A note from Executive Director
Shannon Schneeman When America SCORES New York opened its doors in September 2001, we could have never imagined the road that we'd take to get to this point. Then, we were offering after-school programming with 200 young people in Upper Manhattan with the hopes of partnering with public schools throughout the city. Today, we partner with 25 schools throughout Harlem, Washington Heights, Inwood, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. Through our partnership, our poet-athletes have the opportunity to play soccer games all over NYC’s parks, share their poems in historic corners like the Lower East Side’s Nuyorican Cafe, and exemplify leadership, teamwork, and commitment in their schools and around their communities. While we have spent so much of this last year still learning how to navigate this new world, we've been an available resource to all of our young people who were doing the same. And while our year included obstacles and setbacks, we've maintained our vision for the future alongside the youth of New York City. As we continue to plan for that future, it’s become more important that we center social justice when working with youth. Youth development organizations are experts at helping youth improve selfesteem, academics, and community engagement and, at ASNY, we firmly believe that it’s important to provide young people the space to understand, evaluate and reimagine their world. One of the most important pieces of this is that the adults in their lives -- their parents or guardians, teachers, coaches -- partner with them in a genuine way to achieve their vision of social justice and to make the changes they want to see in their community, city, and world. We are committed to continue that partnership with our poet-athletes and we are hopeful for a future in which all people will stand alongside us in our pursuit of equity, justice, and opportunity for youth across New York City.

Amplifying Diverse Voices Throughout this year, America SCORES New York renewed its commitment to elevating the organization through the inclusion of a variety of voices and experiences at all levels. With our newly expanded Leadership Council and the inaugural year for the Committee for Racial Equity and Social Justice, ASNY is hopeful that this new structure will continue to center equity, diversity, and leadership.
Leadership Council Throughout the last year, ASNY has been restructuring the organization’s leadership to create more formal ownership for more staff members in their positions through a Leadership Circle. Growing the ASNY team is an important step in the 2030 Vision Strategy, which was launched in 2019 as a roadmap for becoming one of the leading organizations for social change in NYC, using the three platforms of sport, poetry, and civic engagement.
Committee for Racial Equity and Social Justice Our Committee for Racial Equity & Social Justice works to ensure ASNY’s mission for racial equity and social justice is realized and embodied by each member of the organization across departments. We hope to increase organizational capacity by restructuring the leadership of the organization with the intention of creating a staffing structure that allows multiple members of staff to have more ownership in their positions as well as creating new on-ramps that intentionally focus on bringing in members of the communities we serve into the highest positions of leadership.

America SCORES New York MISSION STATEMENT America SCORES New York seeks to create equitable opportunities for young people to experience sport, express themselves and inspire positive change off the field and outside the classroom. Using a social justice youth development framework, we emphasize racial equity, fair play, teamwork and youth voice as key drivers of building a better, more equitable New York City.
STATEMENT FOR RACIAL EQUITYAND SOCIAL JUSTICE As a youth development organization operating in New York City, ASNY recognizes its responsibility to stand against all forms of oppression. We strive to model the racial equity we believe should be present throughout society by working to ensure all stakeholders are united in our commitment to racial equity. We firmly believe no family or child should be denied access to quality after-school programming due to the color of their skin. Furthermore, we seek to create opportunities for NYC's young people to address problems of race throughout the city by giving them a place to reimagine a more just society through soccer, poetry, and civic engagement.

OUR IMPACT IN 2021 Like many nonprofits, America SCORES New York faced an array of challenges throughout the 2020-2021 school year. Despite the adversity our young people faced, ASNY managed to continue partnering with and committing to our poet-athletes.

2021 Highlight:
Block Party Poetry This unique first-time collaboration, a partnership made possible by New York City Open Streets and the NYPD, brought young people from 10 schools throughout Upper Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx to asphalt stages across their communities for the first time since February 2020. With incredible spoken word performances by ASNY poet-athletes and professional guest poets, it was the perfect way to close our National Poetry Month and welcome our poet-athletes back into the #springSCORES season!
Program Highlight:
Coaching for Change Academy Coaching for Change Academy seeks to address youth needs linked to poverty, lack of job opportunities, school absenteeism, lack of safe space, and gender inequality by providing programming that enhances young people’s quality of life. Through a Sports Based, Social Justice Youth Development framework, our youth coaches act as assistant coaches for ASNY Elementary and Middle School teams throughout the year. Over the course of the year, youth coaches built relationships as both a mentee and a mentor, explored their own identity and thought critically about how life experiences may shape them as a coach. They focused on how healing-centered engagement could be used to help coaches and lead young people in in-person and digital spaces, developed professional skills, create connections and made a difference in our communities. And since over 20% of our first class of youth coaches are alum of ASNY programming, they're already familiar with our focus on teamwork, leadership and commitment. With monthly professional development sessions, weekly check-in’s and direct coaching opportunities, 83% of our inaugural class of Youth Coaches showed growth in their capacity to envision a positive future and st a path forward to achieve their dreams. Upon graduation of our 20 inaugural youth coaches, 88% reported an increase in confidence and reported positive growth as a leader.
