A tale of two Kirbys

A

hing happened on the way to crowning this year’s “Readers’ ” 2010 Grand Champion. e way it works. Once we narrow down the list of finalists, I make some phone calls to make sure the potential winners are still in business, haven’t sold the truck, and, most importantly, don’t mind being photographed for the cover of American Trucker. One in particular, Kirby Martin’s classy 2003 Peterbilt 379, caught our A case of eye, so I called the owner to confirm mistaken identity the aforementioned details. Yes, Kirby was still in business, and he was more than willing to be put on our cover … but he’s never owned a Peterbilt 379. Huh? Well, it turns out there are two Kirby Martins living and working not more than 100 mi. apart. Our winner, Kirby Martin, lives in Yorks Springs, PA, just north of Gettysburg; Kirby L. Martin lives over in Navron, PA, but drives a slick 1998 model Kenworth W900L (one you can view in the “Readers’ Rigs” section of the November issue, by the way). Both Kirbys shared a good laugh with me, relating that a local trailer shop mixed up their repair bills once. (Thank goodness I’m not the only one that got them confused!) I think, though, the reason I’m telling you this story is because it ends with laughter on all sides. No yelling, arguing or any other type of negative emotion that all too often seems to be the fallout these days when things go wrong. We shared some humor, followed by wishes of “good luck” and “safe travels” for all concerned—an ending very appropriate for the season, I think. AT

Flexibility comes to truck financing

Don’t ignore your customers

I

F

lexibility is becoming an extremely critical aspect of commercial truck financing. That’s because both fleets and their lenders are being compelled to seek financial solutions that take into account changing freight cycles. “We’re really not seeing changes to basic truck financial products; what we’re experiencing are changes in how they are applied,” Geoff Robinson, director of sales, marketing & remarketing for Daimler Truck Financial USA, an arm of Germanybased Daimler Financial Services, told American Trucker. “What we’re seeing is a much greater need for more flexibility in financial arrangements, such as payment holidays, season payment plans, and the like, items now negotiated up front,” Robinson explained. The need for more flexibility is driven by cash flow, and that has become a real challenge to manage for many fleets, large and small, said Robinson. That, in turn, is leading many lenders in the trucking market to rework traditional financing plans, be they lease, rental, or straight commercial loans, into packages that take into account the new volatility of the freight market. As a result, lenders are reworking traditional financing structures to help fleets take advantage of short, sharp positive market upticks, pointed out Juergen Rochert, vice president of Daimler Truck Financial USA. “For example, we’ll give a customer funding trucks through us 90 days until the first payment is due so they can have an opportunity to

Flexibility in financing is becoming more commonplace today. gain two to three months of freight revenue [from the equipment],” he explained. “That’s a financing structure that allows the fleet to build up cash flow.” Robinson added that Daimler Truck Financial is also altering its used-truck rules to account for the growing dearth of late-model, lowmileage equipment on the market. “In the short term, we’ve seen 70% of our loan applications centering on used trucks as customers seek lowercost equipment,” he said. “In the past, we only used to lend on used equipment with no more than 250,000 mi. Now we’re allowing up to 400,000 mi. We had to acknowledge the demand for used trucks and so we had to modify our approach.” Daimler’s Rochert added that such changes are only possible through more frequent communication with customers. “We’ve been out in the market more frequently now with customers, monitoring the business trends they are seeing, working with those that are proactive with us in explaining their needs in relation to market dynamics,” he noted.

f you ignore your truck’s maintenance needs, it will eventually stop. The same holds true with customers. It is easier to keep the customers you have than it is to find new ones. This doesn’t downplay the need to continually beat the bushes for new customers. But like your truck, if you ignore your current customers, they, too, will stop coming back. You can only make a first impression once. So after you’ve spent all that time and energy to land a quality shipper with decent-paying freight, the first thing you need to think about is how you’re going to separate your carrier from the crowd. What can you do to provide that positive, unforgettable “wow” factor that tells your customer two things: First, these truckers mean business; and second, I can trust them to take excellent care of our products. Think of what would impress you, then crank it up several notches. According to studies on the subject, you have just 30 sec. to make a good first impression. In business, this can mean the difference between losing a customer or landing and keeping one for a long time. Remember, it costs less to keep a customer happy than it does to find a new one. new heavy-duty line of clutches being introduced by Eaton Corp. for Class 7 and 8 trucks improves upon the designs of the models being replaced and can also be retrofitted to older-model trucks, the company said. “We’ve designed our new Advantage Series (Easy Pedal Advantage and Solo Advantage) not only to replace our previous clutch models, but to be backward compatible as well,” noted Tom Rohlwing, manager of engineering programs for Eaton’s global clutch and aftermarket business. “No special tools or significant technician training is required for the new Advantage Series, and it can be retrofitted into the slots fitting our previous clutch models,” he added. The Advantage Series has a 33% stiffer casing, 50% wider thrust pad, and a three-zerk lube system to help extend the lubrication intervals. Douglas Scheffel, manager of product strategy and business devel-

Easy Pedal and Solo manual clutch models it’s replacing. Rohlwing noted the lubrication interval in linehaul applications is being doubled to 50,000 mi. for the Advantage clutch. On the aftermarket side, both models get two years of coverage from date of sale for linehaul and vocational operators alike, Eaton noted. www.eaton.com

Survey: Load boards add up

S

maller fleets that rely heavily on load boards earned $800 more per truck per month compared to those that use the freight matching services less frequently, according to the TransCore 2010 Carrier Benchmark Survey. Revenues for all carriers this year are up by about $1,500 per truck per month, or 11.4%, compared to 2009, the survey states. Of the 525 carriers surveyed by TransCore, 87% have fewer than 50 tractors and 60% fewer than 10. It defined frequent users of load boards as those who obtain 40% or more of their loads from the boards. In addition to its fleet management, tracking and logistics services, the company operates the Loadlink load board in Canada and TransCore 3sixty in the U.S. “There is a myth that carriers don’t need to use load boards when freight is abundant,” said David Schrader, senior vice president, TransCore Freight Business Services. “But this survey calls that into question. Thousands of small carriers use our services as a kind of 24/7 sales department that helps them compete with larger carriers that have inhouse sales staff.” The benchmark survey also reported that frequent load board users averaged $0.03/mi. more revenue, 309 more loaded miles, and 4.2% fewer empty miles per truck per month than less frequent users. www.transcore.com

The scrap dilemma

J

years ago, there were approximately 1 billion res in stockpiles across the United States. Besides ious health hazards that are associated with stagater (a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes), the risk of disease and tire fires led the government and industry to aggressively reduce the number of tires in stockpiles by finding alternative uses for them. As a result, the total was to just over Fleets should look reduced 100 million tires by year 2007 even for ways to recycle the though 300 million tires were rubber products scrap generated in that particular year. As it stands today, there are a number of products made from recycled tires, one of which is rubber chips used for mulch. The benefits of using rubber chips as mulch range from the longevity of the mulch (which is often more than 10 years) and the fact that water is not retained (it goes straight to the soil). While crumb rubber used on athletic fields has received unwarranted negative attention over the past few years by the media, studies conducted by the tire industry and the government have revealed that there are no health risks associated with this particular use of recycled rubber. Scrap tires can also be turned into rubber asphalt, which is another useful product. Unlike standard paving materials, rubber asphalt has been shown to expand and contract without the cracking that comes with normal freeze and thaw cycles. It’s also been shown to reduce road noise and water spray as a result of the porosity of the material. Unfortunately, rubber asphalt requires special equipment and extra attention to detail. And since the first generation of this product did not perform at

16 American Trucker/ erem /DDecember 1 0 r2 b c 2010

the same level as standard asphalt, many government highway officials are still reluctant to give it a try. But the most popular use of scrap tires is tire derived fuel, or TDF. TDF is widely used by cement kilns as an alternative to coal and other energy sources because it is more economical and efficient. Millions of tires are kept out of landfills and tire stockpiles because they can be cut up into pieces and used as TDF without any processing. It’s basically a win-win situation for everybody involved, except the EPA, which is trying to reclassify scrap tires in order to require companies that use TDF to utilize scrubbers and other technology that reduce emissions. If the EPA is successful, industry experts predict TDF will cease to be an economical fuel alternative, leaving millions of scrap tires without a home. Fleets are already saddled with scrap tire disposal and recycling fees because tire dealers and retreaders are forced to pay licensed haulers to dispose of them. And there is still no guarantee that the licensed hauler won’t dump the tires illegally and leave the dealer (and possibly the fleet) in the middle of a Superfund cleanup. While recordkeeping should offer some level of protection, it can have the opposite effect when the government starts looking for responsible parties to pay for the cleanup. Trucks cannot move without tires and when the casing is ultimately removed from service, it has to go somewhere. Fleets can do their part by searching for ways to incorporate recycled rubber products into their everyday operations and by encouraging government officials to do the same. AT

l with the last of the emisions being instituted, manking at every method possing engines running cleaner, longer and cheaper. That quest is made easier by today’s modern filters. Cellulose is one technology being used. The most common natural material employed in oil filters, it is inexpensive (and it absorbs water too), but with high restriction can’t provide long-term filtration. Synthetic media, on the other hand, is made from glass fibers or various polymers, or a combination thereof. The Cummins Filtration StrataPore oil filter uses polymers as a base, layering the special material so that each section screens out progressively smaller particles. This process increases the overall filtration efficiency. It also increases capacity as well. “More and more people are looking toward longer oil change intervals,” said Brian Tucker, engine oil filtration product manager at Donaldson. “They’re looking to do more with less, as well as going green and being environmentally friendly. With that extended oil change interval ... the oil has to be able to maintain its lubrication properties, and the filter must match up with that oil life.” Donaldson offers its Endurance filters, which can carry double the contaminants of standard filters and are designed to last as long as synthetic or other premium extended drain oils. Its Endurance Plus filters offer a one-step process to extend all API-approved oils, including standard mineral grade oils. A built-in concentrated additive is cali-

Fram Heavy Duty offers three types of filters for fleet environments. The Fram WearGuard oil filter meets specified OEM recommendations for regular oil change intervals. Built from cellulose media, the filter has super-sturdy spiral center tubes to keep media from collapsing during use. The WearGuard HD has highly efficient media, reducing 98% of particles at 20 microns, the company says. The durable filter meets extended oil drain intervals, helping lower costs. The WearGuard TRT combines the best features of previous filters with embedded additives designed to neutralize oil acidity, limit oil oxidation, and maintain or increase oil change intervals. Its formula helps EGR engines meet or beat Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards for lower soot and NOx levels. Luber-finer says its new field-tested Zgard 9750 heavy-duty spin-on bypass filter holds soot below 3% for 300 hrs. With its double stacked design and a blend of cellulose and synthetic media, the filter is said to pull out particles smaller than 1 micron. Wix Filters claims that its filters capture 45% more dirt than competitive brands in SAE testing. The company says that its silicone anti-drainback valve keeps oil in the filter so the engine doesn’t start dry. Because the silicone stays flexible, it doesn’t harden and leak.

s trucking companies and other industry service providers prepare for annual insurance reviews and renewals, it’s important to understand the different coverages that are available. Insurance covers both the expected and unexpected items businesses face every day. It is also one of those expenses that can be difficult to understand for most truckers, yet vital to have the correct coverage. The idea is to have the perfect balance of insurance types to cover the greatest financial risks your operation faces.

Too much insurance adds more costs, making you less competitive; not enough insurance and one incident can have devastating financial consequences. In this month’s article, we’ll discuss inland marine coverage, such as cargo insurance, and other optional coverages designed specifically for trucking companies. ◗ Cargo insurance: This policy guards against loss from legal liability for damage to goods or merchandise in your trucking company’s care, custody and control in the course of transit. This policy is normally triggered by a bill of lading. It is important to look at policy provisions with regard to coverage for storage in transit. age if the goods or merchandise are being cross-docked and not on the covered vehicle. If your policy has such limitations, you may need to purchase Warehouseman’s Legal Liability coverage. Cargo insurance is required under the Motor Carrier Act of 1935. The policy covers the motor carrier if it is legally liable for the damage, destruction, or other loss of the customer’s property being shipped. This includes lost packages, broken contents, and stolen articles. Two types of policies are available: 1. “Scheduled-based” lists specific trucks to be covered in which the property may be damaged or destroyed. 2. “Reporting-based” covers all of the insured’s trucks, with no trucks listed specifically. This coverage is included on the reporting policy, which in essence covers all operations of a motor carrier. The report-

Picking the right engine oil

With so many choices, it’s no longer as simple as which brand of 15W-40 to choose BY DAVID CULLEN, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR 24 American Trucker/December 2010

I

t’s the desire of oil companies to provide lowerviscosity multi-grade products alongside their conventional 15W-40 oil—which probably still accounts for something close to 90% of the market per one oil supplier’s estimate—that is driving the arrival of more synthetic blend and full synthetic motor oils for use by any type of truck fleet operating anywhere.

The main reason for this is not to ease cold start-ups, but to boost fuel economy and provide a more stable lubricant, able to resist chemical breakdown to protect for longer periods between drains in both today’s costly new engines as well as all heavy-duty diesels now on the road. Ultimately, whether a trucker will regard a given full or semi-synthetic low-vis—or a mineral-oil based one for that matter—as the right choice will largely rest on how well his oil supplier details the features of their lubricant offerings and the specific advantages each may deliver in actual use. Forrest Lucas, president of Lucas Oil, argues against getting too excited about the synthetic component of premium motor oil. “A synthetic or a mineral base stock is just a carrier for the additive package,” he contends. “Synthetic [in the base stock] is better for stability; the oil will pour better in cold weather and [will perform] better in hot” operating conditions. “But synthetics are not a cure-all because the base stock is not as important as the additive package,” he continues. “We formulated a 5W40 [synthetic] ourselves and tested it in our own trucks last winter and switched back [to 15W-40]” because he was not impressed with the results. “I do constant R&D here myself,” Lucas adds, “and I am always testing formulations” with synthetics and without.

Go to

Offering a distinctly more positive view of synthetics is Mark Betner, product manager-heavy-duty lubricants for Citgo. He maintains that growth in the product category of motor oils formulated with semiand full-synthetic base stocks is being driven by “greater acceptance of low-vis oils by both fleets and engine makers because the quality of these oil products can contribute measurably to fuel economy and offer other benefits as well.”

LOW-VIS BENEFITS “Awareness by fleets of low-vis oils is growing,” he continues, “especially thanks to the greater exposure 10W30 formulations of various brands have been getting in the past year. Whether as a mineral oil or as a synthetic blend product, 10W-30 is being positioned for the fuel economy benefit it delivers. That’s due to its lower viscosity reducing the energy consumption of the engine. ” Betner notes that Citgo offers 10W-30 formulations that use either a mineral oil base stock or a partially synthetic one. “These products might resonate with a fleet buyer because of the fuel-saving potential and because they may be available in the same price range as 15W-40 products.” As for 5W-40 motor oil, Betner says using a fully synthetic base stock makes the most sense from a chemical perspective. “Both a 10W-30 and a 5W-40 will offer a fuel-economy

advantage over a 15W-40 of anywhere from half a percent to three percent,” he points out. “But there is an issue with using 10W-30 for some fleets because one engine maker [Detroit Diesel] does not yet list this low-vis multi-grade as meeting their requirements.” According to Betner, since both a 10W-30 and a 5W-40 can boost mpg in the same percentage range, what tips the scale performance-wise for the lower-vis product is that it will protect engines across a wider operating temperature band—from -22°F to 122°F. “That feature decreases maintenance costs and lengthens equipment life,” he continues. “One engine manufacturer rates the lowest operating temperature for 15W-40 at 15°F. So going from there down to -22°F with the 5W-40 equals a 37-deg. difference. And since the 5W-40 oil will flow at much lower temperatures, it provides the cold-start capability, which also reduces stress on starters and batteries, as there is less amperage draw during start-up. That is the distinct advantage provided by a fully synthetic 5W-40 product—along with the potential for longer drain intervals. And while one engine maker does not yet accept use of a 10W-30, they all say yes to using 5W-40 oil.”

FUEL-ECONOMY GAINS Jim Gambill, direct marketing specialist for Chevron Lubricants, points out that the company’s new Delo 400 LE 10W-30 oil has demonstrated a 1% fuel economy improvement over 15W-40 oils and—very remarkably— a 0.5% fuel economy improvement over 5W-40 grade synthetic lubricants. “The use of this 10W-30 also does not come at the expense of engine durability,” he says. “Chevron conducted extensive lab and field durability tests that prove the product provides

American Trucker/ erem /DDecember 1 0 r2 b c 2010 25

wear levels and oil drains fleets have come to expect from leading 15W-40 motor oils.” Concurring somewhat with Forrest Lucas’s view that synthetics are not the be-all and end-all of oil technology, Gambill says “more semisynthetics are coming on the market and synthetics have their place, especially for cold starting and running trucks in high ambient temperatures. But what’s really the story is the trend to low-vis oils,” not necessarily how they are formulated. Our focus is on the performance attributes of our products, not detailing the base oil stocks in them.” That view is borne out by how Chevron describes what it calls its proprietary ISOSYN technology, which was applied to formulating the new 10W-30. “ISOSYN combines highly refined base oils with advanced additives to create products that rival synthetic lubricants in critical performance tests while maintaining costs similar to mineralbased oils,” explains Gambill. “This technology makes synthetics and synthetic blends unnecessary from both cost and performance standpoints in all but the most extreme operating conditions.” Long term, Gambill is convinced low-vis multi-grades will be “the way to go” for trucking. “But we have one engine maker—Detroit Diesel— that wants to see more data from us before recommending 10W-30 for their North American engines. In the meantime, that complicates the oil-buying decision for fleets [with newer engines]. As it is, 15W-40 still rules but fleets dealing with different types of engines and aging power units are showing strong interest in all types of premium motor oils.” Shell has a portfolio of mineral, semi-synthetic and full synthetic oils,” says Dan Arcy, OEM technical manager. “We are receiving a lot

Oil choices today have become complex, necessitating more communication between the trucker, their local oil supplier, or dealer. more queries on semi and full synthetic low-vis products, mainly due to their fuel-saving benefit.” Shell’s Rotella product lineup now includes the full synthetic T-6 5W-40 that he says will reduce fuel consumption by 1.5% over Shell’s own 15W-40. There are two other low-vis products, both considered semi-synthetics, the T-5 10W-30 and 10W-40. Arcy says the 10W-30 will cut fuel use by 1.6% and the 10W-40 by 0.7%.

MANY FACTORS TO CONSIDER He hastens to add that fuel economy depends on so many factors, including the duty cycle a truck is running and its driver. “Real-world” results may vary and, to begin with, be difficult to measure by a fleet. That’s why Arcy emphasizes the role the oil supplier should play. “We gather all the operating information a fleet has before making a lubricant recommendation. “For fleets that can use it,” Arcy continues, “10W-30 provides a fueleconomy benefit and better coldstarting performance. But for very cold conditions, we’d recommend

5W-40—especially where engines had been idling all night to make it easier to start them.” As for 10W30 vs. 10W-40, he’d “recommend the 10W-30 for its positive impact on fuel economy, but if the engine maker does not allow it, I’d suggest the fleet go with 10W-40.” ExxonMobil offers an intriguing mix of multi-grade products, including mineral oil, semi-synthetic and full synthetic formulations. “We have our Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 mineral product but also Mobil Delvac Elite synthetic-blend 15W-40, as well as our Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 10W-30 mineral oil product and our 5W-40 full synthetic, Mobil Delvac 1 ESP,” points out Maria Burcham, product technical adviser-commercial vehicle lubricants for ExxonMobil Lubricants & Specialties. The synthetic content of Mobil Delvac Elite 15W-40, Burcham explains, “enables extending drain performance beyond that of a mineralbased oil. I have no hard numbers, but we can say with assurance there are efficiencies [for engine operation]

provided by its synthetic blend.” She says the company’s mineraloil 10W-30 provides lower viscosity at typical engine operating temperatures while its 5W-40 Mobil Delvac 1, a full-synthetic formulation, “provides better cold-startability and drains that extend beyond what a conventional mineral oil product can. The high viscosity index of this oil gives it optimal viscosity characteristics over a wider band of operating temperatures. And the higher oxidation stability the synthetic provides results in the oil having greater resistance to [chemical] breakdown, which speaks to its extended-drain capability.”

MONITORING PROGRAM Burcham says ExxonMobil “recommends customers use our oilmonitoring program, which tracks lubricant performance in actual service, so fleets can ‘customize’ their oil selection to their equipment and duty cycles. We also encourage fleets to follow the lube specs of their engine suppliers.” However, she states that there are “no issues with any fleet changing over to a 5W-40 oil [to increase fuel efficiency]. “Compared to running a 15W-40 mineral oil, we have seen fleets gain up to 3% in miles per gallon by operating with Mobil Delvac 1 full synthetic and our synthetic drivetrain fluids as well. Using both those synthetic lubes,” Burcham adds, “is the best way to realize the greatest potential of synthetics.” Petro Canada offers a “wide variety of viscosity grades from 15W-40 to 0W-40 to cover all operating temperature ranges,” points out Allen Murray, category performance manager for automotive, commercial & industrial lubricants. “We have both a conventional and a synthetic blend 15W-40, a conventional 10W-30, and full synthetics...down to 0W-40.

Forrest Lucas, president of Lucas Oil, argues a “synthetic or a mineral base stock is just a carrier for the additive package.” “Many fleets [have the perception] if they move to a lower-vis oil, they’d want it to be a synthetic,” he continues. “But our conventional 10W-30 offers the protection of our 15W-40 but is aimed at fleets seeking better fuel economy. Our lab tests indicate it can provide up to a 3% fuel-economy gain over a 15W-40. On the other hand, by stepping up to a synthetic blend 15W-40 from a conventional product, a fleet can consider longer drain intervals, as long as they conduct oil analysis.” According to Murray, the company’s full-synthetic 10W-40 is “very differentiated in its performance in all aspects. It has outstanding durability against wear and works at a wider temperature range than a 15W-40 for better cold-start capability. And it provides more of an opportunity to extend drains than a 15W-40.” Murray says there is a very good reason for all the slicing and dicing of multi-grades going on in the marketplace now. “From talking to fleets, what I hear is they want the oil to protect the engine first and then provide any fuel-economy bonus. On top of that, fleets know it is hard to prove an mpg benefit when moving from one [oil] product to another.”

28 American Trucker/ erem /DDecember 1 0 r2 b c 2010

Go to

SEPARATE ROLES TO PLAY Peter Thomson, director of C&I Marketing for Valvoline International, contends that having both semi- and full-synthetic products on the market does confuse customers but each type of multi-grade has its role to play. “There are very good 15W-40 products that can provide extended drains. And both a 1W40 and a 5W-40 will provide good cold-weather startability. But fuel economy is the key reason for fleets moving to 5W-40 products.” He says that with buyer interest in mind, the company offers the Valvoline MPG Guarantee that will “promise that fleets running our fullsynthetic Premium Blue Xtreme 5W40 along with our synthetic gear fluid will gain a minimum of a 1.6% improvement over operating with 15W40 oil. If the fleet adds our electronic driver-monitoring system, we will guarantee up to a 4% improvement.” Keep in mind that some oil suppliers insist that synthetics are not necessarily needed to produce a performance-oriented low-vis oil. And most would agree that their claims— and those of their competitors— about product performance should be viewed as the result of the total formulation of a given motor oil. AT

HEAVY HAULING

Rolling support Having the right tires keeps heavy-haul experts McTyre Trucking on the road

W

g extra-large, extraeverything on a truck is down to the tires. Johnny McTyre (pronounced Mc-Teer), vice president of McTyre Trucking, knows this perhaps better than anyone, having grown up in the familyowned heavy-haul business. Orlando, FL-based McTyre, established as a flatbed hauler of concrete blocks in 1947 by Johnny’s great-grandfather, Hilton McTyre, eventually expanded into construction equipment hauling for local contractors. “Transporting oversized, overweight commodities for manufacturers, freight forwarders and utility companies became our niche,” notes McTyre. “Today, we move everything from generators, transformers and turbines to wind towers. We also do a lot of Dept. of Transportation work, including the transport of bridge pilings and girders.” While McTyre Trucking covers the continental U.S., McTyre says the majority of business comes from the Southeast. Early in November, for example, the company completed a job that was two months in the planning and involved moving a 490,000lb. transformer.

“The transformer was delivered via heavy-lift ship to the Port of Palm Beach [Florida] where it was off-loaded directly onto one of our heavy rigs specifically configured for the job,” explains McTyre. “Because of its large size and heavy weight, the move was made over a 16-hr. period during the nighttime hours to avoid traffic congestion. The rig was accompanied by Florida highway patrol, utility crews and local sheriffs’ departments for each county it traveled through on its 100-mi. journey to the St. Lucie nuclear power plant in Fort Pierce [Florida].”

TRULY OVERSIZED The overall dimensions of this haul rig—including the truck and trailer, cargo, and two prime movers (one to pull the truck, one to push it from behind)—were 290 ft long, 20 ft. wide, and 16 ft., 10 in. tall. The total gross weight was 912,000 lbs. Because of the extreme nature of the company’s hauls, having good tires is imperative to the operation. According to McTyre, the company has been purchasing Goodyear tires (including tire models G269, G399, G372, G316, and G169) for

its tractor and trailer fleet for 10 years now. “[Our tire supplier] Action Gator introduced us to Goodyear’s FleetHQ program to help us control tire costs,” McTyre says. “The program gives us a central location to call for tire service and locked-in pricing on tires/ repairs across the country. With FleetHQ, we’re better able to budget tire costs and actually stay within that budget.” McTyre says a certain number of tire failures out on the road are inevitable with the amount of stress put on heavy-haul equipment and the subsequent hotter running tire temps. Maintaining tire pressures through daily visual inspections, he notes, goes a long way in minimizing on-road failures. The McTyre fleet currently includes 40 tractors made up of a mix of International 8600, Peterbilt 367 and Kenworth C500 models. The very diverse 140-trailer fleet encompasses everything from flatbeds, step-decks, and single- and doubledrops to extendable versions of all those models and multi-axle lowboys, as well as Schnabel trailers for hauling wind towers.
