Class of 2025

INTRODUCTION

The Extended Essay is an independent research project undertaken by all IB Diploma candidates. It provides the opportunity for students to identify an academic area of interest, formulate a viable research question, conduct scholarly research and analyze their findings.

Students are supported by a faculty advisor but the work is done independently, outside of the classroom. The paper is drafted during junior year and then revised and submitted in the first semester of senior year.

The following is a snapshot of the research that the class of 2025 conducted during this process.

Topic: A analysis on CTE head trauma due to contact sports

Research Question: Are there long-term neurological consequences of repetitive concussions in contact sports, and has this affected the multi-billion dollar industry of contact sports?

WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE THAT YOU THINK IS IMPORTANT FOR THE UPCOMING STUDENTS TO KNOW ABOUT THE EXTENDED ESSAY?

One great piece of advice I would give to upcoming full IB students is to choose a topic you are generally interested in ! This will facilitate your writing process so much and will motivate you to keep investigating. You will also get experienceless writers block since everything will flow when you are in the right headspace.

IB HL Biology CLIMATECHANGE

TO WHAT EXTENT CAN AQUATIC PHOTOSYNTHETIC PLANTS COUNTERACT THE EFFECTS OF OCESN

ACIDIFICATION?

Abstract

My extended essay took on the topic of climate change, more specifically focused on ocean acidification and the opportunity to counteract its effects on the ocean and its organisms The reason I thought of this was because when looking at the topic of photosynthesis in my HL Bio class, we saw how plants uptook carbon dioxide to produce energy in the form of sugar and released oxygen as a byproduct This process reminded me of how acidity increases in the ocean because of its uptake of dissolved carbon dioxide So, could the addition of a greater magnitude of aquatic plants in the ocean be a natural and safe way to counteract the effects of ocean acidification on marine ecosystems? I proved this with extense research and an immersive experiment to support my thesis.

What did you learn from the extended essay process?

The extended essay might have been the most challenging task I put myself through academically, and I was fortunate enough to learn a lot from it. It was incredibly exhausiting and draining for me, because of its exigent process and need for dedicated additional time apart from school activities and classes I was the only one in my grade conducting an experiment, so my timeline looked different than my peers Navigating through this was challenging. Throughout this experience, I've learned a lot about ocean acidification, but most importantly I've learned the most about myself. I learned to communicate and be honest with myself of where I am at, no sugarcoating. The obstacles I faced with this essay taught me determination and discipline They made me value the importance of self reflection It taught me things I wouldn’t have been able to learn otherwise if it wasn’t for this immersive indulgent research paper that required a lot of self growth and discovery It genuinely helps you with other academic aspects in your life especially with research and writing skills. I don think I would have done it if I knew the emotional toll it would take on my life. But I would recommend it for the learning curve it takes you through and the confidence it creates in your writing. Trust yourself, the process, and time Your teachers and advisors are there to help you You have so much within yourself you have yet learn This assignment helps meet some of that

GENE THERAPY

Out of the genetic vectors used in hemophilia, which is most effective?

I explore the effectiveness of different genetic vectors in treating hemophilia, focusing on adeno-associated viral vectors (AAVs). They have shown significant clinical success due to their low immunogenicity, long-term gene expression, and tissue specificity. However, challenges remain, including immune response activation, genetic material carrying limitations, and liver toxicity. Overall, AAVs are positioned as the most promising vectors for hemophilia gene therapy. This was an area of interest to me because of prior interest in genetic diseases. It's also an insight to a possible medical field. For this type of paper, it was necessary to bring in prior knowledge as well as analysis of many journal studies.

I would advise to not get stressed out without reason about the final product. You are likely going to change your research question or your angle at least once. As long as you are on track with deadlines and implement your advisors' suggestion, you will be fine. Deadlines are a pain, but they are there to help you, not hurt you. Work with them, don’t fight them.

Opioid use and its adverse effects

How do ethical considerations influence pain management and opioid use in the U.S., especially in balancing pain relief and addiction risk?

Abstract:

The research paper titled "How do ethical considerations influence pain management and opioid use in the U S , especially in balancing pain relief and addiction risk?" explores the complex relationship between opioid prescriptions and ethical pain management practices in the U.S. healthcare system. The essay investigates opioids' physical and psychological effects, focusing on fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid. Ethical dilemmas arise as healthcare professionals must balance providing adequate pain relief while minimizing addiction and overdose risks. The paper further delves into the long-term effects of opioid use on the body, including its impact on the endocrine and immune systems, and addresses the societal stigmatization of addiction With opioid addiction posing a major public health crisis, the essay concludes by advocating for stricter regulations, better education for both healthcare providers and patients, and improved support systems for those struggling with addiction, in order to reduce opioid misuse and its devastating consequences.

What did you learn from the Extended Essay

process?

From the Extended Essay process, I learned valuable research skills, including how to critically evaluate sources and synthesize information effectively. It also taught me the importance of time management and staying organized when tackling a long-term project. Additionally, the process strengthened my ability to think critically and communicate my ideas clearly, helping me develop well-supported arguments on complex ethical issues surrounding opioid use. Overall, it was a rewarding experience that deepened my understanding of research and writing.

Inspiration

At first it was very difficult to get into the process of writing the EE, when brainstorming ideas and thinking about what I would write Formula 1 came to my mind I didn’t know specifically what to reasech about it but learning more about the sport I had fell in love with 2 years prior really caught my attention

Findings

In my methodology I said I will analyze primary and secondary sources to support my research question When finishing the process of writing the paper I found that regulation foster fair competition tto an extent since there are a lot of factors that are out of the control of the FIA.

I know sometimes it is hard but to star writing and find something you want to write about. However, the faster you get your idea the faster you can start writing but must importantly DONT PROCRASTINATE. At some point in the process I did it and I am sure my classmates did it too, it will not help you, do what you can to break though and keep working until you cross that finish line and subbmit your Extended Essay.

Extended Essay Abstract

EE Subject: Business Management

Topic: The integration of artificial intelligence in customer service of technology companies to gain competitive advantage and maximize economic outcomes

Research Question: The integration of artificial intelligence in customer service of technology companies to gain competitive advantage and maximize economic outcomes

The implementation of AI in the business realm and its positive and negative implications are among the topics most discussed. In my EE, I looked at case studies and news stories about tech companies and how they used AI to become one of the big five tech companies in the world From my research, I concluded that the strategic implementation of AI in customer service and human resources as exemplified by Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook, and IBM, has not only increased operational efficiency and customer satisfaction but also positioned these technology companies at a superior competitive advantage in the digital economy.

What’s one piece of advice that you think is important for the upcoming students to know about the Extended Essay?

One piece of advice I would give to students who will be doing the EE is to work on drafts in advance and look at the rubric while writing it in order to meet all of the requirements from the beginning This allowed me to review the essay several times on my own and make changes accordingly, based on the suggestions provided by my advisor.

GLOBAL POLITICS

MARIA LUCIA MARTINEZ

How does the interplay of social, economic, and political factors contribute to the escalation of human trafficking across Latin American communities?

Motivation: To be honest, when I saw the film Sound of Freedom in June 2023, I was deeply impacted by the opening scene, which revealed that the film's central case was based on an abduction that took place in Tegucigalpa, Honduras I quickly recognized the significance of this problem and decided to investigate more on thetopic

Methodology:Ilookedintospecificcaseexamples from Latin American countries, providing example likethewell-knownAngiePeñacase.

Results: Based on the economic, social, and political factors of Latin American countries, I discovered a correlation between the governments of their countries. Their governments are corrupt, the country has fewer resources to combat these kidnappings, andtheirlocationsarelesssecure.

What’s one piece of advice that you think is important for the upcoming students to know about the Extended Essay?

One piece of advice I would give to upcoming IB candidates is to choose a topic that genuinely interests you. Writing 4,000 words can feel tedious, and researching can become repetitive, but if you pick something you're truly curious about, the process becomes much easier and more enjoyable. Don’t feel pressured to focus only on what you plan to study later, focus on what excites you right now. Also, give yourself plenty of time. Write your roughdraftthoughtfully, notjusttomeetthewordcountorturninanassignment.Thisway, by the start of senior year, you'll be free from the stress of the Extended Essay and can focusonotherpriorities.

The The Six-Day Six-Day War War

History History

In what ways did the Six-Day War shape the political and socio-economic trajectory of Palestine from 1967 to 1992, with a focus on the ongoing IsraelPalestine conflict?

What motivated me to discuss Palestine with its history and the Six-Day War was my personal connection to the region. Both my parents come from Palestine and I feel connected to the land. The methodology used was primary and secondary sources, including U.N. resolutions and direct quotes from relevant people. My findings were that if it weren’t for the U.S.A., Israel would not exist to this day, as they are the reason why Israel won the Six-Day War.

One crucial piece of advice for upcoming students working on the Extended Essay is to choose a topic you are genuinely interested in. It involves extensive research and writing over a long period, so with a topic that you are passionate about, you're more likely to stay motivated, dig deeper into the research, and produce higher-quality work.

Ange SOURDIN EE

My motivation was a visit to Chile during Christmas that sparked an interest in its history, especially the 1973 coup. This research investigates the socio-economic factors leading to U.S. involvement in overthrowing President Salvador Allende, focusing on how his nationalization, land reform, and wealth redistribution policies conflicted with US interests. I did this using a methodology centered on historical journals, declassified CIA documents, and political speeches from Allende, I examined the connections between domestic policy and foreign intervention. My findings highlight that while Allende's reforms caused internal tensions, US economic and political interference was a key factor in the coup

Topic: Propaganda prior and the rise of Nazis. WWII.

Research Question:

"How did social, political, and economic factors contribute to the effectiveness of propaganda in fostering support for the Nazi regime?"

Abstract:

The essay explores the role of propaganda in fostering support for the Nazi regime, focusing on the social, political, and economic factors that contributed to its effectiveness It examines how the aftermath of World War I, the Treaty of Versailles, and the failures of the Weimar Republic created fertile ground for extremist ideologies It analyzes how Nazi propaganda manipulated nationalist sentiments, exploited economic hardships like the Great Depression, and utilized fear of communism and anti-Semitism to unify the population The essay also discusses the use of censorship, education, and media control in reinforcing Nazi ideology, emphasizing the dangerous power of propaganda when combined with socio-political manipulation The findings underscore the need for critical engagement with media to prevent the rise of authoritarian regimes.

Take deadlines seriously I am not one to usually check or read the EE Class Schoology assignments because there are so many other tasks that stress you out during your senior year

If you can, use your summer to work on the reflections and corrections to take one thing off your plate College work is HORRIBLE, especially if you’re applying during the early action season Do yourselves a favor and finish EVERYTHING during the summer so you never have to worry about your work during the November 1st deadline

TOPIC: AN ANALYSIS OF THE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES AROUND THE METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION OF THE PYRAMIDS ALONG WITH THEIR PURPOSE IN EGYPTIAN CULTURE.

Research Question: How were the Egyptian pyramids built so successfully despite such ancient technology and what was their purpose in relation to Egyptian religion, beliefs and mythological tales?

ABSTRACT:

Egypt in general is a topic I very much enjoy, specifically the pyramids, which is what led me to want to investigate the way they were constructed. My methodology consisted of primary and secondary sources that I found online as my main source of information, especially journal articles on the subject. I also used drawing and found paintings of the pyramids which helped me create my analysis but also my finding. Throughout my research I was presented with different possibe construction methods but concluded that the most probable was the theory of hauling the blocks due to Egyptian paintings in the pyramids depicting this method which added reliability to my finding

What’s one piece of advice that you think is important for the upcoming students to know about the Extended Essay?

Choose a topic you deeply enjoy. You will be writing about this for a very long time and if you don’t have a passion for it you will eventually get bored and not create an essay you’re proud of I also strongly advice that you find reliable and useful sources from the START Make corrections on it from the beginning so that you aren’t stressing about corrections as much when it’s time to turn it in. Keep up with the deadlines, they seem dreadful at first but you eventually learn you would’ve never finished without them.

HOW COVID-19 AFFECTED PERSONALITY IN YOUNG ADULTS

Psychology Essay

This essay explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on young adults' personalities, focusing on the Big Five Model: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. The pandemic's stressors, such as social isolation and uncertainty, significantly increased neuroticism and emotional instability, while extraversion and agreeableness declined. Resilience played a key role in buffering against these negative effects. Gender differences showed that women were more affected, experiencing greater increases in neuroticism. The essay also discusses methodological considerations and suggests that the pandemic's long-term impact on personality development requires further research to assess enduring psychological consequences.

WORLD RELIGIONS

Extended Essay

World Religions

EE Subject: World Religions.

Topic/Research Questions: What inconsistencies are present in Catholicism? And how do they impact it’s credibility as a belief-system?

Abstract

The purpose of my Extended Essay was to highlight inconsistencies within Catholicism specifically, and how they discredit its integrity in the context of a modern world. The primary motivation behind this essay was to depict the failings of Christianity in a respectful manner using arguments that can not be negated by a mention of faith. My methodology consisted of research journals, case studies, and passages taken directly from the old and new testament of the Bible itself. In the end, my findings were that there are substantial examples of inconsistencies within the Bible that go against the primary teachings of the Catholic Church and do compromise its viability.

What’s one piece of advice that you think is important for the upcoming students to know about the Extended Essay?

Your first rough draft is due at the end of Junior year, use the time you have wisely, and map out the arguments you want to make ahead of time in order to ensure that you are answering your research question thoroughly. That being said, pick a topic that genuinely interests you because you are going to have to conduct extensive research. But overall if you break it down into smaller sections its really not that bad, so don’t feel too overwhelmed.

THE 1966 AFL/NFL MERGER

Abstract: The research investigates the impact of the NFL and AFL merger on football in the United States. Motivated by the desire to understand how this event shaped the most popular sport in the country, the study examines the changes in league structure, media contracts, and key events like the Super Bowl. Through historical analysis, using both primary and secondary sources, it reveals that the merger significantly expanded the league, boosted the sport's visibility through TV deals, introduced the NFL Draft, and created the Super Bowl, solidifying football's dominant position in American sports culture.

ADVICE: It is important to learn how to properly link your research with your analysis. As well, creating an excellent outline before you start writing is crucial.
