WELCOME FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

2

Welcome to the American School of Kosova. We hope that you will take the time to get to know us a little more by exploring this brochure. If you were to visit us in person, we think you would be impressed and excited about our new campus as much as we are. For the first time in our history, all students in grades preschool through 12th grade are located on one campus in two beautiful state of the art buildings! Our new campus has plenty of natural light, creative spaces for learning, new science and art labs, modern furniture, a huge professional kitchen and comfortable cafeteria, two libraries, and an exciting outdoor play area. Also, if you were to visit us, you would see happy students engaged in a variety of learning activities; excited about their learning and comfortable with their peers and teachers. If you were to talk with one of our teachers or principals you would hear them tell stories about whole school projects, a lesson that they just created that engaged their students, their participation in a recent meaningful staff training or most likely share a personal story about an individual student who has made great growth. Faculty have described our community with the following adjectives: dynamic, caring, diverse, creative, inspirational, emerging, and trusting and are proud to be a part of ASK. As you look through our website and read about our curriculum, profile, enrichment programs and alumni stories of success, we hope that you too will be inspired to be a part of our mission and vision. With best regards, Shannon Bruce Ramaka Head of School

“Together educating the leaders of tomorrow for a better future.”

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM (Preschool - Grade 8)

11

The curriculum in grades 1-8 is based on the U.S. Common Core Standards for the subjects of English and math. In Social Studies we follow the AERO standards (American Education Reaches Out). In science we follow the U.S Next Generation Science Standards and in foreign languages we follow the European Common Framework (German and French) and MEST (Ministry of Education for Science and Technology) in Albanian language and history classes. Elementary students also participate in additional elective classes. These may include: integrated arts, physical education, French or German, Integrated Technology, drama or ďŹ ne arts. In middle school students are also offered clubtime experiences to encourage exploration of non- academic topics and change according to student inter est and teacher availability. This year we have offered a variety of clubs such as : chess, modern dance, badminton, movie, drawing, board games and karaoke.

12 In addition, we have designed our own advisory program based on the Leader in Me by Sean Covey, that guides students in their social and character development and builds the 7 skills of highly effective people: • Habit 1: Be Proactive (You’re in Charge) • Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind (Have a Plan) • Habit 3: Put First Things First (Work First, Then Play) • Habit 4: Think Win-Win (Everyone Can Win) • Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood (Listen Before You Talk) • Habit 6: Synergize (Together Is Better) • Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw (Balance Feels Best)

HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM (Grades 9 - 12)

13

The curriculum in high school is based on the American Carnegie unit system that requires every student to earn 1 credit for each class taken per year and a total of 28 credits earned by the end of 12th grade to earn a diploma that is recognized by the AdvancED accrediting agency and secondary institutions all over the world. Some universities in Europe require 3-5 AP courses on a transcript. The number of AP courses offered each year will depend on student enrollment and requests. Courses in grades 9-12 are designed and based on the Common Core Standards (English and Math), AERO( for Social Studies), and Next Generation Science Standards for (Science). In addition, the curriculum is aligned with MEST standards and all Kosovar students are obliged to take the Matura test at the end of their 12th grade year. The Matura is optional for all students.

14 High school students also participate in additional elective classes. These may include: photography/yearbook, German/French/Albanian, physical education, IT, fine art, business entrepreneurship, psychology, global perspectives and graphic arts. For a complete list of all high school courses, please see the curriculum handbook on the ASK website. In addition, we have designed our own advisory program based on the IB (International Baccalaureate) learner profile that fosters the dispositions of thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balance, and reflective. Students meet three times a week with their homeroom advisor who acts as the student’s personal coach and primary liaison between home and school communication. During the other two days a week, high school students participate in a variety of clubs according to the CAS program below:

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

15

Creativity Action Service (CAS) Program Cultivating creativity in the classroom is a critical component in encouraging students’ interest and motivation. Creativity Action Service (CAS) is a program designed for high school students, with the aim of stretching their potential and enabling them to learn and perform to the best of their abilities. This way, CAS increases students awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth. Teamwork is proven to stimulate the learning process, increase student motivation and attention (Suciu, 2014). Through CAS, students experience what it means to become intrinsically motivated in a learning activity or service in the community. For thirty minutes, two times a week, students will be exposed to a variety of ideas and activities they may ďŹ nd interesting. CAS Program teaches students that communication and teamwork are essential when facing tough tasks and challenges, but on the other hand it charges students with leadership roles, thus strengthening their conďŹ dence and independence.

16

What is CAS ? Creativity, Action, Service The pedagogical philosophy upon which CAS is built highlights the significant role of learning through direct experience of the world (Hayden et al, 2017). • Creativity includes various activities that involve creative thinking. It provides students with the opportunity to express freely and explore their imagination. • Action includes physical activities that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. It aims at promoting healthy habits related to physical well-being. • Service requires students to understand the importance of making a meaningful contribution to their community and society. Through Service, students develop personal and social skills in real-life situations involving decision-making, problem solving, initiative, responsibility, and accountability for their actions.

Model United Nations is an academic activity in which students can learn and debate about different topics while being part of international conferences with students all over the world.

Advanced Placement (AP) is a program offered in the United States and Canada created by the College Board which offers college-leve curricula and examinations to high school students. American colleges and universities may grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores on the examinations. The AP curriculum for each of the various subjects is created for the College Board by a panel of experts and college-level educators in that ďŹ eld of study. For a high school course to have the designation, the course must be audited by the College Board to ascertain that it satisďŹ es the AP curriculum. If the course is approved, the school may use the AP designation and the course will be publicly listed on the AP Course Ledger. Current AP courses offered at ASK: English Language, English Literature, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Comparative Government and Politics, and World History. 18

How AP classes support students going to colleges in Europe or America • If you are applying to a university in the U.S. taking an AP class demonstrates the level of learning that you made and the seriousness of your commitment. • Applications to U.S Universities-Last year in 2018, 5 of our 70 graduates submitted applications to universities in the United States. • Applications for universities in Europe-Last year in 2018, 15 of our 70 graduates submitted applications to universities in Europe and 12 students were accepted. According to the requirements of these universities, our students must demonstrate a score of a 3 or better on at least 5 AP exams. • Students will be surrounded and encouraged by peers who are seriously focused on their next step of college. • An approved U.S college freshmen level syllabus is offered for only the cost of the final exam and textbooks.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS K-12

19

LEARNING SUPPORT For students in preschool to grade 5 we strive to meet the needs of students with the additional support of a learning specialist and Student Support Team. When a student has greater needs, we may require the presence of a classroom assistant who will support the child individually and she/he will work with the classroom teacher and also the other students as they interact and learn together while supporting the student with exceptional needs. For students in grades 6-12 we meet regularly as a learning support team: homeroom teachers, a counselor, a learning support teacher, dean, and principal to identify and support students who need personalized assistance. The Learning Support team (SST) serves students with a variety of educational needs. The team is comprised of teachers, specialists, and principals and includes these roles: • Learning Support teacher for moderate learning challenges • Social, emotional or behavioral coaching with the counselor • English as a Second Language support provided by the ESL teacher Specific criteria for entrance and exit from the service areas are used and strictly adhered to. Student Success Team (SST) meets regularly to discuss students referred and to plan support interventions.

20

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL COUNSELING In order to meet the emotional needs of students we have developed an advisory program that focuses on building character, leadership skills, self-reection capacity, and friendship. In the Early Years, prek-grade 2 students work with their homeroom teacher on a daily basis to discuss and participate in lessons to build understanding of emotional health. In grades 3-5 teachers teach lesson daily. In grades 6-12 students meet with their homeroom teacher 3 days a week. The primary role of the homeroom teacher is to serve as the advocate and connector for each individual student with resources of support, and to personally guide each student in their personal and academic growth. In order to document this support, the homeroom teacher will record the dates of phone calls, special parent meetings, and emails in a designated google doc. The homeroom teacher will also complete a 7-week progress report which will be entered into PowerSchool four times a year. The second objective for the homeroom teacher is to design and facilitate lessons for the entire class that allow for character development. A guiding book of lessons has been developed to give you some ideas of lessons and the school counselor acts as the contact person and key adviser for the implementation of this program. For additional support, ASK employees one full time counselor for students k-12. The counselor offers individual support to students such as: resolving personal or interpersonal problems, goal setting and organization, making healthy friendships, talking through problems with peers, substance abuse, bullying, anger management, careers, depression, relationships, self-image, stress and suicide. The counselor may also facilitate small group sessions to teach listening and social skills, empathizing with others, and conict management.

ATHLETICS PROGRAM

21

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical education begins at a young age as children learn about their growing bodies and how they can move in marvelous ways. As children enter preschool at ASK they participate in movement activities in their core classroom and also regularly with a physical education specialist. Elementary students in grades kindergarten through 5th grade participate in formal physical education class every day for 30 minutes. In middle school students enjoy a 90 minute class, every other day. The focus of the physical education curriculum is to encourage the development of a variety of movement and skills, experience health of physical ďŹ tness, and explore the meaning of sportsmanship through exposure to team sports and games.

ATHLETICS Athletics at ASK is more than just practicing an individual sport. When a student participates in a team sport with their peers, they have the opportunity to represent the American School of Kosova and learn what it means to be a team member that others can count on and trust. Participating in athletics at ASK is a great way to develop leadership skills such as goal setting, working hard, and communication.

22

KAAPS (Kosovo Athletics Association of Private Schools) In the fall of 2018 ASK lead the development of the ďŹ rst athletic association for middle school and high school sports in Kosovo for students of private schools. ASK LIBRARY

26

We all know that reading is very important!

But did you know that preschoolers who are read to every day have many advantages and beneďŹ ts? Not only does reading enhance a child’s vocabulary, and to help them understand how to read and write, but reading aloud to children also helps them to understand different topics about the world and everyday life. The importance of reading cannot be emphasised enough in young children and we as parents and educators need to make reading a priority. The more we read to our children, the more knowledge they absorb, and knowledge is important in all aspects of life. There are many studies that show reading to babies and toddlers gives them a head start and helps to prepare them for school later. After all, reading with your children gives them the skills needed for when they start to read themselves, except of that it also create a special bond between you and your child. When a child can put himself into the story it helps them to develop empathy. They identify with characters, and they feel what they are feeling. Children begin to understand and relate to emotions as well which is a very positive thing. During the library time our students get to choose their books for reading with the assistance of our Librarians. After that we create a cozy atmosphere and choose a book together to read aloud.. The imagination and the book discussions that happen during that time are just priceless.

COLLEGE GUIDANCE

27

Students are encouraged to see the Guidance Counselor for assistance with personal, career development, or educational concerns. The Guidance Counselor is available for meetings each day and students may make an appointment directly. The College Guidance Counselor meets with students individually and/or in groups to help them manage their schedule as they prepare for different universities worldwide. Once a month the counselor leads a “College Info night that is designed for students and parents to learn about what is needed to prepare and apply for universities abroad and in Kosovo. College info session happen regularly and students have the chance to meet and talk to a different representatives. Students may also visit specially announced College and Alumni fairs that are organized by different institutions.Career tests are organized for all grade levels and results are shared with every student. The test is designed to assess their interests, values, and preferences towards their possible career. It will offer them an interesting look at themself, provide information about what motivates and interests them. Additional information is shared regularly with students via emails regarding their recommendation letters, application process and how to write personal essays.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

28

Monthly Parent Cafes allow an opportunity for parents to learn about what new is happening in the school and to understand the operations of the school and curriculum at a deeper level. The informal gatherings allow for open conversations between principals and parents so that communication is enhanced and a partnership is made possible. In addition, the meeting is designed to introduce and facilitate topics of interest particular to parenting. For example in the past, the Academic Leadership Team has hosted such meetings as:,“How to encourage our children to have a Growth Mindset”, “Reading aloud to your children” and “Do you know what your children are watching?”

How does powerschool help students academic growth? Parents who are actively involved in their child’s education can help keep students on track. Every student and parent can have instant access to real-time grades, attendance, comments, assignments and scores directly from the teacher’s gradebook, see teacher comments and grades; send and receive emails. Knowing your student’s grades and assignments is a great starting point to discuss progress, offer help, or give congratulations, which will strengthen the relationship with your student.
