetonide which belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids (steroids) which are commonly used for many serious medical conditions Kenalog is injected in the buttock muscle and takes just a few seconds

• Not suitable for children under the age of 12 I think I could benefit from a Kenalog injection, what should I do next?

Hay Fever and Seasonal Allergies ay fever affects one in five of the population. For some it is seasonal, while for others it lasts many months, or throughout the year, when it is termed allergic rhinitis. As well as the runny nose and sneezing, symptoms may include: red and watery eyes, itchy throat, nose, ears and eyes, headache or pain around the forehead, earache, wheezing and tiredness. Sometimes there are other severe symptoms such as nosebleeds, hives and itchy skin.

The problem is an allergy to proteins in pollen from trees, grasses and other plants. Symptoms that occur away from summer or throughout the year may be caused by dust mites, animal hair, traffic fumes or plant moulds.

Although hay fever is associated with the countryside, its occurrence has been rising dramatically in urban areas. This is possibly due to increased pollution from exhaust fumes triggering an immune response.

Hay fever is also a condition where homoeopathic remedies often seem to be helpful. A combination of allium, euphrasia and sabadilla is well worth trying for quick relief of any of the symptoms. Euphrasia (eyebright) is a great remedy for sore eyes, whatever the cause, and can be found in tablets as well as eye drops.

A Vogel, a popular brand of natural, mainly herbal, remedies offer Pollinosan Hay Fever Tablets for hayfever and allergic rhinitis, and Pollinosan Luffa Nasal Spray for hayfever, allergies and allergic rhinitis.

Side effects are unlikely with any of the above remedies, and if they do occur are generally mild, but it is advised that anyone using prescribed medication, for whatever purpose, should check with a doctor or pharmacist about any possible interactions.

In most cases, symptoms may be reduced, if not banished, and comfort improved with the use of natural remedies. Probiotics are increasingly being recognised as having a role in health promotion, even for conditions such as hay fever, where there are no obvious digestive problems. Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine which can strengthen the immune system and generally helps with symptoms of the upper-respiratory tract. Taken with bioflavonoids, it has a decongestant effect and is anti-inflammatory. Various substances classed as bioflavanoids, anthocyanidins or pro-anthocyanidins may offer benefits. Amongst these are: pine bark extract, rose hips, bilberry or blueberry, grape seed extract and quercetin, which, combined with bromelain, is a useful natural anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory. Pycnogenol (pine bark extract) is a potent anti-inflammatory, with anti-histamine actions, and is well researched and now widely used for hay fever.

Studies link vitamin D deficiency with allergies and asthma. Vitamin E and B complex vitamins may have a role too. Some people find that consuming a small amount of pollen throughout most of the year helps with symptoms. Local honey is popular for this, though pollen and Swiss hayflower capsules are available, and may produce similar results.

You have to be more ‘intuitive’ when it comes to marketing and you have to be at the ‘top of your game’. There is no room for complacency or leaving the portals to sell your property for you. It is about creating a strategy for each of the properties. There are still lots of people out there trying to buy, sell and rent property with positive activity in the market.

So if you decide to sell or let your property in this market? The most important thing is to find a progressive estate agent, one which is prepared to put in the extra work needed to find you a good-quality buyer and progress your chain forward to a successful completion. Don’t be afraid to ask the important question: ‘What is their strategy for getting you sold or let?’.

Meet Caroline Jones, Councillor and Mayoress of Amersham aroline Jones elected as Councillor in 2015, and elected as Mayoress of Amersham in May 2018 who outlined her priorities as mayoress to ensure that Amersham has a strong and economic focus continuing to flourish for residents and visitors alike.

The role of Town Mayoress is of great importance and responsibility as well as supporting various functions on behalf of Amersham Town Council, Cllr.

Jones has a role on a number of Council and Community committees. She is committed to the work of the Bensheim Friendship Group – maintaining and improving our already excellent relationship with our Twin-town in Germany.

Caroline will continue to promote Amersham as a Centre of Excellence for business, local communities, organisations and the residents. Residents and businesses are welcome to contact

Amersham Museum is now open for 2019!

e have lots of interesting and exciting projects taking place this year. One relates to our work with older people, Reminiscence at Home.

Amersham Museum has been involved with reminiscence work for some years. However, it is not always possible for people to get to the museum, so we have started a new programme of delivering reminiscence at home to people who may be more isolated.

This involves visiting people over a period of 6 to 8 sessions to recall their life stories and help them record this in a booklet, which can contain photos, documents and anything that helps tell their story.

This will then be printed and bound into a small booklet which will be available for people to share with family and friends thus ensuring those memories are kept alive.

We are looking for volunteers who like listening and would enjoy helping someone create a life story booklet. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and to be part of a community project, 14 March / April 2019

where you can help others and have a real sense of achievement too. Training and induction will be given, covering all necessary information relating to the role. Ongoing training and support will be available throughout the project.

ost teenagers use some form of social media and will have a profile on a social networking site. Many visit these sites every day and a vast majority of teenagers are very smart when it comes to using social media - often smarter than their parents!

Social media is a term for online sites that people use to contact others to form social networks. Some of the most popular platforms include Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, Instagram, Skype, YouTube and Snapchat. Gaming chat sites are also popular ways for children and teenagers to connect with others who share their particular gaming interests.

Social media and online communications is here to stay and will attract children at even younger ages. It is hard to predict the path it may take in the future and parents, educators and professionals working with children need to understand 18 March / April 2019

In my opinion an outright ban will rarely work. Social media is becoming increasingly embedded in apps, games and websites and even learning environments, making it very difficult to control. Trying to ban it might tempt your child when he’s away from school, making it even more difficult to control.

It is important to be aware what children do online.

Try not to ‘snoop’ but stay involved in a way that makes your children understand that you respect their privacy but want to make sure they’re safe.

Tell your children it is important to: * Treat others with respect, never post hurtful or embarrassing messages.

Ensure that they know that they must and can always tell you about any embarrassing or bullying

* Teach children not to share anything on social media that they wouldn’t want you, their teachers, or possible future employers to see. * Privacy settings are important. Go through them together to make sure your kids underdstand each one. Also, explain that passwords are there to protect them from things like identify theft. They should never share them with anyone, be it girl/boyfriends, or best friends. * Make a simple rule - if you don’t know them, don’t befriend them.

I fall in love with Stoke Park every time I catch a glimpse of the majestic Mansion standing proudly amongst the cedar trees”. It is not one of the seven wonders of the world, but it is certainly one of the wonders of Buckinghamshire!

Stoke Park Club Mansion sits in 300 acres of parkland, with lakes, a championship golf course and is home to the Boodles Tennis Tournament - a warm-up for Wimbledon with many famous tennis stars practising. Stoke Park and its grounds has been the location for several major films, including James Bond’s Goldfinger, Tomorrow Never Dies, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Layer Cake and recently for Alan Sugar’s The Apprentice aired on the BBC last year.

Stoke Park was designed by James Wyatt between 1788 and in 1791 and in 1908 it became the first Country Club and Hotel in the UK. Humphry Repton was commissioned to upgrade Lancelot “Capability” Brown’s landscaping and a luxurious restaurant was named after him and became ‘Humphry’s Restaurant’. We were pleased to be invited to dine in this 5-Red Star-rated dining room.

A friendly smile greeted us as we entered the President’s Bar. We were impressed by the luxury and ambience. If only 24 March / April 2019

the walls could talk, they would have many a story to tell! The restaurant manager, Gabriel, chatted to us as though we were old friends and made us feel at home. Although I am an ‘awkward’ gluten-free (GF) eater Gabriel reassured me that I could order most things on the menu and they would adjust the meal for my requirements. We were at ease viewing the menu reclining on the sofa - a very civilised way of ordering. We ambled into the dining room, mainly occupied by couples seated next to one another, rather than opposite, which I always find rather formal. Soft and

non-intrusive music in the background helped create a pleasant ‘buzz’ to the room.

We were both delighted Chris Wheeler was in the kitchen.

You might have heard of him Executive Chef who has been wowing guests and food critics over the past 25 years winning Hotel Chef of the Year, best at serving over 250 covers (how does he do that?) and Chef of the Year in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire Life Food and Drink Awards in 2016.

His culinary accolades don’t stop there. In 2017 he was appointed UK Ambassador for the Quality Standard Mark Beef and Lamb Scheme and he raises a lot of money for charitable causes. This year, Chris will be travelling to Tokyo, cooking at Japan’s most prestigious food festival to showcase British Beef and Lamb.

We were quite ravenous by now, and for starters my companion had ordered Game Consommé, Wood Pigeon Croquette, Button Mushroom and Truffle Mayonnaise, which was intense and very meaty.

He loved the croquette - very savoury with pepper tones.

The pink champagne sorbet palate cleanser was a refreshing breather before the ‘pièce de résistance’ !

I had Pan Fried Scallops, Humphry’s Black Pudding (GF factor) Roast Celeriac and Textures of Apple. The scallops were cooked to perfection, melting in the mouth and were a perfect accompaniment with touches of slightly-sweet apple and a tender celeriac crunch.

The wine list was extensive and pitched from medium to more expensive. We opted for a bottle of South American Ochagavia Silvestre Merlot, 2017 - ‘supple and alluring plummy characteristics producing a soft and smooth flavour.’

I must emphasize that, booking at Humphry’s is a pure dining experience: It’s not one that can be rushed; the service is just right and no-one interrupts conversations by asking if ‘everything is all right’.

However, members of staff

are watchful in case anything is amiss.

There are six main courses to choose from - two fish, three meat (duck, venison and beef) and a vegetarian option. My companion opted for the duck, medium rare. It had a fine glaze on the skin that was so tender it melted in his mouth (I had a taste - :) ) With the duck came curly kale, deep-fried crackles that exploded in the mouth and a juice that was not too rich. Interestingly, the duck was accompanied by rhubarb, a refreshing change from plum, and works much better! It had a refreshing tang.

My Pan Roast Stone Bass, Smoked Haddock and Mussel Veloute, roast Grelot Onion and Chive Oil was delicious. This was a very light meal, which I prefer to meat when dining in the evening. The fish was soft

We both appreciated the dessert: Baked Passion Fruit Cream, Compressed Pineapple Coconut and Mint Sorbet was superb. My companion loves crumble, and said his Pear Soufflé Crumble with Crème Anglaise and Blackcurrant Ice-Cream was absolutely fabulous - the best he’s ever had. Foodie Heaven!

Even though Stoke Park is a private-members club, Humphry’s is open to anyone between Thursday and Sunday, from 7pm 10pm. A three-course meal costs £68 per person; exceptional value for exquisite food in breathtaking and opulent surroundings. An experience that is priceless.

The Orangery is also open for Afternoon Tea and Champagne Afternoon Tea. A perfect treat for Mother’s Day? Reservations Essential for both Humphry’s and The Orangery.

Reminiscence in the Museum Amersham Museum runs a Reminiscence group at the Museum once a month on a Monday from 10.30 for an hour. The dates for these are: 1 April, 13 May, 3 June,1 July, 9 Sept, 7 Oct, 4 Nov, 2 Dec. £2 donation for refreshments. All are welcome, no need to book.

Amersham’s Women at War March is Women’s History Month and we are marking this with our HLF supported Amersham’s Women at War project. We have been researching women who supported the war effort in WWI and the campaign for women’s suffrage. We have found out lots of fascinating information about local women and we will soon be publishing this in a new book.

We are using the research to produce a changing exhibition about our local women – with different women featured throughout the month, as well as a programme of talks, arts and crafts and an open day.

ho does not know where these words come from? Planning a traditional wedding is an art and most of us expect it to be unique, so all the thought, planning and preparation we put into it is to make perfect a very special day indeed.

Make a Will - always a good time! will not ask you about your new year’s resolutions, but with Spring in the air and all its positive vibes, now is as good a time as any to think about making those Wills you’ve always put off.

Making a Will allows you to leave clear instructions about how your estate is to be distributed, choosing those who are to receive from you and those you want to administer that all for you (your executors). Most importantly, perhaps, you take control for your loved ones.

According to one source, it has been suggested that more than half of parents in the UK with children under 18 have not made a Will. People tend not to link the thought of guardianship for their children with sorting out who gets what of their possessions in the event of their death. Yet children are of course more valuable than any possessions.

A Will can be used to nominate who should look after your children if the worst happens to you by appointing a guardian. If both parents die without having appointed a guardian, it may be left to the courts to decide with whom your child will spend their most formative years. At worst it may lead to family disputes at a time already fraught with emotional distress.

A Will makes it much easier for your family or friends to sort everything out when you die. Without a will the process can be more time consuming and stressful.

Finally, a Will can help reduce the amount of inheritance tax that might be payable on the value of the property and money you leave behind. Inheritance tax is currently charged at 40% on the net value of your estate above the relevant tax-free thresholds. Net value means that debts and liabilities are deducted.

Affordable Healthcare Plan for your Pets

By making small monthly payments you can ensure your pet will receive treatment immediately for any accident or illness.

Being part of The Wheelhouse Healthcare Plan entitles you to receive 25% discounts on recommended vaccinations, spaying, castration, dentistry, flea and worm treatments.

The Healthcare Plan is for cats, dogs and rabbits, which allows you to budget for their veterinary care. By making a small monthly payment to The Wheelhouse Healthcare Plan, you ensure that you will not have to pay any veterinary bills, other than an initial excess (£95), for each illness or accident.

The plan is not an insurance policy that covers members for third party liability.

With Spring in the air it is time to start thinking about outdoors and the garden. It’s the perfect time of year to prepare your compost heap, providing you - with minimal effort - with free top soil within six or more months.

Here’s the quick and easy method: With or without a compost bin, start a pile of browns (twigs, dry leaves, shredded paper, animal bedding) on soil, then layer with any greens (think vegan diet only grass cuttings, uncooked fruit & veg, tea and coffee grounds). Repeat, always finishing with a layer of greens. This heats up the heap quickly, breaking down woody material while getting air into the heap with layering. Once ready, it looks like moist soil, crumbly, dark with some twiggy bits. Adding compost improves soil structure, reduces the need to water, encourages healthy plant growth & saves on fertilizers.

To use, mix roughly in wheelbarrow with a spade, then put around your plants. For containers, mix 50/50 with garden soil.

Remember, the rest of your food waste should go in your brown bin.
