THE ITALIAN AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEMORIAL MASS Members of the Italian American Chamber of Commerce attended a memorial Mass honoring the organization’s deceased members at Holy Family Church on Sunday, November 5, 2017. The Mass was officiated by Fr. Pino Licciardi and Fr. Stephen Wolf. The distinguished list of deceased members includes three past presidents of the Italian American Cultural Society: Martin (Reno) Garagiola, Anthony Sanfemio, and Frank Palazzolo. The IACS is a proud member of the Italian American Chamber of Commerce and was represented by President Sandra Tornberg. Paul Calcaterra read a poem “We Remember Them” by Shaun O’Keefe to memorialize the deceased. We Remember Them In the rising of the sun, and its going down, We remember them In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, We remember them In the opening of buds and in the warmth of summer, We remember them In the rustling of leaves and the beauty of autumn We remember them In the beginning of the year and when it ends, We remember them When we are weary and in need of strength, We remember them When we have joys we yearn to share, We remember them So long as we live, they shall live, for they are now part of us as, We remember them.

Italian American Cultural Society attendance records. Our bocce leagues were in full swing during the summer, and members gathered to play cards during the fall and winter months. Members were invited to four General Membership meetings at which they received complimentary meals and received updates about the state of the IACS. In addition we introduced monthly dinner dances.

SANDRA TORNBERG Since the publication of our November issue, the IACS family has endured a devastating loss. Curtis W. Smith, beloved husband of our longtime employee Barbara Smith, passed away suddenly on November 2 on what was to be her last day of work before retirement. Barbara and her family remain in our hearts and prayers as they cope with the loss of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. 2017 has been another incredible year at the IACS. We will once again see record profits in our banquet operations under the leadership of Executive Chef and General Manager Alex Lozovoj. For the second consecutive year, our venue was awarded “Best of Weddings “status by theknot.com, an important bridal website. We continued to make much-needed improvements to our facility, upgrading the restrooms and painting the Club Room. More improvements are planned for 2018. We hosted and participated in many events focused on promoting our Italian culture and introducing people to the IACS and our facility. Our popular annual events included Ladies Night Out, the Feast of San Giuseppe, Festa della Repubblica, Detroit Tigers Italian Heritage Day, Summertime Tea Party, Sportsmen’s Dinner, and Fall Craft Show. The Festa Italiana in July was one of the most successful in recent history, breaking

We participated in the Sterling Heights Cultural Exchange and Troy Family Daze International Day, and proudly hosted the Michigan Opera Theatre, the Bellini Opera, and the Italian Film Festival USA. We supported events to commemorate the Week of Italian Language and the Week of Italian Cuisine in the World. Our Italian Education program was very successful, and our children’s choir made their singing debut, performing at the Festa della Repubblica, Festa Italiana, and Troy Daze. Our members will soon be receiving ballots to vote for seven Board of Director positions. This issue contains biographies submitted by many of the candidates. I urge you to read and consider the information carefully and vote for candidates who will bring their talents and enthusiasm to the Board so that we can keep the IACS moving forward. On behalf of the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and IACS staff, I wish all of our members and friends a happy and healthy holiday season.

MARK PAPALE My name is Mark Papale. I am excited to be a candidate for the board of directors here at the Italian American Cultural Society (IACS). It would be a privilege and an honor to serve on our board. I want to run to have the opportunity to be part of an organization that parallels my life long personal passion, my Italian heritage and Italian culture. I want to be part of growing the center by helping realize the vision of a membership building become a reality that provides a place for the members to congregate, keep our library and other opportunities as well as maintain our wonderful Italian roots. I am the grandson of Italian immigrants. This allowed me to experience much of the culture of Italy that

we still practice today. My grandparents immigrated to this country from Italy regions of Lazio, Marche, Basilicata and Campagna arriving in the early part of the 20th century after WWI. I learned from my parents, passed down from their parents, the importance of tradition and family. Today, on Christmas Eve, we make the same fish based dishes my grandparents and parents always made, enjoyed with family and extended family. My children and I make the same hot giardiniera passed down from my grandfather that he made for us and I had made with my father. Sundays are often “spaghetti with sausage and meatballs”, of course with Ma’s recipe. I have also have had the fortune to bring my family to visit our relatives in Italy on more than one occasion. My affiliation to the IACS goes back to the late 80’s when I first came to the center. A few others and I became the founding members of the Avanti Network, a young adult Italian American group. I also took my first Italian class at the IACS at that time. The IACS is where I met my wife of 28 years, Marisa, studying Ital-

ian and participating in the Avanti events. I have supported the center as a paid member for many years while attending as many events as possible. More recently I have volunteered the last couple years to help setup and tear down at Festa Italiana and participated in the Columbus Day parade. Furthermore, I am currently enrolled in advanced Italian classes at the center. In addition, we recently moved into Partridge Creek subdivision last spring. One of the reasons we choose Partridge Creek was the proximity to the IACS. Marisa and I have four children: Nino, Angelo, Stefano and Josephina. Nino has recently graduated from Wayne State University (WSU) Medical school and is in his residency program. Angelo recently graduated from Oakland University in accounting and works at FCA. Stefano is completing his BS at WSU in criminal justice and Josephina is a junior at the International Academy of Macomb. I am proud to bring my children to events such as Festa Italiana or the Wild Game Dinner. They are the future of the IACS. I possess a Bachelor of

CLARICE S QUILLACE (Incumbent)

I have been a proud Member of the IACS for over 14 years and served on our Board for six years. My Membership dues are always current. This last term I have been on our Executive Committee. It is important for me to attend our functions. I look forward to the expansion of our building as one of the fruits of our success. That’s why being a part of our Regional Dinners, Craft Show, Festa della Repubblica, Bellini Opera, Festa Italiana, Healing Service, Anniversary Gala are all important to me. I have worked at these events; publicized our events; sold raffle tickets, etc. I currently reside in Shelby Township. I am single and a graduate of Oakland University with a BA in Education and an MSA from Central Michigan in Business. I hold a State of Michigan Teaching Certificate and am still using it. I work as a substitute teacher for EduStaff in the

Utica Community Schools. I spend a great deal of my time on being a Board Member of the IACS, COMITES, and Federazione Abruzzese del Michigan. I am a past Member of the Columbus Day Committee. I have organized many excursions under the sponsorship of the FADM. I attend Wayne State University where I take Italian Classes. Growing up hearing Italiano spoken in my home daily, I miss my parents and credit my memberships in Italian organizations with keeping me immersed in our beautiful culture. I am also a Member of the Calabria Club, AIO, Sons of Italy, Dante Alighieri Society, and the NOI Foundation. I respectfully ask all voting in this election to consider returning me to our Board of Directors. Clarice Squillace Second Vice-President

and the Italian community. It would be my honor and privilege to serve on the Board of the Italian American Cultural Society.

PINO MARELLI (Incumbent)

I have served on the IACS Board of Directors for over 10 years. Born in Bari,

Italy, the son of a classical musician, I’ve studied at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Music. Afterwards I’ve traveled throughout the world, most predominately in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. This background has allowed me to become an expert in the wide spectrum of international music and enabled me to learn several languages – my performances are vibrant with Italian, English and Spanish and even occasional splashes of French. I host an Italian American television show seen on Comcast Cable – Channel 90 on Wednesday – Saturday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. I have long been active in the Italian organization COMITES.

ROSA BONNI I was recently voted by the IACS Executive Board to my position on the Board of Directors. I would like to continue to be a team player of the IACS Board and help in making the IACS flourish and be one of the centerpieces of the Italian community now and into the future. As a member of the Board, I would love to be involved in the organizational process – volunteering, promoting any projects, events, and projects and serve whenever I can be of assistance. I am 46 years old – and the eldest of three children. I was born in Detroit and lived in the vicinity of the Italian American Cultural Center in Clinton Township-Macomb area until 1983. That year our family moved to Italy, and I lived in Italy until 1994. I went up to 6th grade in the States and then completed my education in Italy where I
