Solution or problem?

YOUNG DRIVERS by Kevin Jones, editor kevin.jones@penton.com

I WAS 18 THE FIRST TIME I drove cross-country solo, and I had a number of coast-to-cost trips under my belt by the time I was 21. Of course, this was in a passenger car and—not to date myself—the speed limit at the time was the old double-nickel, 55 mph.

I bring this up because there’s growing pressure from some in the trucking industry to come up with a way to get young people behind the wheel. There’s already legislation in Congress that would let states decide if CDL holders under age 21, who currently are permitted to drive intrastate, may cross state lines. In the grand scheme of things, I can see some sense in the proposition: Vocation-oriented high school grads, who might make a fine career out of trucking, currently have little incentive to give the job a look because, simply, they’re too young by law to drive long haul. And working the warehouse or washing trucks for three years is hardly an appealing entry-level step for someone who wants to be on the road. So

these young people look for work elsewhere, and too few will give the industry another thought when they’re three years into another occupation. What rubs me the wrong way is that the

several years ago also called for a graduated licensing program, offers some sobering statistics regarding young drivers in this month’s “Business of Trucking” column on page 16.

Like everything in trucking, the best answer always seems to be “it depends.” current push seems like a desperate attempt by big trucking to fill seats at all costs. And the highway safety groups have been screaming bloody murder, literally, ever since an ATA-amenable senator convinced enough fellow Republicans to stick some enabling language in the highway bill.

The topic also has been one of the most popular on AmericanTrucker.com and on our Facebook page, where drivers are clearly divided on the idea. Join the conversation and share your thoughts. Ultimately, though, like everything else in trucking, the best answer seems to be “it depends.”

On the other hand, ATA suggests developing a path to a graduated license program, which I think is a good middle ground. FMCSA is working to develop national CDL training standards, so the timing is good. Our Tim Brady, who

PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE COMING SOON, DTNA EXEC SAYS For several years now, truck makers have touted the advantages of telematics. Likewise, sensors and wireless communication technology can report engine problems from a vehicle still on the road and streamline the repair process. The next step is to translate that data stream into uptime, to fix a truck before it’s broken—and that’s coming soon, said executives with Daimler Trucks North America and Zonar Systems. “We need to get very focused on all of this data that we generate. In the end, we need to be smart enough to turn our big data into predictive maintenance procedures for our customers,” Friedrich Baumann, DTNA senior vice president-aftermarket, told trucking editors gathered in Yountville, CA, last month. Baumann explained that the next step will be to provide recommendations to customers as to optimizing performance and anticipating problems. The advantage is that few fleets can generate sufficient data on their own, to say nothing of having the expertise to make sense of it all.

“If the smaller guys who run 25 or 30 trucks get data that’s based on a pool of 100,000 trucks, they feel much more comfortable making decisions,” Baumann said. He anticipates this passive phase will become a reality within the next 24 months. The active phase will incorporate that big data history with real-time, onthe-road telematics and diagnostic capability. That technology will be in trucks within five years, he estimates. The ability to decipher that “big mess” and actually “do things that are meaningful” is the future, Brett Brinton, Zonar president & CEO, added. “Right now, Virtual Technician is reactive, and it’s been very successful. But the next frontier is predictive,” Brinton added. “We have done prototype tests, and we can tell when a turbocharger is going to go out. We can tell when a failure is going to occur with the DEF system. That’s an example of what we can do. What’s coming is just amazing.”

Caterpillar to build its own trucks It’s the beginning of the end for the nearly six-year truck-building partnership between Caterpillar and Navistar, as the heavy equipment maker expects to start building vocational trucks on its own next year. The company will begin independently designing and manufacturing its CT line of vocational models at its plant in Victoria, TX, a facility that originally opened in 2012 to produce hydraulic excavators. Navistar currently manufactures the trucks in Escobedo, Mexico. “The on-highway vocational truck product family is important to our product line. Customers like our trucks and want to include them in their fleets in a variety of heavy-duty applications such as dump trucks, mixers, haulers, or one of the other configurations we offer,” Chris Chadwick, director of Caterpillar’s

“It’s a pleasure to recognize Myron by giving him a new Kenworth ICON 900 as his ride,” said Keim. “Myron is a model driver and a humble man who does his job well every day. He takes very good care of his truck and keeps it spotless inside and outside.” www.kenworth.com

Stan Keim’s parents, Glen and DeAnn Keim, started Keim in 1955, and Stan purchased the company in 1997. Today, the fleet operates 210 Kenworths in its 220-truck fleet and operates terminals in Fort Dodge, IA; Jasper, TN; Medicine Lodge, KS; and Braymer, MO. Keim said he plans to keep his Kenworth ICON 900 at Keim headquarters in Sabetha, KS, as part of the company’s driver recruitment and retention efforts. “I also plan to take the ICON 900 to area truck shows and use it as a participant in local town parades. Everybody wants to see big trucks, especially Kenworths,” said Keim. Keim TS also purchased an additional ICON 900 through MHC Kenworth-Kansas City and is using it as a driver reward truck. Myron Wiebe, a Keim TS driver for 21 years, was chosen to be the driver of that Kenworth ICON 900. “It really surprised me. It’s quite an honor that they bought a second ICON 900 and selected me to drive it. I feel really blessed about it,” Wiebe said. Wiebe drives 150,000 mi. a year and

Volvo, Mack boost uptime Volvo Trucks North America has introduced prepaid preventive maintenance plans as part of the company’s ongoing effort to reduce customers’ operating costs. The maintenance plans cover all model-year 2011 and newer Volvo models powered by Volvo D11, D13 or D16 engines and align with the new service intervals announced earlier this year. Also focused on reducing the total cost of ownership for customers, Mack Trucks now offers the option to purchase prepaid preventive maintenance plans based on its revised service intervals. The maintenance plans are available for all model-year 2011 and newer Mack models powered by Mack MP7, MP8 or MP10 engines.

Three specified plans are available for both OEMs. These range from basic oil changes and 74-point inspections to more in-depth maintenance, including service of the aftertreatment system, transmission, and chassis. Volvo customers can create custom plans and schedule maintenance at any Volvo dealership in the U.S. and Canada through Volvo Action Service.

Prepaid plans ensure proper vehicle care is taken.

Both companies’ plans are contracts that offer numerous levels of coverage, lock in current parts and labor rates, and increase customer control of maintenance expenses.

Peterbilt now offers ESM Maxwell Technologies has announced that Peterbilt Motors is now offering Maxwell’s ultracapacitor-powered Engine Start Module (ESM) as a factory-installed option on new Model 579 and 567 trucks. Maxwell said its ESM enables fleets to give drivers the starting reliability they demand while increasing payload. The ultracapacitor replaces one traditional battery—reducing weight by up to 60 lbs.—and is dedicated to starting the vehicle. This means power is always available to start the vehicle, reducing unplanned downtime. “Maxwell’s field-proven ESM gives truck operators assurance their engines will start reliably, especially for operations

with multiple starts and stops per day or that use the liftgate or other auxiliary battery-powered equipment while the truck is off,” the company said. “Additionally, the ultracapacitor is not affected by hotel loads—lights, HVAC, television, and other in-cab or sleeper-powered devices—which can drain power during extended use.” ”Superior uptime and reliability are two advantages our customers expect from Peterbilt, and this new technology is one way to help bring those to even greater levels,” said Anthony Gansle, Peterbilt marketing manager of on-highway products. www.maxwell.com

Mack customers can utilize Mack OneCall, its 24/7 service and support network. Customer maintenance can be scheduled and performed at any of the 460-plus Mack dealerships in the U.S. and Canada.

Shell said it is the first company in the lubricants sector to launch an artificial intelligence-driven service for customers. Shell Virtual Assistant is an interactive one-stop shop on the Shell website where customers and distributors can get answers to common lubricant-related questions, such as where to buy lubricants and what pack sizes are available. The service, which is available 24/7, also provides information about product technical properties and can assist with material requests. www.shell.us

Big data delivers payback While the marketing push around telematics systems and big data solutions has been aimed at large fleets— with the payback multiplied by the number of trucks—owner-operators and small fleets stand to benefit as well. Following their presentation at a recent press event to outline the new partnership between Zonar Systems and Daimler Trucks North America, Zonar President & CEO Brett Brinton and Chief Strategy Officer Mike McQuade sat down with American Trucker to explain how the telematics tools they are developing make sense for even a single truck operator. “A lot of the telematics push has been

about efficiency and uptime, without rewarding the driver. So we’re really aiming at things that make it better for the driver and the owner-operator,” said Brinton. “The benefit, if priced right, is it’s a dedicated, purpose-built device that would bring value to operating the truck, but would also add value when they turn the key off.”

The Zonar package has two components: the “black box,” which Brinton compares to a flight data recorder in aircraft and which transmits data to cloud storage and also has the capacity to talk to other devices; and a dedicated, versatile mobile tablet to access, process and display the data that’s collected in the cloud.

A near-term goal is to provide “affordable, tailored products” for different users, Brinton added.

“What can an owner-operator do to monitor his truck, to collect data over time?” McQuade asked, before using running I-90 across Montana in March as an example . A telematics platform stores the data from a previous trip, including environmental conditions, and compares apples-to-apples information to draw conclusions about the vehicle’s operation. “Things wear, things change. More sophisticated people will say, ‘I’m not going to guess anymore,’” he said.

“It’s more important, in my mind, to the guy out there trying to make a living in a truck that he owns than it is to a fleet— but they get the same value,” McQuade said.

And that data can pay in a number of ways. The most obvious and substantial cost savings come from improved fuel efficiency. While some advantage is gained by making sure the engine is maintained for optimal performance, getting the best performance out of drivers is where the real money is. The Z Fuel program offered by Zonar is designed to measure fuel consumption, look at exactly how the truck was driven, and then coach a driver to use more fuel-efficient techniques. In addition to fuel savings, the data can also be used to fine-tune maintenance cycles and reduce those costs. With an ELD mandate just around the regulatory corner, Zonar anticipates bundling a solution into its package as well. —KEVIN JONES

WASHINGTON UPDATE

NTSB: Fatigue caused 2014 Walmart truck crash A FEDERAL INVESTIGATION has confirmed preliminary reports in last year’s high-profile crash on the New Jersey Turnpike: The truck driver was fatigued at the end of his on-duty period, likely because of an 800-mi., overnight commute to his Walmart Transportation terminal to start the day. The investigation also said injuries to the celebrity occupants of a customized luxury van were made worse because they were not wearing seat belts when the speeding truck rear-ended the van while traffic was slowed in a construction zone.

NTSB simulation

As a result of its investigation, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) last month reiterated a 2010 recommendation to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to make fatigue management programs mandatory for all carriers. “Hours-of-service (HOS) rules cannot address what drivers do on their own time,” said NTSB Chairman Christopher A. Hart, noting that the driver, Kevin Roper of Jonesboro, GA, had been on duty 13.5 hours of his 14-hour workday at the time of the crash, and had been awake more than 28 hours. “Fatigue management programs can help. To its credit, Walmart has taken steps to bolster its driver fatigue education and policies since this crash.” Among the occupants of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz limo van, actor/comedian

back and cited the crash as a reason to strengthen driver hours regulations instead of loosening them. The spending bill to which the language was attached stalled on procedural matters, but the HOS provision was eventually included in the year-end federal budget appropriation.

Tracy Morgan, a former Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock star, was seriously injured, and comedian James “Mack” McNair was killed in the first of several collisions that ultimately involved 21 people and six vehicles. The federal safety watchdog, which has no regulatory authority, called on FMCSA to finalize research evaluating integrated onboard recording systems including fatigue-monitoring technologies. Criminal charges against Roper were filed in New Jersey, while Walmart settled civil suits with Morgan and two other injured passengers for an undisclosed amount earlier this year, and paid a $10 million wrongful death claim by McNair’s children. The accident also received a lot of attention on Capitol Hill, coming as the U.S. Senate was debating legislation to suspend the restart provisions of the 2013 HOS rule. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) led the fight to block the roll-

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), who fought the restart suspension with Booker, reinforced his position. “The NTSB report underscores a sad and tragic fact we already know: A tired trucker is a dangerous driver, capable of turning a big rig into a killing machine,” Blumenthal said. “Allowing more tired truckers on our roads will only lead to more accidents like the horrific accident that injured Tracy Morgan last year.” He also criticized the Senate for recently passing a highway bill “full of special interest gifts to the trucking industry—most troubling of which would allow 18-year-olds to drive these monster trucks on little rest,” Blumenthal said. “We can and must do better. Lives depend on it.” Similarly, Daphne Izner, who founded Parents Against Tired Truckers after a Walmart truck driver fell asleep at the wheel causing the accident that killed her son, said she was “saddened” that “the economic interests of the trucking industry have prevailed” despite the ongoing efforts of highway safety groups.

THE BUSINESS OF TRUCKING

18 YEARS OLD AND TRUCKIN’ Allowing younger drivers to take 40 tons cross-country is a double-edged sword

Thinkstock

by Tim Brady, Business Editor

16 AMERICAN TRUCKER / SEPTEMBER 2015

As baby boomer truck drivers exit the industry, trucking is struggling to find suitable replacements willing to drive OTR. Younger workers have different priorities than those from the boomer generation. Many of today’s newer truck drivers want to be home at least every weekend and would prefer to be home each night. Most OTR trucking positions require at least two weeks out, and many up to two months, before drivers can return home. The younger generations don’t look at their careers as the main focus in life. Leisure time is their priority. I’ve seen millennials quit great-paying jobs because the job required too much time away from family and friends.

Frankly, people with this mind-set don’t last two weeks as OTR drivers. The industry is now reaching in many directions to help solve the problem. However, the biggest issue facing the industry still remains the age-old problem of driver turnover. There are many contributors to this, including home time, regulations and pay. Regulations are tough: 14 hours to accomplish 11 hours of driving and all of the unloading, loading, fueling, waiting to be assigned loads, truck safety inspections, etc. Then the trucker must take a 10-hour rest break before starting another 14-hour day. The 14-hour clock can’t ever be turned off. And a trucker can only be on-duty driving or not driv-

VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.

ing for 70 hours in any eight-day period. The regs are lengthy and very specific with little to no leeway for mistakes— and new regs are added constantly. Trucking isn’t covered under the Fair Labor standards, so there is no minimum wage. Most truckers are paid by the mile and the more miles you travel in the 14/11 hours per day, the bigger the paycheck. Here’s the interesting part: the more dangerous the driving conditions, the slower a trucker is able to travel, and the less pay he/she earns. The large number of multi-vehicle accidents involving semi-trucks this past winter is a great—and unfortunate— example of the consequences of the 14-hour rule. Truckers won’t stop for bad weather as it costs them pay. So, they stay on the road when they should be parked, all because they can’t turn off the14-hour clock and wait out the bad weather. The turnover starts churning here. Drivers get unhappy with their pay and leave one trucking company for another in hopes of finding one where they can be fairly compensated for their time. Because of the unrelenting government regs, however, there is no real difference. All carriers operate under the same regulations, so eventually many drivers just abandon their trucking careers. And now some trucking interests, working with Congress, want to allow 18-year-olds behind the wheel of 40 tons of truck and freight to haul interstate freight. Let’s look at some interesting government statistics concerning the 16- to 20-year-old automobile drivers in the U.S. (At this time, there’s no breakdown available for 18- to 20-year-old drivers.)

FROM THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION: Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for young adults ages 16 to 20.

Young adults between the ages of 16 and 20 are more likely to be killed and injured in motor vehicle crashes than children and youth from birth to age 15. In 2002, of the 7,410 children, youth, and young adults from birth through age 20 who were killed in motor vehicle crashes, 76% were 16- to 20-year-olds; of the 729,207 injured from birth to age 20, 65% were 16- to 20-year-olds. In 2008, 12% (5,864) of all drivers involved in fatal crashes (50,186) were 15- to 20-year-olds, and 14% (1,429,000) of all drivers involved in police-reported crashes (10,081,000) were young drivers. FROM THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION: In 2011, about 2,650 teens aged 16-19 in the U.S. were killed and almost 292,000 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor-vehicle crashes.

Young people ages 15-24 represent only 14% of the U.S. population; however, they account for 30% ($19 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among males and 28% ($7 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among females. The CDC listed the following factors putting 16- to 20-year-old drivers at a higher risk than older drivers: • Teens are more likely than older drivers to underestimate dangerous situa-

VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.

tions or not be able to recognize hazardous situations. • Teens are more likely than older drivers to speed and allow shorter headways (the distance from the front of one vehicle to the front of the next). The presence of male teenage passengers increases the likelihood of this risky driving behavior. • Among male drivers between 15 and 20 years of age who were involved in fatal crashes in 2012, 37% were speeding at the time of the crash and 25% had been drinking. • Compared with other age groups, teens have the lowest rate of seat belt use. In 2013, only 55% of high school students reported they always wear seat belts when riding with someone else. Now add a big rig to the mix and there’s a potential increase in catastrophic traffic accidents involving semi-trucks. This is especially worrisome if the current truck driving ‘training regimen’ of three to six weeks continues once 18- to 20-year-olds are allowed to apply for interstate CDLs. This isn’t to say 18- to 20-year-olds shouldn’t be allowed to drive OTR; however, the entire truck driver training requirements system would need to be changed. In a column I wrote almost four years ago, I suggested a graduated system with testing requirements between each level: student, trainee, apprentice, journeyman and master trucker. Let’s give the next crop of truck drivers intensive, superior training so they can drive into their retirement years instead of a fatal wreck.

Fortunately, a number of factors stabilized the market, and natural rubber prices have leveled off. But that doesn’t mean we can sit back and relax. Natural rubber is still an agricultural product that can only be produced in limited climates. Therefore, it is subjected to the same threats of disease and the lack of or abundance of rain. Market stability can be shortlived when the environment plays such a vi-

thrives in areas where rain is limited and heat is not. Arid regions like western Texas and southern Arizona are ideal for the production of latex that can be used in tires, wetsuits, medical gloves, and other rubber products. We are not yet at the point where the industry can start dreaming about abandoning traditional sources of natural rubber, but the experimental phase is moving toward commercial operations so there is hope.

use of Russian dandelions as a source of natural rubber. “It is an undemanding plant, even in the Northern Hemisphere, and can be cultivated on land not suitable for food production,” says Dr. Carla Recker, who led the team in the development phase. Like guayule, Russian dandelions are not completely reliant on a cartel of growers in a small geographical area, so the potential for reducing the global dependence on natural rubber is promising. As encouraging as these developments have been, the industry is still just a natural disaster or climate shift away from another global rubber shortage. And while we can be encouraged by the developments for alternatives, the dependence on the cartel of small countries in Southeast Asia has not diminished. To combat this risk, truckers should maximize the life of their tires. If they do, they won’t feel the pinch as much as the one who treats tires like throwaway items.

BREAKDOWN:

PARTS OPTIONS IN A PINCH

by Kevin Jones, Editor

“When a guy’s down and he’s under a load, he doesn’t have a lot of options.”

Trucks break, it’s a fact of life. But, by definition, you can’t expect the unexpected—although advanced telematics systems are getting there. Still, somewhere in between, there’s an owner-operator on a highway tightrope—all day, every day. He or she can do the right things to be protected and improve the odds, like holding firm to PM schedules and knowing the truck and trailer from top to bottom, front to back. And paying attention to every shake, rattle, and hum. Complicating matters by penalizing repair procrastinators and drivers who tend to skip pretrip inspections altogether, the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program means that even the little things—a bad bulb, a tread that’s just a little thin, a line with a rub—can’t be ignored without running the risk of a three-year ding on a driver’s DOT safety record and a nasty note from a safety manager. At least that’s what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration was thinking when it came up with the plan. Yet something’s going to happen. No matter how many extra belts and bulbs (or LEDs) and fuses you carry, you’re going to be on the road and need parts, if not a serious repair job. So, what can a professional trucker do to lessen the pain? “Unfortunately, probably four out of five times a repair stop is a bad experience, and two out of five times it will be horrific,” says Bryan Martin, owner of 4 State Trucks. “High-priced parts, a lot of overpriced labor, extended downtimes. Just a total unpleasant experience; not that any breakdown is

ever going to be pleasant. But a lot of the times it’s just at the complete opposite end of the ruler than what a guy would hope to have.” His Joplin, MO, business deals in accessories not repairs, so Martin has the luxury of speaking objectively, since he’s something like a plastic surgeon for trucks, as compared to an emergency room doctor taking critical cases as they come through the door. But his I-80 location and his truck experience means he’s more than familiar with what a mechanical failure means to an owner-operator. “When a guy’s down and he’s under a load, he doesn’t have a lot of options. He’s going to be at whoever’s mercy— who can get to him, and who can get to him the fastest,” Martin continues. “In a lot of cases, they’re just going to have to hope and trust that they get treated as fairly as possible.” A basic tool now available to truckers, though not strictly a trucking tool, is Google, Martin suggests. Whether it’s restaurants or plumbers, customer reviews are widely available on the World Wide Web. So even in the case of a breakdown, and especially for a local tow and independent repair shop, check out the business’s reputation before giving the approval to start the repair work. “Look into their ratings: their personality, timeliness, ethics—anything that’s

VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.

going to be an advantage over going in totally blind,” Martin says. “And become as familiar as you can with the workings of your truck so [the shop] won’t misdiagnose the failure or sell you more parts than you need.” E-SHOPPING FOR PARTS Similarly, the Internet’s shopping tools and online retail sites have provided another parts option in a pinch.

David Seewack, CEO of FinditParts. com, explains the company was established to be an affordable alternative source for parts. And it’s as simple as typing a part number into a smartphone or tablet. Of course, a key piece to the success of online shopping is speedy shipping; in the case of critical parts buys, next-day air makes up about 25% of FinditParts orders, compared to second-day or regular UPS Ground delivery. “With a couple of mouse clicks, they can locate the part and select whatever freight they need,” Seewack says. “If it’s an owner-operator, that’s his livelihood. He’s got to get back out on the road.” But the real advantage to shopping online is typically price—if a trucker can wait for shipping. “A lot of people use us for comparative shopping; they want to know if they’re getting a good deal or not. Sometimes, people feel captive and certain items are priced so high it’s just crazy,” he

says. “Fast-moving dealers can be very competitive. But in smaller areas, they’ve got the guy and they’ve got the truck, and they can charge anything they want. We have customers all the time who order parts from us and have them shipped to the dealership to be installed. And that includes some very big customers who ship to national chains.” Other than being price-competitive, e-retailers will typically have parts that a local shop won’t. Indeed, the service desk may well “hunt and peck” for a part from the sites. Additionally, the customer will also then receive all of the tracking information and can be confident—without having to play telephone-tag with the repair shop—that the part is coming on time. Along with the full range of truck parts, FinditParts stocks inventory “for almost everything that moves,” Seewack adds, noting that many truckers also own farm equipment or forklifts. And customer service representatives are on duty to offer technical assistance as well. FIX IT BEFORE IT BREAKS? For several years now, truck makers have touted the advantages of telematics, or the ability to monitor, record and relay vehicle performance data to improve operations. Likewise, sensors and wireless communication technology can report engine problems from a vehicle still on the road and streamline the repair process. The next step: to translate that data stream into uptime, to fix a truck before it’s broken—and that’s coming soon, says Friedrich Baumann, senior vice president, Daimler Trucks North America.

“We need to get very focused on all of this data that we generate. In the end, we need to be smart enough to

Sooner or later, a trucker will be on the side of the road. The key is to be prepared.

turn our big data into predictive maintenance procedures for our customers,” Baumann says. “That will be, in my opinion, the next really big game changer in our industry.” (See the rest of Baumann’s explanation on Page 6.) But the folks at Traffilog America say the future of predictive maintenance is, in fact, now. “Traffilog has been doing this for the last three to five years,” Rudi Slochowski, vice president of business development, says. The key is the proprietary algorithms to track trends, whether that’s brakes or oil temperature, gearboxes, clutches, or turbos. Slochowski says that the company can extract that data from any CAN bus “and send it back in easy-to-use reports.”

Indeed, Traffilog is a “next-generation solution” because the platform offers not only the GPS services, driver safety monitoring, fuel management, and on-the-road diagnostics and reporting that other systems do, but advanced technology that is years ahead of the competition, according to Slochowski. Traffilog not only tracks the driver safety events that trigger alerts, it monitors exactly how a driver drives his truck. And not just how he drives the truck, but also the atmospheric conditions at the time for additional context and more exact analysis. The company also has in-house trainers to assist with driver coaching. “Driver mechanical behavior is probably the biggest factor in today’s industry,” Slochowski says. “Seeing how that driver operates his vehicle: Does he use the brake correctly? Does

he use the clutch correctly? Does he shift gears correctly? Does he use the engine brake to slow down? That behavior leads to wear and tear—not just fuel consumption—and it leads to downtime.” Closely monitoring pedal position has allowed Traffilog to save a bus fleet 30% on fuel and, more interestingly, has led to a 30% reduction in brake pad replacements for one of its OEM customers. Seeing a problem with turbo wear, the technology can spot drivers who aren’t giving the turbines enough time to spin up and down in turning the engines on and off. Then there’s the case of an oil pressure drop in a truck that has been regularly running the same route, and a hose leak detected because of an increase in compressor use. And the examples go on and on. Along with real-time notifications on critical issues, Traffilog generates custom reports detailing fleet performance and driver efficiency trends.

Staying on top of routine maintenance helps prevent unplanned repairs.

Customers receive a predictive report called the “doctor’s note” that highlights these potential mechanical issues. Additionally, the staff will analyze the data to catch trends “before the company does.”

THE ‘FUN STUFF’ Not all parts orders are for emergency repairs. For a chrome and accessories shop like 4 State Trucks, the business is about “the fun stuff.”

The next step, which is “very close,” will be for the algorithm to make the predictions and for the system to transmit them instantly and automatically, Slochowski notes.

And, as Martin notes, he still sees plenty of “passionate purchases.” That is, a trucker will spot an item and decide he has to have it. And some have known what they want but just haven’t gone through with a purchase.

“The game will change when a company can predict,” Slochowski says. “Preventive diagnostics is not the same as predictive, to be able to show the company ahead of time. No [competitor] can produce and extract the type of data that Traffilog can. We’ve been waiting for the opportunity to penetrate the U.S. market. We’ve had some quick success, and we look to only get stronger.”

24 AMERICAN TRUCKER / SEPTEMBER 2015

“But they come to Joplin and they know what they want. They’ve planned for it. They’ve dreamed about it. They’ve visualized how it’s going to make their truck look better, perform better, and more comfortable,” Martin says. “They’re fired up. We see that every hour. It’s kind of like a hunter or a fisherman going to Bass Pro Shops.”

But there’s still the matter of installation on many parts. Customers looking for an upfit should plan their travel and schedule an appointment to be assured of a slot and prevent unnecessary downtime. At 4 State Trucks, Marten says he tries to have a couple of installers “unbooked” to start each day for “driveup” customers. “Certainly you can try us anytime, but if you can give us two or three days’ notice, your chances are much better to get the install done than a spur-of-themoment walk-in,” Martin says. So in the not-too-distant future, even when technology will predict breakdowns before they happen, order the parts, and schedule a repair, truckers will still be able to imagine and accessorize their dream machines.

Passingthrough Technology is allowing carrier to skip weigh station inspections

INTERMODAL Headquartered in a test state when the CSA program was under development, BarOle Trucking jumped at the opportunity to take part in the evaluation process. “I even attended three semesters of training to learn how to use the program’s data to improve our operation,” Karol Smith, fleet manager, says. “We check CSA data on our fleet regularly and recently found that our maintenance BASIC scores needed attention,” Smith continues. “As a result, we changed how we handle inspections and maintenance for our fleet of vehicles in our shop.” Taking the initiative is nothing new for BarOle Trucking, a for-hire intermodal carrier that hauls international freight on ocean-going containers in six states from rail yards in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Founded in 1984, the carrier has a fleet of 22 company trucks and 133 chassis, and uses the services of 43 owner-operators. “Our deliveries require a lot of coordination,” Smith states. “In many cases, when we pick up import freight at rail yards, it has to be delivered to the consignee within 24 to 48 hours. Export freight also has to

26 AMERICAN TRUCKER / SEPTEMBER 2015

be picked up and delivered to rail yards in order to be loaded onto the trains at a certain time so it will reach ports in time to get loaded onto container ships.” Ups and downs in import/export markets, economic impacts on freight volumes, and labor issues at ports like those recently on the West Coast add to the challenge of coordinating resources for BarOle Trucking, Smith notes. “If the flow of freight is steady, we can manage assets fairly easily,” she says. “The recession ended all of that predictability, and then after the economy returned to the same rhythm, slowdowns and lockouts at ports changed the game again.” Smith relates that BarOle Trucking is using technology to take uncontrollable variables, such as weigh station delays that cost time and money, out of the equation. For example, on the recommendation of the Minnesota State Patrol Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, the company installed the Drivewyze weigh station bypass service on six trucks that travel past three weigh stations in Minnesota and Wisconsin multiple times each day.

“We didn’t expect a commercial vehicle enforcement officer to tell us how our trucks could navigate weigh stations,” Smith explains, “but it turns out they wanted us to use the bypass service so they could concentrate their attention on trucks and operators that didn’t have good safety records.” It also turns out that the benefits to BarOle Trucking are measurable. “The six trucks that use the Drivewyze service are avoiding an average of about 15 hours in weigh station delays each month,” Smith relates. “That time savings gives us the ability to move up to an additional four loads of freight per month. The service also makes it easier for our dispatchers because they’re not constantly juggling schedules to make up for lost time at the weigh stations. “Those trucks are also using about 60 fewer gallons of fuel each month,” Smith adds. “Even with relatively low fuel prices we’re saving over $130 per month, which more than pays for the service.”

SPOT LIGHT on an

by Timothy Brady Owner-operator Ben Lujin Leased to: Ankle Pik LLC, Blackfoot, ID

How are maintenance and repairs handled? What do you do yourself? I have a trusted independent shop in Idaho, but I try to fix what I can. I’m educated in automotive service but diesel-dumb. So I research online a lot, asking others [for help] in forums. I try to avoid dealerships and truck stop shops as much as possible. I don’t really want to bash anybody, but I want my truck in the hands of those who appreciate my business. To me, that means fast and accurate diagnostics and repairs—done right the first time by experienced staff and at reasonable rates. What are the major challenges you face with your maintenance/repair program? How do you handle them? One is keeping up with it. I always have a list in my head of stuff that needs to be done. Two is having the money available in advance. And three is finding the time and energy. I try to prioritize maintenance/repair items according to safety/urgency/necessity levels. The carrier helps immensely with the financial resources, but I haven’t figured out the time/energy thing yet.

Ben Lujin has been in trucking for almost 10 years, although he’s had family in trucking since the 1950s. He credits any success to “pure perseverance and maybe even a little stupid luck.” He drives a 2012 Freightliner Coronado with 260-in. condo sleeper powered by a DD15 engine and a 13-speed manual with 18 speed shifter head on it. He pulls a 2004 Utility 53-ft. reefer wagon, hauling “a lot of potatoes” out of Idaho and otherwise going “wherever the money is—with some exceptions.”

Do you stock any parts for your trucks or purchase as needed? I have a few filters on board, but I mostly buy as needed. What are your specifications for your trucks? Do you purchase used and customize them to your specs or order new trucks built to your specs? I don’t think I’ve ever left anything bone stock. I’ve never had the pleasure of spec’ing a truck beyond [thinking] I’d like a Coronado. I’m torn between that new Western Star model and buying a pre-emissions truck and refurb’ing it. Either way, it’d have to be more aerodynamic and more fuel efficient than what I have now. How do you determine when it’s time to replace a truck or trailer? I guess when it dies. I still own my ‘firsts.’

And I may have to hit the Pick 6 Lotto before buying new again. What do you enjoy about trucking? Well, there’s the “paid tourist” aspect of it. I’ve seen more things and places than I could have imagined. I feed America and keep her alive. There’s a sense of pride and accomplishment that goes along with that. Also, trucking is a great opportunity for people-watching, not to mention the variety of accents, foods, cultures, climates, etc. And I like not having someone breathing over my shoulder.

Bob Ragsdale COMPANY

TOYOTA FORKLIFTS OF ATLANTA OPERATION

Maintenance support for customer forklifts via 50 technicians at four dealership locations in the Atlanta, GA, area

PROBLEM

SOLUTION

One might think forklifts pose fewer maintenance headaches than commercial trucks, but it’s not quite that simple, explains Bob Ragsdale, fleet manager at Toyota Forklifts of Atlanta, which sells a wide variety of Toyota Industrial Equipment-branded models.

Back in April, after two years of field testing, Toyota Industrial Equipment introduced its new T-Matics Mobile and T-Matics Command platforms, forklift-based vehicle management systems (VMS) based on Sprint’s machine-to-machine (M2M) technology. Both can be embedded in new units or installed as an aftermarket upgrade.

First of all, the “power population” of forklifts is extremely diverse, with diesel, gasoline, natural gas, propane, and all-electric units often operating side-by-side, depending on specific warehouse needs. And maintenance protocols and parts supply must run a wide gamut as well. Second, how forklifts are acquired and serviced is fairly broad, Ragsdale notes, with units purchased, rented and leased. One of Ragsdale’s challenges is how to handle forklift service spread out across Atlanta’s 132-plus square miles. “Planning ahead is key when it comes to forklift maintenance,” Ragsdale stresses. “We want to schedule maintenance in such a way that it’s done at the right time with minimal downtime for our customer and optimal travel times for our technicians.”

28 AMERICAN TRUCKER / SEPTEMBER 2015

The T-Matics platforms digitally record and report critical data such as forklift location and hours of use, and tap into Sprint’s Nationwide 4G cellular network to deposit that data into a VMS. That allows companies and their dealerships to better understand how efficiently their forklifts are used. The system can also work with several different types/brands of forklifts and other warehouse equipment to provide warehouse companies with a complete fleet data picture, notes Toyota. T-Matics Mobile, which works on a cellular signal, is touted as being ideal for forklifts that may rotate between facilities, while T-Matics Command is designed for those that stay in fixed locations. Both systems aim to increase efficiency and uptime by tracking current usage and long-term operating trends, Toyota says.

From where Ragsdale sits, though, this technology helps his dealership fine-tune maintenance plans for customers. “First, it helps us build a complete maintenance history for each piece of equipment being tracked and then allows access to its hour meters so we can better coordinate preventive maintenance service schedules,” Ragsdale points out. Generating more precise maintenance histories lets Toyota Forklifts’ technicians time major repair work more efficiently, he emphasizes. For example, Ragsdale offers this scenario: Based on historical data, it’s determined a certain type of forklift needs brakes replaced at 2,500 hours of operation. Technicians can now plan that brake job near enough to that replacement point that the customer gets the full usable life of the component. Additionally, by replacing the unit on a schedule, downtime is minimized and work schedules can be adjusted around the maintenance work for the best optimized technician performance. “It prevents us from servicing equipment too soon or too late and really reduces the travel time for our technicians—all without the labor-intensive manual processes we used to use,” Ragsdale explains. “Those are the big benefits for us.”

WHEELS LIGHTWEIGHTING IS A VITAL EFFORT underway by leading wheel makers to help the industry lower total vehicle weight to meet approaching emissions and fuel-efficiency requirements for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, says Craig Kessler, vice president/engineering at Accuride Corp. “We are working to achieve this by lowering the weight of steel and aluminum OEM first-fit and aftermarket wheels for tractors and trailers.”

Product development engineers at Accuride’s North American Engineering and R&D Center are at the heart of that effort, Kessler notes. “They are pursuing alternate engineering and metallurgical approaches that achieve reductions in

“Spec’ing lighter weight forged aluminum wheels is a simple solution to increasing overall fuel efficiency, and oftentimes improving the freight-carrying capacity of a vehicle,” he says. “For example, our Ultra One wheel with MagnaForce alloy ... can save nearly 100 lbs. per tractor-trailer, [and] offers a 17% increase in strength over existing alloys,” Thomas points out. Alcoa Wheels also recently launched Dura-Bright Evo, which the company says is its easiest-to-maintain commercial truck wheel. The wheel incorporates the benefits of its predecessor, the Dura-Bright wheel with XBR technology.

Efforts to reduce weight continue to provide benefits total wheel weight while maintaining physical integrity, durability and performance,” he states. “Our engineering team continues to assess new steel and aluminum alloys that will help us open the door to the next generation of lighter weight steel and aluminum wheels. Brian Thomas, marketing communications manager, Alcoa Wheel & Transportation Products, points out that wheels are one of the few components where weight can be reduced.

30 AMERICAN TRUCKER / SEPTEMBER 2015

“The Dura-Bright Evo wheel,” Thomas says, “is 10 times more resistant to corrosion caused by road salts and weather elements and more resistant to chemicals found in truck cleaning agents.” The Dura-Bright Evo wheel is now commercially available in North America on Alcoa’s LvL One 22.5- x 8.25-in. and 24.5x 8.25-in. wheels.

Lite Duplex aluminum wheels that are up to 4 lbs. lighter than the models they replaced. “Accuride’s wheel initiatives are not only related to lightweighting,” states Rafael Gonzalez, director of product management, Wheels. “After investing in two advanced coating systems, we then launched the Steel Armor [coating], which is now standard on our steel wheels to offer an advantage to fleets operating in corrosive environments. Maxion Wheels is addressing corrosion and durability as well, notes Mark Fonte, marketing & sales manager-OE Truck & Military. “Looking at current improvements in finish and performance, we have implemented a 100% wire brushing operation to better remove weld spatter from the surface of the wheel prior to our e-coat paint process. This eliminates the silicates that can remain after welding of the disc and rim, which can become a corrosion initiator over time. “At Maxion Wheels, we have also implemented a 100% leak test on our production line to ensure that within each wheel we maintain the integrity of the rim from air leakage,” Fonte adds. Looking to the future, Maxion Wheels is working on further mass reduction across its entire wheel portfolio. According to Fonte, the company also continues to develop improvements in corrosion-resistant coatings.
