H

erzensdieb, a premium Trakehner stallion, was champion at his licensing and was proclaimed an elite stallion at the 2013 Trakehner Stallion Licensing in Neumunster, Germany, October 19, 2013. Herzensdieb, translated, means heart thief, and this stunning stallion has proven himself as a type improver with great rideability. His canter scored a 9.5 at the Trakehner Championships. He sold for the highest price ever, at the time, for a Trakehner stallion. His get have received numerous accolades, with two young stallions approved by the Trakehner Verband, including one who was approved by the Hanoverian stud book, and 36 daughters who have successfully produced foals introduced into the Trakehner studbook. His famous offspring in the show ring right now are French-owned Hilario Saint and Feistkorn’s Bundeschampionate finalist Herzensfurst. Herzensdieb is licensed and approved premium elite Trakehner, plus Hanoverian, Swedish and Danish.

Greetings fellow Trakehner breeders, riders, trainers and enthusiasts! I am excited for this issue of the American Trakehner Magazine. This issue showcases our breed’s success in the show ring. From the local shows to international competitions it is clear that the Trakehner breed is a force to be reckoned with. As we celebrate our successes we must also keep in mind the horse greats of the past. We recently lost an influential stallion and my heart is with those who knew Tribute best. A bit more about how he impacted the breed can be found on page 32.

Trakehner Trivia How well do you know the ATA registration rules? They can be complex and confusing at times, particularly, to the new ATA member. Even seasoned ATA members are asked questions about the registration process and need a refresher course on some of the finer points. There will be an ongoing column in the ATA magazines that gives the reader an opportunity to test their registration knowledge. Answers and answer rationale can be found on page 38.

1. All foals by an OSB-A-S100R (restricted stallion; approved Arabian, Thoroughbred, or Anglo-Arab) out of an OSB mare will be registered in the ORB-A, purebred division. True or False.

2. Offspring by an OSB-A/E-S100 stallion and out of a PSB-B mare are registered in ORB-A, purebred division. True or False.

3.Offspring by a Jockey Club Thoroughbred stallion and a PSB-B mare can be registered in which of the following. a) ORB-B b)ORB-D c) OAB-B d) not at all 4.The ATA will not register a Trakehner beyond the age of 10 years. True or False

If you are thinking of presenting a stallion or colt for approvals with the ATA, this is an excellent year to do it! At the recent Spring Board Meeting, the Board of Directors approved a motion to allow all stallions/colts that are presented at the 2015 Annual Meeting to receive a 50% discount of their normal fees (if the colt was pre-nominated by his first birthday for approvals with the ATA he is still eligible for the 50% discount of the remaining fees that are owed). This discount is only eligible for the inspection fees themselves. There is not a discount on any stabling, transportation, vet, registration, genetic testing fees, or any other fees related to presenting the colt for inspection outside of the inspection fees. This discount is only eligible for any stallions/colts being presented for inspection/approval at the Annual Meeting in 2015. The stallions/colts must be registered for the Annual Meeting by the deadline date in September 2015. This discount is open to Trakehners, Arabians, Thoroughbreds, Shagyas, and Anglo-Arabs stallions or colts being presented for approvals. Colts must be a minimum of 2 years old. So You Have Joined the American Trakehner Association...

By Felicia Fountain Congratulations on becoming a member of the American Trakehner Association! You are joining a lovely group of people who are dedicated to developing, promoting and furthering this beloved breed. If you are anything like me you joined because you bought a Trakehner and fell in love with the breed. Since you love the breed you want to help promote it and you thought what better way than to volunteer for the American Trakehner Association.

What does volunteering mean?

Do you have a talent? It can be anything from writing web code to taking lovely photographs to enjoying talking with people from all walks of life. Having an interest in the breed is the first step. However, there are some things you should keep in mind.

The great thing about the Trakehner breed is that it is a closed stud book. The Trakehner breed is pure in the sense that all of the horses have Trakehner blood. This is a breed registry, not a type registry. I thought I knew the difference but once I started learning more about the breed I realized that there was so much more I had to learn.

When it comes to developing a breed having the people there to champion the cause is important. The Trakehner breed is well known for its athleticism and its refinement and if it weren’t for some creative and determined people then we would have lost the breed.

Start off small Many of the members of the American Trakehner Association have been around for years (and we love that you’ve been loyal to the breed!); they know the ins and outs of inspections, awards, what happens when, what needs to be done when etc. As a new member you should reach out to some of the veterans and ask them what you can do to help. The most important thing to remember when you decide to volunteer is that everyone else is a volunteer too. We work together because we love the breed.

Think outside of the box Sometimes, geographically speaking, it can be hard to connect with other ATA members. The great thing about technology is that physical distance shouldn’t deter you from volunteering. The ATA needs members who will do some research and write about what is happening in the Trakehner world. You can offer to volunteer at an inspection or any other number of things. As a newer member I can say it gets a little overwhelming trying to figure out the different parts the ATA but don’t be afraid because as a new member you bring fresh ideas to the table and that is what will help raise awareness and inter-

Competitor profile: Robin Brueckmann

“I am not talented. I just work hard. There are no shortcuts. That’s it.” –Robin Brueckmann This was the first thing Robin Brueckmann said to me during our phone conversation. I was shocked that achieving success was that simple and that difficult. Robin has been a professional dressage rider since 1979. She has ridden many horses from many breeds but her current mount, Radetzky, a Trakehner gelding, is a dressage superstar.

Their most recent achievement was winning the 2014 USEF/PHR Zone Champion for Grand Prix. Robin partnership with him began when she bought Radetzky in 2007 sight unseen; since then the duo have competed in multiple international events including several Paralympic games. However Robin isn’t just a competitor, she is also an active clinician, judge and has about ten students that she regularly teaches. For Robin, the journey to international success has been one filled with hardship and tough decisions.

Robin built him a playground with various trail style items. She made sure to do bravery training with him every day and he slowly made progress. One thing that Radetzky found soothing was hugging a barrel. “The first time he did this I thought I was going to be killed.” Once she realized the movement was harmless Robin let him hug barrels as a reward. During one such training session a friend of Robin’s (who is a veterinarian) noticed that Radetzky’s barrel hugging seemed to be a relief from all of the structured tasks Robin asked of him. “Now, Radetzky puts his foot on things when he is frightened; I have to be careful of what I let him stand near as he is likely to put his foot on it.”

Although unconventional, it is clear that Robin’s consistent and thorough training methods work because Radetzky is slated to earn his *Ps* within the next year.

Robin uses her training methods with all of her horses and based on her numerous successes the way she trains works. Not only that, it helps her horses become used to the unexpected which means that the show atmosphere is less likely to agitate them. During Shequin’s (Robin’s four-year-old Oldenburg mare) second police horse training event the mare willingly walked through fire. I’m not sure many horses would do that; let alone a horse as young as Shequin. Because of Robin’s persistence the mare walked through the fire without fear and that is what makes Robin stand out as a competitor.

Robin’s competitive career has taught her that one must always stay positive and persevere.

She firmly believes that hard work yields success but also says that being patient is important especially when working with horses. Robin currently has three horses and she believes that keeping a small string of horses is the wisest choice because it gives the rider the opportunity to really get to know each horse. Part of her training regimen includes actively cross training.

Robin’s success is a reminder that you can burg mare to police horse training event. Tannehauser*

By Alison McDonald A, Enter Collected Canter. X, Halt, Salute. Proceed to have an illustrious dressage career. Tannehauser *Pg* (aka “Timmy”) began his life as a wild and rebellious black colt and blossomed into a dressage Grand Prix schoolmaster.

Tannehauser’s dam, Tansanita vom Castell (aka “Tanzy”) by Avignon II out of Tansania was purchased

by Nolan Armstrong of Sycamore Sporthorses in early 1994. Nolan and his wife, Carmen, went to Castell Imperator-Hof Trakehners in Sorento, IL looking for a broodmare to buy and ended up coming home with two mares. Their daughter, Becky Armstrong, DVM, advised them on the purchases and their growing foray of breeding Trakehners. Tanzy, foaled in late 1988, was a bit older and had not been bred nor – as Ricarda Barton noted – had she been ridden very much as she was quite green. As a result, Nolan turned Tanzy over to Becky to get her started under saddle and simultaneously get her bred. Becky competed her at Training Level dressage with mid-60’s scores that summer but Tanzy’s forte and preference was clearly jumping over fences! Becky and Tanzy did x-country schooling and jumping fences for fun but never competed in a horse trial. Tanzy was a beautiful, medium-sized mare but she really needed a stallion with a superb riding horse temperament and outstanding gaits to complement her attributes and they found that in Enrico Caruso*Ps*E*; however, getting her bred was not easy. Deb Tyler of Tylord Farms hung in there that summer of 1994 and continued to ship semen despite the bizarre and novel things Tanzy’s ovaries kept doing! Nine – yes, nine – shipments of fresh semen later and Tanzy was finally pregnant. Whew!

Eleven uneventful months later, Tannehauser (aka “Timmy”) was born on July 31, 1995, with no one in attendance. Tanzy liked it that way - no human ever witnessed any of her foalings! Sycamore Sporthorses had two other colts also born that year so it was quite like the three musketeers having them all grow up together. Approaching the summer of their two-year old year, Nolan and Carmen decided to sell all three colts – now geldings – in the ATA Auction in Columbus, OH that fall (1997). All three geldings went home with new owners, and Timmy was the second highest priced horse at the auction – selling for $7,900 to Laura Wharton-Mero.

Laura took him home to Georgia and broke him as a three-year-old the next year. Their very first competition was a breed show where Timmy ended up winning American Bred High Score with a 71%. Laura proceeded to take Timmy quite successfully up the dressage levels from Training Level to Intermediaire I by the spring of 2003, winning the majority of their classes with many scores in the 70s. Everyone at Laura’s barn loved Timmy and some were even lucky enough to learn some movements here and there when she might teach a lesson on him.

Kristen Cooper of St. Charles, IL saw Laura and Timmy competing at Paxton Farm's Spring Classic in May 2003. By July she was his proud new owner and competing in shows. Kristen, an adult amateur rider, took her time with him and they reached Grand Prix competition level by 2008. ships, and several CDI competitions.

Timmy even performed an exhibition ride at the Denver Stock Show.

In October 2009, Alison Bush (McDonald) bought Timmy from Kristen Cooper as a prospect for the National Young Adult Brentina Cup (now called U-25 Division). During the 2011 show season, Alison and Timmy qualified for the Brentina Cup, which was held as part of the USEF Festival of Champions in Gladstone, NJ. They ended up 8th overall in a highly competitive class.

Alison and Timmy went on to compete in multiple Grand Prix competitions, earning scores as high as 70.5% and Alison’s gold medal rider award. When Alison and her husband found out they were expecting their first child, she knew she needed to find another rider who could learn from and enjoy Timmy’s expertise in the dressage arena as much as she had.

Madelyn and Timmy spent the winter of 2015 in Wellington, FL, participating in Lendon Gray’s Winter Intensive Training Program for aspiring young riders and competing at the Global Dressage Festival CDI. Their sleek and polished look earned them Show Chic’s “Best Turnout Award” during the CDI jog, besting over 60 horse and rider combinations. The pair is striving to qualify for the North American Junior Young Rider Championships for Region 2 this summer.

As fate would have it, a local junior young rider, Madelyn Guthrie, was looking to graduate from her pony level competitions up to the junior competition level. She began leasing Timmy during the Fall of 2013 and their show career launched the next summer, with their debut test at Third Level scoring a 69+%.

In October 2014, Alison and Timmy journeyed to the annual American Trakehner Association Convention in Batavia, OH, where Timmy was recognized with the ATA’s performance gold (*Pg*) award for his success at the Grand Prix dressage competition level.

Becky Armstrong (now ATA president) was reunited with Timmy after almost 17 years apart to present the award to the amazing black gelding. Alison and Timmy also enjoyed performing their Grand Prix musical freestyle for the gala portion of the convention.

As Timmy turns 20 years old this summer, the hope is that he continues to be known not only for his distinguished and bountiful dressage career, but also for his charming and well-mannered temperament. He has patiently taught countless riders over the years what it means to really ride dressage. Timmy is the sweetest gelding you will find. A true Trakehner gentleman.

Challenges to The American Trakehner Magazine I was called in by the ATA to help get this “spring” issue finished up and sent to the printer. I and a handful of ATA members are moving heaven and earth to get it done, but by the time you read this, it will be the end of September, and your Convention is just around the corner. No longer spring, or even summer. It got me thinking about magazines, how challenging they are to do, especially to a decent standard; what they mean to people; and whether those things balance out: do they have enough value to justify all that work, not to mention cost?

I think about this a lot, since my life for over twenty years has revolved around creating and publishing some print magazines for horse people. I publish Warmblood Stallions of North America, which has served as the ATA’s official stallion magazine for the past two years—and it’s a question I’m faced with every day in one form or another. Since the explosion of the internet, it’s a question every publisher thinks about.

The ATA is thinking about it too. The spring issue did not come out on time because there is no longer a volunteer to do the layout. There is no one currently acting as general editor either, and your Publications Chairperson has stepped down.

Karen Stopek has held this position for a couple years, and will hang up her hat after this issue.

And yet, ATA members seem to love their magazine. They get it, they read it, they’re proud of it.

Your ATA Board will have to make a decision about whether to continue the magazine or not—but ultimately the decision is yours. The magazine will continue only if the members care enough. We all know that’s true, and you’ve heard that from every organization you’ve ever been part of. At what point do you step up and say, “OK, it’s my turn, and I think I can help with this”?

I thought it might be helpful to share my thoughts about the value of magazines in general, and the American Trakehner in particular.

The general consensus is that “print is dead.” Magazines are on the way out, because they’ve been replaced by the internet.

No one reads magazines any more. So sad.

A few years ago, someone said to me, “I know I’m the only one left, but I just love to feel a book in my hands.” Soon after, someone else said, “I’m probably the only one, but I love to hold a glossy magazine.” Then another one: “I think I’m the only one anymore, but I don’t want to read a magazine online— I want to hold it.” I bet I’ve heard that from twenty or thirty people in the last few years—each of them believing they were some sort of unique throwback for liking print. So if you think you’re the only one—you’re in lots of good company! Turns out, people still love to get a printed magazine in the mail, love to put their feet up and read it, love to dog-ear the corners, love being able to hold it.

But print is expensive, and the costs have to be paid for somehow. Unless the members of the ATA want to pay for the entire cost of their magazine with membership dues, its survival will depend on advertisers who are willing to pay for ads. And that’s a problem. Selling magazine ads—whether for my magazine, or the American Trakehner, I’m sure even for People Magazine—has become incredibly difficult. The reason is mostly because the perception is that magazine ads don’t “work” any more. The results have become almost impossible

to measure, for the types of ads that used to be very measurable.

Ten years ago, if you ran a print ad with your phone number in it (like a stallion ad or a horse for sale), you’d get phone calls—or not. You counted the phone calls, you counted the sales, and you knew whether the ad worked. No more. When is the last time you telephoned someone because you saw their ad? No one does that any more.

Does that mean your ad failed, that ads have stopped working? I don’t believe it does. Let me ask another question: you’re reading this magazine, and have gotten as far as page 14—have you noticed any of the ads? Some people (like my husband) literally don’t even see ads, but most people do, especially if it’s something they’re interested in. Maybe a stallion caught your eye, or you’re interested to see what that breeder is producing these days, or there’s a new product that might solve a problem for you. If you notice an ad, then the ad has not failed. The ad has gotten its message out, has created name-recognition for the farm or stallion or product or service. If it’s something you’re interested in, it has probably sent you online to follow up and learn more. That is what defines its success. Print magazines are still being loved and pored over—and that means print ads are still out there doing their job.

If you have a business that is connected with Trakehner horses, the American Trakehner is very likely your very best place to advertise. It’s reaching your target market, like-minded folks who understand what you have. Food for thought: do you believe that? Can you make the leap from “ATA members love their magazine and read it” to “My ad in the American Trakehner is working, even I can’t measure the results the way I used to.” Are you willing, if you have such a business, to pay for advertising?

I think some consider ad spending in the American Trakehner to be just charity, supporting an organization they care about, but it just might be a good thing for your business too—even though your phone probably won’t ring off the hook. It’s a leap of faith (or a leap of reason) to see that readers will get to know who you are and what you have, and will go visit your website, or Like you on Facebook, or remember you when they are shopping for their next Trakehner or have a mare to breed.

What the ATA can do to support those advertisers in return is to build the best magazine you can. This is totally possible, because you have passionate readers. “All” you need is one of those passionate people who is also creative, good at organizing, inspiring to other people, and willing to spearhead a magazine rejuvenation!

What you need is a team—and now is the time. I’d like to recommend a minimum of three people, and—this is key!—it should be three people who can work together. Three people who will encourage each other and share the load.

Nobody knows better than I do that putting a magazine together is challenging job, let alone maintaining a high, professional-quality standard that makes the ATA and the Trakehner breed look stellar issue after issue. My own magazine comes out only once a year, but it is still a full-time, year-‘round job, and more than full time in the fall and winter.

But you have an opportunity here, to create something truly special. Who’s up for it!?

Herzensdieb: Refinement, Rideability and Quality

Herzensdieb was the licensing champion and crowd favorite at the 2005 Trakehner licensing in Neumünster, Germany.

Breeding manager Lars Gehrmann commented on his basic gaits with the following words: “movement wouldn’t do it justice: he dances.” Herzensdieb finished the stallion performance test as Reserve Champion and, in the same year, won the Trakehner Championship for 3-year-old stallions. Successful qualifications for the National Championships were further milestones in his training.

Meanwhile, he has trained up to advanced level. The fact that he is passing his natural qualities on to his offspring is reflected in the genetic evaluation of 142 points with 92 percent certainty.

History and resilience In the winter of 1944, only a few survived the dramatic eviction for man and horse across the frozen lagoon and the over 1000 km march to the West. Of the original population of 30,000 animals, only 1,500 horses were left. This was the saddest and hardest selection breeding has ever seen. The surviving mares and stallions were extremely stress-resistant, tough and willing to perform, parameters that guarantee a breeding advantage.

What does this history have to do with Herzensdieb? A lot.

One of the most important stallions of the Trakehner breed was Totilas, born in 1938. The mighty dark brown horse was born in 1938 in East Prussia and, after flight to the west, was used as a sire at the Panker stud farm. This Totilas stock was successfully maintained over decades at the oldest Trakehner stud farm, Gut Panker (1947). This is where Herzensdieb was born in 2003. “In his day, Totilas was one of the most important stallions,” confirmed the stud manager, Ms Veronika von Schöning.

Only the best Trakehner genes The father of the top athlete is the elite stallion Tambour. The noble black stallion combines the best Trakehner performance blood in him and is one of the most influential descendants of the dressage dynasty of dressage stallion Arogno. Besides Herzensdieb, Tambour delivered the stallion performance test winner and German National Champion of Versatility, Herzog. In the estimation of breeding value, Tambour is among the top five percent of all dressage stallions in Germany. Tambour descends from Hohenstein I, who himself was successful in dressage sport up to the Prix St. Georges. Insterbur TSF, Münchhausen TSF, Hochadel and His Highness are just some examples of the immense power of the inheritance refinement of Hohenstein.

Tambour’s mother is the state premium mare and elite mare Tänzerin V (by Consul), who was chosen as the best mare in Schleswig-Holstein and in Warendorf in 1994 at the German National Mare Show as Ia winner. She gave birth to the licensed stallions Travell and Thalys.

In the third generation, the Herzensdieb pedigree boasts the line founder and dressage sire Consul by Swazi xx. The DLG champion and elite stallion of the Trakehner Association delivered several licensed sons, such as the champion stallion Seigneur and Reserve Champion Rockefeller.

Herzensdieb’s mother Herzensfreude is one of the pillars of the breed at the Panker stud farm. This elite Herz lineage is known for the excellent riding characteristics of its offspring. The mother of Herzensfreude, Herzenslust, was champion mare in Schleswig-Holstein and winner of her mare performance test.

In addition, there have been numerous licensed stallions from the H line from Panker stud farm, such as Herzenkönig, Herzbube and Herzfunke. The champion stallion Donauruf bred

by Panker should be mentioned in considering the H line. He was the undisputed champion stallion and crowd favorite at the 50th Trakehner licensing.

Breeding expert Jens Meyer goes into raptures over the beautiful Trakehner - and not without reason. The three-year Herzensdieb daughter, Helmi (owned by Leatherdale Farm), has already been able to come away from the arena as winning mare at several breeding shows. Frahm has been training Helmi for only a short time and gushes that “she is our great new hope.”

“Totilas was an powerful, energetic stallion,” confirmed the stud manager and contemporary witness of the expulsion from Trakenen, Ms Veronika von Schöning. This East Prussian sire is found three times in the pedigree of Herzensdieb, and this is what makes him so valuable.

Master rider Johann Hinnemann is equally enthusiastic: “I’m a Herzensdieb fan because I’ve already had some offspring from him and still do. What I’ve seen thus far in offspring from Herzensdieb is truly something special. “

Outstanding quality for dressage “A dressage horse of the first order,” agreed Herzensdieb’s rider Steffen Frahm and stallion owner Jens Meyer. The stallion came to Frahm for training as a five-year-old. “He made a trusting bond with the rider and wishes to do everything right,” Frahm said.

Because of his charm, spectators, judges and breeders alike are enthusiastic about him. “With his intelligence and rideability, he learned the technical lessons such as flying changes and half passes very quickly. That’s why preparing him for the upper levels is so fun,” said Frahm about the training.

A strong breeding performance Herzensdieb is a refiner in the form of an elite stallion. In recent years, he has delivered outstanding foals. His very first foal crop has earned him an excellent breeding value of 150 points.

He passes his high rideability on to his children. Herzensdieb’s daughter, Elfenzauber (dam of Budde Brock), yielded the best test result at the Hanoverian mare performance test in Elmlohe. Herzensdieb sired two mares presented in the Herwartvon-der-Decken Show. The Herzensdieb daughter Heartbreaker earned a very respectable second place for the proud owner from Australia.

When asked about Herzensdieb’s significant ancestors such as Hohenstein and the highly concentrated bloodlines from the Trakehner stallion Totilas, Hilberath responded, “Herzensdieb is a very tough horse and passes on his mental strength in a positive way. All the Herzensdieb offspring that I have seen so far make a very bold impression. In addition, they are extremely rideable and performance-ready horses. Precisely because he has this noble ancestry, he passes this nobility on to his offspring. He is an absolute refining stallion.”

Due to the attractive gaits of Herzensdieb’s in-demand offspring, the international master trainer is convinced that “the affable elite stallion is passing on the quality of the basic gaits but also their potential for collection.”

When asked about further siring performance, Hilberath said: “He is indeed very well received in warmblood breeding.

He produces big horses with a very good and correct foundation, and they all move very elastically and uphill. Herzensdieb is also wonderfully uphill built. You can set him up and see how correct he is. And they can hardly make him more beautiful. So, as I’ve said, I’ve seen many very good Herzensdieb offspring.”

“It is no coincidence that many reputable training facilities, such as those of Johann Hinnemann and Klaus Balkenhof, have stocked up with Herzensdieb offspring and been very satisfied with them. I hear that the horses give glimpses of their talents very early on in the in-hand work. So I think that we will be hearing quite a lot from these offspring in the future,” said the Herzensdieb fan Jonny Hilberath.

Five daughters of Herzensdieb have become winners at mare shows. Two sons were licensed in Neumünster (Laxdoyen

by Herzensdieb-Inster Graditz) and in Verden (Herzenswunsch

by Herzensdieb-White Star). The father Tambour, a premium stallion and Trakehner elite stallion, sired two licensed sons. The mother St.Pr./ El.St. Herzensfreude earned her SLP with a record overall score of 9.11. The grandmother St.Pr./El.St. Herzenslust is half sister to the premium stallion Herzkristall (by Goldino). In all his offspring, a type and rideability refinement can be seen.

Master trainer Jonny Hilberath is impressed with Herzensdieb “He is well along his way in training,” Hilberath said. “His offspring are making a splash. It is striking how many offspring of this stallion can be seen in foal markets, auctions and breed licensings. In young horse and novice tests, an improbably high number of Herzensdieb offspring are appearing. He is leaving an outstanding legacy in Trakehner breeding, Hanoverian breeding and overall in warmblood horse breeding.”

HANCOCK is by Imperio out of St.Pr.u.Pr.St. mare Herzlicht II (by Elite stallion Münchhausen). This 2009 black Trakehner stallion won the 70-day Stallion Testing in Marbach, Germany, and is approved for breeding by the Trakehner, Hanoverian, Oldenburg, Westfalen, Rhineland and Polish breed associations. He was awarded Premium Stallion status at the Trakehner licensing in Neumünster 2011.

His pedigree combines the blood of the Bundeschampion and dressage Grand Prix champion Imperio with the Reserve World Champion Münchhausen.

Hancock’s dam was the champion of the 2003 central mare inspection in Rhineland passing with a superior mare performance test.

The 2014 Karl-Heinz Barton Trophy was presented posthumously to David Beattie at the 2014 Annual Meeting in Cincinnatti, Ohio.

The Gerda Friedrichs Memorial Award: This award was originally established in 1975 as the Gerda Friedrichs Breeders Award. Having been named a Distinguished Member of the ATA, Mrs. Friedrichs established this award and began giving what had formerly been her membership dues as the award. In 1983 Mr. & Mrs. Gregory Chandler of Penmerryl Farm, Greenville, VA, donated a trophy to take the place of the monetary award. In 1987 the award was renamed in memory of Gerda Friedrichs (Dec. 12, 1910–Feb. 21, 1987). Near the end of her life, it was Gerda’s wish to use this award to give recognition to the broodmares and foals of the Trakehner breed in North America.

Therefore the Gerda Friedrichs Memorial Award is now a perpetual trophy presented annually to a member of the ATA for outstanding breeding success of an ATA studbook registered Trakehner broodmare and her foals. www.AmericanTrakehner.com

TRIBUTE 1986-2015

By Butow, out of Tosca II by Harnisch Bred by Guenter Bertelmann, ON Owned by Tribute Associates Tribute touched many people's lives and we appreciate all the wonderful friendships that were formed while breeding, boarding and campaigning this fine Trakehner stallion. All who had the opportunity to meet Tribute were able to appreciate his calm and relaxed demeanor and positive disposition.

Tribute was humanely laid to rest in late January 2015, due to complications from congestive heart failure.

Everyone who got a chance to see him was always impressed with his expressive movement, overall attractiveness and talent. He was always so noble and a pleasure to be around. We were always very proud to have a Trakehner stallion with such good traits.

We all are very grateful for the many years we were able to spend with Tribute. He will be greatly missed, Tribute was loved by many. However his "light" lives on in the hearts of the owners of his offspring. This is the lasting gift he left for all of us.

2. This is False. Offspring by an OSB stallion out of a PSB-B mare will be registered in ORB-B, Anglo-Trakehner division. However, these foals with a PSB dam are eligible to apply for OSB inspection at maturity. If approved for the OSB, then their foals, with an OSB sire or dam, would be registered in the ORB-A as purebreds.

3. The answer is d, not at all.

A horse must have 50% Trakehner bloodlines to be registered in the OAB, Appendix. The Jockey Club Thoroughbred sire is not approved, so his foals out of an OSB mare could be registered in OAB-B. However, a PSB mare is not considered the same as a studbook mare (OSB) and her pedigree is always less than 100% Trakehner. Thus her offspring by a JC Thoroughbred stallion would have less than the required 50% Trakehner bloodlines and not be eligible for ATA registrations. Horses not eligible for ATA registration can obtain a certificate of pedigree from the ATA. This will document the pedigree and provide needed information, if a filly should be eligible for PSB inspection at maturity.
