Greetings and welcome to the spring edition of Soundings. I hope that the end of year holiday season was equal parts relaxing and fruitful for everyone and that 2023 has started out on a productive note.

I'd like to start by extending my gratitude to everyone who attended and helped make our Annual Meeting that was held in December in conjunction with the 2022 International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans a rousing success. The importance of opportunities like this cannot be overstated; bringing ASA members together and updating them on the status of the Association and to network and educate them on future issues that may arise in our industry is paramount. As always, I am extremely proud that the members of this organization genuinely support each other in our various ventures and milestones achieved. This camaraderie is one of the chief benefits of belonging to the ASA. As a result, we should all strive to employ a member when the situation allows; this solidarity not only acts a great benefit to current members but showcases the many opportunities our Association provides to any prospective future members.

One of the joys of spring is that the cold and harsh weather in some parts of the country will gradually, but with certainty, become more pleasant. Being outdoors will be something to finally look forward to doing. A small downside is that the beginning of hurricane season will be starting shortly. As we head into the spring season, I want to remind everyone to remain vigilant and prepared for any potential weather-related events that typically arise during these months. And with hurricane season officially arriving in less than two months, we must be ready to respond quickly and effectively to any storms that may impact our communities. Although the previous hurricane season wasn't punctuated by a great number of named storms, we are all aware that all it takes is one to cause untold damage and havoc to the affected community.

As this issue is published, our members continue their hard work in the areas affected by Hurricane Ian in southwest Florida. Responsible for over 150 deaths in Florida, Ian ranks as the deadliest hurricane in that state since the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and damage estimates dwarf that of 1992’s Hurricane Andrew. Repairing the damage both on land and offshore will be a multi-year effort and I am proud of the part that ASA members are doing to bring relief to the affected areas and their efforts in making the waterways in and around Florida safer.

I wish everyone continued health and prosperity as we advance further into the year. As always, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to the many volunteers who keep the American Salvage Association relevant and successful.

Saludos y bienvenidos a la edición de primavera de Soundings. Espero que las fiestas de fin de año hayan sido relajantes y fructíferas a partes iguales para todos y que 2023 haya empezado con buen pie.

Me gustaría empezar extendiendo mi gratitud a todos los que asistieron y ayudaron a que nuestra Reunión Anual que se celebró en diciembre junto con la International WorkBoat Show 2022 en Nueva Orleans fuera un éxito rotundo. Es muy importante que los miembros de ASA se reúnan y se pongan al día sobre el estado de la Asociación, así como para establecer contactos y educarlos sobre las cuestiones futuras que puedan surgir en nuestra industria. Como siempre, me enorgullece enormemente que los miembros de esta organización se apoyen mutuamente en nuestras diversas empresas e hitos alcanzados. Esta camaradería es uno de los principales beneficios de pertenecer a la ASA. En consecuencia, todos deberíamos esforzarnos por emplear a un miembro cuando la situación lo permita; esta solidaridad no solo supone un gran beneficio para los miembros actuales, sino que muestra las muchas oportunidades que ofrece nuestra Asociación a cualquier futuro miembro.

Una de las alegrías de la primavera es que el tiempo frío y riguroso de algunas partes del país se irá haciendo más agradable poco a poco, pero con seguridad. Por fin nos apetecerá estar al aire libre. Un pequeño inconveniente es que en breve comenzará la temporada de huracanes. A medida que nos adentramos en la temporada de primavera, quiero recordar a todo el mundo que permanezca alerta y preparado para cualquier posible fenómeno meteorológico que suele surgir durante estos meses. Y con la llegada oficial de la temporada de huracanes en menos de dos meses, debemos estar preparados para responder con rapidez y eficacia a cualquier tormenta que pueda afectar a nuestras comunidades. Si bien la anterior temporada de huracanes no estuvo marcada por un gran número de tormentas con nombre, todos somos conscientes de que basta una para causar daños y estragos incalculables en la comunidad afectada.

En el momento de publicar este número, nuestros miembros continúan su duro trabajo en las zonas afectadas por el huracán Ian en el suroeste de Florida. Responsable de más de 150 muertes en Florida, Ian es el huracán más mortífero en ese estado desde el huracán del Día del Trabajo de 1935 y las estimaciones de daños eclipsan las del huracán Andrew de 1992. La reparación de los daños, tanto en tierra como en alta mar, será un esfuerzo de varios años y es para mí un orgullo la labor que están realizando los miembros de ASA para socorrer a las zonas afectadas y sus esfuerzos por hacer más seguras las vías navegables de Florida y sus alrededores.

Les deseo a todos salud y prosperidad a medida que avanzamos en el año. Como siempre, me gustaría extender mi más profundo agradecimiento a los muchos voluntarios que mantienen a la American Salvage Association relevante y exitosa.
