Our Mainstage season lineup traverses a landscape of powerful stories that explore the fantasy, the reality, the absurdity and the

beauty of the American Dream. We'll meet a young Vietnamese couple who find one another in America in 1975 in playwright Qui Nguyen’s audacious, romantic road trip comedy, VIETGONE. In Lauren Gunderson’s SILENT SKY we go on an inspiring journey through space and time as a female astronomer defies presuffrage-era barriers. In Dominique Morisseau’s SKELETON CREW, blue-collar America is given a vibrantly honest voice in a Detroit auto plant during the Great Recession. The World Premiere of THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS, written by St. Pete’s own Natalie Symons, brings us two ordinary, awkward social misfits who hilariously stumble together toward something extraordinary. Joshua Harmon’s razorsharp wit returns to our stage in the searing dark comedy about college, race and privilege in ADMISSIONS. We conclude our dreamscape with the 19-20 American Legacy Series selection, the Tony-Award winning rock musical about an American family, trying to find stable ground in NEXT TO NORMAL. In 2020, the American Stage in the Park tradition continues under the stars at Demens Landing with the rockin’ rhythms of FOOTLOOSE.

VIETGONE is the kind of play that a lot of Asian-Americans have been waiting for. After seeing our identity and culture stereotyped, clichéd and yellow-faced for decades – centuries, really – we’re finally getting plays with strong Asian-American characters who are heroes and lovers with strength, depth and empathy. It’s incredibly affirming to see this new generation of storytelling.

This play is an epic journey through deeply moving themes told in an exciting, electric way.

The first of these themes that jumps out is bravery. The play opens with Quang riding a rusted-out, found-in-a-barn motorcycle halfway across the country to steam himself onto a plane to get on a boat to drop into enemy territory risking torture and death just to be reunited with his family.

That’s incredibly brave.

We also have Tong, who is working hard to create a new life in a strange world. She’s learning a new language, exploring the town, signing up for classes, living with a foster family and dating someone she can barely communicate with. She’s moving forward with an open mind and that’s incredibly brave.

Resilience is another theme that’s core to the story of the play. Whatever plan you have for your life – be it to own a business or run a marathon or be a parent – what happens when that plan derails, disappears, or comes crashing down? How do you find a new way to achieve that dream? And how, then, is achieving it more rewarding because you fought harder?

And I can’t talk about themes without mentioning love – this is, after all, a love story. Everyone in this play is fighting for love in one way or another.

Qui has written complex, emotional characters who lost everything, but make the choice to open their hearts and be vulnerable, to put themselves at risk and love again.

Underneath all of this is the classic American story of making a new life in a new world. VIETGONE is a first-generation immigrant story told through the eyes of the second. It’s not a Vietnam war story with its politics and baggage; it’s an American story of courage, strength, and resilience. And though it’s set in 1975, it’s a timeless story – people were living through this same experience in the 1850’s, the 1950’s and will continue to in the 2050’s and beyond.

And as Quang says, these immigrant and refugee stories aren’t necessarily a mistake – they’re not something to always be pitied or apologized for. They’re to be cherished, celebrated and something to be proud of.

QUI NGUYEN KEEPS IT IN THE FAMILY WITH ‘VIETGONE’ The following is an excerpt from interview from American Theatre Magazine in February 2017 with playwright Qui Nguyen “Everyone deserves a chance to see themselves onstage. With VIETGONE, I wanted to address the huge lack of sexually powerful, driven, and complex Asian-American male and female characters on our stages. I wanted to see a sexy Asian male and a sexy Asian female be sexy for something other than being “exotic.” And I wanted to make something that a young “yella” kid could see and feel proud of themselves after seeing it. In response, I remember a specific email I received during the South Coast Rep run of VIETGONE from someone who wrote, “As an Asian-American kid, it feels like the world keeps telling me that I’m supposed to be weak. But when I saw VIETGONE, it made me feel strong.” That’s the heartbeat of why I do what I do.

I’ve always wanted to tell my family’s stories. However, my first attempt at doing so was absolutely horrendous. I had never written a play before, so I had no voice as a writer; all I could do was imitate scribes that I liked. At that time, the writer that influenced me the most was David Henry Hwang. I imitated him the best I could, wrote the play, and surprisingly it was produced Off-Broadway a few years after I graduated. When my family finally got to see it, I looked over at my mom proudly and asked, “So what’d you think?” She responded bluntly, “It doesn’t sound like you.” I was shocked. “What do you mean it doesn’t sound like me? You’ve never read anything I’ve ever written.” I thought she was referring to my voice as a writer. What she meant was, literally, it didn’t sound like her son. She told me, “You’re mischievous and you’re funny and you like to goof around, and this play doesn’t show any of that.” My response to her was a very mature, “Screw you, Mom. If you really want to see me be all those things, I’ll write those things, and I’ll show you how much you won’t like it.”

Thus VIETGONE is basically the anti-Miss Saigon. I don’t mean that it’s contradictory to the musical or even a reaction to it, but it’s about the Asian-American characters being the ones with agency over the narrative.

They’re not a prop for the typical straight-white-male lead to learn from or to save. It’s not their story. It’s our story. We get to be the heroes.

When I hear stories about my mother’s fortitude, about the shit that she’s gone through, it always gives me perspective. I’m like, “Oh, I had a shitty day today because I couldn’t finish my draft.” And my parents are like, “Well, our shitty day at your age was we lost our entire country and everyone we knew.” My mom’s 4’11”, she’s pretty, and her English isn’t great, so people don’t expect much from her. But when I think of stuff like in 1988, when my mom’s brother and his family died trying to escape Vietnam, leaving their youngest son stranded alone in a refugee camp in the Philippines, I remember how hard she fought to bring him to America.

When she was told that process would take years due to all sorts of red tape and bureaucracy, I witnessed her transform from my cute mom into an unstoppable force. She contacted our governor. She contacted our senator. She contacted the press and turned her quest for her nephew into the feel-good story of Arkansas in 1988 when she finally brought him over to America a few days before Thanksgiving of that year. What she was told would take at least two years to process ended up taking only two months because of her tenacity. Though she’s small, she’s incredibly strong. Whenever I sit down to write a female character, I’m always writing some version of her or my grandmother; that’s why all my female characters end up being badasses.

Jerid is excited to be in his 10th season with American Stage! After attending Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he studied Film Production with an emphasis in Art Direction, he put his knack for imitation and improvisation to use at Disneyland Resort’s entertainment department. He then moved to Florida, where he has worked as a Scenic Designer, Properties Master, and Scenic Dresser for many popular Tampa Bay theatres and universities. On occasion, Jerid is also an Assistant Director or Art Director for theatrical productions, feature films, short films, and television commercials. Chris is a Designer, Programmer, and Technician for all things Theatrical Lighting in the Tampa Bay Area. Chris moved down from Ohio at the end of 2012 after graduating from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatrical Design and Technology. Since then, he has freelanced across Central Florida, wearing many different hats to realize lighting on shows for Busch Gardens, University of South Florida, Hillsborough Community College, Home Shopping Network, Florida Studio Theatre, American Stage, and Ruth Eckerd Hall. This will be his fifth show designing in the Raymond James Theatre for American Stage.

He is very excited to be working with this fun group of passionate artisans.

HI-T3C (Mr. Butler) is a music producer located in Florida. He strongly specialize in the genres of Hip Hop, R&B, Pop, EDM, as well as Film and Video Game Scoring. He serves as the CEO of Pure Kreativity L.L.C, which is a multimedia entertainment company that seeks to provide profitable, quality, audio to a diverse, international consumer group.

Dan is a Director, Fight Director, Intimacy Director, and Movement Specialist based in Tampa, FL. Their Intimacy and/or Fight Direction has appeared at Joe's Pub, Asolo Repertory Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre, Urbanite Theatre, Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, American Stage, Jobsite Theatre, St Petersburg Opera, Studio 620, Tampa Repertory Theatre, and Three Bone Theatre.

They have directed for Stageworks, Tampa Shakespeare Festival, TRT2, Theatre USF, and they are the current director of UNTO THESE HILLS Outdoor Drama. They hold a BFA from the University of Michigan, and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, and currently teach at the University of South Florida. They are a Certified Intimacy Director and Lead Instructor with Intimacy Directors International, and a Certified Teacher and Fight Director with the Society of American Fight Directors. They are a member of the Screen Actors Guild and an Associate Member of Stage Directors and Choreographers.

Stephanie joined American Stage in 2015 as its artistic and business leader. She has directed the company’s productions of MAMMA MIA!, MISS BENNET: CHRISTMAS AT PEMBERLEY, MARJORIE PRIME, THE INVISIBLE HAND, GOOD PEOPLE, INTIMATE APPAREL, and THE 39 STEPS and appeared in last season's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. Previously, she founded Capital Stage in Sacramento, CA, where she was the Producing Artistic Director for nine years. She has been recognized with the Arts Innovation Award from the Sacramento Community Regional Foundation, the Arts Management Excellence Award from the Arts & Business Council, and in 2014, she was presented with a proclamation from the City of Sacramento, honoring her years of service to the arts in the region. She is a current member of the Nonprofit Leadership Center's CEO Circle and the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay's CEO Leadership program. Stephanie holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Theatre and in Government from CSU Sacramento, and an MFA in directing from University of Idaho. She is also a certified leadership coach and personal trainer and has been a member of Actors’ Equity Association since 2001.

RACHEL HARRISON*

Rachel is in her 7th season with American Stage, where she serves as both Production Stage Manager and Production Coordinator. She has designed sound for numerous productions, including THE PITMEN PAINTERS, JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE, A RAISIN IN THE SUN, PIPELINE, THE ROOMMATE and LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT. Rachel recently added a sound design credit at Urbanite Theatre in Sarasota, with the world premiere of Hannah Benitez’ new play DIKE. Rachel is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association, The Stage Manager’s Association, and USITT, and is an advocate/ member of Intimacy Directors International.

KAYLIE HOROWITZ

ASSISTANT COSTUME DESIGNER

Kaylie is an actor, voice actor, and costume crafter originally from Lakeland, FL. She received her BFA in performance from Auburn University (War Eagle!), and recently finished her acting and production apprenticeship at American Stage.

Kaylie has been building costumes and cosplays for the last several years, and is incredibly excited to be serving as an assistant designer on her first American Stage production post-apprenticeship.

She is working as a props artist for THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS, and recently costume designed THE GAP AND THE GLUE. Previous performance credits include Ensemble in MAMMA MIA!, Esme in THE GAP AND THE GLUE (American Stage) and the titular character of ANTIGONE. Kaylie would like to thank her friends, family and the American Stage team for their continued support and guidance.

Benjamin is returning to American Stage with this show after working with Mary Zimmerman earlier this year on her acclaimed METAMORPHOSES with runs at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California and The Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis. American Stage credits include directing BETWEEN RIVERSIDE & CRAZY, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, INFORMED CONSENT and 4000 MILES as well as performing in THE INVISIBLE HAND. He is the former Producing Artistic Director of Big Idea Theatre in Sacramento.

Other favorite directing credits include AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, LOVE & INFORMATION (Capital Stage); DRIVING MISS DAISY (Sacramento Theatre Co); AS YOU LIKE IT, ARCADIA, NO EXIT, and ANTONY & CLEOPATRA (Big Idea). Benjamin will be returning to American Stage in November to perform in SILENT SKY by Lauren Gunderson.

QUI NGUYEN, PLAYWRIGHT

Qui Nguyen is a playwright, screenwriter and co-founder of the OBIE Award-winning Vampire Cowboys Theatre Company of NYC. His plays include VIETGONE (2016 Harold and Mimi Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award, 2016 LADCC Tim Schmitt Award, 2016 Edward M. Kennedy Prize finalist); WAR IS F**KING AWESOME (Frederick Loewe Award); SHE KILLS MONSTERS (2014 AATE Distinguished Play Award, 2012 GLAAD Media Award nom); SOUL SAMURAI (2009 GLAAD Media Award nom), and the critically acclaimed Vampire Cowboys shows: THE INEXPLICABLE REDEMPTION OF AGENT G, ALICE IN SLASHERLAND, FIGHT GIRL BATTLE WORLD, MEN OF STEEL, SIX ROUNDS OF VENGEANCE and LIVING DEAD IN DENMARK. Recent awards include a "2016 Daytime Emmy Award" for Outstanding Writing in a Preschool Animated Program ("Peg+Cat") and a "2015 New York Community Trust Helen Merrill Playwriting Award".

He is a proud member of the WGA, The Dramatists Guild, The Playwrights Center, Ensemble Studio Theatre and The Ma-Yi Writers Lab. He’s an alumnus of New Dramatists and Youngblood.

Bridging the gap between academic studies and real-world experience, the American Stage apprenticeship program is committed to developing the next generation of theatre professionals. With focuses on production and acting, technical theatre, arts administration, and arts education, these year-long, immersive apprenticeships empower young people to make an impact and build a career in the performing arts.

TARAN HAYNES ACTING AND PRODUCTION

Hailing from Anchorage, Alaska, Taran is a recent graduate of UAA where he received his BA in Theatre with Departmental Honors. Taran has acted in twelve productions over his tenue at UAA, performing roles such as Lombard from AND THEN THERE WERE NONE; Einstein from PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE; Tom Kreider from RADIUM GIRLS; and even Not-Dead-Fred from SPAMALOT. Beyond acting, Taran made his directorial debut directing Bryony Lavery’s FROZEN at UAA. A promising playwright, Taran has written three 10-minute plays, a one-act, and co-created two devised plays which both were seen on UAA’s stages. Eager to transition from the academic to the professional world, Taran is excited to join American Stage as a 2019/20 Acting & Production Apprentice. It is his great honor to work with and learn from all the incredible artists at the American Stage.

KIANNA JACKSON

ACTING AND PRODUCTION

Kianna is very excited to be joining the team of American Stage as an Acting & Production Apprenticeship. She recently graduated from Florida Southern College and received a BFA in Theatre Performance with a minor in Communications. Some of her favorite roles throughout the years of performing have been Brooke Ashton in NOISES OFF; Vibrata in A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM; Liat in SOUTH PACIFIC; and Ensemble Dancer in KISS ME, KATE. She looks forward to growing more as an actor through the apprenticeship and to work with the professionals and fellow apprentices of American Stage.

SKYE LINDBERG ACTING AND PRODUCTION

Skye is thrilled to be an Acting and Production Apprentice with American Stage for their 2019-2020 Season. A Washington DC/Virginia native, she is taking the leap by moving to sunny St. Petersburg to pursue her passions with an incredible theatre. She has most recently appeared as Paulette in LEGALLY BLONDE (Small Town Stars Theater Company) and Valet in NO EXIT (Dark Horse Theatre Company). Other favorite credits include Beth in MUSICAL THERAPY (Capital Fringe Festival, Best Musical Winner), Nicole in WE FOUND THE WILD THINGS (Who What Where Theatre Collective) and Mayella Ewell in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (Little Theatre of Alexandria).

She is a graduate of George Mason University and holds a BA in Theater, with a Dance Minor. She previously served as the Media Relations Associate at Arena Stage. Skye is eager to learn and grow with the rest of the apprentice team, and is even more thankful to collaborate on important work being brought to American Stage.

JOHN PEREZ ACTING AND PRODUCTION

John is a recent graduate of the University of West Florida (BFA Musical Theatre) and could not be more excited to be joining the American Stage team! Selected credits include Che in EVITA; Piragua Guy in IN THE HEIGHTS; Husband/CPA in SEE WHAT I WANNA SEE; Mitch Mahoney and Barfee in SPELLING BEE; Man 2 in SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD; and Ewart/Barbershop in THE MUSIC MAN. He has also appeared in original works, such as EL WIZ and the St. Pete-centric SUNSHINE CITY (by Dewey DavisThompson and Tom Sivak.) Always the student, John is excited to continue the opportunity to learn and hone his skills, especially alongside an amazing team of artists!

Lyle is from Factoryville, Pennsylvania and recently graduated from York College of Pennsylvania with a BA in Theatre Arts. In his time at York he played Louis XVI in MARIE ANTOINETTE by David Adjmi and Charles/ William in OR, by Liz Duffy Adams; he also directed THIRST by Eugene O’Neill and JAMES FRANCO AND ME: AN UNAUTHORIZED SATIRE

by Kevin Broccoli. Last summer, he was able to be a teaching artist at Baltimore Center Stage. After seeing how powerful arts education can be Lyle knew he wanted to continue to pursue it, which is what brings him to American Stage for the next season as the Education and Outreach Apprentice. Lyle is excited to be a part of theatre with such a long and rich history like American Stage, and he can’t wait to join the team in September

ALYSSA BAUMGARDNER

ARTS ADMINISTRATION

Alyssa recently graduated with honors and a meritorious thesis from The University of Northern Colorado with a B.A. in Musical Theatre. Soon after starting college, Alyssa fell in love with administration, directing, dramaturgy and producing. She worked as an assistant director, dramaturge and dialect coach for productions at UNC and The Little Theatre of the Rockies as well as directing and self-producing her own productions of MEDEA and THE SEAGULL. Her senior year she served as the artistic director for The Underground Theatre Project, a student group that helps develop and produce new student work, and was awarded the "David and Dawn Grapes Director’s Award" for Excellence in Theatre. Alyssa is overjoyed to be a part of American Stage and the St. Petersburg community and looks forward to learning from administrators who produce excellent theatre and run a trusted business.

Wedeline has been involved in the performing arts from a very young age, gracing the stage through musical theater, choral music, and even dance. Wedeline thoroughly enjoys working with children and youth, serving as a music teacher, teaching artist, and vocal director.

Now residing in Atlanta, Georgia, Wedeline is very excited to return to the Bay Area where her love for theater began on the stages of Blake High School and the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. Wedeline looks forward to growing as an Arts Leader through her fellowship with American Stage.
